I have long contended that Iran’s motive in developing a deliverable nuclear warhead is primarily for deterrent purposes, so they can carry out a conventional war against Israel, without fear of Israel launching its fantastic nuclear armada of nuclear warheads against them. Iran is very much aware it cannot win a nuclear war against Israel, as is Syria and the other fanatical Islamic nations. The ten toes and 10 horns of Daniel and Revelation want a conventional war because it is much more to their advantage numerically and logistically.

I expect Iran to have developed a nuclear bomb before 2010, but it will take time to size it to mount on the missile warhead they are currently building to house it.

And they would never launch one against Israel unless it had been tested, nor would they launch without a sufficient backup arsenal of missiles ready to launch. All these things take time, so I am persuaded Israel will wait until after Iran has developed their first nuclear bomb before they launch any kind of a preemptive strike against its nuclear facilities.

Once Iran actually has a nuclear weapon, the nations of the world would breathe a sign of relief if Israel destroyed their facilities.

For whatever it is worth, I agree with the following article found in the Jerusalem Post. I believe the doves in the Bush administration will win, and the U.S. will not give Israel the green light for a facilities attack.

If Obama wins in November, forget about a green light until Hell freezes over. We will never go to war with Obama in office, unless someone lets a nuke go from afar and it lands on our shores. However, we will no doubt achieve international fame as advocates of a newly created group likely identified as the Little Lord Fauntleroy Debating Society.

Israel: Leaks about Iran strike plans reflect internal US debate

The recent spate of leaks and reports from Washington about whether Israel will, or should, take military action against Iran, and what that would mean for the US, is a reflection of deep divisions on the matter inside the Bush administration, Israeli diplomatic and defense officials said Sunday.

The officials said that the two sides of the argument, the “hawkish camp,” led by US Vice President Dick Cheney, and the “dovish camp,” led by Defense Secretary Robert Gates, are leaking assessments about Israeli intent to further their own agendas, and in this regard using Israel as a “pawn” in their own political battles.

For instance, one official said, the recent remarks made by US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Michael Mullen to the effect that an attack on Iran and a “third front” would be bad for US interests were aimed not merely at deterring Israel from action, but also at “handcuffing” those inside the administration who are supportive of military action.

One Israeli diplomatic official said that as the debate rages in Washington, it was clear that Israel would be unable to take military action without a green light from the US.

“Everyone understands that we could not take action without US approval,” the official said, “both because we would need to fly through airspace controlled by the US, and we would need their help in dealing with repercussions from any attack.” The most direct air route to Iran is through Iraqi airspace, which is controlled by the US.

“We would need their help in carrying out the attack, and also afterward,” the official said.

“We would have to deal with possible military action from Hizbullah and Syria, and also diplomatic fallout.

Don’t expect the world to clap if we attack Iran, and as a result oil prices spiral from $140 a barrel to $300 a barrel.”

The official said Israel would need US diplomatic cover to deal with the world’s condemnation, and possibly even sanctions, in the aftermath of a raid.

Although Israeli officials said they were not surprised by the various different assessments coming out of Washington, because they have long been aware of the internal divisions on this matter, they said they were slightly surprised by remarks made by Mullen about the “third front” because he had not issued these warnings in his meetings with top Israeli military brass during his visit to Tel Aviv last week.

At a press conference in Washington last week, Mullen said that “Opening up a third front right now would be extremely stressful on us,” adding that while he believed Iran was pursuing nuclear weapons the efforts needed to focus on diplomatic, financial and economic actions.

The Israeli officials said that the talks with Mullen had focused primarily on Iran but had also dealt with other regional issues such as Hamas’s military buildup in Gaza and Hizbullah’s in Lebanon. They added, however, that the concern voiced by Mullen was real and reflected fears in Washington that a strike against Iran would destabilize the region and undermine America’s recent success in Iraq.

Cordesman, an American national security analyst who served as a former national security assistant to presumptive Republic Party presidential nominee John McCain said Sunday that the US is trying to pursue the diplomatic option with Iran over its nuclear program since it does not view the nuclear threat by the Islamic Republic as an “urgent” crisis.

