Economic rescue ‘to cost billions’

The US treasury secretary has said rescuing the troubled US financial sector will cost “hundreds of billions” of dollars.

Henry Paulson made the remarks on Friday after Asian and European markets soared, and the New York Stock Exchange opened high on reports of a US plan to rescue banks from bad debts.

Paulson warned that bold steps were still need to confront the financial crisis.

“This morning we have taken powerful steps to ensure confidence in the US markets. Despite these steps, more is needed.

We must take further steps to address the root causes,” he said.

“This needs to be big enough to make a real difference and get at the heart of the problem.”

Paulson said that officials from the administration of George Bush, the US president, Congress and the Federal Reserve were working together on a number of plans to restore confidence in the markets.

“We are going to be coming to them [Congress] with a proposed legislative package and working with them to flesh out the details through the weekend and we’re going to be asking them to take action on legislation next week,” he said.

Regulation

Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the US house of representatives, on Friday said Congress was “committed to quick, bipartisan action” on legislation to rescue Wall Street.

Bush, speaking at the White House after Paulson, said government intervention in the financial markets was essential and the risk “of not acting would be far higher”.

“These measures will require us to put a significant amount of taxpayer dollars on the line. This action does entail risk, but we expect that this money will eventually be paid back,” he said.

Financial analysts have been calling on the US to take action to ease the crisis.

William Browder, CEO of the investment group Hermitage Capital Management, told Al Jazeera: “It is a problem of global proportions and it is not just happening in one country.

I suspect that this is not going to be the last big action that the regulators take.”

Al Jazeera’s John Terret, reporting from New York, said the news would bring confidence back to the markets.

“The government is moving now and taking the lead in all this, and that is going to shore up the confidence that has been lacking,” he said. “This day might go down in history as the beginning of the end of the problem.”

Soaring markets

World stocks soared on Friday amid reports that the US government might buy up banks’ bad debts.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index of top European shares jumped six per cent, or 1,127 points, in early trade on Friday following news the UK had imposed a ban on the short-selling of stocks and the US was considering a similar move.

ares made the biggest gains with top names soaring by nearly a third in Britain.

In Asia, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index rocketed to close 9.6 per cent higher, while Japan’s benchmark Nikkei ended up 3.8 per cent on Friday after sliding 2.2 per cent a day earlier to close at its lowest level in more than three years.

Stock markets in Taiwan, South Korea, Singapore, Malaysia and Australia were also markedly higher.

In Sydney, Australian investment bank Macquarie Group saw its stock surge by as much as 51 per cent, its biggest one-day gain on record.

Concerted effort

The upswing also followed a co-ordinated drive by central banks around the world to release $180bn to alleviate any credit crunch.

The move by the Bank of Canada, the Bank of England, the European Central Bank, the US Federal Reserve, the Bank of Japan and the Swiss National Bank is the fourth such concerted effort since the start of the credit crisis last year.

In Shanghai, China’s main stock index surged 9.5 per cent – it’s biggest one-day percentage gain ever.

Chinese investors got an additional boost from a government decision to eliminate a tax on share purchases and government plans to use an investment fund to buy shares in three major banks.

“I knew it would rise, but didn’t expect it to jump so high,” Zhao Yueming, a dealer at Cinda Securities, told the Associated Press.

“China’s stock market is always crazy beyond people’s expectations.”

The bounce in Asia comes after a 410-point overnight gain on Wall Street following a late surge in the trading day on news that the US government might set up a central facility to take on banks’ bad debts.

It was the Dow’s biggest percentage point gain since October 2002 but still left the index down about 400 points for the week after routs on Monday and Wednesday.

Russia Eyes Naval Bases in Syria

Russia is stepping up its rhetoric about redeploying its Black Sea Fleet to the Mediterranean if Ukraine pushes ahead with plans to evict it from its home port base of Sevastopol in the Crimea. “New bases in the Mediterranean Sea could make up for the departure,” Rear Adm.

