In the past the major culprits that have always been responsible for famines were war and drought. However, as I indicated in my first book in the seventies, the world population explosion was beginning to be an ever increasing factor and, in time, would be the major culprit.

According to the World Food Program (WFP), hunger is the number one cause of death in the world today.

The WFP announced recently it had fed 130 million people in 2005, and that this was the largest number of beneficiaries since the agency was formed 42 years ago.

According to a February 2, 2006 article in the Guardian Unlimited, the United Nations figures show “Sub-Saharan Africa is in the grip of an extraordinary hunger crisis, with more than 40-million people needing emergency food aid across 36 countries.” It has risen to that figure in Sub-Saharan from 21-million in 1995.

Some say don’t worry, agricultural technology will solve the famine problem.

No way! The latest U.N. study found ten percent of the world’s soil profile badly damaged. The three-year study accessed soil conditions on a global scale, and involved more than 250 soil scientists. It marked the first time since World War II that soil profiles had been assessed on a global scale.

Stammer in the Los Angeles Times, the study found that “about two-thirds of all seriously eroded land is in Asia and Africa, home to most of the world’s poor.” The article, using the report as its basis, stated: “Despite the much acclaimed green revolution of the past several decades, which produced unprecedented gains in food production through the introduction of fertilizers and hybrid grains, the per-capita food production has declined in about eighty developing countries in the past decade.”

The report, “Vital Signs 1993: The Trends That Are Shaping Our Future,” as reported by David Brisco in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette of July 18, 1993, stated: “This new report shows the first clear sign that population is outpacing the food available for humans. The trend is mostly because of record world population growth, but also reflects a slowdown in decades of increasing food supplies.

The main sources of food – farms, ranches, and oceans – all appear to be approaching, or may have reached, their maximum per-capita output, according to Vital Signs 1993.” The simple truth is this, the world’s maximum food production, in the 21st century, has not been able to keep up with the stork, and the ever increasing population will cause it to fall farther and farther behind. Earthquakes, pestilence, and famine will continue to increase the pain of God’s creation while it awaits the manifestation of his sons at the appearance of his only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.

High food prices have pushed another 105 million people into hunger in the first half of 2009, the head of the UN World Food Program said Friday, raising the total number of hungry people to over 1 billion.

Urging rich nations at a meeting of G8 development ministers not to cut back on aid, Josette Sheeran said the world faced a human catastrophe as more people struggle to eat a decent meal.

“This year we are clocking in on average four million new hungry people a week, urgently hungry,” Sheeran told Reuters.

“For the first six months of this year, 105 million people have been added,” she said, citing figures to be released by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization next week that will raise the total number of undernourished people to over 1 billion.

In 2008, FAO said the world’s hungry numbered 963 million.

The WFP needs $6.4 billion this year for food aid, but donors’ contributions have fallen way behind that level – it had around $1.5 billion at the end of last week.

The agency said it has had to cut food aid rations and shut some operations in eastern Africa and North Korea because of the credit crunch.

“I know it seems a big figure, but if you compare it with the global stimulus package, it means that for less than 1 percent of that we could help meet the urgent human crisis that is unfolding, and that is just as essential to the stability of the world,” Sheeran said.

She said despite a decline in most food prices from record peaks last year, they remained high in developing countries, while global food aid was at a 20-year low.

The financial crisis has made things worse, and in terms of staple food, people in poorer countries today can only afford about a third of what they could afford three years ago.

Aid promises

In a statement after a two-day meeting in Rome, G8 ministers reaffirmed their commitment to honor existing aid promises and the head of USAID said President Barack Obama wanted to double US aid funds to $52 billion by 2015.

“(This) sends a signal, I think, to the rest of the world that we cannot pull back on our support,” USAID Acting Administrator Alonzo Fulgham told Reuters.

But a report this week said the G8 was collectively off course in delivering on a pledge – made at a G8 summit in Scotland in 2005 – to more than double aid to Africa to $25 billion a year by 2010.

The report, by anti-poverty body ONE, was particularly critical of Italy, saying Rome was trailing far behind other nations in meeting aid targets and that undermined its credibility as G8 president this year.