“I think we are contemplating to do exactly what we said we are doing – which is to try to pursue diplomatic options, and the reasons are very simple: We do not see this as an urgent crisis in terms of Iran rapidly acquiring weapons or effective delivery systems,” said Cordesman in an address at The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.

Cordesman, who also served as a former director of intelligence assessment in the Office of the US Secretary of Defense, conceded that the US assessment on Iran’s nuclear program is at odds with Israeli intelligence estimates, and said that the whole issue is likely to be left to the next US President.

“If that assessment changes, it does differ from some Israeli experts, then our timing might change. But I suspect that is going to be an issue for President Obama or President McCain,” he said.

“In terms of US strikes on Iran, we have a contingency plan for virtually anything. And in this case, are we going to constantly have the ability to execute some kind of strike plan against Iran’s missiles and weapons of mass destruction, including its nuclear facilities? Yes. Are we about to execute it

? No! The president of the United States has said that, the secretary of defense, the secretary of state [and] the chairman of Joint Chiefs.”

A US intelligence report issued last year stated that Iran had frozen its nuclear weapons program in 2003, but continued to enrich uranium, which, nuclear experts say, is the hardest part of building a bomb.

Israeli intelligence believes that the American report is incorrect, and that the Islamic Republic has continued to work on its nuclear weapons program.

What can the UK learn from New Zealand’s approach to sex workers? Quite a lot, actually.

On Wednesday June 25, sex workers and brothel operators mingled in parliament with a range of people – Catholic nuns, public health experts, and politicians – to mark the 5th anniversary of the decriminalisation of prostitution. Even the prime minster, Helen Clark, dropped in to pass comment on the success of giving rights to sex workers.

Throughout the day, participants heard from researchers who had been commissioned by the ministry of justice – included in the legisl ation w

as a requirement that a committee, appointed by the justice minister, be established to review the law and to assess its impact on the sex industry within five years.

It was no surprise to me that these researchers found overwhelming evidence to contradict the wild claims of opponents to the Prostitution Reform Act. Opponents had claimed that, as a consequence of liberalising the law, brothels would create havoc in every neighbourhood, with thugs moving in to traffic women and children. Yet none of these claims came true.

One researcher surveyed 772 sex workers from across the country, while the other interviewed government and non-government stakeholders, including labour and health officials, and brothel operators, about their reaction to decriminalisation. The overwhelming response to the legislation has been positive. Police have moved from clogging courts with prosecutions for soliciting to preventing violence against sex workers. As one said: “Now, if I have any trouble, I can pull out my phone and call the cops, and they will come”.

We may be a small country, but we are part of the Asia-Pacific rim with its dynamic migration patterns.

Motivated by claims of trafficking, immigration officials have raided brothels, seeking victims. They haven’t found any. As one sex worker told the audience: “I can stand up for myself. My boss may be an idiot, but he won’t try to push me around. I know the law”.

The chair of the prostitution law review committee – a retired Police commissioner and one time vice cop – said that people were gobsmacked when he told them the committee had found that many sex workers enjoy their work.

Researchers confirmed that many sex workers don’t want rescuing – they want rights.

The committee concluded that the act has had a marked effect in safeguarding the human rights of sex workers and improving their occupational safety

and health.

I believe the UK could reorient its laws to achieve this reality. And the sky won’t fall in.

I suspect, if Obama wins the November election, it will not be too long until a Democratic congress will pass some type of legislation under a “fair and balanced coverage act,” which will legislate that an equal time must be allotted for the opposing viewpoint on a newscast or talk show.

TEHRAN: An Iranian newspaper has been banned after carrying articles critical of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s economic policies, the state Press TV satellite station said on its website.

A government media body revoked the licence of Tehran Emrooz on Saturday, Press TV said.

It said the newspaper was launched 18 months ago and was seen as being close to Tehran Mayor Mohammed Baqer Qalibaf, a conservative who analysts say is a potential rival of Ahmadinejad in next year’s presidential election.