Andrei Baranov stated Monday. The most likely Mediterranean base for the Black Sea Fleet would be Tartus in Syria, which served as a maintenance port for the old Soviet navy during the Cold War.

The RIA Novosti news agency said that “about 10 Russian warships and three floating piers” were already based at Tartus and Russian engineers and construction crews are at work enlarging the naval base.

A new pier for the use of Russian warships was also being constructed at nearby Latakia. If Russia were to base significant naval forces in Syria, that could have the effect of deterring or limiting Israel’s abil ity to strike at targets in Syria because

Andrei Baranov’s disclosure that 10 Russian warships are already anchored at the Syrian port of Tartus, DEBKAfile’s military sources report.

Moscow and Damascus have worked fast to put in place the agreement reached in Moscow on Sept. 12 by Russian navy commander, Adm. Vladimir Wysotsky and Syrian naval commander Gen.

Taleb al-Barri to provide the Russian fleet with a long-term base at Syrian ports.

Israel was not aware that this many vessels were involved in the deal.

What most worries Israeli military leaders is an earlier

announcement by Adm.

Wysotsky that Russia’s Mediterranean assets would subjected to its Black Sea fleet command, thereby placing Russia’s warships near Israel’s shores at the service of Moscow’s contest against the US and NATO in the Caucasian.

It is feared that Israel will be dragged into another cold war.

Rear Adm. Baranov disclosed that the warships in Tartus had brought engineering crews to widen and dredge the harbor to accommodate additional, fleet vessels. The crews were also working on expanding Latakia, another Syrian port, possibly for aircraft carriers or guided missile cruisers.

The Russians are making no secret of their intention of using their naval presence in Syrian ports as a deterrent to a possible Israeli air strike against Syria.

China paper urges new currency order after “financial tsunami”

BEIJING (Reuters) – Threatened by a “financial tsunami,” the world must consider building a financial order no longer dependent on the United States, a leading Chinese state newspaper said on Wednesday.

The commentary in the overseas edition of the People’s Daily said the collapse of Lehman Brothers Holdings Inc (LEH.P: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) “may augur an even larger impending global ‘financial tsunami’.”

The People’s Daily is the official newspaper of China’s ruling Communist Party, and the overseas edition is a smaller circulation offshoot of the main paper.

Its pronouncements do not necessarily directly reflect leadership views, but this commentary by a professor at Shanghai’s Tongji University suggested considerable official alarm at the strains buckling world financial markets.

China’s central bank earlier this week cut its lending rate for the first time in six years, a move analysts said was aimed at bolstering the economy and the battered stock market.

“The eruption of the U.S. sub-prime crisis has exposed massive loopholes in the United States’ financial oversight and supervision,” writes the commentator, Shi Jianxun.

“The world urgently needs to create a diversified currency and financial system and fair and just financial order that is not dependent on the United States.”

But Vice Premier Wang Qishan, on a visit to the United States, told U.S. trade officials in a meeting on Tuesday that China and the United States needed to maintain close economic ties with global markets going through such turbulence.

“The Chinese government is well aware of the fact that the United States, which is the world’s largest developed country, and China, which is the world’s largest developing country, should have constructive and cooperative economic and trade relations,” he said.

China is a major buyer of U.S. Treasury bonds, and through its sovereign wealth fund it has taken stakes in two large U.S. financial institutions.

In July 2005, China revalued the yuan and freed it from a dollar peg to float within managed bands. But the yuan and China’s trade remains tightly linked to the fortunes of the dollar.

The commentary suggested China must brace for grave economic fallout and look to alternatives, saying the crisis brings to mind

the Great Depression of the 1930s.

“Lehman Brothers’ announced bankruptcy will not only have a domino effect on the global financial world, it will bring a shock to the world economy,” the front-page comment stated.