“We have confirmed our commitment to find the resources this year to bring us back on track and fulfill our undertakings,” Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini told reporters on Friday, responding to the report.

ONE said Italy had delivered only three percent of the aid increase to Africa pledged by Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi four years ago.

Ahead of his current trip to the Middle East, US President Barack Obama’s Middle East envoy George Mitchell made what might have been construed as a positive step in Israel’s direction. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Mitchell said that he and Obama wish to restart peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians immediately.

The reason Mitchell’s pronouncement might have been interpreted as a move in Israel’s direction is because until he made his call for negotiations, recent pronouncements on Israel and the Palestinians by the president and his senior advisers have given the uniform impression that the US no longer favors a negotiated settlement of the Palestinian conflict with Israel.

Through their obsessive focus on Israeli building activities in Judea and Samaria, Obama and his advisers have sent regional leaders the message that they define their role here not as mediators, but as agents for the Palestinians against Israel.

Consequently, far from giving the sense that they seek a peace deal that will be acceptable to Israelis and Palestinians alike, they have convinced the Israelis and the Palestinians – as well as much of the Arab world – that the US intends to coerce Israel into accepting a settlement that sacrifices Israeli security and national needs on the altar of maximalist Palestinian ambitions.

This is the view that Fatah leader and putative Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas expressed in his interview with The Washington Post last month ahead of his visit with Obama. As Abbas put it, the Americans “can use their weight with anyone around the world. Two years ago they used their weight on us. Now they should tell the Israelis, ‘You have to comply with the conditions.'”

Abbas added that he will “wait for Israel to freeze settlements,” and that until he receives this and other Israeli concessions, “we can’t talk to anyone.”

In other words, in light of the administration’s apparent hostility and uncompromising stance toward Israel, Abbas sees no reason to negotiate anything with the Israelis.

So, too, Hamas leader Khaled Mashaal made clear on Tuesday that he sees the Obama administration as a potential ally for his Iranian-controlled genocidal jihadist movement. Mashaal has four good reasons for viewing things this way. First, in his speech

in Cairo, Obama accepted the Arab view that Israel is an alien entity to the Middle East which owes its legitimacy to the genocide of European Jewry by Europeans in Europe, and which has the moral standing of white slaveholders in the antebellum American South.

Second, Obama has pledged $900 million in US taxpayer funds to Hamas-controlled Gaza and is pressuring Israel to support Gaza economically in spite of the fact that Hamas continues to attack southern Israel with rockets and to expand and diversify its arsenals.

Third, the Obama administration is abandoning its predecessor’s bid to isolate Hamas by pressuring Fatah and Egypt to offer Hamas full partnership in a Fatah-Hamas unity government which would work to cement Hamas’s international legitimacy.

Finally, in light of the White House’s silence after Sunday’s attempted attack on the IDF by a Hamas-affiliated terror group in Gaza, Mashaal is operating under the impression that nothing Hamas does will divert Washington from its collision course with Israel. With Obama in charge, Hamas believes it can attack Israel with impunity.

So with Israelis and Palestinians now joined in their belief that Obama is looking for a fight with Israel rather than a negotiated settlement, it was encouraging to hear that Mitchell is planning on forcing the Palestinians to the negotiating table with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s government.

Unfortunately, within hours of his arrival in Israel on Tuesday, it became clear that Mitchell’s statements about negotiations were nothing more than spin. He reiterated that the US has no intention whatsoever of budging on its uncompromising positions that no Jewish construction anywhere past the 1949 armistice lines is legitimate; that Israel must begin moving toward a mass expulsion of Jews from Judea and Samaria; and that the IDF must drastically curtail its counterterror operations in Judea and Samaria. That is, Mitchell demonstrated that like the Palestinians and the Saudis, the Obama administration’s idea of a resolution of the Palestinian conflict with Israel involves a complete Israeli surrender to all Arab (and now American) demands while trusting our security to the tender mercies of Palestinian terrorists.

MORE DISTURBING than Mitchell’s positions are his marching orders from Obama. Unlike previous presidential envoys who have come to Israel every few weeks and then disappeared when reality proved stronger than their peace fantasies, Obama has ordered Mitchell to cast reality to the seven winds and set up a permanent forward command post in Jerusalem directly subordinate to the White House.