Tehran Emrooz’s publisher was summoned to a court on Sunday to answer charges of “printing pictures and editorial material insulting to the president and propagation of lies with the intention of agitating public opinion”

, Fars News Agency said.

The daily last week published a special issue on the third anniversary of Ahmadinejad’s election that included articles criticising the government’s economic record, Press TV said.

The daily’s editorial board acknowledged in a statement on Sunday it had gone beyond fair criticism of the government and issued an apology, the official IRNA news agency said.

“We declare (that the special issue) … was devoid of a fair and moderate stance, and the daily’s editorial board hereby apologises to the government officials … ,” IRNA quoted the board’s statement as saying.

Ahmadinejad, who came to power in 2005 on a pledge to share Iran’s oil wealth more fairly, has come under mounting criticism from parliament, the media and the public over a failure to rein in inflation now running at around 25 percent annually.

Although Iran says it allows free speech, journalists say they have to tread carefully to avoid being closed down.

Earlier this month, Fars was shut down for three days, accused of publishing “lies” about the possible dismissal of the central bank governor, one of its editors said.

Since 2000, Iran has closed more than 100 publications, accusing many of being “pawns of the West”. Many subsequently reopened under different names.

Unmasking the Myths Behind the Fairness Doctrine

Executive Summary

“I do not agree with what you have to say, but I’ll defend to the death your right to say it.” (Voltaire)

Political activists and even certain U.S. senators have argued that the federal government should reinstitute the Fairness Doctrine, which would require broadcasters to air both sides of controversial issues. Opponents charge that Fairness Doctrine advocates are trying to reduce the impact of conservative talk radio.

Rep. Mike Pence (R-Ind.) has introduced The Broadcaster Freedom Act (HR 2905), which would bar the Federal Communications Commission from reinstating the Fairness Doctrine.

The controversy touches on America’s most fundamental civic values. Do we still cherish freedom of speech, or are some of us succumbing to the tyrannical impulse to stifle the speech of political adversaries? Do our leaders trust us to accept responsibility to govern ourselves, or do they wish to control which information we receive?

Three principal arguments support resurrecting the Fairness Doctrine. First, the “scarcity” argument holds that the airwaves are public property with a limited number of broadcast frequencies, so government can and should intervene if the public debate is out of balance.

Second, the “censorship” argument holds that major corporations are muzzling liberal opinion on the radio, so Americans are not hearing both sides of issues. Third, the “ public interest�

�� argument holds that the Fairness Doctrine would increase the amount and variety of opinions available to the public.

Are these arguments valid

? They are myths.

1. The scarcity argument. Is conservative dominance of commercial talk radio distorting the national debate about public policy issues?

Americans have never enjoyed so many professional sources of news and opinion. Americans can choose from a dozen or more daily network television news shows, 10 separate 24/7 cable news and public affairs channels, 1,400 daily newspapers, and more than 2,200 radio stations airing news/talk.

The Internet has exponentially increased the availability of news sources. Thanks to the Internet, Americans are no longer limited to local media. Any St. Louis resident with a modem can read the Sacramento Bee and listen to political talk radio stations in Washington, D.C. The World Wide Web has pushed the number of daily news sources available well into the thousands for anybody with Internet access, and 70 percent or more of Americans are on line.

Only 7 percent of American adults consider radio to be their main source for news and information. Fifty-five percent rely prim arily on television news,

a ratio of nearly 8 to 1.

The Newspaper Association of America says 57 percent of American adults read a newspaper every day.

2. The censorship argument. Are Americans hearing both sides of debates about controversial public policy issues, or are liberal voices being shut out?

Liberal voices are well represented in talk radio, and are available to

anyone with a modem or an FM radio. Six of the top 25 commercial talk radio hosts are liberals. The commercial Air America network, created to spread liberal ideas, has 55 stations broadcasting over the air. Twenty-six of these stations also stream over the Internet, as do hundreds of public radio stations.

Noncommercial public radio has more than 800 stations with a total weekly news/talk audience of 14 million. At least 850 of the 2,200 talk stations air mostly liberal programming.

