(IsraelNN.com) A 14-year-old volunteer found a precious silver half-shekel coin used to pay taxes in ancient Temple times, and a coin minted during the Jewish rebellion against the Greek ruler Antiochus Epiphanes IV of the Chanukah story was also discovered in the rubble rescued from illegal construction carried out by the Muslim Wakf.

Both coins were discovered recently in the Temple Mount sifting operation in Jerusalem’s Emek Tzurim National Park. The project, funded by the Ir David (City of David) Foundation is now in its fourth year and is being carried out under the direction of Professor Gabriel Barkay of Bar Ilan University and archaeologist Tzachi Zweig.

Coin Minted During Period of Chanukah Story

The coin minted by Antiochus bears a portrait of the Greek monarch, who ruled from 175-163 BCE, during which time he looted the Temple of its treasures and erected a statue – an idol – in the sanctuary.

The Hasmonean rebellion was directed against those actions, and the liberation of the Temple and its rededication are the events commemorated in the holiday of Chanukah which Jews have celebrated ever since.

“This is the first coin of its kind that has been discovered, in near perfect condition, in rubble that comes from the Temple Mount,” said Professor Barkay.

Silver Half-Shekel is a ‘Rare Jerusalem Find’

The silver half-shekel coin, discovered by 14-year-old Neve Daniel resident Omer Ya’ari, is one of those that were used to pay the annual Temple tax, appears to have been minted in 66/67 CE, the first year of

the Great Revolt against the Romans. The tax, which every Jew was required to pay annually to the Temple, is described in Exodus (30:11-15).

On one side of the coin, a branch with three pomegranates is visible, with the inscription, “Holy Jerusalem.” The other side of the coin bears a picture of a chalice from the First Temple and the words, “Half Shekel.”

Such coins were apparently minted on the Temple Mount itself by the Temple authorities, according to the Israel Antiquities Authority. It is considered one of the rarest of finds in Jerusalem archaeology. “Though the coin is in excellent condition, it does have signs of having been damaged by fire, most likely the fires that destroyed the Second Temple in 70 CE,” noted Barkay.

This is the first time that such a coin has been discovered in rubble from the Temple Mount itself, although similar coins have in the past been found elsewhere in Jerusalem and at Masada.

Temple Mount Rubble: 3,500 Ancient Coins So Far

The illegal construction and excavation work carried out in November 1999 by the Muslim Wakf on the Temple Mount destroyed countless priceless archaeological treasures from the history of the region.

The work, which caused irreparable damage to the site, “is part of a larger trend of illegal work carried out by the Wakf to ‘revise’ history and to eradicate the remains of Jewish history on the Mount,” charged Barkay.

“The rubble from this illegal work was removed by bulldozers and trucks and discarded in the Kidron Valley. Though these remains are no longer in their original context, they contain important archaeological material,” he said.

To date, over 40,000 volunteers carefully sifting every day through the rubble of the construction site have succeeded in recovering more than 3,500 ancient coins, ranging from the Persian Period to the Ottoman Period. For those who might want to consider volunteering, Barkay noted that applications are welcomed and accepted through the City of David Foundation.

The Temple Mount Sifting Project welcomes visitors during the Chanukah holiday vacation and at other times.

The site may be reached by way of the access road along the western slope of Mount Scopus toward the Ein Tzurim National Park, and is open Sunday through Thursday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and Fridays from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

THE 70 WEEKS OF DANIEL’S 9:24-27 PROPHECY – Part 2

According to the Oxford Concise Dictionary of World Religions, the Evangelical Protestantism Movement emerged in Britain in the 1730s. The conversion of John Wesley in 1738 is often regarded as the start of the evangelical movement.

Wesley was forced to preach out of doors and to eventually develop an organization of his own. From 1740 to 1800 the evangelicals were drawn into the movement primarily from Wesleyan Methodists, Primitive Methodists, nonconformist Protestant bodies such as the Congregationalists, and from the Baptist groups.

And it shocked many when the Evangelical Movement had spread to the Church of England by 1800.

It was a movement of great emotional outbursts and feelings which affected virtually every corner of preaching and teaching.

Within the Evangelical Movement a different viewpoint arose in the teaching of prophecy, particularly in the interpretation of Daniel 9:27. I have diligently searched for any commentary published before 1740 that indicated the three “HE’S” in Daniel 9:27 were the antichrist, and have not found a single one. I am not saying one does not exist, but I have been looking for years, and have never found one. All publications before 1740 clearly identified the three “HE’S” as Jesus Christ, “the Messiah the Prince,” or as Antiochus Epiphanes. It has stunned me as to how much of our teaching today about the antichrist is all tied back to the belief that the antichrist is the one referred to in Daniel 9:27. I beg of you to take a good look at the series on the 70 Weeks of Daniel exposition I am now presenting in Parts.

Even if you think it is hogwash, please carefully read all the Parts . If it is correct, it will help you to understand what is going on when the antichrist does not follow the pattern currently taught in most religious circles. If it is wrong, it will have done you no harm, but please read it. I have no ulterior motive for gain in presenting it to you.

