ISRAELI Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will walk into his White House summit prepared to commit to a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, says his Defence Minister and confidant.

Speaking as Mr Netanyahu flew from Jerusalem to Washington yesterday, Ehud Barak said: “I believe Netanyahu is ready for a process whose end is two states for two peoples.”

He said in an interview on Israel’s Channel 2 that he believed a regional peace deal was achievable within three years.

“We need to convince the Americans that we are serious in our intent to reach a regional deal,” Mr Barak said.

“The Arabs say ‘two states’ (and) I don’t see why Netanyahu would not say that at the end of an accord, there will be two people living side by side in peace and mutual respect.”

The meeting with President Barack Obama tonight will be the first since the two men were elected. They met in Jerusalem last year, when both were running for office..

Mr Obama has said since his first days in office that he would “actively” pursue a two-state solution, comments repeatedly endorsed by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and the US special envoy on the Middle East, George Mitchell.

Israel has also been urged by the European Union, and last week by the Pope, to agree to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

The White House visit comes as a new poll published in Israel shows 58 per cent of the country’s Jewish population supports “two states for two peoples”, but shows a large difference in attitudes according to religious orthodoxy and age.

While 73 per cent of secular Jews polled by Rafi Smith said they were in favour of two states, 70 per cent of ultra orthodox were opposed.

Political leadership in the new Israeli Government is clearly aware of support in the country for a two-state solution. Last week, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon said he believed if a poll were to be held now, support would reach 75 per cent.

While Mr Netanyahu is expected to tell Mr Obama he broadly supports a two-state solution, he is likely to say that restrictions should be placed on any Palestinian state to protect Israel’s security – such as not allowing it to have its own army.

The leaders are also likely to disagree about Jewish settlements in the West Bank.

The US has called for an end to the expansion of the settlements and the dismantling of illegal outposts, while the Israeli Government is likely to agree to dismantling illegal outposts, which under Israeli law are illegal.

One of the key players in the Government is Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman. He lives in a settlement and is believed to have insisted when he joined the coalition that Mr Netanyahu agree to build an additional 3000 housing units as part of the largest settlement, Maaleh Adumim, which is on the West Bank between Jerusalem and Ramallah.

Israel has acceded to American demands by pledging to coordinate its moves
on Iran with Washington and not surprise the United States with military
action.

During a trip to Jerusalem earlier this week, CIA chief Leon Panetta
informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that U.S. President Barack Obama
demanded that Israel not launch a surprise attack on Iran. The message
expressed concern that Israel would cause an escalation in the region and
undermine Obama’s efforts to improve relations with Tehran.

However, the content was nothing new: The Bush administration also sent
tough messages to Jerusalem a year ago, including a demand that it not
strike Iran. Israeli officials believe that U.S. foreign policy
professionals are vehemently opposed to an Israeli strike on Iran’s nuclear
facilities, so this position was transmitted from the previous
administration to the present one.

The U.S. expects Israel to coordinate its military actions with Washington,
a condition to which Jerusalem has agreed due to its dependence on U.S. aid.
Senior officials in the Bush administration testified to Congress that
Israel had consulted them before deciding on its 2007 air strike on an
alleged Syrian nuclear reactor. They said Israel had explained that it
considered the Syrian project an existential threat and therefore had to
act.

(IsraelNN.com) The United Nations Security Council issued a statement Monday calling for the creation of a new Arab state in Judea, Samaria and Gaza and the cessation of Jewish development in those same areas. Israel rejected the involvement of the Security Council in what it sees as a bilateral issue.

The declaration, affirmed by 15 member states, was presented by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov. Russia currently chairs the Council.

‘Urgent Efforts’ to Create a New Arab State

“The Council reiterates its call for renewed and urgent efforts by the parties and the international community to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East, based on the vision of a region where two democratic states, Israel and Palestine, will live side by side in peace, within secure and recognized borders,” the U.N. Security Council declared.

To that end, the Council encouraged the Quartet – the U.N., the U.S., Russia and the European Union – “to support the parties in their efforts to achieve a just, lasting and comprehensive peace in the Middle East.”

The Council also called for a comprehensive Middle East peace agreement, including between Israel and Syria.

In her comments to the Council, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice added: “This is a moment that should not be lost and that is why the United States and others are redoubling our efforts to achieve a lasting two-state solution.”

No Jews Allowed

The U.N. also specifically called on Israel to cease all further development of Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria.

