I have contended for 34 years that the Middle East war is inevitable and that it will be conventional, not nuclear.

The primary purpose of having nuclear weapons is to prevent nations having them not to launch theirs against you. If a nation does not have them they are at the mercy of all who do. The fear of Iran developing nuclear weapons has never been of any concern to me, nor has the outbreak of an inevitable conventional war in the Middle East.

I look forward with great anticipation of the fulfillment of prophecy by its beginning, and of the coming of Messiah’s Second Advent, which ends it at Armageddon. It is not a death wish, it is quite the contrary – It’s the beginning of a great millennial life

for all believers on this present earth in new bodies. My attitude toward all the worry induced by all the trouble generated by nukes, war, politics, and financial crisis is really quite simple, and more than adequately calmed by the words of Jesus to his disciples in a time when they were troubled.

These words have been sufficient to carry me through Vietnam and all the other crisis periods in my life.

Mark 6:50-52 – For they all saw him, and were troubled.

And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid.

[51] And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered.

[52] For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened.

These are the words of Jesus which have been guiding my life for a very long time, and they are available for all believers:

BE OF GOOD CHEER: IT IS I; BE NOT AFRAID.

Having Mark’s account of this event, I have considered the miracle of the loaves, and believe anyone who could perform this act and calm the winds of the sea, doesn’t want me to be troubled about nukes and the next Middle East war. He does want me to be concerned about my day to day life lived by faith, while seeking the kingdom of God in the midst of the evil faced each day by his grace.

Israeli has 3-6 months to hit Iran’s nuclear sites if Moscow sells Tehran S-300 systems

Russian military experts calculate that the window for an Israeli attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities will shrink to 3-6 months if Moscow sells Iran (and Syria) the sophisticated S-300 system for guarding those sites against air, missile or cruise missile attack. DEBKAfile’s Moscow sources report that Israeli prime minister Ehud Olmert failed in the key missions of his Moscow trip to persuade Russian leaders to discuss Tehran’s nuclear weapons program and to refrain from selling this advanced weapon to Iran and Syria.

President Dmitiry Medvedev’s bureau issued a noncommittal statement Tuesday, Oct. 7, saying that his talks with Olmert were “an exchange of opinion on threats, including terrorism and nonproliferation.” The word “nuclear” was avoided.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov, who the prime minister met Monday, trotted out the standard Russia claim that Moscow had no definite information that Iran is developing a nuclear weapon and is against tougher sanctions.

Prime minister Vladimir Putin was unable to see him.

Moscow’s mainstream media came out Tuesday with a rerun of the statement made on Sept.

17 by Anatoly Isaikin, director of the Russian arms exports agency Rosoboronexport, that his firm is in advanced negotiations with Tehran for the sale of the S-300 missiles. However, on Monday, the same firm disowned knowledge of these missiles having been shipped to Iran, although negotiations for their sale were not mentioned.

Konstantin Makiyenko, from the center for strategic and technological analysis think tank in the Russian capital, said these utterances put Israel on notice to stop selling arms to Georgia and training its army.

Moscow does not conceal its intention of selling S-300 missiles to Syria.

A Russian military expert commented: “Our warships if based in Syrian ports will need to be encircled by missile batteries capable of guarding them against air and missile attack.”

According to Russian experts, the system is capable of pinpointing 100 targets and simultaneously intercepting 12 at a distance of 120 km.

Our Russian sources made a point of stressing that Moscow is not subject to embargoes on its foreign arms sales or any international restrictions on supplying defensive weapons to other nations.

We have seen many changes in this great nation which have been brought about by left wing activists. As kids, we used to say the Pledge of Allegiance. Now, it’s being attacked in the courts. We used to say a prayer in the morning before school or at football games.

Socialists in America have deemed that “offensive” and the practice has all but disappeared.

Christmas displays honoring the birth of Christ trigger convulsions by the Left, who say that we shouldn’t make people feel “uncomfortable” with our manger scenes.

