Knowing that Israel, just before the attack that begins the last war of the Age of the Gentiles, would have a mindset she had a time of “Peace and safety,” I issued our Archive Prophecy Update Number 12 more than 8 years ago. Although this could occur in more than one manner, I believe it is most likely to involve the breaking of a long term treaty, which

Islam refers to as a Hudna. Although it is certain, as has been the case in many scenarios over the last eight years, there will be many ups and downs, yes’s and no’s, maybes and no ways, until such a Hudna comes firmly into place. I do believe that is where we are headed in the Middle East. I believe what we issued below is still quite valid today, and now it appears the mindset of “Peace and Safety” is most likely to come to pass through the vehicle of a Hudna, which will be broken suddenly to catch Israel off guard and caught in an Islamic Trap.

The Apostle Paul had a deep spiritual burden for his own people, the nation of Israel. His born again heart longed for them to forsake their unbelief by turning to Jesus as their Messiah. He expresses this desire in Romans 10:1 as he states: “Brethren, my hearts desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they might be saved.” There is no question that Paul saw Israel as being in unbelief. But he knew that some future day they would believe, and consequently be grafted back into God’s olive tree, from which they had been broken off because of their unbelief. He stated this principle in Romans 11:20, as he wrote: “Well, because of unbelief they were broken off.” But he goes on in verse 23 to indicate they will one day believe, and thereby restored to being part of God’s olive tree. He writes, “And they also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again.” I said all this to explain the words “they” and “them” in I Thessalonians 5:3, where Paul states: “For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh on them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.” Paul, in his use of “they” and “them,” is referring to the nation of Israel in unbelief. However, it would also in part apply to all unbelievers

in the last days. So why have I given this discourse? The word translated as “safety” is “asphaleia,” which means “the security one experiences when standing on something that is firmly fixed. It gives the one standing on it a sense of “not falling.” The last four leaders of Israel have worn out the following expression: “We must have a peace with security.” We have heard it used hundreds of times on the media, and it has been printed over and over again in countless articles. Why is this important

? God indicates a time will come when Israel actually believes she has “a peace with security.” Why is it so important that we understand this prediction? Because we can know that the final war, involving Israel’s Islamic neighbors, will not occur until it is fulfilled! Israel must be lulled into a false sense of security before any united Islamic attack against her can be successful.

Until this happens, and it will, I merely wait for it to come to pass. Then, when peace and security for Israel does appear to arrive in the Middle East, you can know that the final war of this age is about to occur. Don’t believe all these terrorist attacks will suddenly cause the final war of this age to begin. It is only when they cease that you can know the last war, which finally produces Armageddon some 3 and ½ years after it begins, is imminent.

‘Hamas ready to deal positively with Obama’s ME peace plan’

Hamas is prepared to deal “positively” with US President Barack Obama’s Middle East peace plan, a top political aide to Ismail Haniyeh, the organization’s prime minister, said Thursday.

“We have an initial readiness to accept it and deal with it positively, but we will also reject it if it doesn’t include an American recognition of the Palestinian rights,” Yousef Rizka told the Chinese Xinhua news agency.

“The plan should endorse Palestinian statehood with Jerusalem as its capital,” Rizka was quoted as saying.

“Hamas will take an in-depth study of the plan when it is made public.”

According to various reports, Obama is soon set to unveil his plan for comprehensive Middle East peace, according to which the West will intensify sanctions against Hamas if it doesn’t respond clearly to the initiative.

Rizka stressed that Hamas makes up its positions “mainly from the level of meeting the Palestinian rights.”

He said that Hamas now accepts a two-state solution “but only in exchange for a long-term truce” with Israel.

“This is a firm position that we cannot give up,” he said.

Tension on Israel-Lebanese border rises as Iran sends Hizballah upgraded missiles

Israel, Lebanon and Iran have been trading charges of responsibility for the rising military tensions on the Lebanese-Israeli border in the past week. DEBKAfile’s military sources disclose that the Lebanese Shiite Hizballah is preparing for the intake of self-propelled anti-air SAM-8 missiles and an upgraded version of the Iranian ground-ground Fateh-110 missile, whose warhead carries half a ton of explosives with a 200-kilometer range.