“The time has come for Israel to fundamentally change its policies in this regard, as it has repeatedly promised to do,” said U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. Explaining the Arab view, he called continued Jewish development in Judea and Samaria “unacceptable unilateral actions… house demolitions, intensified settlement activity, settler violence, and oppressive movement restrictions due to permits, checkpoints, and the barrier, which are intimately connected to settlements.”

Ki-moon further took the time to counsel Israel that the closure on the Hamas-run jihadist regime in Gaza “does not weaken Israel’s adversaries in Gaza, but does untold damage to the fabric of civilian life.” He and French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner criticized Israel over the inability to get more than food and medicines into Gaza by way of Israel. However, neither leader mentioned Egypt’s hermetic overland closure on Gaza from the south.

Aside from the harsh criticism of Israel, Ki-moon called for an end to “indiscriminate rocket attacks” from Gaza, calling them “deeply unacceptable” and “totally counterproductive”.

Kouchner mentioned the rocket attacks as well, adding that the “window of opportunity” for an Israel-Arab diplomatic agreement “can be calculated in terms of months, not years.”

Israeli Reaction

Israel boycotted the U.N. meeting.

According to a statement by Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Gabriela Shalev, “Israel does not believe that the involvement of the Security Council contributes to the political process in the Middle East. This process should be bilateral and left to the parties themselves.”

The statement continued, “Furthermore, the timing of this Security Council meeting is inappropriate as the Israeli government is in the midst of conducting a policy review, prior to next week’s visit by Prime Minister [Binyamin] Netanyahu to the United States.”

Netanyahu is slated to meet with U.S. President Barack Obama in Washington, D.C. on May 18.

The Palestinian Authority also did not participate in the Security Council meeting.

Pope Benedict XVI Monday joined the international chorus that is demanding the Jews establish an Arab state on Israel’s land.

The head of the Roman Catholic Church aired his plea within minutes of arriving at Ben Gurion Airport at the start of a five-day visit to “the Holy Land.”

Speaking in front of Israeli President Shimon Peres – who had just warmly welcomed him with the Hebrew words, “Blessed is he who comes” – and as Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu looked on, the pope called on “all those responsible to explore every possible avenue in the search for a just resolution of the outstanding difficulties, so that both peoples may live in peace in a homeland of their own within secure and internationally recognized borders.”

Benedict, who is regarded by 1.3 billion people on the planet as God’s representative on earth, was adding his voice to those of virtually every political leader in the world, all of whom are insisting that the Jews hand over the land that same God gave to their forefathers as an everlasting inheritance.

After nearly two decades of their predecessors’ failed and painful efforts to secure peace by doing precisely that, Israel’s new government has indicated its reluctance to comply.

Benedict’s stance, said The Jerusalem Post, immediately “put him at odds with his hosts on a trip aimed at easing strains between the Vatican and Jews.”

The pontiff’s position also contradicts what the Bible says concerning the ownership and future of this Land – and specifically of the so-called “occupied West Bank.”

Hundreds of millions of evangelical Christians strongly oppose what the world is demanding, and exhort Israel’s leaders to withstand the pressure. They believe that the Jews returned from their second exile to reestablish their national homeland in accordance with the foreknown and foretold plan of God.

Netanyahu has in the past described Evangelicals as Israel’s most faithful friends.

In the minds of probably the majority of Israelis, however, the size of the Roman Catholic Church and the consequent massive influence wielded by the pope make it the most important denomination in Christendom.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu traveled to Egypt on Monday for his first trip abroad since taking office, a symbolic move government officials say is designed to signal the importance he places on relations with Cairo and moderates in the Arab world.

That Netanyahu is visiting Egypt even before he goes to the US, where he will travel on May 17, shows how important he feels the ties with Egypt are, one government official said. Egyptian-Israeli relations were strained earlier in the year by the appointment of Avigdor Lieberman as foreign minister.

in Sharm e-Sheikh would also show the importance Israel attached to the involvement of moderate Arab countries in the peace process, as well as in containing Iran and its local proxies Hizbullah and Hamas.

Israel would like to see Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia play a greater role in the peace process, as well as in pushing back against Iranian efforts to make further inroads in the region, the official said.

Netanyahu believes that while the Iranian threat is a very serious challenge, it also provides an opportunity because Iran does not just threaten Israel, it is also a direct threat to the region, according to the official. As such, the Iranian threat has created the possibility of enhanced cooperation and dialogue between Israel and its neighbors, “something that ultimately could be very significant in building peace.”