Now, we can’t even say what we want to say in public because not only will the thought police be on patrol, but, using a recent event in Florida as an example, saying “Hussein Obama” in public might just get you a visit from the FBI. Just ask Florida’s Lee County Sheriff Mike Scott who is under fire — and investigation — for referring to Obama at a campaign rally by his — gasp — full name. What is going on with America?

At a rally in Estero, Florida on Monday for Gov. Sarah Palin, one of the pre-rally speakers was Sheriff Scott. Now, anyone who has been to a political rally knows that the job of the warm-up speakers is to do exactly as the name implies: warm-up the audience.

Whether the audience is cheering wildly or booing loudly, the pre-rally speakers are there to wake them up and get them going.

So… according to ABC News, Sheriff Scott stepped to the podium and said, “On November 4, let’s leave Barack Hussein Obama wondering what happened.”

Oh, the shock of it all! Speaking someone’s full legal name in public! When asked about the “incident,” Sheriff Scott responded by saying:

“I absolutely, unequivocally don’t regret saying it,” Scott told the News-Press on Monday. “In order to be a speaker at this event, I had to give my full name — Michael Joseph Scott — to the Secret Service, even though I’m the sheriff of Lee County.

So why would I apologize

? Is there some kind of double standard here where I have to give my full name, but I can’t use his?”

“Unless he changed his name, my position hasn’t changed,” said Scott of Obama. “It seems very clear to me that people have one of three stances on this thing: There are those who dislike it, there are those who like it, and there are those who think it’s a whole big deal about nothing, which is where I stand.”

As noted in the Cape Coral Daily Breeze, the Palin campaign responded by issuing the following statement:

“We do not condone this inappropriate rhetoric which distracts from the real questions of judgment, character and experience that voters will base their decisions on this November.”

Fair enough. If Palin or anyone else wants to say the usage of Barack Hussein Obama is inappropriate, he or she has a right to do so. But Sheriff Scott also has a right to say what he wants to say without fear of reprisal by the government.

However, according to a local Florida NBC affiliate, Sheriff Scott’s remark has now earned him an investigation by the federal government.

The NBC station reports that officials with the U.S. Office of Special Counsel have started an investigation of the Sheriff under the question of “did he use his position as sheriff to influence an election

? If so, he could be in violation of a federal election law called the Hatch Act.” The basis the Feds are using is whether Scott was campaigning while on duty and in uniform.

Sheriff Scott responded to the NBC story with the following statement:

“I am on duty 24/7 and 365 whether in or out of uniform. Like every other elected official, I am aware of from President to Governor

to State Representatives, etc.

We engage in political activities whether for ourselves as candidates or for others. As of this writing, I am unaware of having done anything to generate all this attention other than using the senator’s full name.”

The question is this… If Sheriff Scott had not said “Barack Hussein Obama,” do you really think he would now be under investigation? If you answered “no,” then that should send a shiver down your spine, because it means that the government is imposing pressure and creating a public example of Scott for simply saying someone’s name.

Whether the investigation leads to charges or legal action is not the point. The point is that government intimidation is being brought to bear for someone exercising his first amendment right to free speech. This is wrong, regardless of whether you think his usage of Barack Hussein Obama was appropriate or not.

This is still America, isn’t it?

(IsraelNN.com) The Christian missionary organization “Jews for Jesus” is specifically targeting Jews in the northern Israeli town of Kiryat Shmona on Tuesday, according to an internal proselytizing directive acquired by Israel National News.

The memo informs the reader that on Tuesday the group is “beginning to send a team everyday to Keryat Shmoneh (a small town in the north) where a Rabbi and his students have been causing trouble…”

‘Each Number Represents a Person’
According to the memo, which was sent to the group’s supporters in Israel and abroad, “The first full week of the campaign is over…. Please remember that each number represents a person and these serve for our encouragement….”

