If anyone can lay claim to consummate mastery of the thriving art of history-forging, it’s the Jordanians. Their entire state, nationhood and very identity are counterfeit. Had the international community not been sympathetically predisposed to lap up the lie, Jordan obviously couldn’ t pull i

t off. Its wholesale fabrication hinges on a world that contentedly collaborates in hoodwinking itself.

So deceit blithely marches on.

Its latest installment is the artificially concocted kingdom’s decision to strip untold numbers of Palestinians of Jordanian citizenship. Those who were Jordanian for decades suddenly aren’t. It’s like the infamous Soviet encyclopedias’ loose-leaf pages, which were removed and replaced with the latest authoritative versions of what once was.

The past is ever-malleable in the service of current agendas.

According to Jordanian Interior Minister Nayef al-Kadi, the aim is to preempt the possibility of anyone resurrecting reminders that Jordan is part and parcel of what’s called Palestine.

It’s indeed the largest chunk thereof. That being the case, Palestinians – whether born east or west of the Jordan River – are Jordan’s natural citizens (regardless of whatever name it or they adopt). Kadi, under his monarch’s orders, is now out to underscore the falsehood that “Jordan is not Palestine just as Palestine is not Jordan.”

Thereby no future peace deal could rubber-stamp Jordanian domicile for so-called Palestinians. Instead they’d be driven to overrun Israel and turn it into the third Arab state in the original jurisdiction of the post-World War I British Mandate over Palestine.

Otherwise Jordan would forfeit all proceeds from the gargantuan deception it labored so hard to market to a world eager to be deceived – i.e., the synthetic Jordanian and Palestinian ethnicities, along with the notion that these recent-vintage nationalities are dissimilar from each other and deserve self-determination in separate homelands: Jordan and Palestine.

This cock-and-bull contention begat the image of the stateless Palestinians – aggrieved indigenous inhabitants striving desperately to throw off the yoke of foreign (Jewish) occupation.

Until 1948 Palestine was synonymous with the Hebrew Eretz Yisrael. The “Palestinian” epithet was largely reserved for Jews and used by them. Local Arabs preferred allegiance to Greater Syria or Iraq.

Golda Meir used to quip: “I am a Palestinian, but don’t like the name. Palestine is a name the Romans gave Eretz Yisrael with the express purpose of infuriating defeated Jews… Why should we use a spiteful name meant to humiliate us?… Christendom inherited the name from Rome and the British chose to call the land they mandated Palestine.

Local Arabs picked it up as their nation’s supposed ancient name, though they couldn’t even pronounce it correctly, and turned it into Filastin, a fictional entity.”

Palestine/Filastin never had an independent existence, cultural uniqueness, linguistic distinctiveness or religious idiosyncrasy to differentiate it from the surrounding Arab milieu.

Moreover, the British Mandate in Palestine extended over both banks of the Jordan. In 1921, 78 percent of what the League of Nations designated as “the national home of the Jewish people” was ripped off and presented as a gift to Abdullah, son of Sharif Hussein ibn Ali, Mecca’s Hashemite emir (also self-proclaimed caliph of all Muslims). Hussein later (1924) lost control of Islam’s holiest city and surrounding Hejaz to a rival clan, the Saudis. Had he won, we’d be speaking today of Hashemite Arabia.

As is, we’re saddled with Hashemite Jordan.

Out to recompense their Hashemite lackeys, the Brits enthroned Abdullah’s younger brother Faisal as king of Greater Syria. After the French expelled Faisal, London manufactured for him a make-believe realm called Iraq. His grandson Faisal II was deposed, executed and his corpse dragged through Baghdad’s streets in 1958, but England’s unnatural Iraqi fusion remains and continues to disturb the world.

Abdullah sought the title of emir of Palestine.

Britain made him settle for Transjordan. No Transjordanian nation appears in human chronicles.

It was conceived on Palestinian soil by Perfidious Albion. That was the first division of Palestine.

In 1950, Transjordan annexed the “West Bank” (the name they gave the territory occupied after the Arab invasion of new-born Israel in 1948) and became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Its leaders, including the late King Hussein, stressed over and over in numerous pronouncements that “Jordan and Palestine are one and the same.” So did Palestinian leaders, including Yasser Arafat. The Palestinian Covenant, in fact, covets all of Jordan – precisely because it’s Palestine.

