A flurry of reports over the weekend said that the former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, considered a sharp critic of Israel, is to be named to a top intelligence post in the administration of U.S. President Barack Obama.

Chas W. Freeman Jr., who was U.S. ambassador in Riyadh from 1989-1992, is set to be named chairman of the National Intelligence Council, which has a strong influence on the content of the intelligence briefings presented to the President (and puts together the National Intelligence Estimate, or NIE, which in 2007 dissuaded the Bush regime from attacking Iran). The Council chairman is also often called on to give direct briefings to the President.

Typical of Freeman’s viewpoints is a statement he made in a speech before the Washington Institute of Foreign Affairs in 2007, in which he more or less blames international terrorist acts on Israel:

“American identification with Israeli policy has also become total. Those in the region and beyond it who detest Israeli behavior, which is to say almost everyone, now naturally extend their loathing to Americans. This has had the effect of universalizing anti-Americanism, legitimizing radical Islamism, and gaining Iran a foothold among Sunni as well as Shiite Arabs. For its part, Israel no longer even pretends to seek peace with the Palestinians; it strives instead to pacify them. Palestinian retaliation against this policy is as likely to be directed against Israel’s American backers as against Israel itself. Under the circumstances, such retaliation – whatever form it takes – will have the support or at least the sympathy of most people in the region and many outside it. This makes the long-term escalation of terrorism against the United States a certainty, not a matter of conjecture.”

Freeman also is a strong advocate of talking to Hamas, which he says “is the only democratically-elected government in the Arab world.” In his speech, Freeman said that “Hamas is showing that if we offer it nothing but unreasoning hostility and condemnation, it will only stiffen its position and seek allies among our enemies. In both cases, we forfeit our influence for no gain.”

Freeman says that Israel must be pressured to accept the American point of view, which does not coincide with its own.

“We must talk with all parties, whatever we think of them or their means

of struggle. Refusal to reason with those whose actions threaten injury to oneself, one’s friends, and one’s interests is foolish, feckless, and self-defeating. That is why it is past time for an active and honest discussion with both Israel and the government Palestinians have elected, which – in an irony that escapes few abroad – is the only democratically-elected government in the Arab world.”

In another speech Freeman said:

“We destroyed the Iraqi state and catalyzed anarchy, sectarian violence, terrorism, and civil war in that country… Meanwhile, we embraced Israel’s enemies as our own; they responded by equating Americans with Israelis as their enemies. We abandoned the role of Middle East peacemaker to back Israel’s efforts to pacify its captive and increasingly ghettoized Arab populations. We wring our hands while sitting on them as the Jewish state continues to seize ever more Arab land for its colonists. This has convinced most Palestinians that Israel cannot be appeased and is persuading increasing numbers of them that a two-state solution is infeasible. It threatens Israelis with an unwelcome choice between a democratic society and a Jewish identity for their state. Now the United States has brought the Palestinian experience – of humiliation, dislocation, and death – to millions more in Afghanistan and Iraq. Israel and the United States each have our reasons for what we are doing, but no amount of public diplomacy can persuade the victims of our policies that their suffering is justified, or spin away their anger, or assuage their desire for reprisal and revenge.”

WHEN ISRAEL IS SUDDENLY VISIOUSLY ATTACKED IN A SURPRISE LIGHTNING JIHAD BLITZKRIEG FROM ITS NORTH, WHY DOESN’T THE U.S. ATTACK THE ISLAMIC GROUP OF NATIONS THAT ARE ATTACKING HER?

This is a question I have been asked over and over again for a long time. I was asked again on e-mail recently, and this time, rather than answering the query privately, I decided to make it a prophecy update, so that that in future I could just attach this update to any new query and save myself repeating it again.

The one thing that I learned in the National Security Agency which has been, is, and always will be the motivating factor in any decision made by any country, including the United States, may be simply stated in two words: NATIONAL INTEREST. Many will cry out and say, not so, we did it for humanitarian reasons, we did it to secure justice, we did it out of compassion, we did it out of love, we did it because we love freedom, we did it because we are a great nation: and on and on shall come statements from every realm of society, from “bleeding” liberal hearts to the “ hardened�

different reasons as to why this country did something. But the truth of the matter is that, in the end, we always did it for what amounted to NATIONAL INTEREST.