To fulfill his writ, Mitchell has appointed four deputies – all known for their open sympathy for the Palestinians and their hostility to the Netanyahu government. They are Mara Rudman, of the George Soros-financed Center for American Progress; Lt.-Gen. Keith Dayton, who is now building a Fatah army in Jordan which he recently reportedly acknowledged will turn its American-financed guns on Israel within a few short years if Israel refuses to establish a Jew-free Palestinian state in Judea and Samaria; Fred Hoff, one of the greatest champions of a US-Syrian rapprochement and of an Israeli surrender of the Golan Heights; and David Hale, the architect of the current US policy of rebuilding the Hizbullah-infested Lebanese army. Hale will be permanently stationed in Jerusalem in a large office suite that will house Mitchell’s operation.

Aside from overseeing his deputies, Mitchell has also been charged with leading a new administration program aimed at undermining Israel’s ability to make independent military and intelligence decisions. Back in 2008, when Obama’s National Security Adviser Gen.

Jim Jones served as then-secretary of state Condoleezza Rice’s special adviser on Israeli-Palestinian security issues, he authored a report calling for the US to assess what Israel’s “real” security interests in Judea and Samaria are and to limit US support to Israel to filling those necessarily minimal interests. Jones’s report, which rejected all Israeli claims in Judea and Samaria and underplayed the strategic significance of Palestinian rejection of Israel’s right to exist, was viewed as deeply hostile toward Israel, and the Olmert government prevailed on the Bush administration to set it aside.

This is not the case today, however.

Obama shares Jones’s view that Israel’s perception of its security needs is exaggerated. As he made clear in his speeches last week at Cairo and Buchenwald, Obama thinks that Israel suffers from a Holocaust-induced paranoia that causes it to wrongly believe that Arabs and Iranians wish to wipe it off the map. In Obama’s view, Israel’s fears can be dealt with, and a Middle East peace can be wrought through a US takeover of both Israel’s security assessments and its military and intelligence operations and policies.

To this end, and in line with Jones’s 2008 report, according to last Friday’s Yediot Aharonot, the administration is building an apparatus designed to prevent Israel from exercising independent judgments about its tactical and strategic challenges and deny it the ability to secure its interests without US involvement and consent.

The apparatus reportedly includes members of every US security, foreign policy and intelligence body. These officers will be stationed in Israel and will report to Mitchell, who in turn will report to Jones and Obama. Each officer will be assigned to coordinate with Israeli counterparts in mirror organizations, including the IDF, the Shin Beit, the Mossad, the police and every other relevant Israeli body.

Since there is no polite way for Israel to reject this effective US bid to subvert its capacity to make independent decisions, the most urgent dilemma the Netanyahu government must solve is how to handle Mitchell’s new supreme headquarters in Jerusalem. To address this issue, the government must be clear about what it wishes to accomplish in its relations with Mitchell specifically and the Obama administration generally.

As the Obama administration’s treatment of Israel to date shows clearly, the president and his advisers have no intention of compromising their hardline positions on Israel. The administration is building its supreme headquarters in Jerusalem to enable Mitchell to act like a colonial governor and confront the unruly Jewish natives – not to cut a deal with us.

ISRAEL HAS nothing to gain, and much to lose from an open and prolonged confrontation

with Washington. And so Netanyahu’s goal in contending with Mitchell must be twofold: He must seek to avoid an ugly fight with the White House, and he must do so while yielding nothing of substance to the Mitchell command post.

Netanyahu clearly hopes to achieve this goal by showing great respect for Mitchell.

On Tuesday he reportedly devoted a full four hours of his schedule to talks with Mitchell and his aides.

While understandable, Netanyahu’s willingness to humor Mitchell is a recipe for disaster. Netanyahu cannot allow Mitchell to tie him or his senior ministers down for hours at a time in fruitless discussions about Obama’s peace fantasies, or about which set of suicidal Israeli “gestures” might assuage the Obama administration’s hunger for a confrontation. Bluntly stated, Israel’s prime minister has better things to do with his time. Moreover, Netanyahu cannot debase his office by subordinating his schedule to the whims of a mere presidential envoy.