Yet eventually it became expedient, PR-wise, to claim that Palestine exists exclusively west of the mini-river, justifying the campaign for a second Palestinian Arab state.

Fearing that his Palestinian subjects would topple their imported Hashemite rulers, Hussein kicked out the PLO in Black September 1970. Too bad. Had he failed, Arafat would have taken Amman over and nobody could today deny that Palestine is divided among Jews and Arabs, with the Arabs owning nearly four-fifths thereof.

Now Hussein’s son Abdullah II seeks to rewrite history once more in the well-trodden Jordanian tradition. His father dropped the claim to what he branded the West Bank but didn’t revive the ludicrous moniker of Transjordan. After 17 years of annexation (1950-67), the Jordan trademark gained global acceptance.

It rang authentic. Why then return to the obvious fake?

Jordan’s population, though, is overwhelmingly Palestinian.

The only exceptions are the Beduin who accompanied Abdullah I from Hejaz. Like the Hashemites, they’re foreigners. Now these outsiders design to delegitimize the natives. Expectedly, governments and human rights NGOs worldwide are silent.

Jordan was born of fraud, which it’s fated thereafter to prop up via unremitting retroactive repairs to the past – even the distant past. Not too many years back Jordan TV aired a documentary on Jerusalem portraying ancient Jebusites as Arabs.

Of course, were the Hebrews not the People of the Book, those Jerusalem-area Canaanites known as Jebusites would have never made their exceedingly fleeting appearance on the pages of history, or on JTV.

For anyone who forgot the brief biblical references, the Jebusites were the folks from whom King David conquered a wee hamlet he later turned into his capital. The books of Judges and Ezra indicate they intermarried and assimilated among the Israelites.

Posthumously Arabizing these Jebusites presumably establishes an Arab claim to Zion. JTV concomitantly magnified the Jebusites’ contribution to mankind to proportions that would have doubtlessly astounded them. JTV outrightly expunged Jews from Jerusalem’s annals, save for one abrupt but indispensable appearance in the Judenrein city. Villainous Jews arrived suddenly out of nowhere and stayed just long enough to crucify Jesus, described as “a Palestinian Arab prophet.”

JTV even treated us to recipes from the Jebusite kitchen. These would have altogether floored the long-lost Jebusites, as it appears that their favorite ingredients were tomatoes and chili peppers, which, alas, only reached the Old World 2,500 years later, when Spaniards brought them back from America.

Perhaps, however, the enterprising Jebusites beat Columbus there, thus establishing an Arab claim to the Western Hemisphere. Any claim that Jordan isn’t Palestine is just as unimpeachable.

U.S. no longer at war with ‘terrorism’

It’s official. The United States is no longer engaged in a “war on terrorism.” Neither is it fighting “jihadists” nor locked in a “global war.”

President Obama’s top homeland security and counterterrorism official on Thursday declared as unacceptable the terms crafted by the George W.

Bush administration.

It is now solely a “war with al Qaeda” and its violent extremist allies, said John Brennan, head of the White House homeland security office, during a speech Thursday at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank.

The semantic shift is intended to bring precision to the way the president and his aides talk about the nation’s efforts to defeat al Qaeda, though Bush administration officials say the policies that are being put to use have not changed dramatically.
To say the United States is fighting “jihadists” is wrongheaded, Mr.

Brennan said, because it is using “a legitimate term, ‘jihad,’ meaning to purify oneself or to wage a holy struggle for a moral goal,” which “risks giving these murderers the religious legitimacy they desperately seek but in no way deserve.”

“Worse, it risks reinforcing the idea that the United States is somehow at war with Islam itself,” Mr. Brennan said.

As for the “war on terrorism,” Mr. Brennan said, the administration will not use the phrase “because terrorism is but a tactic – a means to an end, which in al Qaeda’s case is global domination by an Islamic caliphate.”

He also dismissed “global war” as a term that feeds al Qaeda’s vision of itself as a “a highly organized, global entity capable of replacing sovereign nations with a global caliphate.”

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said in March that the administration was not using the term “war on terror” but no specific directive had come from the White House itself. Mr. Obama used the term “war on terror” Jan. 23, his fourth day as president, but he has not used it since.

Juan Zarate, a former deputy national security adviser for counterterrorism to Mr. Bush, was in the audience and dismissed Mr. Brennan’s speech as cosmetic.