The United States has quick response attack naval and marine forces in position at all times to put down a banana republic type of minor conflict on short notice. But in order to conduct a successful operation again a Jihad the magnitude of the coming attack of many nations against Israel, we would require some time to get enough regular ground troops in place to have a real hope of victory. It took us a very long time to get enough men and equipment into the Middle East to insure success in our victory against Iraq. The Scriptures indicate that 10 Islamic nations will be led by the Antichrist, and that they will quickly take Jerusalem and drive Israel into the Negev. When Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Iran come pouring southward on both sides of the Samarian mountains, and the Palestinians break out in all directions internally from within the enclosed buffer zone, chaos will reign supreme from Dan to Beersheba. There will be so much inner mingling of the attack forces of Israel and those of the enemy with the fleeing civilian population that air strikes would kill as many on one side as the other. Since the U.S. is fully aware of the Israel War Contingency Plan to evacuate as much of the population as possible to the Negev if overrun from the north, it will set in shock and indecision until it is too late to do anything except help to evacuate some of the coastal population from Tel Aviv to Haifa into the Negev, and to air lift supplies into the Negev. The aircraft of the Islamic nations will be under orders not to fire on western power’s aircraft unless fired upon, because the one thing they will not want is for the U.S. to get actively engaged with them in an all out war. Once Israel has evacuated as much of its population into the Negev as possible, and the U.S. sees that the Arabs are not going past Beersheba, we will accept the status quo as best for all. Why? Because it will satisfy our NATIONAL INTEREST! How? Israel will be safe and we will still be able to receive Arab Oil shipments.

An Oft Asked Question!

When Israel is Attacked, What Will the U.S. Do?

I have received this question many times during the last 29 years, and each time I have answered it individually. It requires a great deal of my time to answer the countless questions I receive weekly by e-mail. I have answered this question in several of my Prophecy Updates, but it takes much longer to go back and find them for forwarding to the questioner, than to answer it directly. Since the question has increased in frequency over the last couple of months, I have decided to answer the question in a single Update, namely this one, and then to stick 116C on a board over my computer, so that I can simply forwarded it to all future queries on the subject. I first answered this question in Special Prophecy Update Number 71A, dated June 8, 2002, which may be found in our Prophecy Archives. In Update 116C I will attempt to give a fuller discourse and explanation, but you might be well advised to go back and read 71A.

Point 1 – Both Israel and the United States will be taken completely by surprise through a well-coordinated, lightning, blitzkrieg like, Jihad by 10 Arab nations. This initial attack begins the last 1260 days before the battle of Armageddon. The land Biblically designated as Israel, from Dan to Beersheba, will be taken in a matter of days, except for the coastal strip from Tel Aviv, where 70 percent of the Israeli population resides. The U.S. maintains an attack carrier group in the Mediterranean between Turkey and Egypt 365 days a year. But the suddenness of this attack is going to be accompanied by a brief period of indecision at the command level and, during that period of time, the Arabs and Israeli forces will be so intertwined in actual combat formations that air strikes would likely take out as many Israeli Defense Forces as Islamic military units. The loss of lives by friendly fire would be enormous. Remember, this is going to be an Israeli-Arab conflict. The European Union, Russia, and China do not become involved in the initial attack. They all join in the final battle of Armageddon some three and one-half years later. This is the attack of Revelation 12:6.

Revelation 12:6 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Point 2 – It took the U.S. eight months to get all its forces in place before they felt confident in launching Operation Desert Storm, and five months to get them in place for Operation Iraqi Freedom. We cannot stop such a well-coordinated Jihad on short notice. We know that the Israelis have the most secure war contingency evacuation area in the world. We watched them turn the Negev wilderness into the best camouflaged, and more heavily fortified piece of real estate on this planet, from our many spy satellites launched out of southern California. The awareness that they have a place of safety into which to evacuate, and that the Islamic forces would not dare penetrate south of Beersheba, will cause us to hold off any large scale attack against their enemies, and Israel will remain in the Negev for 1260 days.

Point 3 – At the same time we watched Israel turn the Negev, which is more than one-third of the total land mass of Israel, into a mighty zone of unbelievable military power, the Soviets were doing the same with their spy satellites launched out of their sites south of the White Sea and east of the Aral Sea. By electronic intercept we know they transmitted all this information to the Syrians, who in turn shared it with the more militant Arab nations. There will not be, I repeat, there will not be a nuclear, chemical, or biological attack against Israel. The Arab nations know that Israel has more than 200 Jericho missile silos in the Negev, and more than 300 nuclear, chemical, and biological warheads. They are capable of wiping out most of the Arab population in the Middle East, and all the Islamic leaders are well aware of it. But they also know that Israel will never launch a weapon of mass destruction against them unless they first launch against it. That is the policy of the political and military leaders of Israel, and as a government they will not violate it, even if driven into the Negev.

This next war will be a war similar to the war we witnessed in Operation Iraqi Freedom. In all three previous wars in 1948, 1967, and 1973, they ended abruptly in a truce. This one will end the same, and the truce will hold for 1260 days. The U.S. will agree because Israel will be safe in the Negev. Israel will agree because they will be stunned, and will want to regroup for future actions. The Arabs will agree because they will have what they want, the land from Dan to Beersheba – They have no real interest in the Negev. In fact, as a humanitarian gesture to gain world favor, they will allow Israeli, U.S., British, Canadian, and o ther western nations to use

their transport aircraft to carry the 70 percent of the Israeli population, boxed in the coastal strip from Tel Aviv to Haifa, to a place of safety in the Negev.

Revelation 12:14 – And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent (time = 1 year, times = 2 years, half a time = ½ year)

The western nations will be allowed to airlift supplies to Israel in the Negev as an effort to show what a great humanitarian the Arab leader is, in order to influence world opinion. The word “NATIONS” in verse 5 is the precedent to the word “THEY” in verse 6, and refers to the nations friendly to the woman Israel.

