Micah 5:1-4 – Now gather thyself in troops, O daughter of troops: he hath laid siege against us: they shall smite the judge of Israel with a rod upon the cheek. [2] But thou, Bethlehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. [3] Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she which travaileth hath brought forth: then the remnant of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. [4] And he shall stand and feed in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord his God; and they shall abide: for now shall he be great unto the ends of the earth.

These verses, exposited in Parts 1 through 4, were written more than 700 years before the birth of Christ. And yet they present: Bethlehem as His birthplace, His rejection as ruler over Israel, His last Passover in the daughter of troops Jerusalem, His head beatings by the troops of Pontius Pilate, Herod, and the High Priest, His rejection as the judge of Israel, His Father’s siege against Israel because of their rejection of the Son (which has lasted some 2000 years), Christ’s temporary rejection of Israel, His Second Advent as Messiah after Israel’s travail of 1260 days in the Negev Wilderness, at which time His brethren will return with Him to the nation of Israel, and the first 1000 years of His eternal kingdom, which phases into the final heaven age when the present earth and heavens pass away.

Micah 5:5 – And this man shall be the peace, when the Assyrian shall come into our land: and when he shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds, and eight principal men.

Now, in verse 5, we find that “this man” will himself “be the peace” because He personally brings it in by Himself when he returns to be “great unto the ends of the earth” for 1000 years. “This man” who brings “the peace” of a thousand years is, of course, Jesus Christ.

He is the primary contextual subject from verses 1 through 5. What happens to motivate His return to bring in the millennial reign is the movement of the Assyrian into the land of Israel. It is the final defeat and destruction of “the Assyrian” that will mark Christ’s Second Advent, and the beginning of His millennial reign.

When Micah wrote his prophecies the Assyrians had already driven into the northern Kingdom of Israel, and all that remained of Israel proper was its southern Kingdom of Judah.

So what were the borders of the land of Assyria when Micah wrote the fifth chapter of his book? The borders of the Assyrian territory stretched northward from roughly where Ramallah is located in the West Bank to the present day southern border of Turkey, and eastward to the Mediterranean Sea to establish its western limits, then westward across the Euphrates River to the Tigris River north of modern Baghdad in Iraq. Technically, I suppose one might be able to say this future “Assyrian” might come out of southern Turkey, northern Iraq, or Lebanon, but since modern day Syria occupies some 85% of the area covered by the Assyrian empire at the time of Micah’s writings, I am persuaded the Assyrian antichrist will come out of Syria. The possible argument that Micah 5:5 was fulfilled during the old Assyrian invasion of Micah’s day, is thwarted by the context pattern of the four verses before it all still being unfulfilled at the time they were written, and then being linked contextually to verse 5 by “this man,” and “the peace.” Additionally, this argument is smashed by the verse that follows it.

Micah 5:6 – And they shall waste the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof: thus shall he deliver us from the Assyrian, when he cometh into our land, and when he treadeth within our borders.

From the time of Micah’s writings to the present day, Israel has never “wasted the land of Assyria with the sword, and the land of Nimrod in the entrances thereof.” I will exposit specifically on both these locations in Prophecy Update Number 67, Lord willing.

The “Assyrian” of Micah 5:5 is not a European, an American, a Russian, an Eskimo, an Aborigine, an Ethiopian, or a platypus.

He is an Assyrian, who becomes chief prince of the land where descendants of Meshech and Tubal were dwelling when Ezekiel wrote his prophecies. I will elaborate on this in future updates, Lord willing. The expression involving “seven shepherds and eight principal men is, without question, an oft used Hebrew idiom. It was the Hebrew manner of expressing “more than enough.” Seven is the Hebrew word for “complete,” implying “enough,” and when “eight” is added to it, the expression means “more than enough.” When the Assyrian comes into Israel, and treads within its borders north of Beersheba for 1260 days, then Jesus will return to restore peace for 1000 years on this planet.

Christ’s Second Advent is accompanied by some 5/6 of the Assyrian’s armies being destroyed by the brightness of His coming.

His destruction of the Assyrian and his false prophet will make whatever force Israel is able to muster up in the Negev for the battle of Armageddon “more than enough.”

When the Assyrian sets on the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, as the willful King of the North preparing to launch his final attack on Israel at the battle of Armageddon, he will be beyond all help by men and Satan.

I Thessalonians 5:3,4 – For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

[4] But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

Why Iran Will Get Nuclear Weapons

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad assumes that once George W. Bush is out of the White House, the U.S. will accept a nuclear-armed Iran as a “regional superpower” in the Middle East.