My motive is a very simple one. I am an old man who is six years past his allotted threescore and ten years, and is very concerned that many are going to be confused when prophetic events suddenly conclude in a manner quite different from what they expect. For better or for worse, I believe the religious world took a wrong turn in prophetic teaching in 1740, and that many believe what is erroneously tied back to the antichrist representing the three “HE’S” in Daniel 9:27. It makes a terrific difference in the way the end days in which we now live will come down.

Daniel 9:27 – And HE shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week HE shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations HE shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

I fully exposited on Daniel 9:24 in Part 1 of the previous Blog, establishing how Daniel had learned, from Jeremiah’s writings, that seventy weeks of years were determined upon the people of Israel and their holy city Jerusalem.

Under Daniel’s formula for the period, each one of Jeremiah’s seventy years was equal to seven years, and he identified each seven year period as one week of years (So 7 X 70 = 490 years or 70 weeks of years). In verse 25 he gives us a starting point for his prophetic clock to begin ticking toward a countdown of 490 years or 70 weeks of years.

Daniel 9:25 – Know therefore and understand, that FROM the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem UNTO the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

The 490 year time clock was to start ticking when “the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem” was issued. However, there were four different proclamations issued by three Persian kings:

1. The Decree of Cyrus in 536 B.C.

2. The Decree of Darius Hystaspes in 519 B.C.

3. The first Decree of Artaxerxes Longimanus in 457 B.C.

4. The second Decree of Artaxerxes Longimanus in 445 B.C.

The Scripture indicated that FROM the time the commandment (decree) was issued UNTIL the Messiah the Prince arrived, would be 69 weeks of years or 483 years (7 weeks + 62 weeks = 69 weeks of years) ( 7 X 69 = 483 years)

Now, some problems arise in the establishment of historical dates that begin at “FROM” and end at “UNTIL” – Are these prophetic years or calendar years – How are they affected by corrections to the Gentile calendars by Rome – And how are they affected by the lunar calendar used by the Hebrews? All these things make it difficult to decide which one of the four decrees applies to Daniel 9:25. Was Daniel indicating solar years of 365.25 or prophetic lunar years of 360 days

? Most likely he meant years of 360 days.

Which one of the four decrees was the one that Daniel indicated in his prophecy? The decree of Cyrus in 536 B.C. was limited to the building of the Temple.

The decree of Darius Hystaspes was also limited to the building of the Temple.

The first decree of Artaxerxes Longimanus in 457 B.C. demonstrated a larger range of granting authority to carry out all that needed to be done, much more than the two decrees before it. His second decree in 445 B.C. is also very specific in its instruction and authority to rebuild Jerusalem. So, we are able, because of the lack of reference “to restore and to build Jerusalem” in the first two decrees, to say that it must be one of the two issued by Artaxerxes Longimanus in 457 B. C. and 445 B.C.

If Daniel’s prophecy is based on our present calendar year, which I doubt, then FROM the time Artaxerxes first decree was issued in 457 B.C. until the baptism of Jesus the Messiah in 27 A.D., would be 483 years or 69 weeks. This was the viewpoint held by the great Baptist Bible expositor B.H. Carroll in the late eighteen hundreds and early nineteen hundreds. But Dr. Carroll makes this statement in his writings on Daniel 9:25, when dealing with prophetic years of 360 days: “Hengstenberg, on the other hand, while agreeing with the second decree of 445 B.C., controverts the theory of a year of 360 days, and contests the date usually accepted (445 B.C.). By an elaborate historical argument of great plausibility he seeks to prove that the 20th year of Artaxerxes Longimanus falls on the date 455 B.C. and then, by adding 483 years, Hengstenberg puts Christ’s acknowledgment by His Father, at His baptism, as the true coming of Messiah the Prince.” Sir Robert Anderson has two books on Daniel, “The Coming Prince” and “Daniel in the Critic’s Den.” He uses the usually accepted debt of 445 B.C. and articulates a strong time sequence to prove his conclusions.

Now, please allow me to state my conclusions. I was taught certain things about Daniel 9:24-27 by many old preachers who are now at home with the Lord.

Many of them were born in the 19th century and lived into the thirties, forties, and fifties of the 20th. In northern Arkansas where I was raised, these old fellows read after the leading Baptist theologians of their day from books they had procured from old book stores or the libraries of older preachers when they died. Some of these books were written in the late 18th and early 19th century, and they finally just worn out and fell apart from constant use.

They didn’t have opportunity to attend a seminary, but they were diligent in reading the works of the Baptists who did. These are the men who first taught me prophecy many years before I graduated from seminaries, colleges, and universities. In the weeks to come, Lord willing, I am going to pass on to you what they taught me, and you may be surprised. Now, in all honesty, before God and man, I believe it was 483 years “FROM” the decree “UNTO” the baptism of Jesus, when he began His earthly ministry. I accept it by faith in God’s word. The problem is not with the Word of God, it is with the human setting of the time of the proper decree.

