When I was in high school I had six good buddies that played football, basketball, and baseball together through high school. Charlie Martin’s Mom used to let us get together in her basement and play five card stud. Professional poker players would grit their teeth today if they knew we played the game with two jokers and one-eyed jacks wild. This changes the game to a crazy affair and maize of confusion where the player with the least skill has a good chance of winning. We played what they called nickel poker. I only mention this because this is the closest thing I could think of to compare with what is going on in Lebanon.

Hariri has changed his mind and is now back in Lebanon once again trying to form a new Lebanese government. I do think he may finally be able to form a government under the 15-10-5 formula.

But the result of it with two jokers and two one-eyed jacks wild will be a crazy affair and a wild maize of confusion.

The 15-10-5 structure grants the majority 15 ministers, the opposition 10 and President Michel Sleiman gets five seats in Cabinet, guaranteeing him the deciding votes.

Both the majority and the opposition are respectively denied absolute majority or veto power.

Opposition parties – as well Democratic Gathering bloc leader MP Walid Jumblatt – expressed their commitment to the 15-10-5 formula following Hariri’s resignation.

Following a meeting with a delegation of Amal Movement MPs, Jumblatt said on Tuesday that forming a cabinet as soon as possible serves the interests of all political parties, particularly “the resistance,” a reference to Hizbullah.

THEY were eight ominous words for the majority of Lebanese voters. But while the international media focused on every ambiguous word uttered by Israeli and Palestinian officials about possible peace talks, a huge story drifted by – Lebanon ceased to have a government.

One of the most important and volatile countries in the Middle East lost its best chance for stability – newly elected Prime Minister Saad Hariri.

“I have abandoned trying to form a government,” were his ominous words.

Political violence is unavoidable in Lebanon. During the campaign for the June election, two leading politicians, Saad Hariri and Hezbollah chief Sheik Hassan Nasrallah, made few public appearances. Both are prime targets for assassinations.

After walking away from trying to form a government a week ago, Hariri fled to the safety of Saudi Arabia, where he had spent much of the campaign.

His father, Rafik, died from a massive car bomb as he drove along the waterfront of Beirut in 2005.

It has never been proved who did it, but Saad Hariri has no intention of letting them inflict a second tragedy on his family.

His rival Nasrallah refused to show his face in public, preferring to release video messages from one of his many bunkers under the streets of Beirut.

Hariri returned to Beirut on Thursday to announce he would try one more time to form a government.

It seems for the moment he has stared down Hezbollah by walking away and believes he may still have a chance.

The election in June went as peacefully as a Lebanese voter could hope. A significant majority chose Hariri’s coalition, aligned to pro-Western forces including the US and Saudi Arabia, over Hezbollah’s coalition aligned to Iran and Syria.

It was a courageous effort by the Lebanese. Hezbollah does not always observe niceties when dealing with its enemies.

But the election was merely round one. The real battle was always going to be Hariri confronting the powerful Nasrallah.

Unless he took on Nasrallah with the fresh mandate of an election victory – and won – Hariri would be unable to govern.

He not only had to challenge Nasrallah but wind back Hezbollah’s power.

Since May last year Hezbollah has in effect been running Lebanon as a result of a deal brokered in Doha, which gave Hezbollah a “blocking veto” over major parliamentary decisions.

In return for Hezbollah pulling its fighters off the streets of Beirut after several days of mayhem in May, and avoiding another civil war, Hezbollah was guaranteed that if it could muster one third of the votes in the parliament it could stop any legislation. Given that Hezbollah and its allies have well over one third, it entrenched Hezbollah as the real power.

Hariri was determined that if he were to hold the position of prime minister he would actually run the country. He decided that the last thing he should do is sit in the office as Nasrallah’s puppet.

So from the day he won the June election, Hariri set about taking on Hezbollah. Despite choreographed pictures of him with Nasrallah, he wanted to reduce Hezbollah’s presence in cabinet and bring Hezbollah’s substantial weapons supply from the mountains of southern Lebanon into the government’s control. Analysts in Lebanon agree that Hezbollah’s firepower far outweighs that of the Lebanese army – a situation Hariri knows is untenable long term.