The memo goes on to boast that the missionaries “handed out 21,700 gospel tracts” and “have contact information of 995 Jewish people who told us that they want to know more about Jesus.”

Moreover, the group proudly proclaimed that it succeeded in “leading 18 Jewish people and 3 Gentiles to Y’Shua” – the organization’s Hebraicized name for Jesus, with its double play on the Hebrew word for “salvation.”

‘Aggressive Effort to Evangelize in the Holy Land’

Anti-missionary activist and Israel National Radio talk show host Rabbi Tovia Singer warns that “as a result of their multi-million dollar campaign, many Jews have been affected by their aggressive effort to evangelize in the Holy Land.” In 2006, Rabbi Singer made a 20-part counter-missionary series available for free on his website. He is an author of the book and accompanying audio CD series Let’s Get Biblical, as well as the founder and director of the anti-missionary organization “Outreach Judaism.”

Rabbi Singer says that close to 20,000 Jews have been persuaded by evangelical missionaries in Israel to abandon their faith

and convert to Christianity since 1970.

The so-called “Jews for Jesus” appellation, he adds, is really a clever misnomer used by missionaries to mislead Jews into thinking they will still be practicing their Judaism even if they believe in Jesus.

“Nothing could be further from the truth,” he adds.

“It’s a Baptist mission to the Jews,” explains Singer. “The group is an arm of the Baptist church, plain and simple, devoted to converting Jews to Christianity.” Although it is one of the more aggressive evangelical organizations, the group — which Singer estimates has approximately two thousand volunteers in Israel alone — is only one of more than a thousand Christian efforts to convert the Jews.

And more are on the way.

“Thousands are coming in the next couple of weeks for Sukkot,” Singer says, “for a big Christian evangelical parade.

Each one is willing to volunteer in the effort to lead a Jew away from his faith.”

Protests get Jews for Jesus radio ad pulled in the North

A wave of irate protest silenced a Jews for Jesus radio campaign last week on a local radio station in the North.

It took just a few hours for Kol Rega, which broadcasts to the Galilee and northern valleys, to cave in to pressure from listeners who phoned in to demand that the Jews for Jesus campaign be taken off the air.

“Shortly after we broadcast it, we received dozens of angry phone calls from listeners telling us they were hurt by the crudeness of the ad,” said Haim Hecht, manager of Kol Rega. “The truth is that even before it hurt my listeners the ad hurt me. It was simply too aggressive and blatantly missionary.”

The slogan of the radio campaign is “Yeshu [a derogatory form of Jesus] equals Yeshua [accent on penultimate syllable] equals yeshua [accent on the last syllable].”

Yeshu as a reference to Jesus appears in the Talmud; it is an acronym for “May his name and memory be wiped out” (yemach shmo vezichro). Yeshua is Jesus in Hebrew. Yeshua, with an accent on the last syllable, means redemption.

In three different versions of the ad, ethnically identifiable Israeli Jewish voices – one Russian, one Moroccan and one haredi Ashkenazi – express surprise at being told that Jesus is equivalent to redemption.

At the end of the ad a voice-over says, “Confused? Call for more information,” and provides a phone number.

Dan Sered, head of Jews for Jesus in Israel, said in response, “All we are trying to do is share our faith.

We just want to provide Israelis with an opportunity to know that Jesus died for our sins and rose on the third day. Most Israelis have never gotten the chance to hear about Jesus.

If they do not want to hear that is fine.

But if they are interested, why shouldn’t they be given the opportunity?”

Sered said a minority of Orthodox Jews in Israel was preventing the secular majority from exercising their right to freedom of religion, speech and faith.

“Jews who believe Jesus is the messiah are a minority in Israel, but so are the Orthodox,” he said. “Why should they be allowed to prevent secular Israelis from hearing Jesus’s message of love and peace?”

The radio ad is part of larger campaign, directly primarily at the North, that includes full-page ads in the weekend editions of Ma’ariv and Yisrael Hayom, two Hebrew dailies.