“It’s a straw man. The question is: How do you deal with the policy?” said Mr. Zarate, who disagreed with Mr. Brennan’s suggestion that the Obama administration is not continuing Bush-era policies.

Critics on the left and the right have pointed out that the Obama administration has continued such Bush-era policies as extraordinary rendition and drone attacks in Pakistan. There remains an international and domestic surveillance program that is cloaked in mystery, and the war in Afghanistan, where Mr. Obama has increased the number of U.S. troops and the military continues to house enemy combatants at Bagram Air Base.

In addition, the White House is still considering the indefinite detention of terrorist suspects.

“A challenge for John and the administration is to preserve the perception of a new approach while still continuing with counterterrorism strategies that have proven effective,” Mr. Zarate said.

Mr. Brennan’s speech was aimed at outlining ways in which the Obama administration intends to undermine the “upstream” factors that create an environment in which terrorists are created.

The president’s adviser talked about increasing aid to foreign governments for building up their militaries and social and democratic institutions, but provided few details about how the White House will do that.

Bush’s ambassador to the Muslim world as undersecretary of state for public diplomacy, said the focus on “upstream” factors was “a good strategy because it’s the same strategy that we had.”

Water in Israel is much more valuable than oil or gold. Water is in very short supply in all of Israel, and an every increasing demand ranks it at the top of national interest. It is more than worth going to war over, because without it Israel would cease to exist. It is a constant problem for Israel with Lebanon and Syria. The five upper headwater tributaries of the Jordan have their sources in the snows of the upper Golan Heights and in the Syrian and Lebanese ranges just across the northern border of Israel. Tampering with these water sources, at some point in time after Israel has been lulled into a false peace mode, could be used as a clever ploy to get Israel to push north into Syria and Lebanon, thinking they could take care of the problem. But upon so doing they might find several divisions of Syrian, Iraqi, and Lebanese troops poised and ready to counterattack, then to drive south into Israel.

I have spent time on the top of Mt. Herman and explored all five of the upper Jordan spring-fed tributaries.

Israeli officials have been closely observing water being pumped from the Wazzani River, which is a tributary of the Hatzbani River.

The Hatzbani flows into the the Sea of Galilee, which empties into the Jordan. The last time I was in Israel, just before the intifada, the Lebanese had already begun to pump water by a pipeline extending into the Wazzani. Shortly after I returned to the United States they installed a much larger pipe, and now they are installing one almost a foot and a half in diameter. One that large can pump a lot of water. Lebanon claims it is only pumping about five million cubic meters a year, and that it is entitled to fifty million cubic meters according to international water treaties. Israel claims that when the current project is completed by Lebanon, then some twenty-five percent of the Wazzani’s flow will be drained off by its northern neighbor each year.

After a form of “forced peace” has lulled Israel into a false sense of security, within a short period of time after this state of “a false peace” is in place, I am convinced that the Islamic nations will want Israel to appear to be the aggressor when they launch a surprise Jihah against it. The bait used may be a move to threaten Israel’s water supply, or a launching of rockets across the border by Hizbollah. Israel has repeatedly warned both Syria and Lebanon that either of these could lead to a cross-border strike by IDF forces to cleanup the problem.

PM Warns Lebanon Over Wazzani Waters

Israel will not accept Lebanese plans to draw additional water from the Wazzani River, which ultimately flows into Lake Kinneret, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon warned Tuesday.

Israel Radio said the government had relayed its concern to Lebanon along with calls to stop the project.

According to reports in the Lebanese press, work on laying 16-inch diameter pipes to be used to convey water from the Wazzani, a tributary of the Hatzbani, to towns and villages in south Lebanon has been completed.

The next stage of the project is slated to involve the construction of an enlarged pumping station and a reservoir from where the water will be channelled into the pipeline.

The entire project, being carried out by the Council of the South which is affiliated with Amal and its leader, Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Beri, is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

So far the Lebanese government has rejected Israel’s warnings and international pressure to stop the project which Sharon was quoted as saying was in breach of previous water treaties, including unwritten accords.

There are no accurate assessments of how much the Lebanese pumping project would drain from the Hatzbani and ultimately the Kinneret, although some estimates have put the amount as high as 50 million cubic meters a year.

