The Palestinians are descendants of the Canaanites. During their ownership time the vill age w

as named Luz, but it got a name change to Bethel when God gave it to the man Israel and his future seed. God gave the West Bank to Israel, and for me that settles the issue as to its ownership. The world does not accept God’s word as the final authority, but I do!

Bethel, meaning “House of El” or “House of God”, also transliterated Beth El, Beth-El, or Beit El) was a border city described in the Old Testament as being located between Benjamin and Ephraim. Eusebius of Caesarea and Jerome describe it in their time as a small village that lay 12 Roman miles north of Jerusalem, to the right or east of the road leading to Neapolis.

Edward Robinson identified the Palestinian Arab village of Beitin in the West Bank with ancient Bethel in Biblical Researches in Palestine, 1838-52.

He based this assessment on its fitting the location described in earlier texts, and on

the philological similarities between

the modern and ancient name, arguing that the replacement of the Hebrew el with the Arabic in was not unusual.

After the establishment of Israel in Palestine in 1948, the biblical name was applied to an Israeli settlement constructed adjacent to Beitin.

Bethel is mentioned several times in Genesis. It is first mentioned in Genesis 12, but the best-known instance is probably Genesis 28, when Jacob, fleeing from the wrath of his brother Esau, falls asleep on a stone and dreams of a ladder stretching between Heaven and Earth and thronged with angels; Yahweh stands at the top of the ladder, and promises Jacob the land of Canaan; when Jacob awakes he anoints the stone (baetylus) with oil and names the place Bethel. Another account, from Genesis 35[5] repeats the covenant with God and the naming of the place (as El-Bethel), and makes this the site of Jacob’s own change of name to Israel. Both versions state that the original name of the place was Luz, a Canaanite name.

Obama and Netanyahu close to settlement construction accord – Jerusalem excluded

US Middle East envoy George Mitchell and Yitzhak Molcho, special adviser to Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, are tying up the last ends of an understanding on West Bank settlement construction between the Obama administration and Israeli prime minister Binyamin Netanyahu, DEBKAfile’s Washington sources disclose.

The two officials have been meeting in the US capital.

Our sources report that the understanding rests on four principles:

1. Israel will maintain a freeze on new settlement construction. (This week, transport minister Eliahu Atias said that all new projects for West Bank settlements have been “on hold” in the five months since Netanyahu took office.) In the next three years, the prime minister’s office and defense ministry will only grant permits for some hundreds of building projects appearing on an agreed list. A joint US-Israeli team is now working on the final list.

2. Obama will stop demanding a total freeze.

3. The two governments agreed to disagree on construction in Jerusalem, including the eastern side, which will continue uninterrupted – as will Washington’s criticism on this point.

4. The Obama administration has made it clear that any confrontation with the Netanyahu government is undesirable; relations between the White House and PMO will henceforth revert to their normal friendly level.

The two parties also agreed that the US-Israel understanding on the settlements and their limited expansion will not be published or brought before the government in Jerusalem for endorsement.

Defense minister Ehud Barak will be the only minister with full knowledge of its contents and in Washington, only Vice President Joe Biden, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel and Mitchell – seven individuals in all in both capitals.

Mitchell was the live wire pushing for an accord and smoothing away the obstacles and differences, according to one Washington source.

It was he who prevailed on President Obama to step away from a showdown with Netanyahu.

Netanyahu and Mitchell will finally approve the draft when they meet in London on Aug. 26, a date insisted on by Obama because he has set Sept. 10 as the deadline for his own team to finish their Middle East policy review (which was first revealed by DEBKAfile).

The prime minister’s approach to an understanding on the settlement dispute with the US president has caused unrest among some ministers, especially in the right wing. It prompted Deputy Prime Minister Moshe Yaalon to meet the Jewish Leadership Division, the most nationalist faction of the ruling Likud party Wednesday, Aug.

19. He was applauded when he described the opposition Peace Now group and other “Israeli elites” as “viruses” because of their antagonism to settlements and settlers.

“I hold to the position that Jews are at liberty to settle and build in every part of the Land of Israel,” he stated with emphasis.

That night, Netanyahu’s office issued a reprimand saying that the prime minister finds Yaalon’s words and style unacceptable.