National Security Council head Uzi Arad was reportedly in Egypt earlier in the week preparing for the upcoming meeting.

Meanwhile, neither the Prime Minister’s Office nor the Foreign Ministry had any comment Wednesday on reports in the London-based pan-Arab daily Al-Quds al-Arabi that Arab leaders were formulating a new peace offer, more detailed than the original Arab initiative from 2002, that would include a proposal for resolving the two thorniest final-status issues: Jerusalem and the refugee problem.

According to the report, which relied on Palestinian sources, the new initiative was being led by Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the behest of US President Barack Obama.

The offer would reportedly call for the establishment of a demilitarized Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital and for the Old City to be designated as an “international zone.” The question of borders would be resolved through land swaps.

The report said that some of the descendants of Palestinian refugees from the War of Independence in 1947-49 would be allowed to move to the Palestinian state, while others would be naturalized in their countries of residence throughout the Arab world.

According to the report, the idea of a revised Arab peace plan emerged during Abdullah’s meeting with Obama in Washington last month. The US president reportedly asked the Jordanian monarch to formulate a new offer that would elucidate some of the issues that were vague in the original peace initiative. Immediately upon returning to Amman, Abdullah took off for Riyadh to begin hammering out the new plan with his Saudi counterpart.

According to the paper, Abdullah met with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday and filled him in on the details.

Palestinian sources quoted in the report said Obama had requested that the plan outline a “timetable for normalization and the establishment of diplomatic ties between Israel and the Arab world, which will encourage Israel to employ the necessary means in order to create a demilitarized Palestinian state.”

The revised initiative, the sources said, “will allow the Israeli flag to billow in all the capitals of the Arab world, while the Palestinian flag will be raised in the Arab neighborhoods of east Jerusalem, which will be the capital of the Palestinian state.”

The UN banner will fly over the holy sites of Jerusalem’s Old City, the sources were quoted as saying.

The Palestinian sources said the new initiative conceded that an influx of refugees and their descendants into Israel was broadly perceived as an existential threat to the Jewish state. The refugees “cannot return to the occupied Palestinian territories of 1948,” they said, “for, according to the Americans’ point of view, this would pose a danger to Israel’s future.”

Abdullah, meanwhile, said in Berlin on Wednesday that Israel, Syria, Lebanon and other Arab nations would sit down together to try to resolve the Middle East conflict under a new “combined approach” currently under discussion with the US.

“What we are discussing today is a combined approach of bringing together Arabs, Europeans and the United States as a team to create the circumstances over the next several months that allow Israelis and Palestinians to sit at the table, but also with Lebanese, Syrians and Arab nations,” Abdullah told a news conference.

“So it is a packaged effort that we are going to work on… and I would imagine that the plan will be more articulated by the president of the United States after Prime Minister Netanyahu’s visit to Washington,” he added.

Netanyahu is expected to meet with Obama on May 18, and by the end of the month Obama is also expected to have met separately with Abbas and Mubarak.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu – following a meeting Wednesday night with Quartet envoy Tony Blair – announced the establishment of a ministerial committee, that he will head, to develop the Palestinian economy and improve the quality of life in the PA.

The committee will be made up of Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz, and Silvan Shalom, the minister for regional development and development of the Negev and Galilee.

A statement put out by Netanyahu following the Blair meeting said he will ask Shalom to start a number of economic projects in the near future in Jenin, Jericho and a baptismal site on the Jordan River.

Blair also said on Wednesday that the Obama administration and international negotiators were drafting a new strategy for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and expected to unveil it within six weeks.

He did not provide any further details.

At a meeting later in the day with EU ambassadors in Israel, Blair said the Quartet was not going to unveil any new plan, but was waiting to see how to move the diplomatic process forward after Obama’s meetings with the Middle East leaders later this month.

The Quartet is scheduled to hold its next meeting in June, after Obama’s meetings with Netanyahu, Mubarak and Abbas, although representatives of the Quartet may meet on the sidelines of a discussion scheduled for Monday in the UN Security Council.

Arab diplomats, meanwhile, say the Obama administration is pressing them to amend their 2002 peace initiative to make it more acceptable to Israel. The plan – first proposed by Saudi Arabia – called for a complete withdrawal to the pre-1967 lines, including in east Jerusalem and on the Golan Heights, and a return of Palestinian refugees.

Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, who traditionally takes a very hard line on Israel, rejected that suggestion.