My main reason for writing such a lengthy discourse was to show how difficult it is to absolutely fix the precise date the proclamation was issued to which Daniel referred. BUT I AM DELIGHTED TO TELL YOU THAT WHAT IS REALLY IMPORTANT CAN BE PROVEN BY A SINGLE WORD, THE WORD “AFTER” IN DANIEL 9:26A.

Daniel 9:25,26A – Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times. [26] And AFTER threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: (The 7 weeks is understood in Hebrew literary style to also be added to the 62 in verse 26 so as to avoid redundancy in a flowing chronological sequence of events, i.e. AFTER 69 weeks. Otherwise, Messiah would have been cut off before he was born.)

The Hebrew word used for “AFTER” is “ACHAR,” which means, in context, “AFTERWARD.” This same word “ACHAR” is used in the following Scriptures.

Jeremiah 31:33 – But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; AFTER those days, saith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

Joel 2:28 – And it shall come to pass AFTERWARD, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

Hosea 3:5 – AFTERWARD shall the children of Israel return, and seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall fear the Lord and his goodness in the latter days.

Hosea 6:2 – AFTER two days will he revive us: in the third day he will raise us up, and we shall live in his sight.

The vast majority of prophetic expositors today claim that Messiah was cut off, crucified, to END the 69th week, bringing the hands of Daniel’s clock to a standstill, and that we have a full week of seven years waiting to be fulfilled when it begins to tick again, but that cannot be true since Christ was crucified AFTER the 69th week during the 70th week, leaving less than seven years to be fulfilled.

The significance of the placement of “AFTER” in Daniel 9:26A cannot be overemphasized.

Why? Because it definitely states that Messiah would not be cut off to END the 69th week, but would be crucified “AFTER” it, at some time in the 70th week. The clock of Daniel stopped ticking at some time in the final 70th week.

So when was Jesus cut off by crucifixion in the 70th week? The answer is of the utmost importance.

I know we have less than seven years once the clock starts to tick again, but how much less do we have? It has to be less than 2520 days, but more

than 1260 days

? We will proceed into verses 26 and 27 in a future update to find the answers to these questions, Lord willing.

The United States and Russia are bidding hard against each other to give the Lebanese army heavy weapons, a contest which Israeli diplomacy has failed to deter, DEBKAfile’ s military

sources report.

Defense ministry official Amos Gilead arrived in Moscow Friday, Dec.

19 only to watch his train leaving the station: Sophisticated Russian S-300 air defense systems were already speeding toward Tehran to guard its nuclear sites and MiG-29 fighter jets had been pledged to Lebanon.

In Washington, too, Israeli diplomats pleaded in vain with Bush administration leaders to refrain from giving Lebanon tanks and a fleet of combat helicopters. Ten Cobras have led the way.

They argued that there are no safeguards against American hardware falling into the hands of the Lebanese terrorist Hizballah, whose leaders vowed again Friday to destroy the Jewish state by launching a regional conflagration.

The spillover has a precedent: In the Israel-Hizballah war of 2006, the Lebanese army, then only lightly armed, let the Shiite terrorists fire missiles at Israel’s Mediterranean naval ships from its coastal radar positions.

Next time round, Israel faces a far tougher, upgraded arsenal of anti-air missiles made in Iran and Russia -supplied in the last two years by Tehran and Damascus, plus the new influx of US-made tanks and helicopters.

Israel’s strategic standing has thus been allowed to drop another notch thanks to the spineless incompetence of Israel’s current leaders: Ehud Olmert, Tzipi Livni and Ehud Barak.

David Hale of the state department announced the US package for Lebanon Friday, Dec. 19, while denying Washington was competing with Moscow after the Russians gave Beirut a gift of 10 MiG fighters. After meeting Lebanese prime minister Fouad Siniora in Beirut, Hale said that, in addition to M-50 Supersherman tanks, the US package under preparation included “air support capabilities (helicopters) with precision weapons and urban combat gear.” He did not go into numbers or types of weaponry.

The US was helping the Lebanese army “to maintain internal security and fighting terrorism in Lebanon,” Hale said.

On Dec. 12, DEBKAfile reported exclusively that al Qaeda had relocated some of its Iraq terror force to Lebanon and that UNIFIL’s peacemakers had been placed on the alert in the southern Sidon-Ain Hilwa region where the incoming jihadis were preparing attacks for Lebanon and across the border into Israel as well.

American official visits to Beirut have become more frequent in recent weeks.

In late November, the head of the US Central Command, Gen. David Petraeus, held talks with Lebanese leaders, followed on Dec.

10, by the coordinator of anti-terror operations at the state department, Dell Dailey.

The last arrival, Hale, may choose to play down the competition with Moscow, but DEBKAfile’s military sources see American and Russian military instructors working cheek by jowl to teach the Lebanese army how to use their respective weapons, especially air defense tactics. Close competition in these circumstances is bound to lead to the piling on of advanced hardware offers by the contestants. The big American military mission in Beirut at the moment will no doubt be followed by a Russian delegation of comparable size.

Washington has not prevented Moscow from building up a rival military presence in Lebanon capital, a development in which Israel has a high security stake.