Iran appears concerned that President Barack Obama, whom Tehran sources see as frustrated by his failure to cut the Assad regime in Damascus away from its bonds with Tehran, may give Israel a green light to punish Hizballah. The Iranians have responded by pumping up allegations of Israeli threats and building up Hizballah’s arsenal with deliveries of advanced air-to-air, ground-to-ground, and shore-to-sea missiles for crippling Israel’s military and battering its civilian population in the event of a flare-up.

In Jerusalem, Israel’s deputy foreign minister Danny Ayalon said Sunday, Aug. 9, that Lebanon would suffer serious consequences from any Hizballah attempt to assassinate Israelis abroad.

Defense minister Ehud Barak also threatened to use “all necessary force” in the event of a fresh conflict on Israel’s northern border.

A Hizballah spokesman countered: “If Barak’s threats are serious – and I don’t think they are – he should be aware that if he commits an error or stupid act against Lebanon… he will find that July and August 2006 were a bit of fun.”

Meanwhile, the Iranians are rushing to their Lebanese proxy the anti-air SA-18 (which performs similarly to the US Stinger) and the self-propelled Sam-8, a few batteries of which Israeli believes have already been delivered.

ation of the regional balance of strength and legitimate targets for attack before both before they leave Syria and at their Lebanese sites.

The Fateh-110, an upgraded Zelzal 2 – which in the 2006 war Hizballah used to strike the northern Israeli towns of Hadera, Afula and the Jezreel Valley – can reach northern Tel Aviv.

The weapon also has greater accuracy due to a Chinese guidance system sold to Iran.

Bad ideas or myths about the Middle East never die, they just get recycled.

Here’s one that’s back in the news: The claim that if the United States abandoned Israel, or downgraded the alliance, or just bashed Israel a bit, that would solve its problems in the Middle East.

The answer is: No. Here’s why.

Begin with a simple experiment you can do in the privacy of your own home without buying special equipment or using any scarce natural resources.

Imagine that the US completely abandons Israel – not that the Obama administration is going to do that, but imagine. No aid, no diplomatic support, or let’s just say a hugely reduced relationship.

What effect would it have on US relations with the Arabic-speaking world and Iran? Your immediate answer might be: They would improve to a huge extent. But that’s not true. Sure, the popularity rating of President Barack Obama and of the US would probably climb a dozen points or so, maybe more, but it would still be relatively low.

But popularity is of little importance in international relations, even in democracies. Governments, not public opinion, make foreign policy.

Such a development would still be largely insignificant due to years of anti-American propaganda unleashed by Mideast regimes on their populations, past history of US interference, differences in ideological views, religion and culture and so on.

NOW LET’S take a closer look. Consider a list of Arabic-speaking regimes generally considered friendly to the US, by the low local standards at least: Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Tunisia, and United Arab Emirates. You can add Yemen if you want. What more would they do for a US that was not considered by them to be pro-Israel? Would they drastically lower the price of oil

ing Iran? How precisely would the regimes act in a way beneficial to US policy or interests?

Remember that they would still be very constrained in their relations with the US for many reasons: America would still be a powerful Western, non-Muslim, non-Arab country and as such mistrusted and not widely liked. These are societies which are not afraid, even in this “enlightened” age, to make clear their distaste for the “other.” Remaining anti-American would still be very beneficial for them, as they would still need a scapegoat – would need one even more without Israel – for their own failures and shortcomings.

At the same time, the oppo site

would also hold true: The regimes know that being more pro-American (Western, non-Muslim, non-Arab superpower that it is) would bring cries of “Traitor!” from their Islamist opponents and from much of their own public, conditioned as it has been by decades of anti-Americanism.

Oh, and what about all that history. They would still demand – even more loudly, having sensed American weakness – reparations and concessions for past years of US support for Israel and all sorts of other American regional policies.