Iranian Chief of Staff Firouzabadi Writes Letter to Hidden Imam

On July 12, 2009,

the Iranian news agency ISNA published a letter written by Iranian chief of staff Hassan Firouzabadi to the Hidden Imam (the Shi’ite messiah, also called the Mahdi). In his letter, Firouzabadi depicts the post-election protests as a conspiracy against the Iranian regime by the West and the reformists in Iran. He also rejects accusations of Basij brutality, saying that the group did not act against the Iranian people in suppressing the protests, but rather tried to protect them. He concludes by urging the Hidden Imam to come speedily and launch a worldwide Islamic revolution.

Following are excerpts from the letter: (1)

“O Lord of Time (2), peace be upon you… I wish to speak to you once again… [In 1979,] as the celebrations and rejoicing over the Islamic Revolution still reverberated [in the streets], America, the West, as well as the [Iranian] infidel parties on orders from their masters, [were already hastening] to turn every corner of Iran – including Kurdistan, Gonabad, Khuzestan, Amol and Tehran – into arenas of brutal psychological warfare and hotspots of secessionism, essentially striving to annihilate the Islamic Revolution and [its] regime…

“[Today] another round has begun in the cultural attack [on Iran]… In the current round, some of those involved [meaning Mousavi and his supporters] turned their backs on the glorious past of the [Islamic] Revolution, and wished to join Uncle Sam, thereby bringing shame upon the sacrifice and istishhad of our nation. They wished to launch a dialogue with those who attack the rights of the free [peoples] and condemn and assault the values of the [Islamic] Revolution, [i.e. those who attack] freedom, the Imam [Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini], the rule of the jurisprudent, and the clerics…

“Those [Iranians] who constantly spoke of tolerance towards the dissidents, chanting [pluralistic] slogans like ‘long live those who oppose me,’ [actually] wanted the Basij philosophy dead. The essence of the reforms that they wanted was to eliminate the Basij and its philosophy… They targeted the very foundations of the regime, viewing the Basij, and all the revolutionaries and believing [Muslims] in the nation, as an obstacle in their path. They brought about a catastrophe, harmed [the regime] and violated its sanctity, started fires, and fanned the enemy’s hope. They blamed the Basij for crimes that they themselves had committed [a reference to allegations of Basij brutality during the suppression of the protests]…

“When the Arrogance [i.e. the U.S.] saw its hope of toppling the regime dwindle, it mobilized the anti-Basij front, composed of old anti-revolutionary [Iranian] forces and fragments of [groups] that had been disbanded, whose common denominator is hostility towards the Basij and its philosophy, and towards [Iran’s] national awakening.

“This front began its war, orchestrated by [the West], under the guise of [participation in] the presidential elections. When it failed to win, thanks to the praiseworthy participation of 40 million voters, it became enraged, and instigated a bitter civil war. This civil war, which from the outside looked like a ‘velvet revolution’ but from the inside was harsh and brutal, targeted the culture and people of my homeland.

“[O Hidden Imam], you are my witness that [the members of] the armed forces and the Basij regarded all the [presidential] candidates as [honest] revolutionaries, and [some of them] voted for [these candidates]…, as did [other] Iranians, according to the dictates of

their conscience. Despite this, you witnessed the curses and accusations that [these presidential candidates] hurled at us. They harmed the people’s security, and when we stood up to defend the people, they called us dictators and tried to disgrace us…

“Dearest Mahdi, we have taught our children and our grandchildren to await your arrival, and to raise the banner of this holy regime until you do… O lord, please beseech God, as we do, that the Islamic Revolution take root alongside the worldwide revolution that you [will bring]…

“Awaiting your arrival, Hassan Firouzabadi.”

The 12th Imam of Islamic Belief

In both the Sunni and Shiite branches of Islam, an Imam is an anointed leader or ruler. The Shiite branch believes an Imam is to be a prayer leader or cleric if the word is capitalized.

Sunnis too believe an Imam may be a prophet; Shiites believe not all prophets can be an Imam but an Imam can also be a prophet. An Imam is said to be anointed by Allah and a perfect example of leading mankind in every way.

The Shiites believe only Allah can appoint an Imam and no man has the power to do so. The 12th Imam is said to be a descendent of the Prophet Muhammad, having divine status as did his succession of sons. The 12th Imam is also called the Mahdi (guided one) and the Hidden Imam. He is the Islamic version of the Jewish and Christian Messiah.