Whereas Russia’s strategic orbit focused earlier on new naval bases in Syria’s Mediterranean ports of Latakia and Tartous, it has since stretched to a military foothold 250 km to the south, right up to Israel’s back door from Lebanon.

While the tanks America is giving Lebanon are ageing models, Israeli military experts comment that they form the nucleus of the Lebanese army’s first tank corps, along with its first helicopters – two valuable resources coming within the Hizballah’s grasp and in whose use Iranian officers will quickly instruct them.

DEBKAfile also reveals that a group of Hizballah operatives recently paid a secret visit to Moscow and asked for Russian hardware. The Russians did not respond. But by supplying the Lebanese army with heavy equipment along with experts and instructors, it has opened the way for these assets to be diverted to the Shiite terrorists.

Jerusalem is too busy spinning fairy tales about the feasibility of peace with Syria to pay proper attention to the hectic, hostile activity on Israel’s northern border.

Shin Bet chief: Hamas rockets can hit outskirts of Be’er Sheva

Shin Bet security service chief Yuval Diskin said Sunday that Hamas is capable of firing rockets that can strike targets as distant from Gaza as the outskirts of the Negev capital of Be’er Sheva.

He told a meeting of the cabinet that rockets could also hit Kiryat Gat and Ashdod, cities which thus far were seen as beyond range. Hamas’ armed wing used the last six months of relative calm to improve its medium and long-range rockets and mortars, he said.

“We believe that if we strike at significant assets, they will respond with longer-range fire,” Diskin said.

Hamas officials, meanwhile, are not ruling out a renewal of suicide bombings in Israel. Ayman Taha, a Hamas representative in Gaza, told Haaretz that under the current conditions, no cease-fire is in effect whatsoever. “Rocket fire is in the hands of the military wing. It will decide how to react,” he said. “Resistance must continue in every way and by every means, as long as the occupation continues.”

In the course of the cabinet meeting, a number of ministers took Defense Minister Ehud Barak to task for what they termed the failure of his policy of relative restraint in the face of continued rocket fire into Israel from Gaza.

Barak told the cabinet that if Israel wants to retake the Strip, a broad offensive would be needed. But he said that there was no magic formula by which, in one blow, quiet would be restored and Hamas taken apart.

According to Diskin, Hamas has lifted its reins from other armed organizations, and had resumed firing on its own.

“Make no mistake, Hamas is interested in continuing the truce, but wants to improve its terms.

It wants us to lift the siege [on Hamas-ruled Gaza], stop [IDF] attacks, and extend the truce to include Judea and Samaria [the West Bank],” Diskin said.

The is no effective mediator between Israel and the Palestinian side, he said. The Egyptians are sitting on the fence, and there’s a lack of trust between Hamas and Egypt, he continued, adding that were Hamas to find itself in a situation in which it needed Egyptian mediation, the Egyptians will again be players.

Israeli government again backs down as Gaza missile war boils over

No military action to stamp out the Palestinian missile blitz against southwestern Israel will be undertaken before “international support” is organized and an attempt to renew the “ceasefire” with Hamas is undertaken.

This was the gist of the Israeli cabinet Sunday morning, Dec. 21, after Palestinian terrorists fired eight missiles and mortar shells at Israeli civilian locations, continuing the blitz launched before and after Hamas ended its six-month “truce” Friday.

Israeli helicopters struck three missile teams preparing to fire near the north Gaza town of Beit Hanoun. But the missiles kept coming – 17 by midday.

The ministers pushing hard for harsh military action gave way to prime minister Ehud Olmert and defense minister Ehud Barak’s decision to continue the foot-dragging. Neither was perturbed by being accused of letting Hamas and its terrorist partners get away almost scot-free with waging a cross-border war against a large Israeli civilian population.

Cold shouldered by Olmert and Barak, foreign minister Tzipi Livni announced that if she were elected prime minister her government would wipe out the Hamas regime in Gaza.

Sunday, two people were hurt when a missile blast wrecked a Sderot home and a second struck the Netiv Haasara greenhouses injuring a foreign worker. The town of Ashkelon took four hits, two exploding in the city’s industrial estate and two outside strategic facilities on the Mediterranean shore.

Schoolchildren were told to stay in their classrooms and forbidden the playground. Magen David Adom’s first aid services are on high alert at all the locations within range of Gaza after the population spent Saturday ducking 15 Palestinian missiles and 26 mortar rounds.

There were no injuries but the damage to property was considerable.

Hamas leaders have gone into hiding in the smuggling tunnels honeycombing the southern Gaza Strip in case Israel goes back to targeted assassinations.

Hamas possesses a rocket arsenal that is double the size and range of what it had six months ago. Hamas has 8-10,000 rockets of various types.

Six months ago, its rockets had a 20-km. range (12 miles). Today, its rockets may be able to hit Beersheba. Hamas’ defense system for Gaza includes eight divisions and 16,000 armed personnel as well as anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons, and 50 km. of underground tunnels.