Given the government of Lebanon and its people face the consequences from Israel of Hezbollah firing rockets into Israel, Hariri wanted to make sure he was in control.

The first issue he tackled was to wind back Hezbollah’s influence in cabinet.

But there were two more difficult problems over which Nasrallah’s self-named “camp of resistance” would not give ground easily – control over Beirut airport and control over its weapons.

Control of the airport means it can bring weapons into Lebanon, usually from Iran, while as a “resistance movement” weapons are its mainstay.

Hariri could not get past Hezbollah’s demands about what cabinet posts it had to begin on the other two issues.

As Hariri said when he walked away: “After a final round of negotiations, it became clear to me that some, with their impossible demands, are in no way going to allow the proposed cabinet lineup to pass.”

Hariri had no need to spell out who the “some” were.

The Middle East has many problems – among them the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the conflict between Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas, the growing rivalry between Saudi Arabia and Iran and hostilities between Egypt and Hezbollah. And that’s before the most dangerous of all – a possible war between Israel and Iran over Iran’s ambition to become a nuclear power.

The last thing the region needs right now is to have nobody governing Lebanon. After walking away, Saad Hariri has returned from Saudi Arabia to the jungle of Lebanese politics. If he cannot form a government this time, the people of Lebanon, who have suffered so much bloodshed, will need to brace themselves for more of the unknown.

Iran ready to confront ‘forces of darkness’ as Tel Aviv makes new war threats against Tehran.

TEHRAN – Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Tuesday that US-led foreign troops should leave the region and warned that Tehran would confront any attack on the republic.

“No power will ever dare to think of launching aggression against Iran. Today, Iran is experienced and powerful,” the hawk said in an address to

the nation

on the anniversary of the breakout of the Iran-Iraq war in 1980.

“Our armed forces are ready to confront the forces of darkness. If anybody wants to shoot a bullet at us from anywhere, we will cut off his hands.”

Ahmadinejad, who was to head later Tuesday

to New York to attend the UN General Assembly meeting, demanded that US-led foreign forces leave Iraq and Afghanistan.

“We advise you to go back to your own land. Our region will never accept a lengthy presence of foreigners,” the re-elected president, dressed in his trademark light-colour jacket and wearing sunglasses, said in a ceremony attended by top military and administrative officials.

“As you saw in Iraq and Afghanistan, people are against the presence of foreigners.

It is impossible (for foreign troops) to have a stable base in the region.”

Ahmadinejad’s speech was followed by a military parade, an annual event marking the breakout of the war between Iran and Iraq which lasted almost a decade.

The US had backed Iraq to attack Iran soon after the 1979 revolution in Iran.

Ahmadinejad said the war, which Iran describes as the “Sacred Defence”, was a “humiliation to Satanic forces.” Iranian officials refer to the United States as the Great Satan.

“Chemical weapons were used against our nation and the Satanic powers equipped Saddam (Hussein) against our nation. Saddam was backed by certain arrogant powers,” the president said, reminiscing about

the brutal conflict.

“We ask the arrogant powers to revise their polices… they sell weapons and then talk of peace.”

Ahmadinejad’s comments come just days ahead of a high-profile international meeting between Iran and representatives of the six world powers on Tehran’ s late

st package of proposals.

The package aims to allay concerns over Tehran’s nuclear programme which some powers cliam is aimed at making an atomic bomb, a charge vociferously denied by Iran.

“We have to reach a comprehensive confidence in order to examine the main questions and start negotiations,” foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki told a group of Iranian reporters in New York, the official IRNA news agency reported.

“We have to reach an agenda during these talks and in our package of proposals we have raised different issues… we have addressed the (global) nuclear issue, non-proliferation of arms and urged that all nuclear activities in the world must be supervised by the IAEA,” Mottaki said.

“I think… we can discuss within this framework and can reach mutual confidence concerning nuclear issues.”

He said Tehran was hoping that during the talks the concerned parties reach an agenda to “destroy all atomic weapons in the world”.