As noted above, there would be a strengthening of a number of factors which would maintain high levels of anti-Americanism and reluctance to move closer to the US.

For example, radical Islamist forces, strengthened by their victory over Israel, or at least US support

for Israel, would press the regimes harder. If they did succeed in wiping Israel off the map, the territory and ample assets of that former Jewish state would be turned into a base of operations and resources for those trying to overthrow the remaining regimes still friendly to America.

The existing regimes would then have to face the prospect of being brought down and replaced by still more energetically anti-American governments or, in trying to avoid that, must seek to appease Islamist opposition and its supporters by proving their own militant, nationalist credentials.

Among other things, this would mean not cooperating with the US.

Ironically, by abandoning one ally, Israel, the US would seem to be a less reliable protector to Arabic-speaking states. If Washington could throw Israel under the bus, how long will it take for the US to sell them out also?

AS FOR the enemies, well, they would remain enemies. That list includes Iran, Libya, Sudan and Syria. They would not say, “Those Americans are really great!

They finally dumped Israel!” They’d say: “America is in decl

ine. It is only a matter of time until it falls. The US is weak and fears us. Let’s redouble our efforts to overthrow the traitorous puppet regimes and expel US influence from the Middle East!”

Oh, wait! They already say that. But they’ll say it even more loudly. The fact that America is seen by them as the main barrier preventing them from taking power in every Muslim-majority state – and possibly moving on from there to world conquest – is still enough to keep their enmity red-hot. Denied having Israel as a scapegoat and focus of hostility, the existing regimes would have a harder time countering their even more radical enemies.

On top of everything else, a nuclear-armed Iran would preen as the leader of these forces which, while exaggerated, is enough of a reality to propel Iran into being the most powerful regional power. Teheran and Damascus, Hamas and Hizbullah would claim that their resistance and pressure intimidated the US from supporting Israel. They’d add: ‘Having defeated both the USSR (in Afghanistan) and America, imagine what we can do next!’

So while it looks good at first glance, dumping Israel is not going to solve even a reasonable portion of America’s problems in the region. Such a move would generate a lot more instability. As for Arab-Israeli peace, well that wouldn’t be on the agenda anymore. Why bother making peace with a country you believe is about to be exterminated.

Now, if America’s dumping Israel isn’t going to greatly solve US problems or bring greater regional stability, do you think stopping construction on settlements will do so? Making speeches about how much one respects Islam? Renaming the “war on terrorism” as the “war on al-Qaida and its allies?”

Let’s face it – even if Western policymakers won’t – there are no easy ways out of the Middle East’s problems and conflicts, especially not at Israel’s expense.

While Israeli youngsters spend summer days crowded around TV screens watching a variety of cartoons and other entertainment programs, in Gaza and the Palestinian Authority, children will be getting quite a different message from some of their TV programming: a message of hatred.

“For many years both Fatah and Hamas have been actively using television for propaganda,” says Itamar Marcus, director of the Palestinian Media Watch. From music videos to the dramatic death of cartoon-like characters, including a Mickey Mouse look-alike named Farfur, the message of martyrdom is being drummed into young minds.

From the first months of the intifada, music videos were being turned out to get young Palestinians into the streets, he says. Starting in January 2001, says Marcus, “there was one where a boy wrote a farewell letter and then went off hoping to be killed.

You see the boy throwing stones, a singer sings his farewell letter, and when he falls dead on the ground, the words in the music video are sung: ‘How sweet is shahada [martyrdom] – ahla shahada – when I am embraced by you, my land.’ And you see him falling down in slow motion. Death as a martyr was presented as sweet, as calm, and there were periods when this was being broadcast three times a day.”

Another music video featured Muhammad al-Dura, who Palestinians claimed was shot by the IDF but which was later disproved.

“It opens with al-Dura calling to children: I’m waving to you not to say goodbye, but to say: Follow me,” says Marcus, whose group monitors the PA, Hamas and other Arab stations that offer such propaganda. “Then you see a reenactment of the event in which he was killed, after which he is shown in child’s paradise where he’s playing with a kite in a grassy field, on the beach, and he’ s even walking toward

s a Ferris wheel. He’s having a wonderful time in child’s paradise, where there are amusement parks, and he’s calling others to follow him. Both these clips ran almost daily on PA TV for years, sometimes many times a day.”