JEWISH CELEBRATION OF HANUKKAH AND DANIEL’S LITTLE HORN

In 600 B.C. Daniel predicted the event which the Jews celebrate as Hanukkah or the Feast of Lights – The event itself which they now celebrate was fulfilled in 165 B.C. when the Temple was cleansed from defilement by Antiochus Epiphanes by Judas Maccabeus. Daniel prophesied this some 400 years before it happened.

Hanukkah is the Jewish “Feast of Dedication” or Hanukkah, which is observed from the 24th of Chislev to Tevet 2nd. This year it begins on the night of December 21st and continues to December 29th. It is found in John 10:22,23,

John 10:22,23 – And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter. [23] And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon’s porch.

The Feast of Dedication was a Jewish festival observed for eight days from the 25th of Chislev in commemoration of the reconsecration (165 BC) of the Jewish Temple in Jerusalem, and especially of the altar of burnt offering, after they had been desecrated in the persecution under Antiochus Epiphanes (168 BC). The distinguishing features of the festival were the illumination of houses and synagogues, a custom probably taken over from the Feast of Tabernacles, and the recitation of Psalm 30:1-12.

Psalm 30:1-12 – A Psalm and Song at the dedication of the house of David – I will extol thee, O Lord; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me. [2] O Lord my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me. [3] O Lord, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. [4] Sing unto the Lord, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. [5] For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning. [6] And in my prosperity I said, I shall never be moved. [7] Lord, by thy favour thou hast made my mountain to stand strong: thou didst hide thy face, and I was troubled. [8] I cried to thee, O Lord; and unto the Lord I made supplication. [9] What profit is there in my blood, when I go down to the pit? Shall the dust praise

thee? shall it declare thy truth? [10] Hear, O Lord, and have mercy upon me: Lord, be thou my helper.

[11] Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing: thou hast put off my sackcloth, and girded me with gladness; [12] To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.

Hanukkah,” from the Hebrew word for “dedication” or “consecration”, marks the re-dedication of the Temple in Jerusalem after its desecration by the forces of Antiochus IV and commemorates the “miracle of the container of oil.” According to the Talmud, at the re-dedication following the victory of the Maccabees over the Seleucid Empire, there was only enough consecrated olive oil to fuel the eternal flame in the Temple for one day. Miraculously, the oil burned for eight days, which was the length of time it took to press, prepare and consecrate fresh olive oil.

Hanukkah is also mentioned in the deuterocanonical books of 1 Maccabees and 2 Maccabees.

1 Maccabees states: “For eight days they celebrated the rededication of the altar. Then Judah and his brothers and the entire congregation of Israel decreed that the days of the rededication…should be observed…every year…for eight days. (1 Mac.4:56-59)” According to 2 Maccabees, “the Jews celebrated joyfully for eight days as on the feast of Booths.”

Daniel Predicted the Event Jews Celebrate as Hanukkah long before it Happened

Daniel 8:8 – Therefore the he goat waxed very great: and when he was strong, the great horn was broken; and for it came up four notable ones toward the four winds of heaven.

The great horn was Alexander the Great of Macedon. The four horns were his four generals, among whom Alexander’s great Macedonian Empire was divided after his untimely demise.

In 334 B.C., Alexander the Great, son of Phillip II of Macedon, began a military campaign that would quickly bring down the Persian Empire. He defeated Persian armies at the Battle of

the Granicus in the spring of that year. Moving eastward, Alexander defeated a much larger Persian army led by Darius III in 333 BC.

Alexander took the Macedonian Empire to its greatest heights in a very short amount of time. He was undefeated as a military commander, and “became exceedingly great “, conquering most of the known world of that time. However, the years of constant battle took its toll, and Alexander died in June of 323 B.C., at the tender age of 33. The cause of death is not quite known, but mentioned as possibilities are “malaria, poisoning, typhoid fever, viral encephalitis or the consequences of alcoholism”. His death would cause the kingdom to be divided among his four generals. In Daniel 7:6, the “beast had four heads” signifying the four generals who would each govern a part of the empire at Alexander’s untimely death at the age of 33. In Daniel 8:22 they represent horns who are four kingdoms.

Daniel 7:6 – After this I beheld, and lo another, like a leopard, which had upon the back of it four wings of a fowl; the beast had also four heads; and dominion was given to it.

Daniel 8:22 – Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power.

The four generals and their kingdoms from the divided Macedonian Empire were:

1. Cassander – Macedonia

2. Lysimachus – Thrace and Asia Minor

3. Seleucus – Syria – Became known as King of the North in Middle East

4. Ptolemy – Egypt – Became known as King of the South in Middle East

Daniel 8:9-12 – And out of one of them came forth a little horn, which waxed exceeding great, toward the south, and toward the east, and toward the pleasant land. [10] And it waxed great, even to the host of heaven; and it cast down some of the host and of the stars to the ground, and stamped upon them. [11] Yea, he magnified himself even to the prince of the host, and by him the daily sacrifice was taken away, and the place of his sanctuary was cast down. [12] And an host was given him against the daily sacrifice by reason of transgression, and it cast down the truth to the ground; and it practiced, and prospered.

The one dynasty that would emerge from the divided kingdom that would have great importance to the Hebrew people would be the Seleucid Dynasty.