And so, as former US ambassador to the UN John Bolton first suggested in January during his visit to Israel, Netanyahu must elegantly remove himself from Mitchell’s orbit.

To this end, in his policy speech at Bar-Ilan University’s Begin-Sadat Center on Sunday, Netanyahu should announce that in the interests of fostering cooperation with the US and advancing prospects for peace, he is appointing a special prime ministerial envoy to Obama’s special presidential envoy Mitchell. This envoy – and his purposely inflated staff – should be charged with handling all contacts with Mitchell and his staff and reporting all of their suggestions to Netanyahu for his consideration.

Netanyahu’s special envoy should be a senior persona whom he trusts implicitly. Prime candidates for the position would be Dore Gold – who served as UN ambassador during Netanyahu’s first term as prime minister – and former minister Natan Sharansky – who Netanyahu has nominated to head the Jewish Agency. Either man would be more than capable of respectfully deflecting US pressure on the Palestinian issue away from Netanyahu and so freeing the prime minister to attend to the Iranian threat.

And that’s the thing of it. At the end of

t he day, Netanyahu has three main challenges that

he must meet if he is to successfully protect Israel in the coming years.

He must prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. He must secure Israel’s national and strategic interests in Judea and Samaria and sole Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem. And he must do what he can to avoid an open breach with Washington.

By deploying Mitchell to Jerusalem, Obama is trying to prevent Netanyahu from achieving any of these aims. Only by neutralizing Mitchell will Netanyahu free his schedule to contend with them.

I agree with his sentiments in the quoted paragraph. The status quo is changing more rapidly in this country than in the Revolutionary and Civil Wars. We need to “get people thinking about what effect new laws and policies can have on them if they don’t pay attention.”

I am afraid the consequence of this is going to be great inflation, such that prices will rise so high it will seem as if we have holes in our pockets. Our ways have been the underlying cause of our ills, and if we do not wake up and consider them before our creator, it can only get worse. Do I expect Americans to do that

Destruction of the American Economy: The Nightmare Scenario

At the beginning of 2009, the economy was in trouble. President Obama initiated what many thought was a sweeping stimulus package that would save the economy. Though there were some voices who said the trillion dollar package would put us in enormous debt, they were largely shouted down. The stimulus, along with other legislation, actually started growing our debt into the tens of trillions of dollars. This was still nothing compared to what would come.

Even though there were some fiscally conservative democrats who would not vote for more stimulus packages, Obama did it through executive orders and hidden in other legislation.

The types of legislation had been democrats’ favorite pet projects that they would not vote against.

It was learned that many legislators could not and would not even try to read bills that are hundreds or thousands of pages long. When the Obama administration got the localization act (new fairness doctrine) passed, that bill alone added another 15 trillion dollars in debt that even conservative Republicans didn’t recognize because they were too busy fighting the main context of the bill. This is what led China to slowly dump must of its US dollar reserves.

As if the economic collapse that was about to happen wasn’t enough, the more obvious problem facing the United States and the world was the wave of nuclear proliferation that could no longer be ignored. By mid 2010 Iran had tested a nuclear weapon. It was also found that Syria was able to continue their nuclear program.

Syria and Iran became verified members of the nuclear club. That was not even the most stunning news. The fact that Syria was openly selling nuclear material to Lebanon, Egypt and Libya was a surprise to many analysts.

President Obama initially tried to downplay this move but when the news broke that North Korean ICBMs had been shipped to these countries in 2008, everyone knew that the Middle East was just in the beginning stages of a nuclear arms build up.