Among the Shiite it is prophesied that there is a coming 12th Imam who is the great spiritual savior. This Imam is identified as Abu al-Qasim Muhammad or Muhammad al Mahdi. He is said to have been born the son of the 11th Imam, Hasan Al-Askari and his wife, the granddaughter of an Emperor. Most of the Islamic world identifies her Fatima, but a few call her Nargis Khatoon.

Most accounts of the story say that al Mahdi went into hiding as a child around the age of 5 years during 10th Century as the first Great Islamic Caliphate died by the sword of the European Infidels. It said he has been ‘in hiding’ in underground caverns of the earth ever since but will supernaturally return just before the Day of Judgment. He will be a leader rising supernaturally from the 10th Century Caliphate death by the sword of Europe to become the eighth and last of seven other evil kingdoms kingdom before it on this earth. The Islamic Hadith lists some of the criteria for the Hidden Imam’s characteristics and timings as follows:

He will be a descendant of Muhammad and the son of Fatima

Will return just before the end of the world

His appearance will be preceded by a number of prophetic events during 3 years of horrendous world chaos, tyranny and oppression

Will rule over the Arabs and the world for 7 years Will eradicate all tyranny and oppression bringing harmony and total peace

Will lead a prayer in Mekkah which Jesus will be at his side and follow in

The 12th Imam theory plays heavily into the world’s current concerns with Iran.

The Shiite Muslim President of Iran, Ahmadinejad, is deeply committed to the Islamic Messiah, al Mahdi. There have been many through the years claiming to be the Hidden Imam but Ahmadinejad believes he is yet to come. He claims that he is to personally prepare the world for the coming Mahdi. In order to save the world, it must be in a state of chaos and subjugation. Ahmadinejad claims he was “directed by Allah to pave the way for the glorious appearance of the Mahdi”. This apocalyptic directive includes some very scary proclamations.

While Christians look for Jesus’ 2nd coming, the Jews await the Messiah and Muslims await the 12th Imam.

However, of the three, Allah’s designated Mahdi is the only one who demands a violent path to conquer the world. Mr. Ahmadinejad, and his cabinet, say they have a ‘signed contract’ with al Mahdi in which they pledge themselves to his work. What does this work involve? In light of concerns over Iran’s nuclear capabilities, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has reportedly stated Israel should be wiped off the map.

He spoke to the United Nations in September ’05. During that speech he claims to have been in an aura of light and felt a change in the atmosphere during which time no one present could blink their eyes.

Iran’s PM is also said to have spoken in apocalyptic terms and seems to relish conflict with the West whom he calls the Great Satan. This is while he proclaims he must prepare the world for the coming Mahdi by way of a world totally under Muslim control. He is working hard to bring about the world-wide horrors that must be in place for their al Mahdi to bring peace.

The Umayyad Dynasty (Banu Umayyah), whose name derives from Umayya ibn Abd Shams, the great-grandfather of the first Umayyad caliph, was the first dynasty of the Muslim Caliphate, 660–750. The Umayyad Arab Caliphate is historically the sixth largest empire, the third largest contiguous empire and the third largest empire by percentage of world population (29.5%). Damascus was the capital.

Twelver Shi’as believe that Mahdi was born in 868 AD as Hujjat ibn Hasan ibn Ali. There is debate within the Twelver community who his mother is. Many believe his mother, Narjis (Melika), was a Byzantine princess who pretended to be a slave so that she might travel from her kingdom to Arabia.

His father, Hasan al-Askari, is believed to have been the eleventh and penultimate Shi’a Imam. Shi’as believe that his birth was kept a secret due to the persecution that the Shi’a were facing during this time at the hands of Al-Mu’tamid, the Abbasid Caliph.