Many videos, all of which can be viewed on the PMW Website (www.palwatch.org) feature very young children. “The farewell video starts as the boy is riding his bike; he’s portrayed as just a little kid riding off on his bike, leaving his father. But he’s also a hero, secretly going to join the popular struggle,” says Marcus. One program that appeared on PA TV last year featured a child in a Palestinian school getting up and reading; “I love the way of shahada, the land will drip my blood.”

CALLING THESE current programs “booster shots” to “get the kids out there,” when needed for rock-throwing or other violence, he says there are “many music videos with continuous violence that depict throwing stones and firebombs as glorious. There was one that ran for a few years in which one child, maybe 10 years old, tells another who appears to be about six that: ‘The stone in their hand will turn into a Kalashnikov.’

Hatred is also promoted in the videos, like one of a young woman “sitting in the rubble of her house, and the boy says: ‘I will avenge the humiliation of my mother.’ Then he goes out with other boys to throw stones, and one of the stones goes through a window with a Magen David on it.”

Another key message on both PA and Hamas children’s TV is that there is no State of Israel, “that there is a world without Israel,” says Marcus. “A special Ramadan program last year featured a geography quiz posing questions like: Name Palestinian ports. The answer? Haifa Port, Ashkelon, Jaffa, Eilat, Ashdod and Gaza.”

“That the world should be viewed as a world without Israel is a very prominent message even today continuing on Palestinian TV, which is under the direct control of Mahmoud Abbas.”

IN THE space of a month, Hamas and Fatah ran identical items on TV. Each program showed young children dancing on television with big keys around their necks, each of which bore the name of an Israeli city.

The Hamas keys were marked Beit She’an, Jerusalem, Haifa, Ramle and Acre and the Fatah ones read Haifa, Ramle, Acre, Jaffa and Beersheba. They keys carried the same message of symbolizing ownership of Israeli cities.

But it was Farfur, the Mickey Mouse character, who really made headlines.

A featured performer on the popular Friday afternoon Al-Aksa TV (Hamas) program Tomorrow’s Pioneers. In 2007, Farfur appeared for a few months before being killed on TV by an “Israeli interrogator.” He was replaced by Nahul, a bee, who also died on TV when Israel refused him medical treatment. “As he died in bed, Saraa, the hostess, says: ‘Congratulations to you. Today we don’t mourn you as if you died, we say congratulations because it’s your wedding.

Congratulations. You are a shahid,'” notes Marcus.

The bee was replaced by a bunny named Assud, which means “lion,” “because he was a bunny on the outside but a lion inside,” explains Marcus. “Among other things he says that because he is a lion, he is going to kill the Jews and eat them. Another time he said that if the Danes ever did another cartoon of Muhammad, he would kill the Danes and eat them, as well.”

In his final video, Assud explains how he went to the headquarters of Al-Aksa TV because he heard Israeli forces might bomb it during Operation Cast Lead. “Saraa sits with him as he’s dying, and he says: ‘Tell the children that Assud has died, died as a hero, died as a shahid….’ She tries unsuccessfully to revive him, and then the children all say: ‘We will sacrifice ourselves for you, O Palestine.’ The message is that if Assud can be a shahid, all the children can be.

“Assud was replaced by a bear named Nassur, who declares war on the Zionists. He says to Saraa: ‘You are ready, Saraa, we are all ready to sacrifice ourselves for the homeland.'”

“CHILDREN ARE very attracted to these characters,” notes Marcus, “Kids fall in love with them, and then right in front of their eyes, these characters… become shahid, one after another, killed on television by Israel. It creates intense hatred. In fact, we’ve had children call in to the program and say: ‘We hate the Jews because they killed Farfur.’ The life-size dolls have been turned into the perfect tools to imprint hatred on young minds.