He thinks the dominant mood in the U.S., and the West in general, is one of pre-emptive surrender. Ahmadinejad has castigated his predecessor Muhammad Khatami for accepting suspension of Iran’s uranium program in 2003. Khatami says he did so because at the time, shortly after the fall of Saddam Hussein in Iraq, he feared that the Americans might march on Tehran as well. As soon as that fear was gone, the program

was resumed at an even faster pace.

Ahmadinejad has already promised anti-American regimes in Latin America “full support and protection” against the “Great Satan” in Washington. Iran is laying the foundations for an armaments industry in Venezuela, and one day the Islamic Republic may extend its nuclear umbrella to Venezuela, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Paraguay, Ecuador and, why not, even Cuba. The Islamic Republic has been at war against the U.S. and the international system it leads for almost 30 years. As in all wars there are three ways to end this one: surrender, make a deal, or win. Ahmadinejad Was Not Mistranslated: What Iranian Leaders Really Say about Doing Away with Israel

Over the past several years, Iranian leaders – most prominently, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad – have made numerous statements calling for the destruction of Israel and the Jewish people. While certain experts have interpreted these statements to be simple expressions of dissatisfaction with the current Israeli government and its policies, in reality, the intent behind Ahmadinejad’s language and that of others is clear.

What emerges from a comprehensive analysis of what Ahmadinejad actually said – and how it has been interpreted in Iran – is that the Iranian president was not just calling for “regime change” in Jerusalem, but rather the actual physical destruction of the State of Israel. When Ahmadinejad punctuates his speech with “Death to Israel” (marg bar Esraiil), this is no longer open to various interpretations.

A common motif of genocide incitement is the dehumanization of the target population.

The Nazi weekly Der Sturmer portrayed Jews as parasites and locusts. Ahmadinejad said in a speech on February 20, 2008: “In the Middle East, they [the global powers] have created a black and filthy microbe called the Zionist regime.” In the early 1990s, Hutu propaganda in Rwanda against the Tutsis described them as “cockroaches.” Prior to Saddam Hussein’s operations against the Iraqi Shiite population in 1991, his Baath Party newspaper characterized them as “monkey-faced people.”

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who succeeded Ayatollah Khomeini in 1989, has made statements about Israel similar to Ahmadinejad. On December 15, 2000, he declared on Iranian TV: “Iran’s position, which was first expressed by the Imam [Khomeini] and stated several times by those responsible, is that the cancerous tumor called Israel must be uprooted from the region.”

Michael Axworthy, who served as the Head of the Iran Section of Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, notes that when the slogan “Israel must be wiped off the map” appeared “draped over missiles in military parades, that meaning was pretty clear.”

There is an ample legal basis for the prosecution of Ahmadinejad in the International Court of Justice and the International Criminal Court for direct and public incitement to commit genocide and crimes against humanity.

Syria, N. Korea built reactor to help Iran’

German newspaper reports country’s secret service has evidence that Syria, North Korea were helping Iran to develop nuclear program in Al-Kibar site until Islamic republic could develop a bomb on its own territory

Damascus and Pyongyang helped Iran to develop its nuclear program through the construction of a suspected nuclear site in Syria that Israel destroyed last September, the German newsweekly Der Spiegel reported. But the Syrian president Bashar Assad is considering withdrawing his support for the Iranian program, the paper added in its next edition out Monday, quoting German secret service reports.

According to those intelligence reports, it said, a joint plan by Syria, North Korea and Iran for a nuclear reactor for military use was to have been developed at the Al-Kibar site in the east of Syria.

The site – to be inspected by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) – was destroyed by Israeli fighter jets with Washington’s support. Syria denied it had military purposes.

The reports cited by Der Speigel claimed that North Korea was to help Iranian scientists to advance their nuclear program, and that Al-Kibar was to have been used as a temporary site for Iran to develop a nuclear bomb until it was able to do so on its own territory.

According to the report, the plan was discussed during a visit by Iranian President Mamhoud Ahmadinejad to Syria in 2006. The three countries also cooperated in the production of chemical weapons, Der Speigel stated. At the time of an explosion at a chemical site in July 2007, 15 Syrian soldiers, 12 Iranian engineers and three North Koreans were among the victims.

Ten months after the destruction of the Al-Kibar site, on the basis of allegations that a nuclear reactor was being built there with the aid of North Korea, the IAEA said it was sending experts to Syria to investigate.

Documents and detailed photographs supplied in April by Washington to the IAEA backed up the suspicions, but Syria rejected the allegations describing them as “ridiculous.”