In addition, Jews for Jesus activists sporting T-shirts and passing out literature have been active in recent days in the North, including Nahariya, Kiryat Shmona and the Haifa area.

According to members of Jews for Jesus, the municipalities of Tiberias and Karmiel each took down a large-screen Jews-for-Jesus ad located at prominent intersections.

Yoel Ben-David, a Jews for Jesus activist, said Orthodox Jews from different streams have threatened him and his peers, pushed them and, in Kiryat Shmona, removed the air from a car tire.

Kiryat Shmona Chief Rabbi Tzfania Drori said he had heard rumors about the car tire. “That is probably one of the mildest reactions imaginable in response to aggressive missionary activity pursued by these Jews for Yeshu,” he said.

“I believe we have a right to prevent these people from entering our town and promulgating New Testaments and missionary literature; it is tantamount to a woman performing a striptease in the middle of a public place,” Drori, who also heads a yeshiva in Kiryat Shmona, said.

He said a group of his students had followed the Jews for Jesus group around the town, heckling them and preventing them distributing their literature.

Drori said he was concerned the Jews for Jesus activists, who he said came from Scandinavian countries, would have sway with immigrants from the former Soviet Union, who

have weaker ties to their Jewish roots.

The three spirits of devils carry the message of a strong delusion to all the world from Satan’s Seat that Satan began among the Arab’s from a man he raised up named Muhammad. It is the greatest corruption of the Old and New Testaments ever presented to mankind since the completion of the New Testament, and is believed by some one-fifth of the world’s population. It is the strong delusion referred to by Paul that God allows the bulk of all remaining mankind to believe because they have utterly rejected his truth. It is the doctrine of the Wicked One.

Palestinian leader, Islamist chief discuss Temple Mount takeover

Conspirators seek to solidify control over Judaism’s holiest site

JERUSALEM – Meeting with an Islamist leader here, the Palestinian Authority’s chief negotiator this past weekend discussed ways to solidify Islamic control over the Temple Mount and block Jews from purchasing real estate in areas surrounding the holy site, according to a source involved in the talks.

The Palestinian Maan news agency quoted chief Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qurei as saying there can be no agreement with Israel unless it forfeits Jerusalem, and that postponing an agreement on the issue will only provide the Jewish state more time to “Judaize” the city.

“The Palestinian Authority will not negotiate and will not sign on any agreement with Israel that does not include Jerusalem,” Qurei reportedly said during a meeting with Raed Salah, chief of the Islamic Movement in Israel, Sheikh Raed Salah, whose organization seeks for Islam to takeover the Temple Mount.

“The Palestinian leadership is decisive (in its stance) not to negotiate and conclude matters with the Israelis without Jerusalem,” Queri said. “The postponement of the discussion of this issue is aimed at continuing the Israeli plans to Judaize the holy city, especially the Al-Aksa mosque.”

A source involved in the talks told WND that Queri and Salah also discussed ways to solidify PA control over the Mount and to purchase strategic real estate surrounding the holy site.

The sources said Queri and Salah also discussed ways for the PA to compete with Jordan for more control over the Temple Mount.

Jordan continues to maintain a major influence over the Temple Mount.

Sheik Azzam Khateeb, who was installed in February 2007 as the new manager of the Waqf, is known to be close to the Jordanian monarchy. The previous Waqf manager, Sheik Adnon Husseini, was loyal to Palestinian Authority although toward the end of his rein, he seemed to be warming to Jordan.

In a gesture to Jordan, in January 2006, Israel granted Jordan permission to replace the main podium in the Al Aqsa Mosque from which Islamic preachers deliver their sermons.

The podium, which was partially funded by Saudi Arabia, is considered one of the most important stands in the Muslim world. Muslims now believe it marks the “exact spot” Muhammad went up to heaven to receive revelations from Allah.