This is the equivalent of the quantity Israel intends to import from Turkey each year, as well as the total annual production capacity of a major seawater desalination unit.

Syria is experiencing an economic holocaust.

There is no other way to describe what the Syrian regime is so much trying to hide. The country is drying up, and no less than 250,000 farmers were forced in the past three years to abandon their land and migrate to the large cities. They live in tents there, completely neglected by the regime. These figures appeared in a special study undertaken by the United Nations and published on the al-Arabiya website.

The immense Euphrates River, Syria’s main source of water, is drying up. The Turks are stopping its water in their territory,

so that Syria and Iraq

are receiving a declining portion of the water. Within about 10 years, the river is expected to dry up completely outside Turkish territory. Today already, it reaches Syria w

ith contaminated water and therefore its fish, an important source of livelihood, is ecoming extinct.

As result of the drought that had been plaguing Syria for several years now, another important Syrian water source, the Aasi (Orontes) River, is drying up as well. Its water is becoming saltier and increasingly contaminated, and its fish are dying off. And without fish, there is no livelihood. Entire villages fed by its waters for hundreds of years are simply being deserted.

Ground water in the country had reached such nadir that it is no longer possible to use the roughly 420,000 illegal wells dug by residents over the years.

If there is no water, there is no agriculture; people proceed to leave the village and move to the city. As there is no work there either, the distress is terrible and political pressures builds up.

Many of the farmers leaving their villages are Kurd, which makes the problem an ethnic one. The Kurdish refugees accuse the regime of doing nothing for them.

For several years now they have been living in thousands of tents near the big cities without being addressed.

Should Israel pay for Syrian failures?

It turns out that the ruling Baath party is at fault for everything.

Ahead of the possible resumption of negotiations with Syria, we should know these figures and be cautious. We should hope that the Americans, who wish to advance talks on the Syrian track, will also be aware of this information.

Loimos Concern is Growing Worldwide

When I began doing the lecture series “A Geological Exposition of the Second Coming of Christ” in 1978, I had no idea that it was going to be presented in all the places covered on our Home Web Page. For those of you who have attended the lecture series, I am sure you will remember that from 1981 onwards I made the following statement hundreds of times during the lecture series: “I do not believe they will ever find a vaccination or cure for HIV because it is a prophetic pestilence, and if I am wrong, when they finally do discover one or the other, or both, it will be already be too late!”

Well, it is already too late, and they are no closer to finding one now than when they first begin to search for a cure. It has met the requirements for the New Testament word’s “odin” and “loimos.”

The two excerpts from The Khaleej Times and The Australian news sources via the World News, which follows our heading are part of the worldwide concern for the spread of “loimos.”

When Dardanelle MBC first initiated our Web Site we began to issue Prophetic Updates on Loimos. One of the first was Archive Prophecy Update Number 19, which we issued in 2000.

Matthew 24:7,8 – For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. [8] All these are the beginning of sorrows.

The word “sorrows” is “odin,” which means the type of pain pattern associated with a woman’s birth pains. “Pestilence” is “loimos,” which means “any deadly infectious disorder.”

But what about Matthew’s “pestilence” – Is it following the pattern of a woman’s birth travail for the first time since Jesus prophesied it would? Absolutely! The basic root meaning of the word “loimos,” translated “pestilence,” is simply “any deadly infectious disorder.” Many plagues have passed through mankind since the fall, but none

have generated a massive epidemic that was continuously accelerating over a long period of time. These “loimos” have never been able to follow the pattern of a woman’s birth pains for very long on a worldwide basis. Cholera, small pox, typhoid, bubonic plague, and so on, have appeared in short spurts like false labor, but none has ever maintained a persistent,

ever increasing, epidemic characteristic with seemingly no end. But now, for the first time, we have a “loimos,” a deadly infectious disorder, that has portrayed these characteristics from its inception. The HIV virus is the first to perfectly match the pattern of a woman’s birth pangs

, and it will continue to do so until the travail of the woman Israel ends, and the Son she rejected arrives.

HIV is a virus that has swept across the globe like wildfire. HIV cases worldwide increased from a trace in 1980 to more than 5 million in 1985, to more than 10 million in 1990, to more than 20 million in 1995, and to a whopping 30 million in 2000.