With bad news coming in from every direction, it made sense that Obama pushed for the localization act. The localization act was supposed to promote racial equality in the ownership and running of radio stations throughout the country but everyone knew it was really a revived fairness doctrine. This act, along with the blog tax and Internet tax that Obama imposed, shut down many opposing voices who couldn’t afford to operate under the new rules. Rush Limbaugh was the last man standing, but he was hampered because a lot of his information had come from conservative writers who wrote for papers like the Wall Street Journal. But the Journal and other conservative papers, such as the Washington Times, were forced to take the newspaper bailout funds and then were forced into bankruptcy because the Obama newspaper Czar cited them as failing businesses. The papers reemerged from bankruptcy but the owners and management were replaced with liberals who ran the papers into the ground. The Journal was later bought out by the New York Times. Rush Limbaugh still fought against Obama on conservative principals, until he was arrested for hate crimes. One of Limbaugh’s broadcasts supposedly caused a riot at the Freedom of Speech march in Washington D.C. Everyone knew the riot was actually caused by the police trying to arrest people who were only peacefully protesting.

No other prominent voices stood up for Limbaugh, out of fear. This gave Obama a much freer hand to act for the rest of his first term.

Unemployment had hit 18 percent by the end of 2011. The Euro had replaced the dollar as the standard currency that the world used and that devalued the dollar so much that gas prices had rose to almost $10 a gallon. With the US economy almost completely collapsing, many Americans were crossing the border

into Canada after the government there had started turning more toward the right. After an estimated 800,000 people had moved north, Canada was forced to close the border.
The economic situation had become so bad, it was obvious that Obama would not be reelected. The Obama administration kept saying that the recovery would start in the beginning of 2013 after he was able to create more federal jobs by adding 500,000 positions to the civilian security force.

Nobody was buying the Obama administration claims as it was obvious they were desperate grasps at remaining in power.

In September 2012 however, a container ship in New York harbor was able to fire a small rocket into the city that was carrying a tactical nuclear weapon. The nuke killed almost a million people instantly. The Obama administration used this to declare martial law and suspend the upcoming elections, until as he put it, America was able to get back to a normal working democracy.

This is probably my last post as I believe my server has been found and will be shut down within the hour.

I’m not saying this scenario will happen or even that it is likely to happen, but if you don’t think one or some of these things could occur, then you are not using your imagination enough. After having watched Obama since he became President, I am becoming more and more convinced he is now carrying out the teachings of Black Liberation Theology in the spirit and guise of precisely what Reverend Wright stated: “He’s got to do what politicians do.” He is not just a young lamb who sat innocently under Wright for 20 years. It now appears to me he did listen and, with the clever tongue and guile of today’s politicians, he is putting it in practice while leading liberals down a garden path to the end of the Age of the Gentiles. He is not only leading liberals, but a majority of all Americans. Wake up America!

Wright’s Black Liberation Theology (Part I)

What is Black liberation theology anyway? Barrack Obama’s former pastor, Jeremiah Wright catapulted black liberation theology onto a national stage, when America discovered Trinity United Church of Christ. Understanding the background of the movement might give better clarity into Wright’s recent vitriolic preaching. A clear definition of Black theology was first given formulation in 1969 by the National Committee of Black Church Men in the midst of the civil-rights movement:

“Black theology is a theology of black liberation. It seeks to plumb the black condition in the light of God’s revelation in Jesus Christ, so that the black community can see that the gospel is commensurate with the achievements of black humanity. Black theology is a theology of ‘blackness.’ It is the affirmation of black humanity that emancipates black people from White racism, thus providing authentic freedom for both White and black people.

It affirms the humanity of White people in that it says ‘No’ to the encroachment of White oppression.”

In the 1960s, Black churches began to focus their attention beyond helping Blacks cope with national racial discrimination particularly in urban areas.

The notion of “Blackness” is not merely a reference to skin color, but rather is a symbol of oppression that can be applied to all persons of color who have a history of oppression (except Whites, of course). So in this sense, as Wright notes, “Jesus was a poor black man” because he lived in oppression at the hands of “rich White people.” The overall emphasis of Black liberation theology is the Black struggle for liberation from various forms of “White racism” and oppression.

James Cone, the chief architect of black liberation theology in his book A Black Theology of Liberation (1970), develops Black theology as a system. In this new formulation, Christian theology is a theology of liberation–”a rational study of the being of God in the world in light of the existential situation of an oppressed community, relating the forces of liberation to the essence of the gospel, which is Jesus Christ,” writes Cone. Black consciousness and the Black experience of oppression orient black liberation theology–i.e., one of victimization from White oppression.