Revelation 12:5,6 – And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all NATIONS with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. [6] And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that THEY should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Point 4 – I don’t believe the U.S. is going to desire to be involved in another expensive Middle East war when Israel is attacked. I believe our economy will pick up as the dust of the current conflict settles, but at some point in time before the conflict, we are headed for a crash. This will cause us to accept the truce offered by the Arabs. In fact, at the time of the attack, all I expect out of us and the European Union is a loud diplomatic protest, and I strongly suspect it is the one found in Ezekiel 38:13. This diplomatic protest is made in response to the antichrist’s initial attack.

Ezekiel 38:13 – Sheba, and Dedan, and the merchants of Tarshish, with all the young lions thereof, shall say unto thee, Art thou come to take a spoil? hast thou gathered thy company to take a prey? to carry away silver and gold, to take away cattle and goods, to take a great spoil?

Historically, the merchants of Tarshish, established a colony named Tartessus in southern Spain, placed trading sites along the coastlines of Europe around the Mediterranean Sea, and eventually had trading posts along the coastlines of most of northern Europe. It is possible that the “merchants of Tarshish” represent Europe. If so, then all of the western world, in particular the United States, may represent “all the young lions thereof,” because we are the offspring, and melting post, of Europe. All of the reference sources I have consulted make Sheba and Dedan the occupants of the land we identify as the Saudi Arabian peninsula today. I have detailed in numerous previous Birth Pangs and Prophecy Updates why I believe Saudi Arabia, the numerous small countries around it, Jordan, and Egypt will be kept in the dark about this Jihad. All that the United States, the Western World, Europe, Egypt, Jordan, and Saudi Arabia will do is issue a “naughty, naughty” diplomatic protest at the time of the attack. You will find all of this in 71A. As to why Jordan, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia will not be among the 10 Arab nation attacking Israel, please consult Prophecy Updates 71 and 72.

Point 5 – I correlate the opening of the sixth sea in revelation, which lists the first earthquake in the book of Revelation, as occurring simultaneous with the antichrist’s attack, and the beginning of the last 1260 days prior to the battle of Armageddon. I believe this correlates with the time that Satan is cast our of heaven, and a large part of the antichrist’s army is swallowed up north of Beersheba in pursuit of Israel fleeing into the Negev. The sudden increase in worldwide earthquake activity will cause such confusion that the antichrist will be able to drive Israel into the Negev with a minimum of outside interference. Please take a look at Birth Pang Number 42, March 29, 2002 in our Birth Pang Archives.

Revelation 6:12 – And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood;

Revelation 12:15,16 – And the serpent cast out of his mouth water as a flood after the woman, that he might cause her to be carried away of the flood. [16] And the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened her mouth, and swallowed up the flood which the dragon cast out of his mouth.

Another question that I have been asked over and over again is this: What are you doing to get ready for this? Are you storing up food and survival supplies? That’s a lot easier to answer!

Matthew 6:31-34 – Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? [32] (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. [33] But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. [34] Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.

Mark 6:50-52 – For they all saw him, and were troubled.

And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. [51] And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. [52] For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

If he could feed about five thousand men with five loaves and two fish, surely he can provide for his churches in the tribulation. I say with Esther, “and if I perish, I perish.” There’s something a lot better on the other side of perishing in Christ’s service.

I do not believe America is going to directly commit ground troops or combatant air support to defend Israel, regardless of who is President, but Obama’s election would make my belief much stronger I am right.

I have taught for more than 30 years the United States will not commit ground support or direct combatant military air support engagement, when Israel is initially attacked by the forces of Islam, nor will Russia and China provide the same kind of support for Islamic forces during the initial attack. The initial attack by Islamic forces will be a success. It will be strictly an Islam versus Jew war, and Israel will be driven into the Negev. Israel will storm back out of the Negev some three and one half years later to drive north and east to claim Abraham’s land grant in Genesis 15:18.

Many of the nations of the earth will provide logistic and humanitarian assistance to one or both sides, depending on their national interests, for three and one half years. The final battle of Armageddon will occur at the end of the three and one half years, and the nations of the known world, (at the time John wrote the Book of Revelation in about 96 A.D.), will join the Islamic nations in a final attempt to destroy the Jews forever. It is at that time the Lord Jesus Christ will return at His Second Advent to destroy the armies of Islam and those nations joined with them, killing most of them by the greatest geological upheaval in the great Jordan Rift Valley the world has known since God placed man on this earth.

Obama and the Jews

Less than two weeks before the critical primary elections in Ohio and Texas, Democratic voters have made it very clear: Barack Hussein Obama is for real.

Leading in the popular votes cast, delegates pledged and total delegates (meaning principally the back-room machers euphemistically referred to as “superdelegates”), Obama has a decent chance to become the 2008 Democratic candidate for President of the United States. Obama has become a rallying point for millions of disgruntled voters who yearn for a new style of politics in the world’s greatest democracy.