To support Mahdi’s claim, Twelver Shi’as quote the following Hadith: “I and `Ali are the fathers of this nation; whoever knows us very well also knows Allah, and whoever denies us also denies Allah, the Unique, the Mighty. And from `Ali’s descendants are my grandsons al¬-Hasan and al-¬Husayn, who are the masters of the youths of Paradise, and from al-¬Husayn’s descendants shall be nine: whoever obeys them obeys me, and whoever disobeys them also disobeys me; the ninth among them is their Qa’im and Mahdi.” (These Hadiths are not recognized as authentic by Sunnis)

The eleventh Shi’a Imam Hasan al-Askari died on 1 January 874 AD (8th Rabi’ al-awwal, 260 AH) and since that day, his son Mahdi is believed by Shi’as to be the Imam, appointed by God, to lead the believers of the era. The most popular account of al-Mahdi in Shi’a literature is taken from his father’s funeral. It is reported that as the funeral prayer was about to begin, al-Mahdi’s uncle, Jafar ibn Ali approached to lead the prayers.

However, al-Mahdi approached and commanded, “Move aside, uncle; only an Imam can lead the funeral prayer of an Imam.” Jafar moved aside, and the five-year-old child led the funeral prayer for his father. It is reported that it was at this very moment that al-Mahdi disappeared and went into ghaybat, or occultation.

The Occultation

Shi’as believe that, for various reasons, God concealed the twelfth and current Shi’a Imam, al-Mahdi, from humankind.

Period

The period of occultation (ghaybat) is believed to consist of two parts:

Ghaybat al-Sughra or Minor Occultation (874-939) is the shorter of the two periods, during which deputies of the Imam maintained communication to the rest of the world.

Ghaybat al-Kubra or Major Occultation began 939 and is believed to continue until a time decided by God, when the Mahdi will reappear to bring absolute justice to the world.

A caliphate, (khilaafah), is the Islamic form of government representing the political unity and leadership of the Muslim world. The head of state’s position (Caliph) is based on the notion of a successor to the Islamic prophet Muhammad’s political authority.

According to Sunnis he is ideally a member of the Quraysh tribe elected by Muslims or their representatives; and according to Shia Islam, an Imam descended in a line from the Ahl al-Bayt. From the time of Muhammad until 1924, successive and contemporary caliphates were held by various dynasties, including the Umayyads (who were driven from Damascus to Córdoba), the Abbasids (who ruled from Baghdad and drove away the Umayyads from Damascus), the Fatimids (who ruled from Cairo), and finally the Ottomans.

The caliphate is the only form of governance that has full approval in traditional Islamic theology, and “is the core political concept of Sunni Islam, by the consensus of the Muslim majority in the early centuries.”

Middle East war is inevitable regardless of who is president because the Word of God must come to pass.

Nevertheless, it has been interesting to see if the great compassion Obama expressed during his election campaign would match his actions toward Israel after he secured the office of president.

President Barack Obama’s actions since his election have not matched the words he spoke concerning his continuation of great U.S. support for Israel carried out by the presidents before him.

Poll: Only 12 percent of Israelis believe Obama supports Israel

Only 12 percent of Israelis believe U.S. President Barack Obama’s policies are supportive of Israel, according to a poll released on Thursday.

The poll was conducted jointly by the Ramallah-based Palestinian Center for Police and Survey Research and the Harry

S. Truman Research Institute for the Advancement of Peace at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

It was conducted between August 9 and 15.

The poll also found that 64 per cent of Palestinians still feel Obama’s policy is more supportive of Israel, while 40 per cent of Israelis think it is more support of the Palestinians.

According to the poll, a majority of Israelis were unhappy with the results of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’ Fatah conference which ended Saturday, according to a joint Palestinian-Israeli poll published Thursday.

The poll found that 59 per cent of Israelis believe that in the light of the resolutions taken by the Fatah conference, Israel does not have a partner for peace negotiations.

While the Fatah conference said that resistance remains a legitimate option to liberate the occupied Palestinian territories, it nevertheless said that it gives full support for negotiations to resolve the decades-old Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

Negotiations came to a halt follow ing the election of a right-w

ing government in Israel headed by Benjamin Netanyahu. Palestinians demand a halt to Israeli settlement activities in the occupied territories and an acceptance of the two-state solution before negotiations can resume.

The United States Barack Obama Administration has been working with both sides to find common ground for resumption of negotiations.

It called on Israel to freeze construction in the settlements, including for the so-called reasons of natural growth, while calling on the Palestinians and Arabs to take confidence-building steps toward Israel.