“There is no amendment to this initiative. We have received nothing from the other side… no initiative, no response and no proper talking about peace, so why should we change or amend, and for what reason?” he said.

Egyptian Foreign Ministry spokesman Hossam Zaki also denied the reports, telling The Jerusalem Post, “I don’t know where this idea came from.

As far as Egypt is concerned, the idea does not exist and is not under consideration.”

In a related development, Lieberman arrived in Prague on Wednesday for talks with his outgoing Czech counterpart, Karel Schwarzenberg, whose country presides over the European Union until June 30.

Lieberman, on his first foreign tour since taking office, arrived in the Czech Republic from Italy and France, and is scheduled to go to Berlin on Thursday, before returning home.

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana, with whom Lieberman also met on Wednesday, said the European Union would only make a decision on a frozen plan to upgrade ties with Israel when Jerusalem completed its review regarding peace negotiations with the Palestinians.

During talks with Lieberman in Prague, Solana said that “not much has advanced” and that Israel was well aware of the EU’s stance, which calls for a two-state solution.

“They are in the process of review,” he told reporters. “They have to see how they can make something that is compatible with that.”

JERUSALEM — The Obama administration and international negotiators are drafting a new strategy for Israeli-Palestinian peace talks and expect to unveil it within six weeks, international Mideast envoy Tony Blair said.

The plan – being devised by the U.S. administration but with input from others – should offer renewed hope, the former British prime minister told Palestinian reporters.

“We’re about to get a new framework,” Blair said late Tuesday. “I can only speculate right now about what that framework is going to be. The reason I say people should be more hopeful, is that this is a framework that is being worked on at the highest level in the American administration, (and) in the rest of the international community.”

The Obama administration has promised to work for the establishment of a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

It has portrayed a two-state solution as the only way to solve the Mideast conflict and defined it as a U.S. national interest.

President Barack Obama is holding separate meetings at the White House this month with the Israeli, Palestinian and Egyptian leaders to hear their views.

“The Zionist sun will set as soon as the sun of the Islamist state rises,” Sheikh Kamal Hatib, vice-chairman of the Islamic Movement in Israel’s northern branch, said Friday during an event marking the 61st anniversary of the Nakba – or the “catastrophe” of Israel’s inception and the subsequent displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

Thousands of the Islamic Movement’s supporters gathered at a soccer stadium in the northern Arab-Israeli village of Kfar Kana to take part in the event, entitled “The right to return and the right to remain”.

“Wars and conflicts are not won with F-16 planes and Merkava tanks; they are won with human strength,” Hatib told the rally. “If there will be another Nakba in the future, it will not be our (Palestinian) nation that will suffer from it.”

Muhammad Zedan, chairman of the Higher Arab Monitoring Committee, said in his speech that “this is our land.

We will either live here in bliss or die as shahids (martyrs) on this land. This is what we’ve learned from the little children in Gaza who died as shahids.

“We will not leave this land, and anyone who thinks he can force us to leave – then he is dreaming,” Zedan said.

‘We will not accept monetary compensation’

Islamic Movement Chairman Sheikh Raed Salah expressed hope that next year the Palestinians will mark Nakba Day in “the capital of the Palestinian state – Jerusalem.”

“This year we celebrated during the ‘Jerusalem – capital of Arabic culture for 2009’ events, and we hope that next year we will be celebrating in Jerusalem, the capital of the Palestinian state; our capital,” Salah said.

“We are the ones who will remain on our land; it is the occupation that will soon disappear.”

In his speech, the Islamic Movement head leveled criticism at Pope Benedict XVI, saying that during the pontiff’s recent Mideast visit he should have “apologized to the Muslims for past remarks against the prophet Muhammad,” adding that the pope also failed to address the “Holocaust that was carried out by the Israeli army in Gaza.”

Sheikh Ikrima Sabri, former mufti of Jerusalem, told the rally “we cannot relinquish the right of return (of the Palestinian refuges), and no one can ask this of us. We will not accept monetary compensation. Without the Islamist connection to the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem the Palestinian people would have vanished years ago.”

Thirty years ago, at the end of 1978 and beginning of 1979, US President Jimmy Carter’s blind approach and his obsessive concern for human rights everywhere, and particularly in the Shah-ruled Iran, prompted Khomeini’s rise and brought Khomeinism to power.

Carter did not permit the Shah to handle the protests against him, that is, to disperse them with gunfire. The result was the ayatollah takeover of Iran and the murder of thousands of Shah supporters.