Since the Republican race is all but over and Senator John McCain will likely win the nomination of his party in Minneapolis in early September, it is not idle speculation to consider an Obama-McCain contest in the November general election. Such a contest has potentially enormous consequences for Israel and the Jews.

It is no secret that Obama’s candidacy has been supported financially and politically by many prominent members of the American Jewish community. Even previously outspoken Clinton-supporting spokespersons for Democrats Abroad here in Israel have been hedging their bets recently in articles and interviews, suggesting that an Obama Administration would augur well for Israel. Incredibly, citing unenthusiastic, canned pro-Israel campaign statements, these dyed-in-the-wool Democratic sycophants would urge Jewish voters to cast their fate and Israel’s with Obama rather than with the Republican candidate, McCain.

With all due deference to the Obama celebrity supporters like Steven Spielberg and George Soros, can Jews herein Israel and in America and other friends of Israel risk a vote for Obama in November? A quick look at the facts should switch on a big red light in most peoples’ minds.

First and foremost among the considerations that should trouble friends of Israel is the foreign policy team Obama has selected to advise him. The composition of a candidate’s advisory panel is usually a very good indicator of where the candidate will come out on the issues if elected.

This was the test this writer applied to George W. Bush in 2000 at a time when most pundits in Israel and in the Jewish community predicted that his Middle East policy would be a carbon copy of his father’s, meaning trouble for Israel. But Bush, the son, had selected a blue-ribbon team of pragmatic and conservative advisors whose views on the Middle East were markedly pro-Israel and pro-democracy. Subsequently, the W. Bush Era became among the closest allies of Israel in her 60-year history.

The opposite is the case with the Obama team. Headed up by Jimmy Carter’s (“Israel is an apartheid state”) national security advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Obama’s team includes such problematic figures as Anthony Lake, Robert O. Malley and Susan Rice.

One commentator, citing an article by the staunchly left-wing Israeli newspaper, Haaretz, has noted that an Obama presidency including a foreign policy team that included the foregoing and their ideological soul-mates, “would likely have an approach towards Israel radically at odds with those of previous Presidents (both Republican and Democrat)” and is the candidate apt to be “least supportive” of Israel.

Brzezinski has been disseminating vitriol about Israel for three decades and recently publicly defended the Walt-Mearsheimer study which concluded that US policy towards Israel was the result of Jewish pressure and inconsistent with American interests. More recently Brzezinski called for the US to initiate dialogue with Hamas, described Israel’s action in the Second Lebanon War as a killing campaign against civilian hostages and earlier this month made a trip to confer with Syria’s President Assad, ostensibly unbeknownst to the Obama campaign.

Robert O. Malley, another former Carter Administration diplomat and President Clinton’s special advisor on Arab-Israeli affairs, is an unabashed advocate for the Palestinians, co-authoring a spate of anti-Israel propaganda with former Arafat advisor, Hussein Agha, including a tract that blames Israel for the failure of the 2000 Camp David talks and another piece which blames the Bush Administration for continuing Israeli-Palestinian strife.

And then there is Susan Rice, foreign policy advisor to the ill-fated John Kerry presidential campaign in 2004, where she concocted the idea of solving the Middle East problem by appointing none other than Jimmy Carter and James Baker as negotiators, an idea which was later repudiated by her own boss as being unbalanced against Israel. Nor are these the only “bad apples” in Obama’s foreign policy bin…

Another problematic indicator is candidate’s close association with Jeremiah Wright, Jr., pastor of the Trinity United Community Church (a member of the United Church for Christ, which itself has been rebuked for anti-Israel bias), who is well known for his virulent anti-Israel remarks, including a call for a divestment campaign against Israel for the “injustice and the racism under which the Palestinians have lived because of Zionism.”

Nor should bring much solace to Jewish voters and friends of Israel that Reverend Wright counts among his closest friends, the nefarious anti-Semite, Louis Farrakhan for whom Judaism is a “gutter religion” and Jews are “bloodsuckers.” Obama could have picked any one of hundreds of churches in Chicago’s South Side; he picked Jeremiah Wright’s parsonage, which awarded Farrakhan with the Jeremiah Wright Lifetime Achievement Trumpeteer Award in 2007. And Wright’s church is the single largest beneficiary of Obama’s charitable giving. Even Jewish columnist Richard Cohen of the Washington Post felt compelled to ask Obama to clarify his relationship with these anti-Jewish and anti-Israel community leaders, questioning why Obama has stayed steadfast in his allegiance to Pastor Wright over the years.

Obama is only a first-term senator and has therefore only participated in a handful of votes that bear upon Israel and the Middle East. He also has a penchant for missing controversial votes where he would have to put his personal policies in the public record.

However, his public statements on a variety of issues present a number of troubling issues for Jews and friends of Israel. Here are a few samples:

1) Obama openly advocates outreach toward and diplomatic engagement of Iran even though Iran has recently referred to Israel as a “filthy bacteria” and has repeatedly called for the annihilation of the Jewish State, including recent hints that this will be accomplished by a nuclear attack

2) “Nobody has suffered more than the Palestinian people.”

