The Biden prophecy has come to pass. Our wacky veep, momentarily inspired, had predicted last October that “it will not be six months before the world tests Barack Obama.” Biden probably had in mind an eve-of-the-apocalypse drama like the Cuban Missile Crisis. Instead, Obama’s challenges have come in smaller bites.

Some are deliberate threats to US interests, others mere probes to ascertain whether the new president has any spine.

Preliminary X-rays are not very encouraging.

Consider the long list of brazen Russian provocations:

(a) Pressuring Kyrgyzstan to shut down the US air base in Manas, an absolutely crucial NATO conduit into Afghanistan.

(b) Announcing the formation of a “rapid reaction force” with six former Soviet republics, a regional Russian-led strike force meant to reassert Russian hegemony in the Muslim belt north of Afghanistan.

(c) Planning to establish a Black Sea naval base in Georgia’s breakaway province of Abkhazia, conquered by Moscow last summer.

(d) Declaring Russia’s intention to deploy offensive Iskander missiles in Kaliningrad if Poland and the Czech Republic go ahead with plans to station an American (anti-Iranian) missile defense system.

President Bush’s response to the Kaliningrad deployment – the threat was issued the day after Obama’s election – was firm. He refused to back down because giving in to Russian threats would leave Poles and Czechs exposed and show the world that, contrary to post-Cold War assumptions, the US could not be trusted to protect Eastern Europe from Russian

bullying.

The Obama response? “Biden Signals US Is Open to Russia Missile Deal,” as The New York Times headlined Biden’s February 7 Munich speech to a major international gathering. This followed strong messages from the Obama transition team even before the inauguration that Obama was not committed to the missile shield. And just to make sure everyone understood that the Bush policy no longer held, Biden in Munich said the US wanted to “press the reset button” on NATO-Russian relations.

Not surprisingly, the Obama wobble elicited a favorable reaction from Russia. (There are conflicting reports that Russia might suspend the Kaliningrad blackmail deployment.) The Kremlin must have been equally impressed that the other provocations – Abkhazia, Kyrgyzstan, the rapid reaction force – elicited barely a peep from Washington.

IRAN HAS been similarly charmed by Obama’s overtures. A week after the new president went about sending sweet peace signals via al-Arabiya, Iran launched its first homemade Earth satellite. The message is clear. If you can put a satellite into orbit, you can hit any continent with a missile, North America included.

And for emphasis, after the roundhouse hook, came the poke in the eye.

A US women’s badminton team had been invited to Iran. Here was a chance for “Ping-Pong diplomacy” with the accommodating new president, a sporting venture meant to suggest the possibility of warmer relations.

On February 4, Teheran denied the team entry into Iran.

Then, just in case Obama failed to get the message, Iran’s parliament speaker rose in Munich to offer his response to Obama’s olive branch.

Executive summary: Thank you very much. After you acknowledge 60 years of crimes against us, change not just your tone but your policies and abandon the Zionist criminal entity, we might deign to talk to you.

WITH A grinning Goliath staggering about sporting a “kick me” sign on his back, even reputed allies joined the fun.

These Pakistani capitulations may account for Obama’s hastily announced 17,000 troop increase in Afghanistan even before his various heralded reviews of the mission have been completed. Hasty, unexplained, but at least something.

Other than that, a month of pummeling has been met with utter passivity.

I would like to think the supine posture is attributable to a rookie leader otherwise preoccupied (i.e. domestically), leading a foreign policy team as yet unorganized if not disoriented.

But when the State Department says that Hugo Chavez’s president-for-life referendum, which was preceded by a sham government-controlled campaign featuring the tear-gassing of the opposition, was “for the most part… a process that was fully consistent with democratic process,” you have to wonder if Month One is not a harbinger of things to come.

Netanya to Tiberias – Normal Second Day of Tours

Netanya is a city in the Centre District of Israel and is the capital of the Sharon plain.

It is located between the ‘Poleg’ stream and Wingate Institute in the south and the ‘Avichail’ stream in the north.

Its 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) of beaches have made the city a very popular tourist resort. Today the city houses a notably large population of English-speaking immigrants from the United Kingdom, USA, and Canada. According to the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS), at the end of 2007 the city had a total population of 176,500. The city mayor is Miriam Feirberg. The city is expected to reach a population of 350,000 by 2020. The city name has sometimes been spelled Nathania.