Israel says all options still open on Iran

Israel is keeping its options open to deal with the Iranian nuclear programme, a senior official said on Monday, after the Russian president said he had been assured it would not take military action.

Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon reiterated what Israeli leaders have said repeatedly — that Tel Aviv is keeping all options open.

“All options remain on the table,” Ayalon was quoted as saying by his spokesman. “It is certainly not a guarantee.”

Ayalon later told Israel’s army radio that Medvedev could have misunderstood what Peres said, or that his words may have been wrongly interpreted.

“Notwithstanding our respect for the Russian president, he is not in a position to speak in the name of Israel. There has been no change in our position.”

Iran insists it has the right to develop nuclear technology, which it says is aimed at generating energy for its growing population.

Israel is the only country in the Middle Ease that actually has nuclear weapons.

Observers say due the strong Jewish and pro-Israel lobbies in the US and some European countries, these countries have taken a hypocritical stance in relation to nuclear issues in the region.

Tehran had repeatedly protested against Israeli and US war threats, warning them that it would retaliate in the event of any strike against Iran.

This city called Ephraim is known as Taiba, and is the only West Bank village that is entirely inhabited by Catholics. It lies just east of the city of Ramallah, where Yassar Arafat was positioned for so long before his demise. In Arabic, according to the article which follows, Taiba means “nice and kind.”

I strongly suspect what you will read about in the Jerusalem Post article that follows, is a preview of what will happen to Catholic churches across the Islamic territories during the last few years in the tribulation period. At the time that John wrote the book of Revelation, the great city of Rome ruled the known world, and John identified it as the city representing the woman.

MUSLIMS RAMSACK CHRISTIAN VILLAGE

Efforts were under way on Sunday to calm the situation in this Christian village east of Ramallah after an attack by hundreds of Muslim men from nearby villages left many houses and vehicles torched.

The incident began on Saturday night and lasted until early Sunday, when Palestinian Authority security forces interfered to disperse the attackers.

Residents said several houses were looted and many families were forced to flee to Ramallah and other Christian villages, although no one was injured.

The attack on the village of 1,500 was triggered by the murder of a Muslim woman from the nearby village of Deir Jarir earlier this week. The 30-year-old woman, according to PA security sources, was apparently murdered by members of her family for having had a romance with a Christian man from Taiba.

“When her family discovered that she had been involved in a forbidden relationship with a Christian, they apparently forced her to drink poison,” said one source.

“Then they buried her without reporting her death to the relevant authorities.”

When the PA security forces decided to launch an investigation into the woman’s death, her family protested for fear that the relationship would be exposed. The family was fur ther infuriated by

the decision to exhume the body for autopsy.

The attack is one of the worst against Christians in the West Bank in many years.

Residents said it took the PA security forces several hours to reach Taiba. Others complained that the IDF, which is in charge of overall security in the area, did not answer their desperate calls for immediate help.

“More than 500 Muslim men, chanting Allahu akbar [God is great], attacked us at night,” said a Taiba resident. “They poured kerosene on many buildings and set them on fire. Many of the attackers broke into houses and stole furniture, jewelry and electrical appliances.”

With the exception of large numbers of PA policemen, the streets of Taiba were completely deserted on Sunday as the residents remained indoors. Many torched cars littered the streets. At least 16 houses had been gutted by fire and the assailants also destroyed a statue of the Virgin Mary.

“It was like a war, they arrived in groups, and many of them were holding clubs,” said another resident.

“Some people saw them carrying weapons. They first attacked houses belonging to the Khoury family [looking for the man who had the affair with the women, not realizing he had already fled the village.] Then they went to their relatives. They entered the houses and destroyed everything there.

Then they tried to enter the local beer factory, but were repelled by PA security agents. The fire engine arrived five hours later.”

Col. Tayseer Mansour, commander of the PA police in the Ramallah area, said his men arrived late because of the need to coordinate their movements with the IDF. “The delay resulted in the torching of a number of houses and cars in the village,” he said.