The new stand bears the emblem of the Jordanian kingdom. It replaced a 1,000-year-old podium believed to have been shipped to Jerusalem by the Islamic conqueror Saladin.

That stand was destroyed in 1969, when an Australian tourist set fire to the Al Aqsa Mosque.

In recent years, Jordan quietly has been purchasing real estate surrounding the Temple Mount in Jerusalem in hopes of gaining more control over the area accessing the holy site, according to Palestinian and Israeli officials speaking to WND.

The officials disclosed the Jordanian kingdom in 2006 and 2007 used shell companies to purchase several apartments and shops located at key peripheral sections of the Temple Mount. The shell companies at times presented themselves as acting on behalf of the Waqf custodians of the Temple Mount, according to in formation

obtained.

The officials said Jordan also set up a commission to use the shell companies to petition mostly Arab landowners adjacent to eastern sections of the Temple Mount to sell their properties. They said profits from sales at any purchased shops would be reinvested to buy more real estate near the Mount and in eastern Jerusalem neighborhoods.

The report the PA is looking to purchase real estate near the Mount follows a WND exclusive article in January quoting informed sources stating the PA recently established an intelligence apparatus in Jerusalem to clamp down on Israeli Arabs selling property to Jews in strategic areas of the city.

A contingent of Jewish groups, including an organization called Ateret Kohanim, work to strengthen the Jewish presence in Jerusalem by purchasing properties from Arabs, primarily in eastern neighborhoods, including in Jerusalem’s Old City.

Some of the purchased properties were formerly Jewish until Jews fled during Arab riots in the early 1900s.

The Temple Mount is the holiest site in Judaism. The First Jewish Temple was built there by King Solomon in the 10th century B.C. It was destroyed by the Babylonians in 586 B.C. The Second Temple was rebuilt in 515 B.C. after Jerusalem was freed from Babylonian captivity. That temple was destroyed by the Roman Empire in A.D. 70. Each temple stood for a period of about four centuries.

The Jewish Temple was the center of religious Jewish worship. It housed the Holy of Holies, which contained the Ark of the Covenant and was said to be the area upon which God’s shechina or “presence” dwelt. All Jewish holidays centered on worship at the Temple. The Jewish Temple served as the primary location for the offering of sacrifices and was the main gathering place for the Jewish people.

According to the Talmud, the world was created from the foundation stone of the Temple Mount.

The site is believed to be the biblical Mount Moriah, the location where Abraham fulfilled God’s test to see if he would be willing to sacrifice his son Isaac.

Jewish tradition holds Mashiach, or the Jewish Messiah, will return and rebuild the third and final Temple on the Mount in Jerusalem.

The Kotel, or Western Wall, is the one part of the Temple Mount that survived the destruction of the Second Temple by the Romans and stands today in Jerusalem.

Throughout all notorious Jewish exiles, thorough documentation shows the Jews never gave up their hope of returning to Jerusalem and re-establishing their Temple. To this day Jews worldwide pray facing the Western Wall, while Muslims turn their backs away from the Temple Mount and pray toward Mecca.

The Al Aqsa Mosque was constructed around A.D. 709 to serve as a shrine near another shrine, the Dome of the Rock, which was built by an Islamic caliph.

About 100 years ago, the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem became associated with the place Muslims came to believe Muhammad ascended to heaven. Jerusalem, however, is not mentioned in the Quran.

Islamic tradition states Muhammad took a journey in a single night from “a sacred mosque” – believed to be in Mecca in southern Saudi Arabia – to “the farthest mosque,” and from a rock there ascended to heaven to receive revelations from Allah that became part of the Quran.

Palestinians today claim exclusivity over the Temple Mount, and Palestinian leaders routinely deny Jewish historic connection to the site, but historically, Muslims did not claim the Al Aqsa Mosque as their third holiest site and admitted the Jewish Temples existed.

According to research by Israeli author Shmuel Berkovits, Islam previously disregarded Jerusalem.