The idea to create the settlement of Netanya was drawn up at a meeting of the Bnei Binyamin association in Zikhron Ya’aqov. The location was decided upon near the ancient site of Poleg and it was decided for it to be named for the Jewish American philanthropist Nathan Straus who devoted much money to activities in Israel. In 1928, members of Bnei Binyamin and Hanote, an organisation set up after Strauss was informed of the establishment of the settlement, are said to have purchased 350 acres (1.4 km2) of Umm Khaled lands.

There remains today, however, considerable controversy amongst Palestinian and Israeli interpretation about whether land was sold (primarily from non-resident Arab land holders) during the British Mandate.

Made vulnerable by its proximity (14 km, 9 mi) to the Palestinian city of Tulkarm, Netanya has suffered from numerous Palestinian attacks aimed at Israel, including, notably, an attack in March 2002 which has come to be known as the Passover Massacre. Since 2004 and the construction of Israeli West Bank barrier number of attacks decreased significantly in Netanya as in Jerusalem, Afula, Tel-Aviv and other major cities.

From Natanya to Caesarea you will travel north along the track the massive Islamic Jihad assault will be moving south from Lebanon along the bases of the high bluffs you will be seeing to your right. As the northern prong from Lebanon is pushing south along the base of the Samarian Mountain Bluffs, the Palestinians will be launching thousand of smuggled and homemade rockets and missiles, as well as thousands of mortars, over the heads of their comrades in the foothills below, and all these projectiles will be headed for all the Israeli coastal cities from Haifa to Tel Aviv, where 70 percent of the total Jewish population is located. The Antichrist will have absolutely no desire to see the United States involved in this war in face to face combat, so he will allow the United States to airlift the Israeli into the Negev without attacking their aircraft, and te forces of Islam will occupy the coastal plains.

I have told people for 35 years that the U.S. would not fight the Antichrist in a ground war in Israel, and I am more convinced of it now than ever before.

I could care less what Obama says, wait and see what he does!

We will see the Roman Aqueduct which carried water from springs in the hills to the Capital city of Caesarea. There is a minor underwater fault off the shoreline just south of the end of the aqueduct, which may have produced an earthquake at one time to cause the collapse of the aqueduct from there into Caesarea.

We will turn northeast from the coastal road near Caesarea toward Tiberias. As we turn if you look northwest out over the Mediterranean you will be gazing over a vast new gas field discovered under the Sea off the shore of Israel.

Offshore gas field near Israel larger than first reports

Israel National News:

A massive natural gas find off the coast of Haifa which was lauded as capable of fueling all of Israel for 15 years is actually more than 60 percent larger than originally estimated, according to the American partner in the drill, Noble Energy Inc.

Israeli companies Isramco Negev 2, Delek Drilling, Avner Oil Exploration, and Dor Gas Exploration had the majority of the stake on the dig – named Tamar-1 – which is estimated at a potential of 5 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. That estimate is up from January, at which time the partners believed the well contained 3 million cubic feet of gas.

The team will keep their drilling rig in the area for two more wells they believe may be present as well.

Isramco shares, which have skyrocketed 736 percent since the start of the year, were 7.2 percent higher on Wednesday morning compared with declines of over 2 percent in the broader market.

Delek Drilling is up 6.4 percent as of Wednesday morning, with Avner up 4.8 percent. Conglomerate Delek Group (DELKG.TA), the parent of Delek Drilling and Avner, is up 5.9 percent.

Meanwhile the Obama administration continues to throw obstacles in the way of such production off the US mainland by extending a 30 year comment period for another six months, because the anti energy groups that support Obama need more time

to find excuses not to produce domestic energy or have our governments receive over a trillion dollars worth of royalties. And this does not even consider all the jobs that would be created by the exploration and production effort. These are evident jobs the Democrats have no interest in.

My area of expertise lies in the geology of Israel as it relates to prophecy in the Bible. When we arrive at Tel Megiddo you will move about the ancient site associated with the final Revelation battle of Armageddon after you have seen a model of it. It is one of the most important archaeological mounds in Israel. Tel Megiddo contains the remains of historic Megiddo, a fortified city that sat strategically on the ancient trunk road from Egypt to Syria and Mesopotamia. Megiddo has served as an important junction and battlefield throughout history. It is mentioned in an Egyptian document over 3,500 years old, was one of the chariot cities of Kings Solomon and Ahab, and was the site where Josiah, King of Judah, fell in battle. In 1918 the British defeated the Turks here and in 1948, during the War of Independence, the Israelis overcame invading Arabs forces at nearby Mishmar Haemek.