In particular, the persecution of Antiochus Epiphanes is prophesied here, with his attempts to wipe out the Jewish religion. “And the regular burnt offering was taken away from him”. The NKJV renders this phrase, “by him the daily sacrifices were taken away”.

Antiochus sought to destroy the Holy Scriptures, throwing “truth to the ground”. His actions prompted the Maccabean Revolt in 167 B.C.

Daniel 8:13,14 – Then I heard one saint speaking, and another saint said unto that certain saint which spake, How long shall be the vision concerning the daily sacrifice, and the transgression of desolation, to give both the sanctuary and the host to be trodden under foot? [14] And he said unto me, Unto two thousand and three hundred days; then shall the sanctuary be cleansed.

There are several different interpretations of the “2,300 days,” as most Bibles render this. It could very well be a literal time period in this instance. The literal meaning of the Hebrew phrase is “evenings and mornings”, and it likely refers to the number of sacrifices that would be missed before “the sanctuary shall be restored to its rightful state.”

The Temple Sanctuary was defiled by Antiochus in 168 B.C. and was restored to a rightful state by Judas Maccabeus in 165 B.C.

When the Temple was defiled the Greek Kingdom was in its 145th year, which would have been 168 B.C.

When the Temple sacrifice started again the Greek Kingdom was in its 148th year, which would have been 165 B.C.

I Maccabees 1:54 – Now on the fifteenth day of Chislev, in

the one hundred and forty-fifth year, they erected a desolating sacrilege on the altar of burnt-offering.

Daily sacrifices ended on the 15th of the 9th month of the 145th year (of the Kingdom of the Greeks) when Antiochus Epiphanes set up the idol of desolation on the altar of God.

I Maccabees 4:52,53 – And they arose before the morning of the 25th day of the 9th month of the 148th year (of the Kingdom of the Greeks), and they offered sacrifices according to the law on the altar of God.

Daily sacrifices were reinstated on the morning of the 25th day of the 9th month of the 148th year (of the Kingdom of the Greeks) on the altar of God.

THE GREEK CALENDAR IN USE AT THE TIME OF THE MACCABEES

The Greek calendar, like the Hebrew calendar, was 360 days in length

Every other year an intercalary month of 30 days was added

Using the Greek calendar according to Herodotus and assuming that the years 148 and 146 were intercalary years, we come up with the following calculation: 9-15-145 to 9-25-148, the dates given in Maccabees from the desecration to the cleansing, is three years and ten days. Thus, the math sentence following the Greek calendar which was in use at the time the prophecy was fulfilled would be: (3 X 360) + (2 X 30) + 10.

3 x 360 equals————————————1080 days

2 x 30 (2 intercalary months)———————60 days

From 15th to 25th equals————————–10 days

Total———————————————–1150 days

1150 x 2 sacrifices per day equals———— 2300 days

This is exactly the period which would accomplish exactly 2,300 sacrifices, one in the morning and one in the evening!

So it is not by accident this prophecy is referred to as “the vision of the evening and morning” in Daniel 8:26

Daniel 8:26 – And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.

Using the Greek calendar is obviously the correct way to compute the number of days between the dates in Maccabees. Using that method arrives at the correct computation.

Do not lose sight of the fact that Daniel wrote this prophecy many years before it was fulfilled. The divine nature of the book of Daniel is validated by this prophecy. God’s messenger told Daniel there would be a period when a king, who would rise up out of one of four divisions of the coming Greek Empire, who would attack the Holy Land and stop the daily sacrifice for 2,300 times.

Daniel 8:23-25 – And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. [24] And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. [25] And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand.

Antiochus exalted himself as the god Zeus, seeking people to worship him, calling himself Theos Epiphanes, which means “the manifest God.”

The common, but less compelling interpretation, is that th

is latter day king refers to a future antichrist. However, in keeping with the original theme of the book, I am convinced that the best candidate for this latter day king is Antiochus Epiphanes. This was the view of John Gill as well.

The Apocryphal book of 1 Maccabees tells us:

I Maccabees 1:10 – And there came out of them a wicked root Antiochus surnamed Epiphanes, son of Antiochus the king, who had been an hostage at Rome, and he reigned in the hundred and thirty and seventh year of the kingdom of the Greeks.

The book of 1 Maccabees also tells us of Antiochus destroying many mighty men and defeating Ptolemy, conquering Egypt (Verses 16-19). “He shed much blood, and spoke with great arrogance” (verse 24). “According to the decree, they put to death the women who had their children circumcised, and their families and those who circumcised them; and they hung the infants from their mothers’ necks. But many in Israel stood firm and were resolved in their hearts not to eat unclean food. They chose to die rather than to be defiled by food or to profane the holy covenant; and they did die. Very great wrath came upon Israel.” (verses 60-64).