“They realize that if they can indoctrinate their children at a very young age that Israel and the Jews are the enemy, they won’t have much trouble getting them to join the violence and terror against Israel as they grow older.”

Marcus, who has traveled the world lecturing on Palestinian society and education, recently told a group of Swedish MPs, who supply funding to the PA: “When you fund the Palestinian Authority directly you are responsible for the continuation of of hate education, and for the wars we will fight in the next generation.”

“Once Palestinian society has decided to teach children that death is better than life, a message we find in Palestinian schoolbooks, as well, they don’t see any problem in brainwashing young children because they’re convinced that they are brainwashing them to higher values,” Marcus explains. “They feel they are instilling what they see as the greatest Islamic value, and will use any tool to do it, including Mickey Mouse.”

Exploiting the children of suicide bombers for propaganda purposes is not beyond the pale for Al-Aksa TV. Only recently, the two young children of woman suicide bomber Reem Riyashi, who killed four Israelis at the Erez crossing in 2004, were brought into the studio, where a reenactment video clip of their mother’s suicide terror was shown in their presence.

“In the music video the girl playing Riyashi’s daughter sees the actress playing her mother hiding the bomb she’s preparing, and asks ‘What are you holding in your hand? I’m an orphan, you criminal… You took everything from me, Bush.”

After the White House is miraculously turned into a mosque, the boy takes the “sword of Islam” and stabs Bush several times, making stabbing sounds as he does so.

“The most serious thing is that they are recruiting children at a very young age – four, five, 10 – totally recruited to war which is against international law, which forbids this,” says Carmon. “When they recruit children for killing, for war, for jihad, show them using swords – that’s illegitimate. They are recruiting young minds to war. They are inculcat

ing violence in their little souls.

After running into a dead end in its efforts to jump-start Middle East peace talks, the Obama administration has signaled that it has evaluated the situation and understands that not all is well. But instead of a course correction, senior administration officials have decided that what they need to do is to deploy their most effective weapon – the rhetorical brilliance of President Barack Obama – on a recalcitrant state of Israel.

They say that in the next few weeks the White House will begin a public relations program in Israel and Arab countries to better explain the president’s intention to broker a comprehensive peace agreement. The highlight would be interviews with Obama on Israeli television as well as appearances broadcast in Arab countries. In particular, the officials say they hope to convince the majority of Israelis, who have been shown in polls to view Obama and his policies with distrust, to support his stand on freezing building in Jewish settlements in the West Bank as well as in Jerusalem, rather than the policies of Binyamin Netanyahu, their own prime minister.

THE IDEA here seems to be that if the Israeli people are sufficiently exposed to the charms of the American president, they will force Netanyahu to do as he has been told by Washington. However, the administration misunderstands the nature of its problem. Contrary to its belief, the Israeli people already understand Obama very well. His problem is that they don’t buy what he’s selling. Indeed, this decision to launch a PR campaign reminds one of stereotypically “ugly American” tourists who believe the proper response to foreigners who don’t understand English is to merely speak English louder. The administration needs to win the trust of Israelis through more realistic policies, not a bigger megaphone.

The reason many Israelis think they have been singled out for rough treatment by Obama is not because they don’t understand that his intentions are good and that his motives are pure; it’s because he has unfairly singled them out. The dispute about settlements between the two governments was a calculated decision on the part of Washington to pick a fight with its smaller ally and raise the stakes until Netanyahu gave in. That would have handed Obama an easy triumph and a way to show the Arab world that American friends of Israel no longer have a decisive say in American foreign policy.

But that’s not what happened and the administration appears to be baffled by the reaction inside Israel to the ginned-up settlements squabble. Instead of behaving as most liberal American Jews have done and blindly backing Obama’s pressure because of partisan loyalties and support for the administration’s domestic agenda, ordinary Israelis are supporting their prime minister and viewing Obama with suspicion.