In the New Testament book of Revelation, Megiddo is identified as the site of the last great battle of the world, Armeggadon, a corruption of the Hebrew Har Megiddo. Excavations have uncovered the ruins of 25 cities dating from 4,000 to 400 B.C.E. Ruined structures, now visible, belong to the fortified “chariot city,” built by King Solomon in the 10th century B.C.E. An ancient water system, dating from the 9th sentury B.C.E., is well preserved and a remarkable piece of engineering. It consists of a large shaft, sunk 120 feet through rock, meeting a tunnel cut more than 200 feet to a spring outside the city.

The spring was hidden by a wall and camouflaged by a covering of earth.

From the Tel of Megiddo one can look north across the wide plain frequently called Ha Emeg (“the valley’) for short. It extends from the bay north of Haifa southeast to the Jordan Valley and separates the hills of Samaria and Galilee. The Bible refers to as “the Esdrelon Plain.” Many refer to it as the Jezreel Plain, particularly in its southernmost portion where it enters the Jordan. There is a deep geological fault in the center of the valley that extends northwest to southeast down the length of the entire valley. It will be a great earthquake during the Tribulation Period along this fault that destroys a large segment of the Antichrist’s army. It is the only geological fault in Israel that extends off the great Jordan Valley Rift fault, which extends all the way to the Mediterranean Sea. You can look across the valley and see Nazareth and Mount Tabor. We will travel over the fault as we pass across the valley on our way to Nazareth. After leaving Nazareth we will head northeast to Tiberias. We will descend rapidly as we head down into the Deep Rift Valley of the Jordan just before we reach Tiberias. We will pass over the rift fault as we descend.

Headlines across the world in various World News sources on Monday were filled with what has become a profane abandonment of defending Israel and switching the sympathies of all the nations toward a group of religious people who represent the spirit of Antichrist.

I am well aware that Obama spoke out both sides of his mouth in his determination to continue our policy of defending Israel, but there was a trickle of a change the first week he took office, and it will eventually be a flood. This was supposed to be in the last days among the Gentile nations and it will get much worse. Israel will have the screws tightened on her even more by what was

once her greatest ally.

I have only included three of the anti-Israel headlines, which follow, but it has been evident in headlines for the last two years that this negative sentiment toward Israel will continue to worsen until the Second Advent, while the positive compassionate attitude toward the Palestinians

accelerates.

Those who deserted Israel in her great hour of need will pay a price for it when Jesus comes at his Second Advent.

There is great danger in the gap between Israeli extremism and the more accommodating realism and pragmatism of everyone else in the Middle East — including an America that seems slowly to be coming to its senses again, warns Rami G.

BEIRUT – When you get off a train in many countries, a sign tells you to “mind the gap” between the platform and the train car door.

We need a sign like that over the entire Middle East, which witnesses the dangerous trend of the growing gap between an increasingly extremist Israel and the more pragmatic Arabs, Iranians, Americans, and Europeans.

A flurry of recent developments — statements, gestures, hints, trips — suggests that the United States, Iran, the Arab states and some Europeans seem interested in exploring reconciliatory moves and are beginning to make noises to that effect:

• American members of Congress visit Syria and Gaza;

• the Iranian and American presidents allude to resuming talks and normal relations;

• the Syrian president stresses the centrality of the United States for peace talks in the Middle East and welcomes a visit by head of US Central Command General David Petraeus to discuss Iraq;

• Italy ponders inviting Iran to the next G-8 meeting;

• and assorted European legislators hold quiet talks with Hamas,

• whose leaders just sent a letter to President Barack Obama.

The common denominator is that key parties that had been estranged now seek to resume normal contacts. This is a critical first step towards sensible behavior, and then, perhaps, peace and security for all. The critical element that could lead to breakthroughs on several fronts is that all of these players have something to gain and something to lose, and they are not comfortable with the status quo — that is, they are willing and able to negotiate, and are well placed to make a deal.