Nevertheless, neither Palestinians nor Israelis interviewed for the poll have confidence in the U.S. policy in spite of its intensive involvement in the Middle East conflict.

When asked about whether US President Barack Obama was rethinking his decision to give Mary Robinson his nation’s highest civilian award, a spokesman for the White House was quoted as saying that the president “had no second thoughts” about giving the former Irish president the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Indeed, the ceremony went off without a hitch and nary a discouraging word as Robinson and 15 other less controversial recipients got their medals amid a blizzard of presidential praise.

Obama lauded Robinson, the woman who presided over the United Nation’s anti-Semitic hate fest at the 2001 Durban Conference on racism, as “an advocate for the hungry and the hunted, the forgotten and the ignored,” and ignored the widespread criticism of the honoree from a wide range of Jewish groups as well as some members of Congress.

Robinson is a longtime foe of the Jewish state and even today holds the post of honorary president of Oxfam, an NGO that gained publicity

last week for firing actress Kirstin Davis of Sex and the City fame as its spokeswoman because she also represents Ahava, whose Dead Sea cosmetics are considered off-limits by Israel-haters.

Though the dustup over Robinson cast something of a shadow on an event that is almost always non-controversial (because the White House generally eliminates questionable candidates), the dispute did not generate a great deal of publicity. It was Robinson’s good fortune that the weeks leading up to the ceremony were dominated by a divisive national debate over health care reform.

Even Obama’s most virulent critics on the right were too preoccupied with the debate over the president’s massive expansion of government power for it to register much of an impact on the nation’s political Richter scale.

BUT FRIENDS of Israel, especially those Jewish Democrats who have been doing their best to ignore the White House’s increasingly belligerent tone toward the Jewish state, would do well to note what happened with Robinson.

Obama honored a virulent enemy of Israel, someone who bore a great deal of responsibility for Durban, one of the most disgraceful episodes in the history of an institution – the UN – that is no stranger to disgrace. And he has gotten away with it with hardly a scratch on his reputation.

Though some will dismiss this incident as a minor mistake that will soon be forgotten, the main lesson to be learned here may not be the one about presidential award nominations needing to be more thoroughly vetted. Rather, it may be that as much as this was an unforced error on the part of the White House, what Obama and his advisers may take away from this incident is how easily they were able to dismiss a nearly universal Jewish dismay.

In the weeks to come, the president and his foreign-policy team are said to be preparing what we are told is a new Middle East peace plan. The upshot of this exercise may be some sort of peace conference doomed to certain failure because neither of the two leading Palestinian factions – the supposedly more moderate Fatah that runs the Palestinian Authority and the Islamist terrorists of Hamas – have any real interest in a peace deal with Israel.

As Robert Malley, the former Clinton administration staffer, who is a prominent critic of Israel, wrote in The New York Times last week, for either group “to accept Israel as a Jewish state would legitimize the Zionist enterprise that brought about their tragedy. It would render the Palestinian national struggle at best meaningless, at worst criminal.” Thus, the only possible purpose of the Obama initiative will be to attempt again to bludgeon Israel into making concessions to Palestinians that are uninterested in peace.

THE ADMINISTRATION is also still committed to “engagement” with Iran’s despotic Islamist regime and continues to appear uninterested in any serious effort to stop Teheran from gaining nuclear capability. Though both Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Defense Secretary Robert Gates have talked about giving the Iranians until after the General Assembly of the United Nations meets this fall before attempting to organize more stringent sanctions, this is not a credible stance since such efforts will not only be undermined by lackluster European support and open opposition from China and Russia, they will almost certainly be too late to stop Teheran’s nuclear timetable.

On both these issues, despite their hopes that Obama may ultimately step back from a full-throttle battle, the pro-Israel community may soon find itself looking into the business end of a White House propaganda machine that will feel confident about dismissing concerns about Israel’s security in much the same way that they have trashed opponents of their health care plan.

There are those who take the point of view that the willingness of mainstream groups such as the Anti-Defamation League and others to allow any daylight to be seen between themselves and the White House on the Robinson affair is a sign that Jewish spines are stiffening in response to Obama’s attitude on Jewish security issues. But that strikes me as over-optimistic at best since left-wing groups with growing clout among administration circles, such as J Street, dutifully supported the president on the issue. So long as his leftist base sticks with him, it’s doubtful that the president will worry about support from mainstream liberals who are loathe to make common cause with Obama’s critics.