3)”[T]he creation of a wall [referring to Israel’s security fence] dividing the two nations is yet another example of the neglect of this [the Bush] Administration in brokering peace… .”

4)”I am opposed to the cynical attempt by Richard Perle and Paul Wolfowitz and other armchair, weekend warriors in the administration to shove their ideological agenda down our throat.” [note that only Jews are singled out despite the fact that the policies in question were promoted by the entire Administration]

5)”Reverend [Al] Sh arpton is

a voice for the voiceless, and a voice for the dispossessed. What [Reverend Sharpton’s] National Action Network has done is so important to change America, and it must be changed from the bottom up.” [National Action lead a protest against the Jewish owner of Freddy’s Fashion Mart in New York in which picketers, sometimes joined by Sharpton himself, repeatedly screamed epithets about “bloodsucking Jews” and “Jew bastards.”]

Obama was the only Democratic candidate who said the onus was on Israel to change its policies vis-à-vis the Palestinians in order to achieve peace.

Barack’s problematic and unrecanted public statements and associations raise enough serious questions that should cause Jewish voters and friends of Israel to think twice about supporting him in November.

But there is one other troublesome factor that voters in the Democratic primaries have thus far failed to credit seriously, viz.: Obama aspires to become president of the greatest democracy and still the only remaining superpower on the planet, having held a senate seat for less than five years and having had no previous administrative or national experience.

While it may have suited Democratic voters to cast their votes for Obama during the primaries as a protest against the Democratic political establishment (much as they did in 2006 to deny (now Independent) Senator Joseph Lieberman the nomination of his party for the Senate seat from Connecticut), one would like to think that the American electorate will again demonstrate its maturity and seriousness during the General Elections in November 2008, when their votes really count.

The Presidency in this day and age is no place for a neophyte, however charismatic. Those of us Americans who live in the Jewish State clearly understand what is at stake and what kind of risk Obama poses to the region and the world. I was in favor of invading Iraq and taking it over only long enough to get rid of Saddam Hussein one way or another, and then pulling out to let the Kurds, Sunni, and Shiites slug it out for control. I was in favor of going into Afghanistan, helping the non-Taliban factions unite to defeat the Taliban, and then staying long enough for them to be able to keep the Taliban from taking over the country again.

How long that will take is the question Obama will have to decide.

I have believed since I was in my twenties what General Douglas Macarthur stated concerning military activity on the Asian mainland. He did not believe it possible to sustain a permanent victory on the Asian mainland.

But this was not the primary reason for what I favored in the preceding paragraph.

I must confess my main reason for my viewpoint was that prophetic interpretation of end time Scriptures had convinced me Afghanistan and Pakistan would fall in line with the Antichrist following Jerusalem’s fall, and become part of his Caliphate, which I have outlined in numerous previous Blogs.

Obama and the AFPAK Trap

istan and Pakistan. In a word, he will have no option but to withdraw from Afghanistan – and the sooner the better, says Patrick Seale.

One of the most difficult foreign policy questions facing US President Barack Obama is what strategy to pursue in Afghanistan and Pakistan — or AFPAK, as Washington now calls this war-torn region.

During his election campaign, Obama adopted a hard line against the Taliban and Al-Qaida, no doubt wishing to show that on matters of national security he was as tough as anyone. He spoke of shifting America’s military effort away from Iraq to Afghanistan, which he described in harsh terms as the “central front against terrorism.” This bellicosity suggested that he was in danger of falling into an AFPAK trap.

He still is in such danger, although a somewhat softer tone is now being heard from parts of the new American administration.

Obama is under pressure to announce his strategic guidelines in the coming weeks, possibly even before the NATO Summit of 3-4 April.

He is clearly not allowing himself to be rushed. Instead, he is sounding out a wide range of advisers.

AFPAK is the subject of intense debate in Washington, both in government agencies and in allied think-tanks, like the Center for New American Security — a rival to the neo-conservative think-tanks, which were so dangerously influential during the Bush era.

Obama has a wide range of advisers working on the AFPAK puzzle: Richard Holbrooke, 67, his ‘special representative’ to Afghanistan and Pakistan, has a reputation as a robust negotiator and is something of a hawk. He has just completed a 10-day tour of both countries, and is busy preparing his strategic plan.

But so are Admiral Mike Mullen, chairman of the chiefs of staff; General David Petraeus, the CENTCOM commander; General David McKiernan, the top US commander in Afghanistan; Dennis Blair, director of National Intelligence; and Bruce Riedel, a former CIA counter-terrorism and Afghan expert; to name only some of the more prominent.

All these advisers are due to submit their reports to the President in the coming weeks. All recognise that the situation is grim: The governments of Afghan President Hamid Karzai and of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari are weak and ineffective. Their writ does not run far beyond their capital cities. The Taliban, meanwhile, mount increasingly daring raids in the south, east and north of Afghanistan, and clearly enjoy rising public support. In both Afghanistan and Pakistan, opposition to US and other foreign troops is growing sharply, largely as a result of civilian casualties caused by air and missile strikes.