“And he shall be broken–but by no human hand”, alludes to his being a horn; it is expressive of his death, and the manner of it; that he should not die by the hand of an enemy in battle, nor be assassinated by the hand of a man, but be cut off by the immediate hand of God. Jacchiades says, that by the providence of God he fell ill of a bad disease, and at the cry of one of his elephants his chariot was overturned, and he fell on the ground, and his bones were broken. Of his death, and the manner of it, in the Apocrypha: “Now when the king heard these words, he was astonished and sore moved: whereupon he laid him down upon his bed, and fell sick for grief, because it had not befallen him as he looked for.” (1 Maccabees 6:8)

“But the Lord Almighty, the God of Israel, smote him with an incurable and invisible plague: or as soon as he had spoken these words, a pain of the bowels that was remediless came upon him, and sore torments of the inner parts;” (2 Maccabees 9:5)

“So that the worms rose up out of the body of this wicked man, and whiles he lived in sorrow and pain, his flesh fell away, and the filthiness of his smell was noisome to all his army.” (2 Maccabees 9:9)”

So Antiochus fulfills the entire prophecy, and does so in the time frame given.

Daniel 8:26 – And the vision of the evening and the morning which was told is true: wherefore shut thou up the vision; for it shall be for many days.

The fulfillment of this prophecy would take some 400 years, and would bring about the final world kingdom that would usher in the First Advent of our Lord.

Rubble yields silver Temple ‘tax’ half-shekel

Two ancient coins, one used to pay the Temple tax and another minted by the Greek leader the Jews fought in the story of Hanukka, have been uncovered amid debris from Jerusalem’s Temple Mount, an Israeli archeologist said Thursday.

The two coins were recently found in rubble discarded by Islamic officials from the Temple Mount.

It is carefully being sifted by two archeologists and a team of volunteers at a Jerusalem national park.

The first coin, a silver half-shekel, was apparently minted on the Temple Mount itself by Temple authorities in the first year of the Great Revolt against the Romans in 66-67 CE, said Bar-Ilan University Professor Gabriel Barkay, who is leading the sifting operation.

One side of the coin, which was found by a 14-year-old volunteer, shows a branch with three pomegranates, and the inscription “Holy Jerusalem”; the other side bears a chalice from the First Temple and says “Half-Shekel.”

In the Bible, Jews are commanded to contribute half a shekel each for maintaining the Temple in Jerusalem. At the time of the Temple’s construction in the sixth century BCE, every Jew was ordered to make an obligatory symbolic donation of a half-shekel. This consistent yet small payment allowed all Jews, irrespective of socioeconomic position, to participate in building the Temple.

After the construction was completed, the tax continued to be collected for the purchase of public sacrifices and for maintaining the Temple’s furnishings.

The coin uncovered shows signs of fire damage, most likely by the fires that destroyed the Second Temple when it was invaded by the Romans in 70 CE, Barkay said.

Although similar coins have been discovered at various locations throughout Jerusalem – including one found at the ancient City of David earlier this year – this is the first time such a coin has been discovered in rubble from the Temple Mount itself, he said.

No archeological excavations are carried out on the Temple Mount, in keeping with the religious sensitivities of both Muslims and Jews.

The second coin discovered in the rubble was minted by, and bears a portrait of, the Greek leader Antiochus Epiphanes IV, who ruled from 175-163 BCE. During that time, he looted t

he Temple of its treasures and erected a statue in the sanctuary.

The Hasmonean rebellion was directed against his actions. The rebellion, the Hasmoneans’ liberation of the Temple, and the events surrounding the Hanukka story took place on the Temple Mount.

The sifting operation began four years ago, after Islamic officials discarded truckloads of rubble from the Temple Mount in the Kidron valley following illegal Wakf construction work on the ancient compound – work that caused irreparable archeological damage to Judaism’s holiest site.

The operation under way at the Jerusalem park, which is funded by the City of David Foundation, has retrieved more than 3,500 ancient coins that range from the Persian Period to the Ottoman Period.

DANIEL’S PROPHECY OF 70 WEEKS – PART 1

From Now to the beginning of the last 1260 days of Daniel’s 70 Weeks

Dardanelle MBC began to issue Prophecy Updates some eight years ago and, during that time period, I have been consistent in the chronological sequence of events I believe will begin when Israel is attacked at some point in time between 2010 and 2015 (1), and will then follow the sequence in (2) to (5). They are found repeatedly in the hundreds of Prophecy Archive Updates and Blogs we have issued and are as follows:

1. Antichrist will suddenly attack Israel, leading 10 Arab nations in a vicious surprise Jihad from the north out of Syria and Lebanon.

2. Two-thirds of the Israeli population will perish in the attack.

3. Jerusalem will fall to the Arab nations.

4. The Arab nations will take the land from Dan to Beersheba.

5. One-third of Israel will flee into the Negev Wilderness, where it will remain under a truce for some three and one-half years.

(1) I Thessalonians 5:3,4 – For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. [4] But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief. (See Archive Prophecy Updates 66A, 67A, and 70)

(2) Zechariah 13:8 – And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein. (See Archive Prophecy Update 93)

(3) Zechariah 14:1,2 – Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee.