Taiba, the only West Bank village that is completely inhabited by Christians, is famous for its Taiba Beer factory, which was established by the Khoury family in 1994.

The residents are Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox or Greek Catholic. The village was originally called Ephraim, and is thought to be the city to which Jesus came with his disciples before his crucifixion: “Jesus therefore walked no more openly among the Jews; but went thence unto a country near the wilderness, into a city called Ephraim” (John 11:54).

According to some accounts, Salah a-Din, who led the war against the Crusaders, was responsible for the name change. He is said to have found the villagers there to be nice and kind – in Arabic, taybeen – and the name stuck, to become Taiba.

Pakistani Columnist Irfan Husain on the Burning Alive of Seven Christians in Gojra Town: ‘If Muslims in the West Were Treated as We Treat Non-Muslim Citizens of Pakistan, There Would be Loud Accusations of Islamophobia and Anti-Muslim Discrimination’

In a recent column, prominent Pakistani columnist Irfan Husain highlights the persecution of Christians, Hindus, and Ahmadi Muslims in Pakistan, especially the role of militant religious groups and police officials’ failure to prosecute the perpetrators of violence against religious minorities. The column was written following seven Christians being burned alive and dozens of Christian homes being destroyed by angry Muslim protesters over the alleged desecration of the Holy Koran in the town of Gojra in the Toba Tek Singh district of Pakistan’s Punjab province. [1]

Following are some excerpts from the column, as published originally in English by the leading Pakistani daily Dawn: [2]

“Had [The Authorities] Shown Such Alacrity In Forestalling The Incident, Many People Would Be Alive Today”

“Over the last few days, the Pakistani media has been full of reports about the mob violence that took seven innocent Christian lives in [the town of] Gojra. Given the revulsion all decent people have felt, the government has been forced to act: Provincial and federal ministers have visited the area; compensation of five lakhs [500,000] for each life lost has been announced; and the district police chief has been transferred.

“In short, we have gone through all the familiar motions. With practiced ease, the bureaucracy swung into action after the murders and arson were long over. Had they shown such alacrity in forestalling the incident, many people would be alive today.”

Fr. Mendes: “Seven Died… The Sad Part Is That The Police Were Warned – And Allowed This To Happen”

“While I have read several newspaper reports about the killings, the following email from Father Bonnie Mendes [a Christian leader based in Toba Tek Singh district] made particularly poignant reading. [He wrote]: ‘Dear Irfan, Somebody sent me your email [address]. Working as I was in villages, I hardly read newspapers… You must have heard of all that has happened in Gojra… At a Christian village in Korian Chak 362 JB, Gojra tehsil, district Toba Tek Singh (places I have worked for a long time), kids got hold of some social studies and Urdu textbooks and cut up pages to throw in welcome to the groom coming to the village. News spread that an Arabic text was also cut up. Talib Masih, the father of one of the boys, was called before the baraderi [community leaders]. He explained everything and how illiterate children had done it to welcome the party. He apologized. The matter ended there.

“‘Rumors still were spreading and some armed groups came and attacked the two chapels in the village, torched them, and burned the Christian homes. That was bad enough. Federal and provincial ministers came. Only one Muslim officer came to assess the damage. That was all. He too did not offer condolences for the loss. Instead, he asked others who came to leave for security risks. They answered: We will die with our people.

“‘Two or three days later, a mob came and attacked the Christians in

the town of Gojra. Seven died. They used whatever they had to defend themselves, including hunting rifles. They ran out of ammunition.

Houses were gutted.

“‘The police would not register the FIR [First Information Report necessary to launch a legal prosecution]. Funerals could not be held. People said to first register the FIR; the police wanted to dilute the case and then register the FIR, without the names of those identified by the Christians.

“‘The funerals could not be held. Pressure kept growing. The people took the coffins and kept them on the rail track. Rail tracks were blocked. People sat on the railway lines. In the end, the FIR was registered. The funeral was conducted by Bishop Joseph Coutts at 9:30 pm on Sunday [August 2, 2009].

“‘People wanted Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to come. He was busy giving awards to students.