Why? It is true that part of the problem has to do with perceptions. Obama’s Cairo speech in June was offensive because of the way he equated the Holocaust with the predicament of Palestinian refugees and the fact that he snubbed the Jewish state by avoiding it during his Middle East tour. But the problem is bigger than either the president’s penchant for false moral equivalencies or his itinerary.

OBAMA’S POLICY seems to be based on the notion that Israel’s refusal to make new concessions on security and land is the primary obstacle

to a peace breakthrough. Though most Israelis would actually be willing to give up most settlements, they know that neither the Fatah-ruled Palestinian Authority in the West Bank nor the Hamas mini-state in Gaza are interested in a peace that would recognize the legitimacy of a Jewish state, no matter where the borders were drawn. The failure of the Oslo Accords, the July 2000 Camp David summit, the withdrawal from Gaza in 2005 and last year’s desperate effort by former prime minister Ehud Olmert to hand the PA a state on a silver platter all illustrate the Palestinians’ lack of interest in signing such a deal.

In the clear absence of a credible peace partner, what point is there, they are entitled to ask, in bullying Israel to make concessions? Nor has anyone been impressed by the administration’s half-hearted attempt to get the Saudis and other Arab states to act as if they mean it when they claim to want peace.

President Obama has not turned out to be a conventional liberal Democrat who is also willing to be a faithful friend of Israel as many, if not most Jewish Democrats expected when they pulled the lever for him last year. Though Republican talking points that asserted that Obama’s associations with anti-Israel extremists such as Rev.

Jeremiah Wright and Palestinian scholar Rashid Khalidi would color his judgment in office were dismissed by the vast majority of Jewish voters, it turns out there was more to this line of argument than mere partisanship. As his decision last week to honor former Irish president Mary Robinson, best remembered for presiding over the orgy of anti-Semitism that characterized the 2001 UN Durban conference, with the presidential Medal of Freedom again shows, Obama is not a man who understands or respects mainstream Jewish sensibilities.

Obama’s eloquence is a formidable diplomatic tool, but the idea that it can be used to convince Israelis to “reflect” on their policies and change their tune is not only astoundingly arrogant, it’ s frankly wrong.

Israelis already want peace, and have shown time and again they are ready to make sacrifices to achieve it. What is lacking is a similar commitment from the Palestinians. No amount of presidential eloquence or American PR ought to convince Israelis that further concessions will bring peace until Palestinian leaders match Obama’s words with deeds.

The National Jewish Democratic Council (NJDC) recently criticized the Web site

American Thinker in a Jerusalem Post op-ed entitled The chutzpah of Obama’s Jewish critics for having a “fictional understanding” of Barack Obama’s approach toward Israel. This kind of attack is typical of the NJDC which maintains a “see no evil, hear no evil” approach toward the president on this and every other issue. This willful blindness is both wrongheaded and a disservice to Jews who care about the fate of Israel.

By its loyalty to a president who has gone out of his way to distance his administration from Israel, and who has singled it out for harsh criticism while emboldening its adversaries, the NJDC has served as an enabler of Obama’s Mideast mischief.

Increasingly, Obama is being referred to as the least friendly president toward Israel since its founding. In recent weeks, even liberal media organs, such as The New York Times, The Washington Post and The New Republic, have criticized the president’s approach to Israel in articles, columns and editorials. The assistant editor of The New Republic, James Kirchick, wrote an op-ed in June saying Obama has betrayed Israel and blames him for the decline in American support for Israel. Somehow all this has escaped the attention of the NJDC, a group that has the gumption to call Obama a great friend of Israel’s.

We disagree.

THE AMERICAN Thinker was prescient in being wary of Obama’s views toward Israel early on. We published our first article on this topic in March 2007, based on Obama’s own words before a pro-Israel advocacy group which revealed very little empathy for the Israeli people. We wondered how he came to have his views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Did they come from Jeremiah Wright – a man who he credited with calibrating his “moral compass”? Or was it from Palestinian activists and friends such as Ali Abunimah, founder of the Electronic Intifada, or Rashid Khalidi, former PLO spokesman and fierce opponent of Israel, whom Obama credits with informing his views of the Middle East? Or perhaps from Samantha Power, his closest foreign policy adviser, who has a long history of anti-Israel views – including cutting off foreign aid and imposing a peace settlement between Israel and the Palestinians, which might require an invasion by foreign troops

?