A deal is in everyone’s interest, which is why I suspect we may soon see senior American diplomats meeting more regularly with Syrians and Iranians. If that happens, Hamas and Hizbullah will both find that they will have to adjust to new realities.

They will probably do so quickly, because they too are reality-based players who cannot afford to be left out in the cold waving the banner of eternal resistance to a shrinking constituency — while everyone else around them is busy negotiating deals on coexistence, acceptable accommodation, and mutual rights.

The important element in the current trend is the clarification that the root causes of tensions between the United States and Europe, on the one hand, and assorted Arabs, Iranian and, occasionally, Turkish parties are political — not religious, cultural or civilizational.

Political problems — including occupied lands or nuclear power — have political solutions.

Israel, on the other hand, seems to be moving in a direction in which it will take off the table the items that could prompt political negotiations and lead to peaceful coexistence.

The rightwing majority in the new parliament — with a sprinkling of Zionist fascists, some of whom might be in a new government — now explicitly rejects serious peace negotiations with the Palestinians, in favor of only “improving economic conditions” for the Palestinians.

Israelis will deal to get back the soldier Gilead Shalit who is in Hamas’ hands, and might agree to a medium-term truce with Hamas, but otherwise the majority of Israelis and their members of parliament seem uninterested in a serious peace negotiation that requires Israel to make major concessions that would see the Jewish state comply with international law. What a supreme irony this is, in view of the fact that the Jewish people, in the accepted biblical narrative, were the chosen instrument through which God passed on a set of laws to humankind to guide ethical and peace-seeking behavior,

through the great law-giver Moses.

The likely Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, speaks only of improving economic conditions for Palestinians, rather than negotiating Israeli withdrawal and an end of Jewish colonization, or achieving Palestinian statehood and an end to refugeehood. While everyone else in the region explores how to achieve mutually agreed equal rights, negotiated through mechanisms that affirm their common dignity and sovereignty, the Israeli public and political establishment both are moving in the opposite direction towards an almost pathological addiction to militarism, colonialism, and racism against Palestinians that is now ratified by the voting public.

There is great danger in the gap between Israeli extremism and the more accommodating realism and pragmatism of everyone else in the Middle East — including an America that seems slowly to be coming to its senses again.

Historically, the US government in such situations was the only external party with enough leverage with Israel to craft a diplomatic process that sought to tone down extremist tendencies, and instead address the legitimate concerns of both Israelis and Arabs alike. The same approach is needed again today.

It will succeed if it acknowledges that Israelis, Arabs, Iranians and Turks in this region all have equal rights that must be implemented simultaneously. It will fail, and trigger Gaza-like destruction on a wider regional scale, if it tries mainly to appease Israeli political pathologies

and ideological extremism.

Tel Aviv and Jaffa (Joppa) – Normal First Day of Tours

There are no major geological faults beneath the sandy coast from Tel Aviv to Jaffa to Netanya.

The Tel Aviv and Jaffa beaches you will see are the products of the Nile littoral cell, one of the world’s longest, which runs along the southeastern Mediterranean, from Alexandria, Egypt, to Haifa Bay on the northern Israeli coast. For many countless centuries God has transported and deposited Nile derived quartz sand from the Nile Delta by long shore currents generated by approaching breaking waves. Northward net sand transport along the Mediterranean coast of Israel results from the larger waves approaching from the west and southwest compared to their counterparts from the west and northwest.

This shifting sand made it extremely difficult to build an artificial harbor on the Israeli coast line until the time of King Herod, who used an ingenious Roman technique of applying fast drying cement underwater to form walls for a sheltered port, which led to the

building of the artificial Caesarea Port.

Both Tel Aviv and Jaffa will be overrun by the Islamic Antichrist and his hoards in the war which drives Israel southward into the Negev Wilderness. Tel Aviv will be the Air Terminal where the large population of Jews (70 percent of total Jewish population in Israel) is air evacuated to the Military Air Terminal at Beersheba, the gateway to the Negev.

Israel will remain entrapped there as a nation for 1260 days.

PETER RAISES TABITHA FROM THE DEAD AT JAFFA (JOPPA)

Acts 9:39-43 – Then Peter arose and went with them. When he was come, they brought him into the upper chamber: and all the widows stood by him weeping, and shewing the coats and garments which Dorcas made, while she was with them. [40] But Peter put them all forth, and kneeled down, and prayed; and turning him to the body said, Tabitha, arise.