He points out in his book “How Dreadful Is this Place!” that Muhammad was said to loathe Jerusalem and what it stood for.

Berkovits wrote that Muhammad made a point of eliminating pagan sites of worship, and sanctifying only one place – the Kaaba in Mecca – to signify the unity of God.

As late as the 14th century, Islamic scholar Taqi al-Din Ibn Taymiyya, whose writings influenced the Wahhabi movement in Arabia, ruled that sacred Islamic sites are to be found only in the Arabian Peninsula, and that “in Jerusalem, there is not a place one calls sacred, and the same holds true for the tombs of Hebron.”

It wasn’t until the late 19th century – incidentally when Jews started immigrating to Palestine – that some Muslim scholars began claiming Muhammad tied his horse to the Western Wall and associated Muhammad’s purported night journey with the Temple Mount.

A guide to the Temple Mount by the Supreme Muslim Council in Jerusalem published in 1925 listed the Mount as the site of Solomon’s Temple. The Temple Institute acquired a copy of the official 1925 “Guide Book to Al-Haram Al-Sharif,” which states on page 4, “Its identity with the site of Solomon’s Temple is beyond dispute. This, too, is the spot, according to universal belief, on which ‘David built there an altar unto the Lord.'”

On Yom Kippur in 1973 the Islamic forces took full advantage of the Holy Day, during which everything is shut down, and many military men and women are on leave. The Islamic forces drove into Israel territory on the first two days and the West cried for a truce, but when Israel’s forces turned the tide and began to head into Islamic territories, Russia, China, and Israel’s foes began to scream for a truce.

Next time, the Islamic forces will lure Israel into a counterattack mouse trap in southern Lebanon, and then push about 1.9 million of the Jewish population into the Negev Wilderness. Because Russia, China, and the Islamic nations know the military price they would pay in trying to take the Negev, they will cry truce with the rest of the world, and Israel will stay surrounded on three borders in the Negev for some three and one-half years.

The Yom Kippur War

In 1971, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat raised the possibility of signing an agreement with Israel, provided that all the occupied territories were returned by the Israelis. No progress toward peace was made, however, so, the follo wing

year, Sadat said war was inevitable and he was prepared to sacrifice one million soldiers in the showdown with Israel. His threat did not materialize that year.

Throughout 1972, and for much of 1973, Sadat threatened war unless the United States forced Israel to accept his interpretation of Resolution 242-total Israeli withdrawal from territories taken in 1967.

Simultaneously, the Egyptian leader carried on a diplomatic offensive among European and African states to win support for his cause. He appealed to the Soviets to bring pressure on the United States and to provide Egypt with more offensive weapons to cross the Suez Canal. The Soviet Union was more interested in maintaining the appearance of detente with the United States than in confrontation in the Middle East; therefore, it rejected Sadat’s demands. Sadat’s response was to abruptly expel approximately 20,000 Soviet advisers from Egypt.

In an April 1973 interview, Sadat again warned he would renew the

war. But it was the same threat he had made in 1971 and 1972, and most observers remained skeptical.

The War Begins

On October 6, 1973 — Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar — Egypt and Syria opened a coordinated surprise attack against Israel. The equivalent of the total forces of NATO in Europe were mobilized on Israel’s borders.

On the Golan Heights, approximately 180 Israeli tanks faced an onslaught of 1,400 Syrian tanks. Along the Suez Canal, 436 Israeli defenders were attacked by 80,000 Egyptians

At least nine Arab states, including four non-Middle Eastern nations, actively aided the Egyptian-Syrian war effort.

A few months before the Yom Kippur War, Iraq transferred a squadron of Hunter jets to Egypt. During the war, an Iraqi division of some 18,000 men and several hundred tanks was deployed in the central Golan and participated in the October 16 attack against Israeli positions. Iraqi MiGs began operating over the Golan Heights as early as October 8, the third day of the war.