Winter is drawing to a close in the Afghan mountains. With the approach of spring, the Taliban/Pashtun insurgency is bound to intensify. Tribal insurgents have already more or less obliterated the border between the Afghanistan and Pakistan — the famous, British-drawn Durand Line — and are extending their control to large parts of both countries.

Kabul itself is now unsafe.

This month, Taliban suicide bombers attacked government buildings in the heart of the city, killing 26 people and spreading panic in the expatriate community. Three of the four highways into the city are under regular Taliban harassment. It is feared that Afghan presidential elections, due on 20 August, may not be able to be held, such is the widespread insecurity. Military supply routes into Afghanistan are under threat. Some Western commentators go so far as to say that the war is already lost.

General McKiernan asked for an extra 30,000 men, no doubt hoping that an Iraqi-style ‘surge’ could be replicated in Afghanistan. But it has been widely noticed that Obama is taking his time. He has not yet agreed to send large numbers of troops to Afghanistan. McKiernan may have to make do with little more than half that number.

The suggestion is that Obama shares the view of Defence Secretary Robert Gates that there is no military solution to the complex problems of Afghanistan and Pakistan, where insurgents thrive in tribal areas largely outside government control.

According to Washington sources, Obama’s instinct is to declare an end to George W Bush’s ‘Global War on Terror’. He would rather engage in a dialogue with America’s enemies — in Iran as much as in Afghanistan — rather than seek to subdue them by military force, which in Afghanistan is a seemingly hopeless task. There is much talk in Washington of attempting to separate ‘moderate’ Taliban from Al-Qaida. Certainly, the Taliban movement is heavily fractured, with more than a dozen commanders each running a district of their own.

But because they feel the war is going their way, none of these commanders is in a hurry to talk to America. The only subject they would like to discuss is a Western withdrawal.

Perhaps because of his childhood in Indonesia and his mixed-race background, Obama may be better prepared to understand how fervently the Pashtun tribes are attached to their independence, to their Muslim faith and to their tribal traditions. If there is to be reconciliation, let alone peace, these must be respected. It would be wiser to put the focus on reconstruction and institution-building rather than on combat operations.

Some, at least, of Obama’s advisers will tell him that, to win hearts and minds, the population in the war zone will need to be protected, rather than attacked and killed in large numbers by missile strikes from CIA drones — as is, unfortunately, still happening.

In a word, the United States and its allies will have no option but to withdraw from Afghanistan. They should look for an exit strategy — and the sooner the better.

REVELATION 12:5 – And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne.

He was rejected as ruler over his chosen people, but now he waits in heaven to return as the Lion of Judah, who has all power in

[14] For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.

Matthew 28:18 – And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

REVELATION 12:5,6 – And she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron: and her child was caught up unto God, and to his throne. [6] And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

The woman is Israel and the wilderness is the Negev of Israel. I will not spend any time elaborating on this verse.

Prophecy Updates 5 through 11, found in our Prophecy Archives, contain more information on this verse than you could ever use in expositing on it.

REVELATION 12:7,8 – And there was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, [8] And prevailed not; neither was their place found any more in heaven.

Revelation 12:4 indicated that when Lucifer left Heaven he took about one-third of the angelic host with him.

However, the book of Job clearly indicates that Satan still has access to God’s presence in heaven at God’s invitation.

Job 1:6,7 – Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. [7] And the Lord said unto Satan, Whence comest thou? Then Satan answered the Lord, and said, From go ing to and fro

in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

While it is true that Satan’s appearances, in the Heaven where God the Father dwells, are rather rare, it is evident that he has never been completely cut off from access to Him. And here, in Revelation 12:7, we are advised that a great spiritual battle will occur in Heaven between Michael and his angels and Satan and his angels. In verse eight we are advised that Satan’s spiritual army loses. Furthermore, verse eight also tells us that Satan and his hoard will never again be allowed in the Heaven where God dwells. This great spiritual battle is still future, but will be occurring after Israel flees into the Negev wilderness. It will end with Satan being cast permanently out of heaven.

REVELATION 12:9 – And the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

This confining of Satan to the earth will mark the point in time that Satan enters the body of the man of sin (anti-Christ), and thereafter dwells on the earth as Satan incarnate for the rest of the Tribulati

on Period.

REVELATION 12:10 – And I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, Now is come salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of his Christ: for the accuser of our brethren is cast down, which accused them before our God day and night.

At this point in time the rapture of the saved will be drawing near, and Revelation 12:11 informs us as to how those who are to be taken will be selected by God.

REVELATION 12:11 – And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb, and by the word of their testimony; and they loved not their lives unto the death.

Those taken at the rapture did not overcome the Devil by baptism, by works, tradition, or any other humanistic endeavor. They “overcame him by the blood of the Lamb.” It is our faith that His sacrifice of His body, and of His blood, for our sins was more than enough to save us from what we are by birth and by our inherited nature, sinners separated from God, who must have a savior. We are born-again by belief in His Word that the Overcomer, Jesus Christ, will make his abode in us to live His life in us. His life lived in us is what makes us able to overcome.