Though they may have been surprised that any major Jewish groups had the chutzpah to oppose the president even on this issue, the nonchalance with which Obama and his apologists road roughshod over any opposition to the award may well have taught the White House that they can get away with anything.

There may have been some who thought Robinson’s award would prove to be Obama’s Bitburg moment – a symbolic episode that forever tarnished Ronald Reagan’s reputation even among his most ardent Jewish supporters.

But while Reagan paid a heavy price for offending Jewish sensibilities by honoring dead SS members at a German cemetery, Obama escaped from the Robinson award with few scars and little media attention to the story.

Far from serving as a warning to the White House to tread carefully in the future when it comes to Israel or the Jews, Mary Robinson’s medal may turn out instead to be a trial run for far worse outrages yet

to come from this president.

Syria slams campaign against Robinson

Israel has carried out an “crazy campaign” against former Irish president Mary Robinson and all others who have “brought fairness” to the Palestinian issue, an adviser to Syrian President Bashar Assad declared in an editorial published Monday in Saudi Arabia’s Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper.

In the editorial, Dr. Bouthaina Shaaban blasted Israel’s policy and influence over the world media, and lamented the Arab media’s inability to address these issues properly.

She criticized Defense Minister Ehud Barak for stating that Israel would not allow weapons to break the balance in Lebanon, and also slammed Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman’s recent South American tour and his claims that Hizbullah was active in Venezuela.

Shaaban stated that Israel singled out and accused “notable world figures who criticized its actions, such as Robinson. Israel fears people such as Robinson because they are holding up torches to the truth of the Israeli-Palestinian issue and saying that the conflict must become an international matter.”

Israel continued to Judaicize Jerusalem, she added, and claimed that Israel’s actions were part of a “Zionist strategy aimed at intimidating moderates and instilling fear in Arabs of Israel’s power.” She accused Israel of carrying out an “international campaign to incite world opinion against the Arabs.”

In the editorial, she denounced Israel for allocating Hebrew names to locations throughout Israel and wrote that Israel purposely characterized the Israeli-Palestinian conflict as religious instead of political.

Near the end, Shaaban addressed the recent Human Rights Watch report, which she claimed revealed that Israeli soldiers had killed and expelled women and children from their homes, in addition to using white phosphorus, during Operation Cast Lead.

In response, a spokesman for Israel’s Foreign Ministry told The Jerusalem Post, “We have no intention of commenting on an editorial that we have no intention of reading.”

A former pr ofessor

of English literature at Damascus University, Shaaban is an outspoken critic of the United States and Israel, and has published a number of pieces sharply critical of Israeli and American actions. Her Web site has published a number of her editorial pieces and lectures.

In one piece written in April, she denounced The Economist magazine for discussing the genocide in Rwanda that took place 15 years ago, but not mentioning the “no less terrible genocide in Palestine.”

In a lecture at Sapienza University in Rome in 2007, she accused the US of conducting an illegal war in Iraq and Israel an illegal occupation of Palestine. She also claimed that it had not been proven that Arab terrorists committed the September 11 attacks.

“Nobody truly investigated 9/11. We don’t have results about what happened, what truly happened in 9/11. But whoever masterminded it, whoever did it, the results of 9/11 are the creation of the feeling in the Western world against Muslims and Arabs, the distortion of Arab civilization, of Arab culture, of Arab life, of Arab humanity even, in the minds of the West,” said Shaaban. “If you ask my opinion there’s a big attack on Arab identity, on Arab civilization, on Arab culture.

The objective is not only the Iraqis, the Palestinians or the Lebanese, it is the Arab culture.”

Terra Incognita: A new type of Islamic militancy

The sudden and bloody fighting that broke out at a mosque in the Gaza Strip on Friday is emblematic of a new phenomenon within the Islamist movement. From Gaza to northern Nigeria and Pakistan, and throughout the Islamic world, a new type of militancy has grown, one that involves extremist preachers, their followers begging for martyrdom, and self-destructive battles that result in their deaths, usually at the hands of fellow Muslims.