[2] For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

(4)&(5) Revelation 12:6 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Since I hold to the prophetic interpretation all the publications prior to 1740 put forth concerning the “he” in Daniel 9:27, I am concerned that a lot of believers are going to

be in shock when all this suddenly begins to occur without a prolonged period of an antichrist arising in Europe, without a written peace treaty that lasts three and one half years, and a lot of other prophetic interpretations by TV prophetic experts that give the impression we have a long time before all this begins to happen. I am concerned about this to the extent that I am going to repeat what I believe about Daniel’s Prophecy of the 70 Weeks of Years. I hope you will consider it, even if you don’t believe it. If it is correct, then it would be beneficial to you when it happened.

THE 70 WEEKS OF DANIEL’S 9:24-27 PROPHECY! Part 1

God revealed to Daniel that Jeremiah’s prophecy of seventy years of captivity, which would accomplish the desolation of Jerusalem, had a secondary interpretation involving a much longer period of time.

Daniel 9:1,2 – In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans; [2] In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem.

Then, from 9:24 through 9:27, Daniel unveils the events of a lengthy time period that would affect Israel and the holy city of Jerusalem for 490 years (7 X 70 years). He understands each year of Jeremiah’s prophecy to be equal to seven years, and identifies each period of seven years as one week.

Daniel 9:24 – Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.

The contextual subject of this entire discourse involves the activity of “the Messiah the Prince,” Jesus Christ, up to the time of his cutting off in the midst of the last week, and the events which will again involve him as the last part of that week is set in motion when Daniel’s clock begins to tick again. The Holy City will again be overrun from the north by the troops of the antichrist, as it was by Titus in AD 70. I have never found any pre-1740 commentary on the Bible that identified the “he” of Daniel 9:27 as the antichrist. They were unanimous in identifying the “he” as Jesus Christ or Antiochus Epiphanes, and I am convinced that Jesus Christ is the correct interpretation.

During the prophetic period of 490 years, Daniel predicted in 9:24 the following events would be carried out by “the Messiah the Prince” of 9:25.

(1) Messiah finishes believer’s condemning transgression against God.

(2) Messiah ends believer’s condemning sins against God.

(3) Messiah completes believer’s reconciliation to God for iniquity.

(4) Messiah brings in everlasting righteousness.

(5) Daniel’s vision of 9:22-24, and its prophecies, would be completed as the 490 years ended at Messiah’ s Second Advent.

(6) The Messiah’s anointing would end the period of 490 years.

Four of these events have already been fulfilled by Messiah the Prince, Jesus Christ, and the last two will be completed at his Second Advent. These events, and Scriptures associated with their fulfillment follow:

(1) Messiah finishes believer’s condemning transgression against God.

John 19:30 + Isaiah 53:12 – When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

[12] Therefore will I divide him a portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors.

(2) Messiah ends believer’s condemning sins against God.

I Peter 2:24 + Isaiah 53:10 – Who his own self bare our sins in his own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed. [10] Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin, he shall see his seed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in his hand.

(3) Messiah completes believer’s reconciliation to God for iniquity.

II Corinthians 5:19 + Isaiah 53:11 – To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. [11] He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.

(4) Messiah brings in everlasting righteousness for believers.

Romans 4:3-8 + Isaiah 55:3-5 – For what saith the scripture

? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

[4] Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

[5] But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

[6] Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works, [7] Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered. [8] Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin. [3] Incline your ear, and come unto me: hear, and your soul shall live; and I will make an everlasting covenant with you, even the sure mercies of David.

[4] Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. [5] Behold, thou shalt call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee because of the Lord thy God, and for the Holy One of Israel; for he hath glorified thee.

(5) Daniel’s vision of 9:22-24 will be completed as the 490 years end at Messiah’s Second Advent.

Daniel 12:1-4,8-10 + Revelation 11:15,18 & 16:16,17 – And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book. [2] And many of them that sleep in the dust of the earth shall awake, some to everlasting life, and some to shame and everlasting contempt. [3] And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness of the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.

[4] But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. [8] And I heard, but I understood not: then said I, O my Lord, what shall be the end of these things

? [9] And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end. [10] Many shall be purified, and made white, and tried; but the wicked shall do wickedly: and none of the wicked shall understand; but the wise shall understand. [15] And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever

and ever. [18] And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

[16] And he gathered them together into a place called in the Hebrew tongue Armageddon. [17] And the seventh angel poured out his vial into the air; and there came a great voice out of

the temple of heaven, from the throne, saying, It is done.

(6) The anointing of the Messiah, the most Holy One, ends the period of 490 years.

Ezekiel 39:7,9 – So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. [8] Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord God; this is the day whereof I have spoken. [28] Then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there. [29] Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God.

(7) And this is the anointing of the Holy of Holies by the most Holy Anointed One, Jesus Christ, as he enters the Millennial Temple.

Ezekiel 43:1-7 – Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east: [2] And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory. [3] And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city: and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face. [4] And the glory of the Lord came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east. [5] So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house. [6] And I heard him speaking unto me out of the house; and the man stood by me. [7] And he said unto me, Son of man, the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I will dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever, and my holy name, shall the house of Israel no more defile, neither they, nor their kings, by their whoredom, nor by the carcases of their kings in their high places.