Only an American president who decided to engineer the Arab and Islamic world in line with American standards can fall and make others fall into the trap of historical mistakes that Carter and Bush fell into, each in their own time and style. As a result of their errors, thousands of people in

Despite the reassurances of Shimon Peres and of Foreign Ministry officials, American Middle Eastern policy under President Barack Obama may lead to US-Israeli tensions. However, the policy directions adopted by Washington have significance for American national interests

and the defense of the free world that go far beyond the Washington-Jerusalem bilateral relationship. While as a superpower the US has large margins of error, we have to pray that its learning curve regarding international realities will be short.

Obama’s intention to “engage” countries like Iran and Syria in order to start a “new page” in bilateral relations strikes most Israelis and Mideast Arabs as naïve, as if nice words can change established national interests.

Arabs, as well, as Israel, want to see Iran and its proxies rolled back, not appeased, by Washington.

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s recent statement to the effect that Arab support for Israel’s bid to prevent the nuclearization of Iran requires Israeli flexibility on the Palestinian issue – is similarly worrisome.

It is hard to believe that the State Department does not understand that the moderate Arab states will cooperate to stop Iran from acquiring a nuclear bomb regardless of the Palestinian issue. The Iranian threat dwarfs any potential repercussions of an impasse in the Israeli-Palestinian track. Above all, preventing a nuclear Iran is a paramount American interest. If Washington’s current prism on world affairs obfuscates its strategic judgment, the West is in trouble.

TWO WEEKS AGO we also learned that the White House is trying to make kosher the transfer of funds to a Palestinian government that includes the radical Islamist Hamas.

This is another sign of strategic folly. Hamas, a recognized terrorist organization, is an Iranian proxy with a clear jihadist agenda. Hamas has strong ties to the Islamic opposition in Egypt that wants to replace the pro-Western Mubarak regime. Arab moderate states are alarmed by the resilience of Hamas’s rule in Gaza and the last thing they want is to aid this radical organization. The struggle against Hamas, just as the quest to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear power, serves American interests and those of its allies in the Middle East. It is only marginally related to Israel.

Leaders in the moderate Arab states view Obama’s early initiatives with great apprehension. Israelis are similarly skeptical. According to a poll commissioned last month by the ADL and the BESA Center, only 37 percent of Israelis trust Obama to make the right decisions on the Arab-Israeli conflict, and 63 percent believe that his rapprochement with the Arab and Muslim world will come at Israel’s expense. Japanese citizens expressed similar critical attitudes toward Obama after the timid American response to the North Korean long range missile launch and Pyonyang’s decision to restart its nuclear reactor.

THE REASON for the skepticism is clear. US attempts to endear itself to the Muslim world have failed in past, such as when the US sided with Muslims in Pakistan, Bosnia and Kosovo.

Likewise, attempts to appease Muslim actors such as the Islamic Republic of Iran, Hamas and Hizbullah, project American weakness and are unlikely to be reciprocated with conciliatory policies.

Similarly, negotiations with Syria are not likely to end in a peace treaty.

Damascus is not ready to pay the price: disconnecting from Iran and losing Israel as a convenient enemy with which to prop-up the Alawite regime. Damascus sees a weak America on its way out from Iraq and has no reason to distance itself from Iran, the rising power in the Middle East.

Since 1976, all American attempts to put a wedge between Damascus and Teheran have failed. It is not clear if Obama can offer Bashar Assad more than his predecessors.

In the Middle East, misguided American policies, particularly regarding Iran, may have disastrous consequences such as the fall of Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey into Islamist hands. Under such a scenario, Israel would remain the only country where an American airplane could land safely in the Middle East; this is not a thought that Jerusalem relishes. Israel would much prefer that President Obama get up to speed on Mideast realities as quickly as possible.

When a best selling book was written in the fifties about six emerging European Common Market nations, it began to cause many theologians to rapidly change their minds as to where the antichrist would eventually arise. Prior to that time most had believed he would arise out of the old Seleucid dynasty, which was formed by one of the generals who divided Alexander’s Grecian Empire into four sections.

Many believed the Assyrian, in the fifth chapter of Micah, would be the antichrist, and that he would arise in, and come out of, modern day Syria.