And she opened her eyes: and when she saw Peter, she sat up. [41] And he gave her his hand, and lifted her up, and when he had called the saints and widows, presented her alive. [42] And it was known throughout all Joppa; and many believed in the Lord. [43] And it came to pass, that he tarried many days in Joppa with one Simon a tanner.

GOD GAVE PETER A VISION TO REVEAL THE KINGDOM PROMISE WAS NOW OPEN TO BOTH JEW AND GENTILE IN THE CHURCH BY GRACE

Acts 10:9-16 – On the morrow, as they went on their journey, and drew nigh unto the city, Peter went up upon the housetop to pray about the sixth hour: [10] And he became very hungry, and would have eaten: but while they made ready, he fell into a trance, [11] And saw heaven opened, and a certain vessel descending unto him, as it had been a great sheet knit at the four corners, and let down to the earth: [12] Wherein were all manner of fourfooted beasts of the earth, and wild beasts, and creeping things, and fowls of the air.

[13] And there came a voice to him, Rise, Peter; kill, and eat. [14] But Peter said, Not so, Lord; for I have never eaten any thing that is common or unclean. [15] And the voice spake unto him again the second time, What God hath cleansed, that call not thou common. [16] This was done thrice: and the vessel was received up again into heaven.

THE PURPOSE AND RESULTS OF PETER’S VISION AT CAESAREA

Acts 10:24-48 – And the morrow after they entered into Caesarea. And Cornelius waited for them, and had called together his kinsmen and near friends.

[25] And as Peter was coming in, Cornelius met him, and fell down at his feet, and worshipped him. [26] But Peter took him up, saying, Stand up; I myself also am a man. [27] And as he talked with him, he went in, and found many that were come together.

[28] And he said unto them, Ye know how that it is an unlawful thing for a man that is a Jew to keep company, or come unto one of another nation; but God hath shewed me that I should not call any man common or unclean. [29] Therefore came I unto you without gainsaying, as soon as I was sent for: I ask therefore for what intent ye have sent for me? [30] And Cornelius said, Four days ago I was fasting until this hour; and at the ninth hour I prayed in my house, and, behold, a man stood before me in bright clothing, [31] And said, Cornelius, thy prayer is heard, and thine alms are had in remembrance in the sight of God. [32] Send therefore to Joppa, and call hither Simon, whose surname is Peter; he is lodged in the house of one Simon a tanner by the sea side: who, when he cometh, shall speak unto thee. Now therefore are we all here present before God, to hear all things that are commanded thee of God. [34] Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: [35] But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.

[36] The word which God sent unto the children of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ: (he is Lord of all:) [37] That word, I say, ye know, which was published throughout all Judaea, and began from Galilee, after the baptism which John preached; [38] How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.

[39] And we are witnesses of all things which he did both in the land of the Jews, and in Jerusalem; whom they slew and hanged on a tree: [40] Him God raised up the third day, and shewed him openly; [41] Not to all the people, but unto witnesses chosen before of God, even to us, who did eat and drink with him after he rose from the dead. [42] And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead.

[43] To him give all the prophets witness, that through his name whosoever believeth in him shall receive remission of sins.

[44] While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word. [45] And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost. [46] For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter, [47] Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we? [48] And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.

As we travel north to Netanya, if there is still enough daylight left, as we move north of Tel Aviv, we will see the high bluffs of the interior mountains on the left side of the bus, where a population of almost 2 and ½ million abides in the West Bank, of which a little less than ½ million are Jewish.

The Israeli Right’s old ambition was to keep every inch of this territory, especially the gains of the Six Day War in 1967.

But demographics now underlie every calculation and, for Israelis, the facts are deeply disturbing.

Today, their country has about 5.7 million Jewish inhabitants. Meanwhile, the West Bank, which Israel occupies, has 2.5 million Palestinians and the Gaza Strip another 1.5 million. The Arab minority within Israel itself numbers a further 1.4 million.

Altogether, about 5.7 million Jews and 5.4 million Arabs live between the Jordan and the Mediterranean. Because Arabs have more children, they will probably become

the majority within a decade.

If Israel keeps all this territory, the country will face a terrible dilemma. Will it be a Jewish state, or a democracy? Once the Arabs form the majority, Israel could not be both.