Radio is only one slice of the pie. Major liberal-leaning sources of news and opinion reach a far greater audience than conservative-leaning sources. Audience reach and circulation statistics illustrate the liberal domination of the five major information media, two of which have no conservative sources:

3. The public interest argument. Would the Fairness Doctrine increase or reduce discussion about public policy issues? History says speech would be curtailed.

When the Fairness Doctrine was in effect, talk radio avoided controversial topics. Most stations programmed only general talk and advice.

Politicians repeatedly have used the Fairness Doctrine to chill speech. John F. Kennedy and Lyndon Johnson both used the Fairness Doctrine to stifle criticism, suppress the speech of political adversaries, and force radio stations to provide free air time.

Conclusion

Efforts by liberal politicians to restore the Fairness Doctrine bring to mind the worst moment of Israel’s King David. David was not satisfied with his many wives and concubines; he also had to have the beautiful Bathsheba, the only wife of one of his soldiers.

American liberals already dominate four of the five most important news and information media, and they are determined to take over the fifth medium as well.

America has so many sources of news and information available that no federal regulation of broadcasting content can possibly be justified on the grounds of public interest. The Fairness Doctrine has an ugly history of political abuse directly intended to restrict the free exchange of ideas. As liberals propose and agitate for a resumption of the Fairness Doctrine, history may repeat itself.

Report: Iran responds to EU proposal

Iran delivered its response Friday

to an international offer

of economic and other incentives if it suspends a central part of its nuclear program, Iranian state television reported.

The report did not say what the response was.

Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, Saeed Jalili, told European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana by phone that Iran presented its response Friday, the report said.

It also said Solana and Jalili agreed during the conversation to hold the latest in a series of talks in the second half of July. Solana last met with Iranian officials in mid-June, trying to get Teheran to accept the incentives offer.

Acting on behalf of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany, the EU’s Solana offered the modified package of economic incentives to Iran during his June visit. The offer is meant to persuade Iran to halt uranium enrichment, a technology that the six world powers fear Iran could use to produce weapons.

Iran’s state radio in an earlier news bulletin quoted Jalili as saying the response would be delivered on Friday. There was no immediate explanation for the discrepancy with the TV report saying it had already been delivered.

The report by state TV also says Solana thanked Iran for sending the response and for agreeing to more talks.

Turkey Shaken With Arrests; Is AKP, The AKGB

Turkey woke up today to shocking arrests of two dozen prominent personalities known for their fierce opposition to AKP government. Among the detained are retired full generals and force commanders, ret.

brigadier and major generals, an admiral, a colonel, a university professor, prominent journalists from Cumhuriyet and Tercuman dailies, Chairman of Ankara Chamber of Commerce, chairman of Ataturkist Thought Association and members of other NGOs.

This is the first time in Turkish Republic’s history that top commanders are taken into custody of the police.

Police raided the homes of the detained at early morning hours and conducted search in their homes as well as in their work places, confiscating computers, documents and other belongings. Despite the fact that the court authorization for the detentions was obtained on June 29, police waited for two days to carry out the raids in four Turkish cities with 6000 officers, to coincide with the presentation of the verbal testimony of the Chief Prosecutor Abdurrahman Yalcinkaya to the Constitutional Court in AKP’s closure case.

It is reported that the police

is also looking for four other other personalities including the Honorary Chief Prosecutor of the Supreme Court Sabih Kanadoglu, and former AKP MP Turhan Comez that was expelled from AKP because of his opposition to party policies.

The official reason for the detentions is that those taken into custody had suspected links to an illegal, nationalist gang [Ergenekon] which is accused of paving the way to a military coup

to topple AKP government. Over hundred people were taken into custody in the past year under the so-called “Ergenekon” investigation. Some prominent Turkish personalities are held in custody since last year without being indicted or having seen a judge.

While the government circles and the Islamist media attack the alleged gang and vow to crack it down, many Turks believe that AKP government uses “Ergenekon” in order to suppress, intimidate and eliminate its opponents.