REVELATION 12:12 – Therefore rejoice, ye heavens, and ye that dwell in them.

Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and of the sea! for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath, because he knoweth that he hath but a short time.

I must confess that, since large segments of the this 12th chapter are parenthetical to the entire book, this may be associated with the three woes that begin with the blowing of the fifth trumpet, and end with the blowing of the seventh trumpet. It may be that the wrath of the devil is poured out on man during this period, while God’s wrath is associated with the seven vials of wrath that follow.

Revelation 8:13 to 9:2 – And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound! [1] And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

[2] And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

Revelation 16:1 – And I heard a great voice out of the temple saying to the seven angels, Go your ways, and pour out the vials of the wrath of God upon the earth.

While rejoicing is going on in heaven, because of the permanent removal of the devil, three great woes are being experienced by “the inhabitants of the earth” due to his presence among them. The devil pours out his wrath at an accelerated rate because he knows he only has a short time to vent his anger.

Revelation 12:13 returns us to be troubles of a small section of mankind – the surviving one-third of

the nation of Israel trapped in the Negev wilderness.

REVELATION 12:13 – And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child.

The woman is what remains of Israel after the attack that drove her into the Negev and conquered Jerusalem. If the attack were to occur in the next three years, it would amount to some 1.9 to 2 million Israelis.

Zechariah 13:8 to 14:2 – And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. [9] And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

[1] Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

[2] For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

PA official: US has given green light for Hamas-Fatah talks

The new US Administration has given the Palestinian Authority a “green light” to talk to Hamas about the possibility of forming a Palestinian unity government, a PA official in Ramallah said over the weekend.

The official said that Washington has also given Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak the go-ahead to resume his efforts to achieve reconciliation between Hamas and Fatah.

“The new administration has a different policy than that of [former US President] George W. Bush,” the official told The Jerusalem Post. “The administration of President Barack Obama believes that a Hamas-Fatah government is good for stability.”

The Egyptians have issued invitations to representatives of Hamas, Fatah and several other Palestinian groups to attend reconciliation talks that are due to begin in Cairo on February 25.

Fatah and Hamas officials confirmed that the Egyptians had invited them to the talks.

Hamas spokesman Mushir al-Masri said that in order for the talks to succeed, the PA must first release all “political prisoners” it is holding in its West Bank jails.

An attempt by the Egyptians to hold a similar conference last November failed because of Abbas’s refusal to free hundreds of Hamas prisoners and detainees ahead of the talks.

The talks were originally set for February 22. But the Egyptians announced last week that they were postponing the intra-Palestinian talks following the failure of negotiations with Hamas and Israel over reaching a new cease-fire agreement in the Gaza Strip.

PA President Mahmoud Abbas, who visited Cairo last week, reportedly told Mubarak that he’s prepared to patch up his differences with Hamas. Abbas, according one of his aides, urged the Egyptian president to set a new date for convening the Palestinian “national reconciliation” talks in Cairo.

At the talks, Hamas and Fatah are expected to form five joint committees to discuss ways of resolving their differences over a variety of issues such as control over the border crossings into the Gaza Strip, reconstructing the PA security forces and forming a new unity government.

Ahead of the pl anned parley, Hamas

and Fatah representatives met in Cairo and Ramallah over the past two weeks in an attempt to reach agreement on the agenda of the talks.

Fatah legislator Azam al-Ahmed, who has been participating in the talks with Hamas, said that the results of the last Israeli general elections, which saw the rise of right-wing parties, required the Palestinians to unite “in the face of the new challenges.” He also expressed optimism regarding the prospects of ending the Hamas-Fatah power struggle.

Another Fatah operative, Ibrahim Abu al-Naja, said the fact that Likud chairman Binyamin Netanyahu has been tasked with forming a new government “proves that the Israeli public opinion favors war and destruction.”

He said that in the wake of the “dangerous developments in Israel, the Palestinians must unite their ranks by forming a unity government.”

Meanwhile, Hamas leaders said over the weekend that US Democratic Senator John Kerry’s visit to the Gaza Strip last Thursday signals a change in US policy toward their movement.

“The visit is a move in the right direction,” said Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhoum. “We consider the visit as an indirect step aimed at ending the boycott of Hamas by the Americans and the international community.”

Welcoming the apparent shift in US policy, the Hamas spokesman expressed hope that the Obama Administration would “repair” the damage and injustice done to Hamas after it won the January 2006 election when the previous administration decided

to boycott and impose sanctions on it.

However, he voiced disappointment over the fact that Kerry did not meet during his tour of the Gaza Strip with “representatives of the democratically-elected government headed by Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh.”