“People here think of this every day. It threatens them more than Hamas or Iran,” said Uri Dromi, a former prime ministerial spokesman. “If it’s one man, one vote, then Israel loses its Jewish character. If not, we become an apartheid state.”

Israel’s only escape from this dilemma would be to divest itself of four million Arabs by allowing a Palestinian state on the West Bank and Gaza. No Israeli politician can avoid this hard reality, not even Benjamin Netanyahu.

THE FIRST FAILURE OF ISRAEL TO CLAIM THE LAND PROMISE LED TO HER BEING DRIVEN BACK INTO WHAT IS CALLED THE NEGEV TODAY BY THE AMALEKITES AND THE CANAANITES.

Numbers 13:1-3 – And the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, [2] Send thou men, that they may search the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel: of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, every one a ruler among them. [3] And Moses by the commandment of the Lord sent them from the wilderness of Paran: all those men were heads of the children of Israel.

Numbers 13:25 to 14:4 – And they returned from searching of the land after forty days. [26] And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and shewed them the fruit of the land. Micah 5:5,6 – And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men. [6] And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

I have established, in previous updates, that “this man” of verse 5 is “the peace” himself because he ends the earthly reign of “the Assyrian” at the battle of Armageddon, and then brings in “the peace” that lasts for 1000 years on this present planet. It is only Jesus Christ himself who has the power to bring such a thing to pass.

I believe verse 6 to be one of the most interesting verses in the Scriptures that have yet to be fulfilled. Why am I so certain it has never been fulfilled? Because Israel has not wasted the land of Assyria with the sword, or the land of Nimrod in its entrances thereof, since Micah wrote these prophecies! At the time he wrote the borders of the expanding Assyrian Empire covered all of modern day Israel north of Ramallah, all of modern Syria, all of modern Lebanon, and all of modern Iraq north of Baghdad. The historical settling of this area between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers after the flood in Noah’s day is of great value in the interpretation of Micah 5:6.

Genesis 10:1,6,8,22 – Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood. [6] And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan. [8] And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

[22] The children of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram.

Assyria apparently derived its name from Asshur, the son of Shem.

Later in time Asshur was worshipped as the chief God of the Assyrians. Asshur went into the northern area of the fertile plain lying between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, and his descendants that settled it were eventually called Assyrians. It is certain that Israel never wasted this area. Nimrod was the grandson of Ham through Cush. He founded a great kingdom between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers, south of the area of Asshur’s descendants, that extended south to the Persian Gulf.

The “entrances” into it from the east, which is the direction the Israelis would come to “waste” it, were the shallow sections of the Euphrates River that could be waded to gain entrance. The Euphrates was, and is, perhaps the greatest carrier of top water silt on this planet.

The rapid descent gradient of its waters in the steep mountains of Turkey was able to sustain an enormous quantity of erosion debris cut off the mountain slopes, but when the water came onto the flat plains of modern day Iraq its speed was abruptly lowered, and the silt deposition rapidly built up lees across the Euphrates, making it possible for some areas to be waded. The long series of dams currently stretching from Turkey, through Syria, and into Iraq have helped to regulate the flow and silt deposition of the Euphrates, but at the time of Micah’s writings there would have been a plurality of wading entrances into the land of Nimrod across the Euphrates.

Now, why have I gone into such detail as to the locations of Assyria and the land of Nimrod? Because when Israel comes up out of the Negev at the battle of Armageddon, after having been confined there by the Assyrian for 1260 days, it will conquer a specified amount of territory to its north and east.

Revelation 12:6 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Malachi 4:1 – For, behold, the day cometh, that shall burn as an oven; and all the proud, yea, and all that do wickedly, shall be stubble: and the day that cometh shall burn them up, saith the Lord of hosts, that it shall leave them neither root nor branch.

Zechariah 12:6-9 – In that day will I make the governors of Judah like an hearth of fire among the wood, and like a torch of fire in a sheaf; and they shall devour all the people round about, on the right hand and on the left: and Jerusalem shall be inhabited again in her own place, even in Jerusalem.

[7] The Lord also shall save the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem do not magnify themselves against Judah. [8] In that day shall the Lord defend the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and he that is feeble among them at that day shall be as David; and the house of David shall be as God, as the angel of the Lord before them. [9] And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

Zechariah 14:9 – And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one.