The American public in general, as well as the Christians among them, are sick and tired of hearing about war, and many stick their heads in the sand at the very mention of it, hoping that ignoring it may make it go away like it does for children when they

stick their heads under the cover at night. Unfortunately, war with nations led by people like those in the Middle East is inevitable, but I do realize why my constant talk of it does turn people off. I know it is coming soon, and my guess is that it will start at some point in time between 2010 and 2015. So what is my prime motive in repeating this warning over and over again? Can we stop this war from eventually happening

? Absolutely not! My motive has always been to encourage Christians to wake up and realize we are not far away from the fulfillment of I Thessalonians 5:3-8! We cannot stop its fulfillment no matter how much diplomacy we employ with the nations of this planet! Nor can we prevent it by military action! It is a “done deal” God said will happen! So what is my motivation in running this website? It is simply to advise lost men and women to come to the Lord for salvation before all this begins, and for those who already have to draw closer to God week by week as the day approaches. There is a great storm building in the Euphrates River Valley from its origin in Turkey as it flows by Syria, through Iraq, by Iran, and into the Persian Gulf.

Get spiritually ready for it! It is time for the lost to call upon Jesus to save their souls, and a time for the saved to ask Jesus to convert (strengthen) their saved souls as they live for him.

Ahmadinejad: Israel perpetrating holocaust on the Palestinians

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Thursday that Israel was perpetrating a holocaust on the Palestinian people.

Speaking to reporters, Ahmadinejad also repeated previous anti-Israel comments, calling the Holocaust by Nazi Germany a “fake.”

The Iranian President stated that the Jewish state wouldn’t survive in any form.

He smirked at a former mantra of the Israeli right of a “Greater” Israel that would include occupied Palestinian territories, saying that while “some say the idea of Greater Israel has expired, I say the idea of a Lesser Israel has expired, too.”

Earlier on Thursday, the Iranian president downplayed the possibility of an IAF strike against Iran.

“Israel is in a weak position to launch attacks against any other country,” he was quoted by Press TV as saying.

Ahmadinejad said Iran would defend its territorial integrity if attacked, Press TV reported.

Despite Monday’s International Atomic Energy Agency report saying that Iran had repeatedly blocked a UN investigation into allegations that it tried to make nuclear weapons, Ahmadinejad was also quoted as saying that the IAEA findings had actually confirmed the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear program and that Teheran had cooperated with the UN agency with “full transparency.”

“President Ahmadinejad said the report confirms Iran’s peaceful drive for nuclear energy,” Press TV said.

“He said the report had no negative points about Iran’s nuclear program other than the alleged studies which have no legal basis and are beyond the jurisdiction of the UN nuclear watchdog,” it continued.

Monday’s damning new report claimed that the probe into Iran’s weapons programs was now deadlocked and the findings suggested Iran tried to refit its main long-distance missile to carry a nuclear payload.

Also Thursday, European Union foreign policy Javier Solana said that Russia and China were “quite worried” about the new IAEA findings and that the report “isn’t good for Iran.”

He stopped short of saying that there was support for France’s push for more UN Security Council sanctions against the Islamic Republic. Solana said the UN General Assembly would “analyze” the situation.

He was speaking on the sidelines of a Paris meeting of EU foreign ministers with their counterparts from five central Asian nations.

Israel Is Making a Tactical Military Error

I have long been concerned about Israel’s drifting away from the idea of the next major Middle East war being nuclear, rather than conventional in nature. Israel is continuing to drag her feet in keeping the tank corps up to par with anti-tank m

issile development available to her enemies.

Bye! Bye! Conventional Merkava 4’s and 5’s!

I was rather surprised by some armor decisions made recently by former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is now the Treasury Minister in Ariel Sharon’s Cabinet. He believes Israel faces two threats – The Palestinian terrorist groups, and the weapons of mass destruction that are being developed by Arab states in the Middle East, notably headed by Iran.

Of course, both of these are real threats, but I do not agree with his statement that followed. He does not believe the threat of an invasion by Arab states against Israel on the ground is a feasible reality and, because of this, favors the decommissioning of old war systems, like the Merkava tanks, at an accele rated

rate. Netanyahu attributes great importance to the strategic view, which would provide answers to the Iranian nuclear threat and to other state’s weapons of mass destruction. He favors the continuation of the security fence to its completion, but desires to see the discontinuation of Merkava tank production. If Israel does follow this program, believing they are secure from an outside ground attack at the present, then once they finally get the Palestinians fenced in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, it will give them a sense of “peace and safety” as regards their being overrun from the north. Scripture indicates it will happen.