AIDS, the dreadful blossom of HIV, was first reported in a British sailor, who died in England in 1959. HIV has hardest hit Africa up to this point, but it is poised to spread into Asia and the former Soviet Union as an ever-increasing storm. And, in truth, medical researchers seem no closer to fining a cure than they were twenty years ago.

Are there other “loimos” infections that have also started to demonstrate the patterns of a woman’s birth pangs? Yes! The World Health Organization (WHO) fears that tuberculosis may kill 30 million worldwide during the next decade. The emergence of drug-resistant strains, and the spread of HIV have both hampered efforts by health agencies

to slow the renewed spread of the consumptive illness. Another sort of “loimos” is malaria, which is on the rise around the world, and once curative treatments are losing their effect. It is a pestilence of global dimensions, and new strains are evolving that scientists fear will be untreatable.

But what about all the microbes generating all this pestilence, this “loimos,” these deadly infectious disorders, what are they doing, how are they behaving? Are they doing something that will make the pestilences continue to act like a woman’s birth pangs through the tribulation period? Yes! A leading national magazine cover, back in the last century, carried the bold print title: “REVENGE OF THE KILLER MICROBES – ARE WE LOSING THE WAR AGAINST INFECTIO US

DISEASES?” Tuft’s Levy answered the question in Newsweek Magazine by stating: “The rise of drug-resistant germs is unparalleled in recorded biologic history.” Because of this contributing factor, pestilence will become more and more widespread in its acceleration until the second advent of Christ.

The Greek word “loimos,” which is found in the N.T. Olivet Discourse of Jesus, is supposed to become most evident shortly before the start of the Tribulation Period. According to Bullinger’s Critical Lexicon of the New Testament it is: “Any deadly infectious disorder.” Would the (A) H1N1 (swine flu) we first saw in Mexico fit this definition – Absolutely! But is it going to become a “deadly infectious disorder for humans? I have no way of knowing, nor does anyone else, but the world is anxiously waiting to see if (A) H1N1 is going to be able to mutate itself into a virus upon which vaccination has no effect. If this ever happens, the population of this planet is in big trouble. It would then fall into the category of “odin,” and possibly continue into the Tribulation Period with the other deadly infectious disorders.

Global goal for swine flu vaccine quest

THE surprisingly rapid global transmission of the so-called swine flu has captured the attention of the Rudd government and his counterparts in North America and Europe, sparking a worldwide race to develop an effective vaccine. Two Australian biotechnology companies, Adelaide-based Vaxine and Melbourne-based CSL Biotherapies, initiated the first vaccine trials in late July, followed by Europe and the US.

Finding a technological solution to swine flu _ technically, Influenza (A) H1N1 (swine flu) _ will be a key scientific advance, but vital questions of scarcity, fairness and safety loom large.

The swine flu vaccine will almost certainly be scarce, with manufacturers unable to meet the huge global demand.

The industry is struggling to produce good vaccine yields with the H1N1 seed virus. At the same time, the vaccine may not be fully effective against the present strain of the virus or, worse, the virus may mutate, rendering the vaccine ineffective. The vaccine, moreover, will probably require two doses, further reducing supplies.

The World Health Organisation recommends the use of adjuvants, a substance added to a vaccine to improve the immune response so that less vaccine is needed.

Yet the US may not follow WHO guidelines, thereby depleting an already short vaccine supply.

The US Food and Drug Administration has never approved a human vaccine containing adjuvants, and clinical trials in the US do not include adjuvants.

Governments face hard choices on how to ethically ration a scarce lifesaving resource such as a flu vaccine, particularly if the virus becomes more lethal: Who shall live when not all can live? In Australia and most developed countries, children and the elderly have had priority for seasonal influenza vaccines.

Children and their careers should certainly be a high priority for swine flu vaccine because they rapidly spread the infection in day care and school. Yet privileging the elderly would be a mistake because they have contracted the new strain at the lowest rate and appear to have some immunity because of exposure to distantly related flu strains that circulated decades ago, and still the elderly can receive proper care with services as the Home Care Assistance 9050 W Olympic Blvd, Beverly Hills, CA 90211 (310) 857-4736.

Instead, government should assign top priority to the most vulnerable who have died at a disproportionate rate from swine flu: those who have poor health such as heart disease, asthma or diabetes. This is also the fairest way to allocate scarce vaccines because people with multiple health conditions also tend to be the most disadvantaged in society, such as the Aboriginal community and other minorities.