Egyptian Cleric Zaghloul Al-Naggar: The Arab World Is Ruled By the Scum of the Earth and the Garbage of All Nations; I Am ‘Absolutely’ Calling to Wage Jihad Against the Jews, Who Are Devils in Human Form

“The West Wanted To Avenge Its Defeat In The Crusades, So It Gathered These Dispersed [Jewish] Communities… And Planted Them In The Heart Of The Arab World”

Zaghloul Al-Naggar: “I have written about the conspiracy against the Palestinian people, and about how this abominable conspiracy was hatched by Britain and France, in collaboration with several Western countries. In our days, this conspiracy has been adopted by the U.S.

“This conspiracy has many causes. The West wanted to avenge its defeat in the Crusades, so it gathered these dispersed [Jewish] communities – the scum of the earth and garbage of the nations – and planted them in the heart of the Arab world, thus saying to us: ‘We’ve returned, after you drove us out of this blessed land.’

“The Jews used to live a life of squalor and humiliation, and were fought and persecuted in Europe and the whole world. I lived in Britain from the early 1960s, and many stores and restaurants still had a ‘no dogs, no Jews’ sign. The Jews wanted to escape the humiliation imposed on them by the West, and to shift it to the Arab nation. In this case, two goals coincided: The Jews’ goal was to have a state, which would protect them from their humiliation all over the world, and the goal of the West was to avenge its defeat in the Crusades, by returning to the region.

“This conspiracy began in the 17th century CE, when the Jews convinced the British to form the Zionist-Crusader Committee. This committee devised the general outlines of the conspiracy. Later, Europe, because of its hatred for the Islamic Caliphate, launched a fierce war of attrition against the Islamic countries, and the Caliphate eventually collapsed.

“In the tenth century CE, there was a kingdom called the Khazar kingdom, near the Caspian Sea, which was called the Khazar Sea back then. This kingdom was ruled by a tyrannical dictator, who fabricated lies about his neighbors, just as Israel does today.

Throughout history, the Jews have excelled at getting close to rulers.

They got close to Bulan, the king of the Khazars, and convinced him to convert to Judaism. King Bulan converted, and made Judaism the religion of

the Khazar kingdom. Most of the people who belong to Judaism today are of Khazar origin. They come from Mongol Tatar races, which have nothing to do with the Arab region, or with Jacob, Abraham, and Moses. Therefore, the Jewish claim to a right to this land is totally groundless.”

I Am ‘Absolutely’ Calling To Wage Jihad Against the Jews

“The Jews have never been faithful to agreements.”

Interviewer: “Right.”

Zaghloul Al-Naggar: “That is how they are described in the Koran. They are not faithful to treaties or agreements. They depend upon American and Western aid. We – the Arab states, governments, and officials – made a huge mistake in dealing with this as a political issue, when it is, in fact, a religious issue.”

Interviewer: “An issue of faith.”

Zaghloul Al-Naggar: “The Prophet Muhammad said: ‘If [the enemy] treads upon even an inch of Muslim land, Jihad becomes a duty, and a child should set out on Jihad even without his parents’ permission, a wife without her husband’s permission, and a slave without his master’s permission.'”

Interviewer: “So are you calling to wage Jihad?”

Zaghloul Al-Naggar: “Absolutely. There is no solution…”

Interviewer: “But who has the right to declare Jihad?”

Zaghloul Al-Naggar: “Let me be clear. Jihad is the only way to resolve this issue. With the Jews, one cannot achieve anything by means of peace, or a settlement, or open borders, or diplomatic and commercial ties. They are devils in human form.

Many people think that Judaism is a religion, but today’s Jews are not really Jews, and have nothing to do with Moses and the Torah. They are a gang of evil thieves who stole this land. By nature, a thief who knows he has no right to the land imposes his presence by means of force, by bloodshed, by excessive massacres, by excessive killings, and by destruction, in order to prove that he has rights in this region.”

Interviewer: “True.”

Zaghloul Al-Naggar: “This is the nature of thieves.”

Interviewer: “Right.”

Zaghloul Al-Naggar: “It is inconceivable that we deal with this band of thieves as a state. We made a big mistake by treating them as a state.

This is not a state. These are gangs of evil thieves and murderers…”

“The Arab World is Ruled by the Scum of the Earth and the Garbage Of All Nations… Not a Single Arab Leader Understands or Implements Islam”

Interviewer: “Yes.”

Zaghloul Al-Naggar: “There is not a single Arab leader who understands or implements Islam

“By occupying the Arab and Islamic countries, the Western world has managed to exclude Islam completely from the decision-making. All kinds of impure scoundrels seized power. The Arab world is ruled by the scum of the earth and the garbage of all nations.

We pray that Allah will guide them.

Either that, or that He would relieve us of them all.”

Interviewer: “Yes.”

Zaghloul Al-Naggar: “There is not a single Arab leader who understands or implements Islam.

“I blame the Islamic countries as well, not just the Arab

countries. I say to Iran: Where are your missile

s? You raise the banner of Islam, but where are your missiles? Where are all the soldiers you parade in military marches? I say to Hizbullah: Where are your missiles? When will you use them, if not now? I say to Syria, part of whose land has been occupied for over 30 years: Where is your army? Where are your missiles?”