Without the conventional old war systems, such as the Merkava 3 and the new Merkava 4 tanks, Israel would be much more vulnerable to a conventional attack like the one launched against them from Syria in the 1973 Yom Kipper War. The deterrent to non-conventional weapons, now being developed by the Arab states, lies in the Negev wilderness in the form of nuclear, chemical, and biological warheads on the hundreds of Jericho missiles found there. The mass destruction weapons possessed by Israel in the Negev are more than a sufficient deterrent to cause the Arab states not

to launch theirs against Israel.

Plans to equip IDF tanks with an anti-missile defense system have been
postponed by two years due to budgetary and development snags, defense officials said Monday.

According to the officials, the Trophy system, developed by state-owned
Rafael, would now likely be installed on Merkava Mk4 battle tanks in 2010 and not this year, as was initially announced following the Second Lebanon War.

During the Second Lebanon War in 2006, Hizbullah fired thousands of
anti-tank missiles at Israeli tanks and infantry units, damaging 40 tanks
and killing 30 crew members.

According to a report in Defense News on Monday, tens of millions of dollars had already been invested in the Trophy program over the past eight years and it will take “double that amount” to equip hundreds of tanks in the coming years.

“We hope to start installing several of the systems on tanks in the
beginning of next year,” a top officer in the IDF’s Ground Forces Command told The Jerusalem Post. “The massive fielding though will not happen until sometime in 2010.” Industry sources told the Post that the Defense Ministry was mainly to blame for the delays and that Rafael’ s development of the

system was dependent on the schedule it received from the IDF.

“We cannot work on our own,” one source said. “The Defense Ministry has over the past two years repeatedly changed its schedule of when it wanted to conduct testing and installation and this has affected the development.”

According to the report in Defense News, the Defense Ministry and Rafael only began installing the first systems on Merkava Mk4 tanks in late 2007 for integration

and safety tests, the results of which were poor and required revisions to the ministry-provided specifications.

As a result, the Trophy system was only installed on Merkava Mk4 tanks in February 2008 and underwent a live-fire test just two months ago.

Hizbullah is believed to have today thousands of Soviet-built Sagger, Cornet and Fagot antitank missiles, the French MILAN and the US-built TOW, all supplied by Iran and Syria. These missiles are usually fired by a two- or three-man team.

Some 400 tanks operated inside Lebanon during the war and while dozens were hit by anti-tank missiles, only 20 were actually penetrated. Following the war, the IDF decided to speed up development of an active-protection system for tanks and armored personnel carriers, with officers claiming in late 2006 that tanks would be equipped with the system by 2008.

The Trophy system creates a hemispheric protected zone around armored vehicles such as the Merkava tank. It is designed to detect and track a threat and counter it with a launched projectile that intercepts the anti-tank missile.

Israel Military Industries (IMI) is also developing its own system, called
the Iron Fist.

Claimed to be capable of neutralizing all anti-tank threats,
including kinetic shells fired by enemy tanks, the Iron Fist is in its final
stages of testing and is predicted to be declared operational and ready for mass production by the beginning of the next decade.

The Iron Fist consists of a radar and passive optical system that detects
incoming threats and destroys them within a fraction of a second by using a combustible blast interceptor.

Unlike the Trophy, which fires off a large number of projectiles, the Iron Fist intercepts incoming threats by using a mortar-shaped rocket that destroys the threat by using a blast effect which crushes its soft components or deflects the incoming missile.

Rafael spokesman Amit Zimmer said the Trophy program was being “executed according to the schedule and requirements that were agreed upon between the IDF and the Defense Ministry.”

The Defense Ministry spokesman’s office said the program’s schedule was continuing according to plan.