Micah 5:6 – And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

Israel will claim all the land from the River of Egypt and the Mediterranean Sea to the Euphrates River, with a northern latitudinal border extending to Hamath (Hama) in Syria, and a southern border extending to Kadesh in the Sinai. And all this is not by accident, but by design and promise, for it was God’s ancient land grant promise to Abraham and to Israel. Its periphery is laid out in Genesis and Ezekiel. Its northern limits were to extend to the latitude of Hamath (Hama) in Syria, and its southern limits to the latitude of Kadesh. Its longitudinal limits to the west were to extend to the Mediterranean Sea and the River of Egypt, and its eastern longitudinal limits were to extend to the “entrances thereof” of the Euphrates River. This is the area of Micah 5:6 that Israel will “waste,” and then claim for a thousand years.

Genesis 15:18 – In the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

Ezekiel 47:17,19 – And the border from the sea shall be Hazar-enan, the border of Damascus, and the north northward, and the border of Hamath. And this is the north side. [19] And the south side

southward, from Tamar even to the waters of strife in Kadesh, the river to the great sea. And this is the south side southward.

After Christ has himself, by himself, defeated the Assyrian at the battle of Armageddon to bring in “the peace” of a thousand years, then Israel will roar north out of the Negev to mop up what is left of a demoralized army that is fleeing north. Israel will take Jerusalem back, then drive north, northeast, and east to claim all the land west of the Euphrates River.

Isaiah 66:15,16 – For, behold, the Lord will come with fire, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. [16] For by fire and by his sword will the Lord plead with all flesh: and the slain of the Lord shall be many.

Zechariah 14:12-14 – And this shall be the plague wherewith the Lord will smite all the people that have fought against Jerusalem; Their flesh shall consume away while they stand upon their feet, and their eyes shall consume away in their holes, and their tongue shall consume away in their mouth. [13] And it shall come to pass in that day, that a great tumult from the Lord shall be among them; and they shall lay hold every one on the hand of his neighbour, and his hand shall rise up against the hand of his neighbour. [14] And Judah also shall fight at Jerusalem; and the wealth of all the heathen round about shall be gathered together, gold, and silver, and apparel, in great abundance.

Micah 4:6,7 – In that day, saith the Lord, will I assemble her that halteth, and I will gather her that is driven out, and her that I have afflicted; [7] And I will make her that halted a remnant, and her that was cast far off a strong nation: and the Lord shall reign over them in mount Zion from henceforth, even for ever.

The First Word: Next year – in Des Moines?

On September 15, 1825, Buffalo, New York was the site of a grand ceremony that might have changed the course of Jewish history. On that day in St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, journalist and Democratic Party activist Mordecai Manuel Noah announced to a large crowd the creation of “the Jewish State of Ararat” on Grand Island in the Niagara River, near the US border with Canada.

Noah, an American Jew who wanted to provide “an asylum” for his persecuted brothers and sisters in Central and Eastern Europe, believed that the new colony – named after the mountain upon which Noah’s ark rested after the great flood – would provide that safe haven that world Jewry needed to survive. In the end, Noah’s vision did not translate into reality. All that is left of Ararat is its cornerstone. It is inscribed with the Hebrew words of the Shema prayer and now rests in Grand Island’s town hall as a curio to attract tourists.

Historians have not treated Mordecai Manuel Noah kindly, branding him a schemer and an egotist who dreamed dreams that bordered on the realm of insanity. Yet, let us remember that in the early 19th century, the idea of a Jewish homeland in the Land of Israel was a fantasy. The Ottoman Turks controlled Palestine – there was no way that the Muslim empire was going to allow a Jewish state in its domain. Noah, as an American Jew, tried to do his best to find an answer to the suffering of Jews in the Old World. For him, the New World provided an answer. He was not a crackpot. He was a man ahead of his time. For him, living in America two centuries ago, Grand Island was the only option.