One of the tasks of Black theology, says Cone, is to analyze the nature of the gospel of Jesus Christ in light of the experience of oppressed Blacks. For Cone, no theology is Christian theology unless it arises from oppressed communities and interprets Jesus’ work as that of liberation.

Christian theology is understood in terms of systemic and structural relationships between two main groups: victims (the oppressed) and victimizers (oppressors). In Cone’s context, writing in the late 1960s and early 1970s, the great event of Christ’s liberation was freeing African Americans from the centuries-old tyranny of White racism and White oppression.

American White theology, which Cone never clearly defines, is charged with having failed to help Blacks in the struggle for liberation. Black theology exists because “White religionists” failed to relate the gospel of Jesus to the pain of being Black in a White racist society.

For Black theologians White Americans do not have the ability to recognize the humanity in persons of color, Blacks need their own theology to affirm their identity in terms of a reality that is anti-Black–Blackness stands for all victims of White oppression. “White theology,” when formed in isolation from the Black experience, becomes a theology of White oppressors, serving as divine sanction from criminal acts committed against Blacks. Cone argues that even those White theologians who try to connect theology to Black suffering rarely utter a word that is relevant to the Black experience in America. White theology is not Christian theology at all. There is but one guiding principle of Black theology: an unqualified commitment to the Black community as that community seeks to define its existence in the light of God’s liberating work in the world.

As such, Black theology is a survival theology because it helps Blacks navigate Wh

ite dominance in American culture. In Cone’s view, Whites consider Blacks animals, outside of the realm of humanity, and attempted to destroy Black identity through racial assimilation and integration programs–as if Blacks have no legitimate existence apart from Whiteness. Black theology is the theological expression of a people deprived of social and political power. God is not the God of White religion but the God of Black existence. In Cone’s understanding, truth is not objective but subjective–a personal experience of the Ultimate in the midst of degradation.

The echoes of Cone’s theology bled through, the now infamous, anti-Hilary excerpt by Rev.

Wright. Clinton is among the oppressing class (”rich White people”) and is incapable of understanding oppression (”ain’t never been called a n-gg-r”) but Jesus knows what it was like because he was “a poor black man” oppressed by “rich White people.” While black liberation theology is not main stream in most black churches, many pastors in Wright’s generation are burdened by Cone’s categories which laid the foundation for many to embrace Marxism and a distorted self-image of perpetual “victim” which we be explored in the next two columns.

Wright says ‘ Jews’ keeping him from Obama’

HAMPTON, Virginia (AP) — President Obama’s controversial former pastor, the Rev Jeremiah Wright, is blaming “them Jews” for keeping him from speaking to the president.

Wright, the former pastor of Chicago’s Trinity United Church of Christ, said he hasn’t spoken to Obama since he became president.

“Them Jews ain’ t going

to let him talk to me.

I told my baby daughter that he’ll talk to me in five years when he’s a lame duck, or in eight years when he’s out of office,” Wright told the Daily Press of Newport News following a Tuesday night sermon at the 95th annual Hampton University Ministers’ Conference.

“They will not let him to talk to somebody who calls a spade what it is.

… I said from the beginning: He’s a politician; I’m a pastor. He’s got to do what politicians do.”

Obama was a longtime member of the church but resigned from it and cut ties with Wright after videos surfaced during the presidential campaign showing Wright’s sometimes provocative sermons. Wright’s incendiary comment included shouting “God damn America” and accusing the government of creating AIDS.

In the interview Tuesday, Wright also criticized Obama for not sending a U.S. delegation to the World Conference on Racism held recently in Geneva, Switzerland, saying Obama chose not to for fear of offending Jews and Israel.

“Ethnic cleansing is going on in Gaza.

Ethnic cleansing (by) the Zionist is a sin and a crime against humanity, and they don’t want Barack talking like that because that’s anti-Israel,” Wright said.

The White House declined to comment to the Associated Press on Thursday on Wright’s remarks. A phone message left by the AP at Wright’s home wasn’t immediately returned.