Healthcare and emergency workers also deserve priority because they provide essential services in the face of an epidemic.

It is vital that government makes allocation decisions fairly and transparently.

The public has a right to know which groups will have priority access and why.

One key problem, however, is that the private market is still likely to privilege the rich and politically connected in gaining access.

Business culture is geared towards satisfying consumer demand, so the industry will charge what the market will bear for a scarce, valuable vaccine.

Rich countries will face scarcity, but they will have much more ample supplies than poor countries. The pressure on governments to protect their citizens will be intense during a pandemic. The vaccine industry is likely to supply markets that can afford to pay and in countries where they are located. More than 90 per cent of the world’s capacity to manufacture influenza vaccines is concentrated in Europe and North America.

Australia will also be well off because of its economic resources, small population and the fact key vaccine producers are based here. As the rich stockpile vaccines, poor countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America are left much more vulnerable.

Australia, Europe and the US are spending a fortune on vaccines and antiviral medication for influenza, but virtually none of these resources will benefit poor countries. Serious questions of global social justice arise when wealth, rather than need, becomes the primary allocation criterion. The mal-distribution of vaccines in the face of a global financial crisis will only widen the already yawning health gaps between the rich and the poor. Rich countries hoarding vaccines is also is a bad public health strategy because it allows the virus to circulate unchecked in highly populated developing countries.

Safety, of course, is just as important as equitable access. There is intense political and market pressure to move quickly on vaccine development. Many national regulatory agencies have set up fast-track approval processes, and the vaccine industry is pushing hard to finish clinical trials and gain government approval. The politics of swine flu is pushing toward mass public vaccinations in September and October, the beginning of the flu season in the northern hemisphere.

Dose-sparing strategies to avoid depletion of an already short vaccine supply will increase risks. Studies show that vaccines containing adjuvants cause more adverse effects.

More worrying, because the clinical trials are so small, is that adverse effects will not be detected until the vaccine has already been used on a large population. It’s essential to conduct rigorous post-marketing surveillance to pick up rare, but serious, effects.

Hefty public and private spending on influenza treatments will result in a windfall for the pharmaceutical industry, with Roche reporting that sales of Tamiflu (an antiviral medication that ameliorates flu symptoms) have tripled. GlaxoSmithKline is predicting huge profits from a vaccine. At the same time, the industry is seeking liability protection in the event that the vaccine causes unintended harm to health. Patients groups, too, will want to be sure to be compensated for any ill-effects from vaccinations.

Reminiscent of the present situation, the media fanned emotions about a catastrophic swine flu epidemic in 1976 that never emerged. Pharmaceutical companies lobbied governments hard _ and successfully _ for resources and liability protection.

In the US, Gerald Ford advocated a mass immunisation campaign. Unfortunately, the vaccine caused several cases of a serious paralysis called Guillain-Barre syndrome, which was politically disastrous for the president. The 1976 swine flu affair is instructive and suggests caution in rushing to vaccinate the public without proper clinical trials.

The Rudd government needs to assess carefully the risks and benefits of rapid approval and roll-out of a vaccine. Thus far swine flu has been mild, with most patients making a full recovery. The fear, of course, is that H1N1 will mutate, becoming much more lethal. This was what happened with the second wave of the 1918 Spanish flu, which killed more than 50 million people in a much less populated world. It is a remote possibility, but one that demands watchfulness.

The most prudent course today would be to conduct careful clinical trials with due scientific deliberation; use the vaccine on high-risk groups, phasing in the full population only as evidence of safety and effectiveness becomes clearer; and conducting post-market surveillance for adverse effects.
And even if it’s not politically expedient, justice requires that scarce and safe vaccines go to the most disadvantaged in Australia and worldwide. Equitable access to a vaccine against swine influenza is not merely a moral imperative. It is also critically necessary for the success of any pandemic strategy to safeguard global health.

Concern grows for Tamiflu-resistant swine flu

Health officials raised the alarm about a strain of swine flu that is resistant to the Tamiflu treatment as the virus claimed more lives on Tuesday.

Vietnam reported its first fatal case.

India and South Africa both reported their first deadly cases of the A(H1N1) virus late Monday.