THE PHENOMENON of extremist religious movements surrounding inspired preachers is surely not new nor confined to Islam. Revivalist Christian sects such as the Branch Davidians and their leader David Koresh clashed with US police in 1993 with tragic results, and in India the Sikh leader Bhindranwale led a militant independence movement that resulted in thousands of deaths. The Ghost Dance which swept up Native American communities in 1890 was led by the Paiute prophet known as Wovoka and resulted in the Wounded Knee massacre where over 300 people died. The practitioners believed their special religious garments would repel bullets.

A similar phenomenon occurred in China in 1900 when a religious society known as the Boxers produced a wave of anti-Western militancy led by men who believed their devotion could protect them from bullets. Their movement was destroyed by the intervention of European armies.

A minority branch of the Islamic faith known as the Isma’ilis produced a radical sect known as the Assassins who spent the 11th and 12th centuries harassing and murdering Muslim and Christian leaders in the Middle East before being exterminated by the Mongols in 1256. In Israel’s War of Independence in 1948, an extremist Muslim Brotherhood unit wearing supposedly protective garments stormed Jewish Kfar Darom in Gaza resulting in the deaths of most of its members who had travelled from North Africa. (Kfar Darom fell to the Egyptian army soon after.) Indonesia has been stricken by Islamist revival movements since the 19th century, partly sparked by the Krakatoa eruption of 1883 where thousands of people died after a volcano eruption nearly destroyed the island, which today manifest themselves in the groups like Darul Islam and Jemaah Islamiyah.

Islamism it seems is beginning to produce more and more radical fringe movements that, far from being part of a unifying umbrella as al-Qaida intended, are “linked to al-Qaida” but succeed mostly in fighting Muslim governments and destroying themselves as well as civilians located near their mosques. The July 2007 Siege of the Red Mosque in Pakistan was one such example.

It was led by brothers Maulana Abdul Aziz and Abdul Rashid Ghazi, sons of a radical preacher named Maulana Qari Abdullah who founded the mosque in 1965.

A series of escalating incidents led to an eight-day siege of the mosque in which 11 Pakistani special forces, 84 mosque members and 14 civilians were killed.

On July 31, following days of fighting, Muhammad Yusuf of the Boko Haram sect was killed in northern Nigeria. His sect had launched a series of attacks on police stations, churches and government offices in several northern Nigerian states. More than 200 people died before the army launched an assault on the organization’s mosque, capturing Yusuf who later died in custody.

But the most famous example of an extremist Islamist uprising is the siege of Mecca, so well documented in a recent book, The Siege of Mecca, by Yasoslav Trofimov. On November 20, 1979 some 500 armed followers of Juhaiman ibn Muhammad ibn Saif al-Utaibi, a member of a leading Saudi family, layed siege to the Grand Mosque in Mecca. The standoff lasted 14 days during which 250 militants and 130 Saudi national guardsmen were killed.

The leader of the group was later beheaded, along with 67 of his followers.

IN THE afternoon hours of August 14, word came out of Gaza of a gun battle between radical Islamists who had proclaimed a caliphate and members of Hamas, which controls the Gaza Strip. Some 100 members of Jund Ansar Allah led by Abdel-Latif Moussa, a radical preacher at the Ibn Taymiyah mosque, were confronted by Hamas security forces that surrounded the mosque and a shootout ensued.

Initial reports claim up to 24 people died, including six Hamas police officers and one civilian.

The leader of the group reportedly blew himself up.

All of these examples point to a new trend in Islamism. It was once thought that Islamists primarily viewed themselves at war with secular Muslim regimes. That later morphed into al-Qaida, which viewed itself as being at war with the entire non-Muslim world, inspiring such movements across the world.

Now Islamists are turning on each other. The BBC described the situation, in a tongue in cheek manner, as one group “accusing the Islamist group of not being Islamist enough.”

The one thing that unites all of these events is disappointment with unfulfilled Islamist government, guns, mosques and preachers who seek to revive an Islamic past, whether the mahdi, as in Saudi Arabia’s siege, or the caliphate, as in Gaza. A secondary problem is that it makes pernicious tyrannical governments such as Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Gaza’s Hamas seem more benign because they are “fighting terrorism” or “they too are threatened by extremists.” In fact their support, or in

the case of Nigeria, the appeasement, of Islamism helps breed further radicalism.