PA officials expressed deep satisfaction with talks on Wednesday

Chief PA negotiator Saeb Erekat quoted Mitchell as saying that the Obama administration wanted a quick start and a quick end to the peace talks.

Asharq Al-Awsat has learned that during the Egyptian delegation’s visit to
Washington on 26 May, the US briefed Egyptian Intelligence Minister Omar
Suleiman, and Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abu el Gheit, on what Egyptian
sources described as “a plan to end the Palestinian/Israeli conflict within two years on the basis of a two state solution.” Washington then called for a swift response from the Arab side.

The source informed Asharq Al-Awsat that “the US officials also informed the
Egyptian delegation that they had notified Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu of the plan during his recent visit to Washington, and they had called on him to provide a response within six weeks.”

The source added that the Egyptian political leadership sensed that Obama was extremely serious [about achieving peace in the Middle East], and that the only obstacle to this is

the inter-Palestinian division.

Egypt therefore has decided to consult with a number of Arab leaders in order to heal the Palestinian rift as soon as possible. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak has assigned the task of ending the Palestinian division to Egyptian Intelligence Minister General Omar Suleiman, who informed Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas of the situation. Abbas then sent a high-level delegation headed by former Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei to Cairo.

US envoy to visit Lebanon and Syria

The US envoy for the Middle East is set to visit Lebanon and Syria as part of a tour to push forward a regiona

l peace initiative.

George Mitchell will hold meetings in Beirut, the Lebanese capital, on Thursday and Damascus, the Syrian capital, on Friday and Saturday, Ian Kelly, a US state department spokesman, said on Tuesday.

Kelly said that the assignments were being carried out as part of President Barack Obama’s attempts to achieve a “comprehensive peace” in the region.

It will be Mitchell’s first visit to Lebanon and Syria since taking the post, although it is his fourth trip to the region in the same period.

Mitchell is already in the region having landed in Israel on Tuesday in a visit which aims to lay the groundwork for peace negotiations.

‘Immediate talks’

Mitchell opened his meetings with Ehud Barak, the Israeli defence minister, before travelling to Jerusalem to meet Binyamin Netanyahu,

the prime minister, Avigdor Lieberman, the foreign minister, and Shimon Peres, the president.

Mitchell said that Washington wanted Israel and the Palestinians to hold “immediate talks”.

He will hold talks with Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian president, in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday.

“We all share an obligation to create the conditions for the prompt resumption and early conclusion of negotiations,” Mitchell said before meeting Peres.

Al Jazeera’s Jacky Rowland, reporting from Jerusalem, said: “Right at the top of George Mitchell’s agenda is the issue of Israeli settlements in the West Bank.”

“This is an issue that the Americans feel progress can be made on and progress must be made on, in order to create the right kind of atmosphere to push on the peace process with the Palestinians, which has been stalled for a couple of years now.”

“We’re now engaged in serious discussions with our Israeli and Palestinian and regional partners to support these efforts.”

Before setting off for the region, Mitchell told reporters at a Palestinian donors’ conference in the Norwegian capital, Oslo, that renewed talks between Israel and the Palestinians would serve “the security interests of the United States”.

Settlement freeze

Mitchell has long advocated the need for a settlement freeze as necessary for any tangible progress on peacemaking. “Israelis and Palestinians have a responsibility to meet their obligations under the roadmap,” he said on Tuesday, referring to the 2003 agreement which requires the end of settlement construction.

But Israel, apparently unfazed, has continued to build or expand settlements that are considered illegal internationally, arguing that so-called natural expansion cannot be stopped.

Settlement construction has doubled since Israel recommitted to halting itn at the Annapolis conference 18 months ago and there are plans for 75,000 new housing units, one-third of which have already been approved.

Half a million Jews already live in settlement blocks in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Netanyahu has said he is ready to hold talks with Abbas, focusing on economic, security and political issues.

But Palestinians have rejected his proposed shift of focus away from territorial issues, whose complexity, Netanyahu has said, has frustrated US-backed attempts to reach a final peace deal.

Abbas has said renewed negotiations would be pointless unless Netanyahu first endorsed Palestinian statehood and halted the expansion of settlements in the West Bank and east Jerusalem.