Iran and Syria, both parties to the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, signed a memorandum of cooperation at the end of May on the two countries’ “independence and territorial integrity.” The alliance between the two countries goes back to the 1979 Iranian revolution, and was strengthened in 2006 with the signing of an agreement on military cooperation.

The character of Ishmael does seem to have been carried forward in the genes of his descendents. They strive to be the dictator of whatever fold they abide in, and refuse to surrender their leadership except by a fight to the death. God can hold iron and clay together, and when he decides it will be done, we will see it happen. The current internal conflict in the Hamas is typical of what destroyed the first Islamic Caliphate begun by Muhammad, when their divisions among themselves caused it to die by the sword of the Mongolian Empire in 1258.

The same wild man (or donkey} characteristic is now keeping them from uniting to resurrect an Islamic Caliphate form the ashes of the first one. But when God acts to put it in their hearts to unite from Morocco to India, they will do so just long enough to follow the Antichrist to victory, and a 3 and ½ year reign from Dan to Beersheba.

Attempted Coup Splits Hamas Military Forces

The Hamas military wing, Iz al-Din al-Qassam, has split into two groups after an attempt to replace its military commander, Ahmed Al-Jabari, with Imad Akal.

Mohammed Deif, the former head of Iz al-Din al-Qassam, was behind the attempt, according to Palestinian sources.

There are now two camps: one led by Al-Jabari and the other by Akal.

There have been long-stand ing disagreements between Al-Jabari and the political leadership of Hamas

in Gaza. The tension exploded when Hamas police attempted to arrest members of the military group who were suspected of criminal activities. The Hamas militants resisted arrest, and the police and Iz al-Din al-Qassam members exchanged fire.

According to the sources, Iz al-Din al-Qassam is divided, and there have been several attempts by commanders to kill their rivals to ensure they control an area or the organization’s assets. In Khan Yunis, for example, for over a year there have been three local commanders, each of whom considers himself the chief in the region. In addition, senior Iz al-Din commanders have become more involved in criminal activities, particularly smuggling, which they control exclusively. (Ha’aretz)

Exclusive: Uproar, military alerts, oil price surge over apparent Israeli air drill for Iran attack

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that an oil price surge of 5 percent to $135.92 was triggered by the report leaked by US government officials of an Israeli air force drill over Greece for an apparent strike against Iran, Friday, June 20. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei ordered a war alert in the Revolutionary Guards and armed forces, with the Israeli and US Gulf forces following suit.

Tehran made no immediate comment, while Iranian leaders were reported puzzled by the Bush administration’s motives in leaking the report to the New York Times.

The most extreme reaction came from the UN nuclear watchdog’s director Mohamad ElBaradei, who threatened to resign if there was a military strike on Iran, warning such an attack would turn the region into a “fireball.”

“A military strike would be worse than anything possible,” he warned. “..it will mean that Iran, if it is not already making nuclear weapons, will launch a crash course to build them…”

Russian foreign minister Sergei Ivanov maintained that neither Israel nor the United States had produced proof that Iran was developing nuclear weapons and said the issue must be dealt with by diplomacy and talks with Tehran.

The American UN ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad agreed. While stating the view that Iran’s acquisition of nuclear weapons would be “unacceptable,” he stressed:

“We’re in the phase of diplomacy; we want a diplomatic settlement of this issue.

The ball is frankly in Iran’s court.”

DEBKAfile’s political sources comment that if a reported air maneuver simulating an attack on Iran’s nuclear facilities raised so much international, financial and military dust, how much more extreme would the world response be to a real attack.

The Greek Air force confirmed its participation in the Israeli military exercise held three weeks ago, but did not confirm the claim by Washington officials that it was a rehearsal for a potential attack on Iran. The Greek source stated no ground targets were involved as the drill was mainly aimed at personnel training.

It was the first large-scale exercise between Israel and the air force of Greece, a member of NATO.

UP to 40 Israeli Air force F-15 and F-16 warplanes were based at the Greek Air Force Station at Souda on the southern Mediterranean island of Crete for the duration of the exercise, said the source.

Hamas: We are still committed to the cease-fire agreement

In response to the firing of Kassam rockets from the Gaza Strip into the western Negev Tuesday afternoon, Hamas has said that the group is

still committed to the cease-fire.

Three Kassams were fired into the Sderot area, the second violation of a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas which took effect last Thursday.

Two women were treated for shock from the attack, and Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s office has called the attack a violation of the truce.