They each received Rs 300,000 – the victims received only Rs 500,000 each. Life is cheap, it seems.

“The sad part is that the police were warned and allowed this to happen.

“‘Thank you for your continual support.

“‘Fr Bonnie Mendes’

“Reading these details, I could imagine the anguished screams of the people being burned alive and the helpless fury of families unable to help sons, brothers and fathers.”

“Since the Blasphemy Laws

… Our Country Has Become an Increasingly Dangerous Place for Non-Muslims”; “If Muslims in the West Were Treated as We Treat Non-Muslim Citizens of Pakistan – There Would Be Loud Accusations”

“I am often sent emails by readers claiming to be ‘proud Pakistanis.’ How can one be proud to be a Pakistani when incidents like the one at Gojra occur with such sickening regularity?

“Recently, several homes belonging to Christians were torched in [the town of] Kasur. I have little doubt that soon another tragedy involving one minority community or another will play itself out on the national stage. Politicians will wring their hands; some official will be made the scapegoat, and so on till the next tragedy.

“Ever since the blasphemy laws were imposed on Pakistan by General Zia-ul-Haq nearly three decades ago, our country has become an increasingly dangerous place for non-Muslims. Hundreds of cases have been registered against hapless Christians and Hindus. Ahmadis have not only been declared non-Muslims, they have been actively persecuted for their beliefs.”

“If Muslims in the West were treated as we treat non-Muslim citizens of Pakistan, there would be loud accusations of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim discrimination. And despite this widespread and rampant discrimination against our minorities, we have the gall to lecture the world about our peaceful values.

“One recurring theme in the media commentary about the Gojra tragedy is how Zia’s blasphemy laws have encouraged the persecution of the minorities. Anybody with a grudge to settle or some property [he wants] to grab can swear he saw a non-Muslim desecrate the Koran. Inflaming a mob of bigots is an easy matter for the local mullah [cleric], who is often in on the scam.”

“This Pattern Has Continued Unchecked Because Nobody is Ever Punished For These Crimes”

“What most commentators have not said is that this pattern has continued unchecked because nobody is ever punished for these crimes. I, for one, am unaware of any mullah or a member of a lynch mob who has been successfully prosecuted for his role in barbaric acts like the ones at Gojra. Often, as now, the police do register a case, but once the media spotlight has been turned elsewhere, life returns to its grim norm for the minorities.

The tripartite summit Tuesday between Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Barack Obama is not likely to bring about a breakthrough or so much as a line for the final-status agreement.

Both Israel and the PA have been emphasizing at every opportunity that the summit is not about negotiations, but merely a “preliminary meeting.”

The subdued tone stems from extra caution on the part of both the Israeli and the Palestinian leaders. Netanyahu faces coalition pressures and concern, and Abbas is losing support by even appearing for the summit without securing his important precondition – a settlement freeze in all of the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.

The summit serves, first and foremost, to provide the Obama administration with a much sought photo-op: Three leaders shaking hands, seemingly getting back to negotiations. This would come against the backdrop of the White House’s resounding failure to force Israel’s agreement to a complete settlement freeze or to persuade Arab states to make even tentative steps toward normalization with Israel, so a picture of the three leaders together will look like an extraordinary achievement. It might even help Obama and his administration to get the stalled peace process moving, however slowly.

This is precisely the reason why the PA realized that although Abbas set the precondition of a complete settlement freeze, as the United States demanded, he must now, according to that demand, rescind his condition without getting anything in return. The talks Abbas held in Cairo with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and in Jordan with King Abdullah II brought home to him just how desperately the Americans need this summit.

Still, it’s hard not to wonder about the manner in which the American administration (and even more so Abbas himself) conducted itself over the past few weeks.

Abbas stands to lose most from the summit. He stressed to the Palestinian public at every opportunity that there is little point to a tripartite summit before there’ s an agreement on a con

struction freeze, especially in East Jerusalem.

Senior PA officials (like top negotiator Yasser Abed Rabbo, who spoke to Haaretz last week) said that going to the summit without a freeze in East Jerusalem was crossing a red line, a surrender to Israel likely to provoke “a third intifada, this time against the PA.” Abed Rabbo went so far as to say there was no use in a “tea or coffee” meeting.