Even The Los Angeles Times perceived the reality behind the façade when it published an article “Allies of Palestinians have a friend in Obama.” Indeed they do.

Given his words and actions in just six months in office, it should come as no surprise that only six percent of Israelis now regard Obama as pro-Israel. Campaign promises have become “just words” as Obama himself might describe them. Israelis, as the Jerusalem Post-hosted blogger Shmuel Rosner put it, understand what Obama’s Change agenda means for them.

What changes have we seen over the last few months

? Obama has shown a coolness toward Israel that has warmed the hearts of its enemies around the world and has hardenened the resolve of its adversaries. Mahmoud Abbas and the supposed ‘moderate’ Palestinian Authority have refused to make any overtures toward Israel, and the current Fatah Convention is keeping alive the armed struggle. Jordan and Saudi Arabia have also refused to offer any concilia

tory gestures. Israel’s enemies may now feel secure in thinking that Israel will be delivered to them on the proverbial silver platter.

OBAMA IS the one who should be charged with having a fictionalized understanding of the conflict and Israel’s history. During his speech in Cairo, Obama made clear that he thinks Israel was founded as an act of atonement by the Western world for the Holocaust, a narrative that is both an insult to the 3,000-year history of the Jewish people and one that reflects the ideology of Arab and Persian rejectionists – that guilty Europeans stole the land to create the state of Israel. Did President Obama not learn anything during that widely publicized photo-op Seder?

During that speech, Obama also equated the Holocaust to the Palestinian predicament, which to a large extent has been caused by the Palestinians’ self-destructive behavior.

This was not only wrong but an insult to the memory of the 6 million people who were murdered by the Nazis.

While Obama seems to have an infinite degree of patience regarding the Iranian nuclear program, his administration has been on an obsessive quest to halt Israeli settlements, demanding a complete freeze, a policy that ignores prior agreements between president George W. Bush and prime minister Ariel Sharon.

Further, the State Department has called in Israel’s ambassador twice in recent weeks to harangue him over the building of 20 apartments in Jerusalem, and challenging an Israeli Supreme Court decision ordering the removal of Palestinian squatters from two apartments in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood. This level of interference brings into question whether the Obama administration considers Israel a sovereign nation or an American vassal. His approach to peacemaking makes clear that he believes the Israelis are the obstacle to peace in the region, ignoring a long history of Arab rejectionism.

Is this a way to create trust with a nation which has already shown the willingness to make sacrifices (and suffered for doing so) such as the withdrawal from southern Lebanon and from Gaza?

While meeting with a group of Jewish leaders, Obama made clear that he intended to create “daylight” between Israel and America, arguing that the two countries had been too close for eight years, during which no progress toward peace had occurred.

Again, Obama fictionalizes history: Israel has taken many steps for peace with very little to show for it other than rocket attacks and suicide bombings. During the same meeting, Obama had the audacity to lecture the Israelis to be more self-reflective – a condescending, contemptuous statement given the nature of Israeli society. After 60 years of near total rejection of Israel’s existence or permanence in the region, perhaps the president might have counseled some self-reflection by the Arabs and Palestinians.

WHILE OBAMA focuses his ire on Israel, Teheran gets a pass, and continues to spin its centrifuges. Here in America, the NJDC continues spinning too – for its man in the White House. Israelis are not buying the spin. Even some Jewish Democrats seem to have become a bit concerned by the bait and switch on Obama’s policies toward Israel. As independent unpaid writers who support a strong US-Israel relationship, we will continue to report the facts in American Thinker, not the spin required of paid propagandists.

Netanyahu warns Lebanon over Hezbollah power-share

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel will hold Lebanon responsible for any future Hezbollah attack should the Iranian- and Syrian-backed militia be brought into Beirut’s incoming government, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Monday.