Besides serving as financial underwriters, Saudi Arabia and Kuwait committed men to battle. A Saudi brigade of approximately 3,000 troops was dispatched to Syria, where it participated in fighting along the approaches to Damascus. Also, violating Paris’s ban on the transfer of French-made weapons, Libya sent Mirage fighters to Egypt (from 1971-¬1973, President Muammar Qaddafi gave Cairo more than $1 billion in aid to rearm Egypt and to pay the Soviets for weapons delivered).

Other North African countries responded to Arab and Soviet calls to aid the front¬line states. Algeria sent three aircraft squadrons of fighters and bombers, an armored brigade and 150 tanks. Approximately 1,000-2,000 Tunisian soldiers were positioned in the Nile Delta.

Sudan stationed 3,500 troops in southern Egypt, and Morocco sent three brigades to the front lines, including 2,500 men to Syria.

Lebanese radar units were used by Syrian air defense forces. Lebanon also allowed Palestinian terrorists to shell Israeli civilian settlements from its territory.

Palestinians fought on the Southern Front with the Egyptians and Kuwaitis.

The least enthusiastic participant in the October fighting was probably Jordan’s King Hussein, who apparently had been kept uninformed of Egyptian and Syrian war plans. But Hussein did send two of his best units — the 40th and 60th Armored Brigades — to Syria. This force took positions in the southern sector, defending the main Amman-Damascus route and attacking Israeli positions along the Kuneitra-Sassa road on October 16.

Three Jordanian artillery batteries also participated in the assault, carried out by nearly 100 tanks.

Israel Recovers

Thrown onto the defensive during the first two days of fighting, Israel mobilized its reserves and eventually repulsed the invaders and carried the war deep into Syria and Egypt. The Arab states were swiftly re-supplied by sea and air from the Soviet Union, which rejected U.S. efforts to work toward an immediate cease¬fire. As a result, the United States belatedly began its own airlift to Israel. Two weeks later, Egypt was saved from a disastrous defeat by the UN Security Council, which had failed to act while the tide was in the Arabs’ favor.

The Soviet Union showed no interest in initiating peacemaking efforts while it looked like the Arabs might win. The same was true for UN Secretary-General Kurt Waldheim. (Waldheim’s service with a World War II German army unit guilty of war crimes in the Balkans resulted in his being barred from entering the United States after his election as President of Austria).

On October 22, the Security Council adopted Resolution 338 calling for “all parties to the present fighting to cease all firing and terminate all military activity immediately.” The vote came on the day that Israeli forces cut off and isolated the Egyptian Third Army and were in a position to destroy it.

Despite the Israel Defense Forces’ ultimate success on the battlefield, the war was considered a diplomatic and military failure.

A total of 2,688 soldiers were killed and 7,250 were wounded.

Syria moved tank units up to the Lebanese Beqaa Valley border Tuesday, Oct.

7. DEBKAfile’s military sources report that this is Damascus’ second troop movement on the Lebanese border. For three weeks, commando units have been poised on the North Lebanese border.

In the first deployment, Syrian tanks and armored vehicles were kept some 3-10 km to

the rear of frontline commando forces. In the second, which is much closer to the Israeli border, armor and tanks have been deployed at the front.

These military movements sent Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak on an unannounced visit Tuesday to check the state of readiness of the IDF’s dispositions on the Syrian and Lebanese border barriers. He cautioned the outpost commanders to exercise maximum vigilance in the coming days. The border seems quiet, he said, but officers must to take care never to permit a repeat of the Yom Kippur exactly 35 years ago when Israel was caught napping by the Syrian invasion.

Our sources report that Washington, Jerusalem and Beirut are bracing for the possibility that Damascus will seize the moment of the total shutdown in Israel for 25 hours from Wednesday afternoon, Oct.

8, to Thursday night, Oct.

9, for Yom Kippur (Day of Atonement) and launch its military forces against northern Lebanon or the Golan.