Before the European Common Market theory arose, a majority believed antichrist would come out of the southern half of the old Roman Empire, rather than out of the European northern half. But the great popularity of the aforementioned book ascended to the highest levels of acceptability, and previous beliefs were dwarfed to obscurity. The book indicated that the six original members of the Common Market would soon be joined by four other nations to reach ten, and then be joined by the eleventh horn, who would be the antichrist of Daniel’s fourth beast in chapter seven. However, soon there were ten horns, then eleven, then more, then fifteen, then twenty-five.

But astounding popularity of this book, and the thousands of preachers and other teachers who have taught it, have left a legacy that has made it difficult to convince most they might not be correct in what they have taught, and are still teaching.

I have been concerned, since the book was first published, about the possibility it might cause many to be deceived when he does not arise in Europe, but in Syria. Quite frankly, I watch both Europe and Syria just like a hawk, and, if I do see him rising in Europe, I most assuredly will accept it. I am prepared for both. But many are so convinced he must come out of Europe, I doubt if anything would change their minds.

The ten horns will arise out of “the whole world” of Daniel’s day. But why do they have to be European nations? Were not Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Egypt, northern Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, and northern Sudan part of the old Roman Empire under the Emperor Trajan? And are not these countries the descendants of Ishmael, the first son of Abraham, and Keturah’s six sons by Abraham, and the two sons of Abraham’s nephew Lot, Moab and Ammon by his two daughters? Are not these descendants of Abraham the ones who have hated and battled the sons of Abraham through Israel for many centuries? In any case, since I believe the attack is likely to occur before 2015, I expect to know where he will arise one way or the other in the next few years, that is, if I survive the grave before Jesus returns.

I do not question that Europe will come down as part of the mass of many nations that join antichrist in Jerusalem for the final battle of Armageddon, but I am confident that the initial attack of the tribulation period will be by the antichrist leading Islamic nations against Israel, with Armageddon occurring some three and one-half years later at Christ’s Second Advent.

Rivlin: Make ‘United Jerusalem’ a Reality

(IsraelNN.com) Knesset speaker Reuven Rivlin believes that Israel must take action now in order to make “united Jerusalem” a reality, and not merely a slogan. “The flowery speeches about a complete, united city must not remain empty words,” he warned.

Rivlin spoke Thursday at a celebratory gathering in the “Jerusalem” hall in the Knesset, with city council members who are planning for the upcoming Jerusalem Day festivities. The meeting was also attended by Interior Minister Eli Yishai, Coalition head MK Ze’ev Elkin, and the heads of several Knesset factions.

In order to make Israeli sovereignty in Jerusalem a reality, Israel must invest primarily in Arab neighborhoods in the eastern part of the capital, Rivlin said.

“The city’s unity relies on an understanding THAT WE ARE THE SOVEREIGN POWER, and it is our obligation to provide sufficient infrastructure for every part of the city.

“There is no room for discrimination against any one part of the city in favor of another,” Rivlin added.

Rivlin slammed the presence of Arab “refugee camps” within the municipal borders of Jerusalem. The “camps” — actually neighborhoods with a developed infrastructure — were established by Jordan during that country’s 19-year rule in the eastern part of the city to house Arabs who fled other parts of pre-state Israel.

“There is no place for the continued existence of the refugee camps. At best, they perpetuate a problem, and give credit to the Palestinian claims of a right of return,” he said.

PA Rep Says 2-State Solution Will Kill Israel

(IsraelNN.com) Palestinian Authority representative in Lebanon Abbas Zaki says the two-state solution is his preferred approach, as it will lead to Israel’s collapse.

Speaking with Lebanese ANB Television on May 7, Zaki said that any ceasefire, or hudna, deal with Israel is not desirable. Instead, the long-time PLO member said, “we must go towards the two-state solution, a solution that even [Iranian President Mahmoud] Ahmedinajad supports.”

“In my opinion,” Zaki explained, “with such a solution, Israel will collapse. Because if they get out of Jerusalem, what will be left of all their [the Jews’] talk about the Promised Land and the Chosen Nation? What will be with all the sacrifices they gave and then they are told to leave?”

The two-state solution, supported by the United States and most of the world, calls for a Palestinian Authority state in Judea and Samaria, leaving Israel barely 11 miles wide in some areas.

Zaki said that Jews and Israelis “perceive of Jerusalem as having a spiritual status. They relate to Judea and Samaria as a historic dream. If the Jews leave these places, the Zionist idea will begin to collapse of itself – and then we will move forward.”

The interview was brought to the Western eye by Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI).

Zaki has made similar points before.