Maria Teresa Cerqueira, head of the Pan-American Health Organization office in La Jolla, California, said a Tamiflu-resistant mutation of A (H1N1) had been found around the US-Mexico border in El Paso and close to McAllen, Texas.

Experts had gathered in La Jolla, California, on Monday to discuss responses to the outbreak, and warned that resistant strains were likely emerging because of overuse of antivirals like Tamiflu.

“In the United States Tamiflu is sold with a prescription, but in Mexico and Canada it is sold freely and taken at the first sneeze. Then, when it is really needed, it doesn’t work,” said Cerqueira late Monday.

Cases of A (H1N1) that were resistant to the anti-viral medicine have now been found in the United States, Canada, Denmark, Hong Kong and Japan.

In Vietnam, officials reported the country’s first swine flu fatality after a 29-year-old woman died from the disease in the southern coastal province of Khanh Hoa.

Nearly 1,000 people have been reported infected in Vietnam and about 500 of those are receiving hospital treatment, according to the health ministry.

In South Africa, authorities said a 22-year-old student at Stellenbosch University near Cape Town had died after contracting the virus, while in India a 14-year-old girl in the western city of Pune died.

With the world’s highest number of HIV/AIDS-affected people — nearly 19 percent of a 49-million-person population — South Africa is considered particularly at risk because people with compromised immunity are more likely to fall prey to the disease.

South Africa’s swine flu caseload has increased fourfold since the country’s first case was reported on June 14.

In India, the government said that 2,479 people had been tested for swine flu so far out of whom 558 had tested positive for H1N1.

Some health officials in India have suggested a combination of climatic and meteorological factors — such as high temperatures and humidity — and social factors are likely to lower the risk of transmission there.

The virus continued to disrupt plans for public events.

The Russian state health agency warned football fans to stay away from the national team’s World Cup qualifying tie with Wales in Cardiff on September 9.

“This would be an extremely unnecessary and inappropriate undertaking at a time of a flu epidemic,” the head of Russia’s state health agency Gennady Onishchenko said, according to local news agencies.

Onishchenko expressed fears that “the expressions of emotion on the part of football fans involving intense shouting” could lead to the airborne transmission of the flu virus.

Russia has to-date been relatively unscathed by the pandemic, with just 55 confirmed cases.

Plague death toll rises in China

A third man has died of pneumonic plague in north-western China where a town of more than 10,000 people has been sealed off, officials say.

The 64-year-old man was a neighbour of the first two people to die from the plague in Ziketan in Qinghai Province.
Police have set up checkpoints around Ziketan, as medics are disinfecting the area and killing rats and insects.
Pneumonic plague, which attacks the lungs, can spread from person to person or from animals to people.

Fatah: All of Jerusalem must be returned before negotiations

The sixth Fatah General Assembly decreed on Saturday that the return of both east and west Jerusalem to Palestinian control was a “red line” which was non-negotiable, and would need to be fulfilled before any peace talks with Israel could renew, Israel Radio reported.

According to the report, a document adopted by the Fatah delegates of the assembly declared that Palestinians would “continue to be sacrificed until residents of Jerusalem are free of settlements and settlers.” The document went on to state that all of Jerusalem, including the surrounding villages, belonged to the Palestinians, and lands conquered following the Six Day War shared the same status as those located within the Green Line.

Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz blasted the statement Saturday, saying that the declaration was a clear message to all those who maintained the “illusion that the Palestinians were prepared for compromise,” Israel Radio reported.

Israel should take legal steps in response to the decree, Israel Radio quoted the minister as saying. According to the report, he urged the government to expand the municipal authority of Jerusalem to include Ma’aleh Adumim, Givat Ze’ev, Gush Etzion, and Beitar. In addition, Katz encouraged further construction in surrounding neighborhoods so as to increase Jewish presence in the city.

Also at the conference on Saturday, Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas was named head of Fatah.

“This convention must be a new beginning for the Fatah movement,” said Abbas to thunderous applause.

“In our history we’ve had many launches and setbacks. Sometimes we have reached the edge of the abyss – but we have always returned stronger,” he said.

Hundreds of delegates cheered and clapped as senior Fatah official Tayib Abdul Rahim announced that Abbas was chosen to lead the party. There was no vote because no other candidate came forward to challenge Abbas’ five-year rule.

Technically Abbas can only lead the party for five years, until a new conference is announced, but this is the first time Fatah members have met in 20 years and it is not clear when they will convene again.