The hands of the American administration are not particularly clean.

The State Department envoys assured the Palestinians that Washing ton was on their side this time, and was not going

to yield to the Israelis. Only in the last few weeks did Abbas’ people in the Muqata find out the White House was, in fact, very understanding of the Israeli demand not to freeze construction in the settlements altogether, and to leave Jerusalem out of the debate.

Abbas was apparently prepared to forgo his dignity rather than replace Netanyahu as the bad boy in the peace process. He understands that no political bounty is likely to come out of t he meeting, and that

he himself is undertaking a considerable risk.

The Palestinian leader has but two things to comfort him – that the summit falls on the Muslim holiday Eid el Fitr, when the reaction in the Arab media is likely be minimal, and that the tea or the coffee at the summit will be good enough to come all the way to Washington.

The all-too-long history of the “peace process” has taught us that a summit can be a desirable goal, but also a place of unsurpassable danger.

When participants come with insufficient preparation, and without a safety net, the depth of the fall can be as high as the summit itself.

There is a great difference between a fruitless round of shuttle diplomacy between Jerusalem and Ramallah on the part of a presidential envoy and a failed summit called by U.S. President Barack Obama with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

In the 16 years since the Oslo Accords were signed at the White House, Israelis and Palestinians have witnessed countless summits, peace conferences, negotiations and understandings and even innumerable agreements. All ended in disappointment or, at worst, in yet another wave of violence.

It can be hoped that the Americans have learned, from the bitter experience of Camp David in 2000, that a tripartite summit is not just another media event, like a speech in Cairo or a New Year’s greeting. A meeting of the U.S. president with the leaders of

the parties is the Judgment Day weapon of the diplomatic world. The term peace process has already been placed in quotation marks and absorbed heavy doses of cynicism.

Who remembers what Obama said in Cairo this spring, or the declarations made in Annapolis in November 2007

? Both parties have since lost their remaining faith in a negotiated solution. If Tuesday’s summit, too, ends with nothing but a handshake for the cameras, what will they have to look forward to?

The New York summit can move things forward or bring them crashing down; staying in place is not an option.

Netanyahu and Abbas are not the only players on the field; every failure on the part of the pragmatic Palestinian camp is a victory for the extremist Palestinian camp. Abbas has bet his credibility on the Americans and their ability to influence their Israeli friends. If Obama sends him away empty-handed it will play into the hands of Abbas’ big rivals in Gaza and Damascus. Hamas will not miss such an opportunity to present the summit as yet more proof of its claim, since the Oslo Accords, that support for Fatah is flimsy.

How much longer will Abbas’ police officers put up with being painted as collaborators with the occupation?

Brzezinski: US should down IAF jets

Former national security adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski has urged US President Barack Obama to make it clear that if the IAF tries to launch an attack on Iran’ s nuclear facilitie

s via Iraqi

airspace, the US Air Force will shoot down the Israeli jets.

“We are not exactly impotent little babies,” Brzezinski told The Daily Beast in an interview published Sunday. “They have to fly over our airspace in Iraq. Are we just going to sit there and watch

? … We have to be serious about denying them that right.

That means a denial where you aren’t just saying it. If they fly over, you go up and confront them. They have the choice of turning back or not. No one wishes for this but it could be a ‘Liberty’ in reverse.”

The USS Liberty was a US Navy technical research ship accidentally struck by the IAF on the fourth day of the Six Day War, after being misidentified as an Egyptian warship.

Brzezinski, who was former president Jimmy Carter’s national security adviser, endorsed Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. However, he has no role in t

he current administration.

Meanwhile, in an interview with CNN aired on Sunday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said that President Shimon Peres had assured him that Israel was not planning a military strike on Iran.

“When he visited me in Sochi, Israeli President Peres said something important for us all: ‘Israel does not plan to launch any strikes on Iran, we are a peaceful country and we will not do this’,” Medvedev said.