Though U.S.-backed Lebanese Prime Minister-designate Saad al-Hariri bested Hezbollah in a June ballot, he is holding talks on a new coalition expected to include the Shi’ite group and its allies. Hezbollah has a minister in the outgoing cabinet.

Israel fought Hezbollah in its southern Lebanese bastions in a 2006 war but has accused the guerrillas of rearming under the noses of U.N. peacekeepers and plotting attacks on Israelis to avenge the assassination of a top militia leader last year.

Some analysts believe that Israel, which has hinted it could attack arch-foe Iran’s nuclear facilities, also wants to blunt Hezbollah’s ability to serve as a retaliatory arm of Tehran.

“If Hezbollah joins the Lebanese government as an official entity, let it be clear that the Lebanese government, as far as we are concerned, is responsible for any attack — any attack — from its area on the state of Israel,” Netanyahu told reporters.

“It cannot hide and say: ‘It’s Hezbollah, we don’t control them.'”

Triggered by Hezbollah’s capture of two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid, the 2006 summer war exacted a heavy toll on Lebanese infrastructure.

Some 1,200 people in Lebanon, mostly civilians, and 158 Israelis,

mostly soldiers, were killed.

BORDERLINE CALM

Israel credits the offensive with keeping the border largely quiet since, but Hezbollah has said it is ready to fight again and is determined to hit back for the Feb. 12, 2008 killing of its military mastermind, Imad Moughniyeh, in a Damascus car-bombing.

Israel denied involvement in that slaying, and has warned that Hezbollah and Lebanon would bear the consequences for any reprisals against Israelis abroad.

Netanyahu’s threat followed similar comments by the Israeli defence minister and deputy foreign minister in recent days. The spiralling rhetoric has stirred speculation on both sides of the frontier that a fresh conflict could be in the making.

Senior Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hashim Safieddin said on Sunday that if Israel attacked Lebanon again, the group’s response would make the 2006 war seem like “a joke”, Lebanese media reported.

Underlining the point on Monday, deputy Hezbollah leader Sheikh Naim Kassem said Israel would face a “heavy” price if it attacked. “They know that we now are in a better position (than before) and in an excellent state of readiness,” he told the group’s al-Manar television station.

Asked about Netanyahu’s remarks, Deputy Israeli Prime Minister Dan Meridor said they were intended to preserve the quiet through deterrence. But he also made clear that Israel regards its neighbour as a potential Iranian proxy.

“Hezbollah is a terror organisation that has become a semi-army.

Basically, it is a branch of Iran on our northern border, with Syria’s consent and with Lebanon’s consent. This is not a healthy phenomenon,” Meridor told Israel Radio.

Assumed to have the Middle East’s only atomic arsenal, Israel has questioned the efficacy of U.S.-led efforts to curb Iran’s nuclear programme through diplomacy.

Iran denies seeking the bomb but has stoked regional jitters with virulently anti-Israel statements and support for Hezbollah and Palestinian Islamist militants similarly arrayed against the Jewish state.

BEIRUT – Tension mounted Monday in southern Lebanon after an Israeli forces reportedly advanced to the area of the Shebaa farms, forcing the Lebanese army on alert, a Lebanese army source said.

The source said three armoured Israeli vehicles, accompanied by a civilian car, advanced towards Shebaa Farms, located at the junction of south-east Lebanon, south-west Syria and northern Israel.

Israel seized the 25-square-kilometre swath of land rich in water resources from Syria in the 1967 Middle East war when it captured the neighbouring Golan Heights, which it later annexed.

Since then, the Shebaa Farms have been caught in a tug-of-war between the three nations. Lebanon claims, with the backing of Syria, that Shebaa is Lebanese. Meanwhile, Israel says the area is part of Syria and that their fate should be discussed in future peace talks with Israel.

The Lebanese army, stationed on its side of the border, has been placed on high alert, deploying tanks and positioning soldiers inside fortifications, the Lebanese military source added.

For its part, the United Nations Interim Forces in southern Lebanon (UNIFIL) also sent patrols to observe the situation.