Fatah delegates meeting here Thursday resolved not to renew peace negotiations with Israel until all Palestinian prisoners are released from Israeli jails, all settlement-building is frozen and the Gaza blockade is lifted.

Nabil Sha’ath, a Fatah Central Committee said these were some of 14 preconditions for a resumption of peace talks.

Analysts noted that the conditions are not binding on Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, but also that they broadly accorded with the positions had Abbas had himself set out in an address to the gathering on Tuesday.

Amid mounting tensions between rival camps, meanwhile, the Fatah delegates are scheduled to vote on Friday for new members of the faction’s two most significant bodies, the Central Committee and the Revolutionary Council.

At least 500 Fatah members have presented their candidacy for the Central Committee (21 seats) and the Revolutionary Council (120 seats).

Many delegates participating in the faction’s sixth General Assembly here on Thursday expressed fear that the infighting will eventually result in a permanent split in Fatah.

The conference, which opened on Tuesday, is the first meeting of its kind in two decades.

The key vote had been supposed to take place earlier, but was delayed after sharp differences erupted at Wednesday’s session between scores of rival delegates.

Eyewitnesses told The Jerusalem Post that at least two delegates, Tawfik Tirawi and Husam Khader, were beaten by security officers for allegedly disrupting the discussions.

Scenes of chaos erupted when the 2,200 delegates attending the conference learned that the Fatah leadership was not planning to present them with a detailed report about the faction’s financial, administrative and political performance over the past 20 years.

Tayeb Abdel Rahim, a senior aide to Abbas, enraged many delegates when he announced that they should consider Abbas’s opening speech a substitute for the report.

Khader, a member of the Palestinian Legislative Council and an outspoken critic of financial corruption in Fatah, said he and many of his colleagues had managed to foil Abbas’s “plot” to market his speech as a comprehensive report.

Khader, who was released from Israeli prison less than a year ago, also said that Abbas and his old-guard friends in Fatah were continuing their efforts to block the emergence of new leaders.

Similar charges were leveled against Abbas and the old guard by Fatah operatives from the Gaza Strip, headed by Muhammad Dahlan, and supporters of jailed West Bank operative Marwan Barghouti.

Both Dahlan and Barghouti are viewed as representatives of the young guard in Fatah.

Dahlan and scores of Fatah delegates from the Gaza Strip on Tuesday had threatened to pull out of the conference under the pretext that Abbas and veteran leaders were seeking to keep them away from the Central Committee and the Revolutionary Council.

Hundreds of Fatah representatives from the Gaza Strip were unable to attend the conference because Hamas refused to allow them to travel to the West Bank.

“The old guard of Fatah is trying to exploit the absence of the Gaza Strip to tighten their grip on Fatah institutions,” said a young-guard Fatah representative. “If they succeed in their scheme, we will withdraw from the conference and form our own Fatah faction in the Gaza Strip.”

As the conference entered its third day Thursday, it became evident that three major camps were competing for control of Fatah.

The first camp consists of old-guard leaders such as Abb

as, Ahmed Qurei, Ahmed Ghnaim and Saeb Erekat. The second, which represents the young guard of Fatah, is headed by Barghouti, Jamal Shobaki, Kadoura Fares and Muhammed Hourani.

The third camp belongs to Dahlan and many of his supporters, especially those living in the Gaza Strip.

Delegates said it was obvious by now that the old-guard leaders had prepared well for the conference by appointing hundreds of their loyalists as delegates to the General Assembly of Fatah.

They pointed out that Barghouti’s name was hardly being mentioned at the conference, whose leaders refused to distribute a letter Barghouti had sent to the assembly from his prison cell. The delegates also noted that many of the key speakers at the parley had refrained from mentioning Barghouti by name.

Other delegates told the Post that Dahlan was also facing an “organized campaign” to distort his image and distance him from Fatah’ s main in

stitutions. Many delegates have gone as far as demanding Dahlan’s expulsion from Fatah, holding him responsible for the faction’s defeat at the hands of Hamas in

the summer of 2007.

Conference spokesman Nabil Amr said that unlike Wednesday’s stormy session, the atmosphere at Thursday’s meetings had been “relatively calm.”

He attributed the quiet to 18 committees, established a day earlier to look into various issues concerning Fatah, starting their work.