In July 2006, when the IDF was struggling to defeat Hizbullah terrorists in Lebanon, Washington Post columnist Richard Cohen referred to the State of Israel as an “honest mistake.” He argued that the creation of a Jewish State in the Arab and Islamic Middle East had produced “a century of warfare and terrorism.” In the wake of the recent Israeli war of self-defense in Gaza, more and more American Jews seem to be agreeing with Cohen’s assessment. While many American Jews remain supporters of Israel, Jews here are starting to abandon hope that Israel will be able to survive. They argue that the Jewish state is surrounded by enemies, that Israel’s Jews are a house divided, and that, perhaps, the creation of a modern Jewish state in the Land of Israel was not meant to be. They are starting to say that “Israel is a mistake” and that Judaism and the Jewish people would survive even if Israel were to be obliterated by Iranian nuclear weapons.

Many years ago, a student in an adult education class that I taught at a local community college proposed that the Jewish state should not be in the Middle East, but in America’s Midwest. Would not a Jewish state in Iowa, located in a region far, far away from the hostile Arab and Islamic world of the Middle East, be the best location for a homeland for the Jewish people?

Perhaps, at the Passover Seder this year, I should conclude the festive meal with the cry of “Next Year in Des Moines!” Perhaps those who do not recognize the centrality and importance of Israel to the future of world Jewry are right. Perhaps we, as Jews, can go on even if Israel no longer exists. Perhaps we should forget who we are, the descendants of men and women who sacrificed in the Temple in Jerusalem, studied in the academies of Yavne and Tiberias, fought for independence in Modi’in and Betar against the Hellenists and the Romans. Perhaps we should discard the Hebrew Bible as our deed to the Land of Israel. Perhaps we should ignore all the archeological evidence proving that the Jewish connection to the Land of Israel dates back 3,000 years. Let us forget the Dead Sea Scrolls, the Bar Kochba letters, the Western Wall, Masada. Let us forget that Jews have yearned for millennia in the Diaspora to be redeemed in the Promised Land. Let us abandon Hebrew as a living language, relegating it only to sacred texts that we do not understand except through English translation. Perhaps this form of mass amnesia is the answer. Forgetting who we are, where we came from, and forgetting 60 years of sacrifice, backbreaking work, heroism on the battlefield, Nobel Prize winners, economic success,

the revival of Judaism in a Jewish homeland – for some Jews, this sort of amnesia seems to be the answer.

WORLD JEWRY WILL NOT survive the destruction of the State of Israel. The Jewish state is the religious, political and cultural center of all Jews. The hope of the Jewish future is the hope of Israel, the people and the nation. Some American Jews argue that Jews have lived in the Diaspora for more than 2,000 years and will continue to do so whether Israel exists or not. At best, this argument is misguided.

At worst, it is defeatist. With each passing day, we resemble more and more the spies in the Bible who demoralized the Israelites by claiming that the Land of Canaan could not be conquered.

Some American Jews are simply ignoring the realities of history. They forget that while Jews were persecuted in the medieval world, our people were never the victims of systematic mass murder and cultural repression.

Genocide of the Jews is a modern phenomenon, the result of both traditional anti-Semitism and the dynamics of modern nationalism. Have we forgotten the disaster of the utter powerlessness of the Jews of Europe only 65 years ago? Furthermore, Jewish identity is both religious and national. Whether it was Jewish sovereignty in the Land of Israel in ancient times or Jewish self-government in Germany and Spain in the medieval period, Jewish identity was never based solely on religion. We, as a people, cannot survive if we forfeit either crucial element of our identity.

American Jews fool themselves if they truly believe that Judaism could survive another destruction and another exile from the Jewish homeland. There will be no more genocide of the Jews. There will be no more exile of the Jewish nation from the Land of Israel. This time, history will not repeat itself. The year 2009 is not the year 586 BCE or

the year 70. Jews and Judaism in the 21st century would never recover from the destruction of the State of Israel.

I apologize to my fellow Americans in Iowa. I am sure your state is lovely and honorable. But it will never be the homeland of the Jewish nation. Forget Grand Island, Uganda, Argentina, Birobidjan and New Zealand. Jewish history began in the Land of Israel; our future as a nation is in the Land of Israel. Jews in the Diaspora, especially Jews living in America, can certainly play a vital and active role in the continuing drama of Jewish survival and continuity. There will always be a Jewish Diaspora – the State of Israel has not negated that reality. In the end, however, the future of the Jewish people will likely not be in Des Moines or New York or Los Angeles or Chicago or in my own Fort Lauderdale. The destiny of the Jews as a people – our future – will be played out in Jerusalem and Tel Aviv.