The Islamic Jihad militant group claimed responsibility, saying that it was avenging an IDF raid that killed two Palestinians in the West Bank early Tuesday.

Three Kassam rockets hit the western Negev on Tuesday afternoon, in a second violation of a cease-fire that Hamas has been abiding by since it went into effect last Thursday.

Islamic Jihad claimed responsibility for the attack, saying that the attack was to avenge an IDF raid that killed one of its members in the West Bank early Tuesday.

“We cannot keep our hands tied when this is happening to our brothers in the West Bank,” the group said in a statement.

Hamas spokesman Sami Abu Zuhri said the rocket attack “came as result of Israeli provocation this morning.” He added, however, that Hamas was “committed to the calm”

“We will talk and we will make sure that all of the factions are committed to the calm, too,” he said.

A statement from Prime Minister Ehud Olmert’s Office has condemned the attack as a “gross violation” of the truce, but did not say whether it would retaliate.

One of the rockets damaged a house in Sderot, where two women were treated for shock. A second rocket landed in the Sderot area, causing no casualties or damage, and a third landed in an open area in the western Negev.

The rockets were fired just as Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in an effort to piggyback on the momentum of the cease-fire and push the release of kidnapped IDF soldier Gilad Schalit.

Earlier Monday overnight, Palestinian gunmen in the Gaza Strip fired a mortar shell into Israel – the first breach of the cease-fire since it went into effect five days ago.

There were no reports of casualties or damage.

Meanwhile, two Islamic Jihad gunmen, one of them a senior operative by the name of Tarek abu Ghally, 25, were killed in a joint IDF-Shin Bet operation Monday night in Nablus.

The army said the two were killed in exchanges of fire that ensued during an attempt to arrest them.

According to the military, Ghally was planning to carry out a terror attack in Israel “in the very near future.”

Islamic Jihad plans to ruin truce

Islamic Jihad in the West Bank is planning to carry out an attack on Israel to ruin the cease-fire agreement in the Gaza Strip, Palestinian Authority security officials said on Monday

The officials told The Jerusalem Post that two senior members of the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, Fadi Kitani and Ala Abu al-Rub, have refused to surrender to the PA security forces in the West Bank despite repeated attempts to persuade them to stop their activities.

Kitani, who lives in Tulkarm, is a top member of the Al-Quds Battalion, the armed wing of Islamic Jihad, which is responsible for a series of attacks on Israel over the past few years.

The PA’s Preventative Security Service tried several times to arrest him, but to no avail.

Over the weekend, Kitani’s wife was detained for several hours by Palestinian security agents who questioned her about her husband’s activities.

The detention of the wife is seen as an attempt to put pressure on Kitani

to hand himself over to the PSS.

According to the PA security officials, Kitani is suspected of heading an Islamic Jihad cell that is planning to carry out attacks on Israel to “sabotage” the cease-fire agreement.

They pointed out that Islamic Jihad leaders had voiced reservations about the Egyptian-brokered agreement, although they also promised to abide by it in the Gaza Strip.

The o ther Islamic Jihad operative being pursued by

the PA security forces is Abu al-Rub of Kabatiya, near Jenin, who is the commander of the Al-Quds Battalions in the northern West Bank.

Two weeks ago, the PA security forces almost succeeded in capturing him after surrounding the house where he was hiding in Kabatiya. But Abu al-Rub managed to escape after firing shots into the air.

At least five Islamic Jihad members have been arrested by the PA security forces in the past two months on suspicion of planning to launch attacks on Israel, the officials said.

The only thing I knew about Islam in 1952, when I made my first violent contact with its beliefs on a narrow side street in Libya, was acquired from history classes in America. During the period 1952 to 1971, from time to time I was associated with, attended IHL’s with, and trained Muslim military personnel from numerous Middle East countries. The more personal contact I had with Persians and Arabs, the

more amazed I became at what they believed.

The eternal doctrine of the Islamic faith, both from a theological and military position, is that Jihad, in its many forms, must continue until the entire world is one Islamic Caliphate. It is in every way the spirit of Antichrist which was to become so powerful in its influence in the last days of this age.

Since Muhammad wrote the Koran, many look upon him primarily as a Holy Man associated only with religion, but that is far from the case. He was a great military leader who merged religion and warfare into concepts and procedures that eventually became an Islamic empire after his death. The following excerpts came from an article by Richard A.

Muhammad’s belief in Islam and his own role as the “Messenger of God” revolutionized Arabian warfare and resulted in the creation of the ancient world’ s fir

st army motivated by a coherent system of ideological belief. The ideology of holy war (jihad) and martyrdom (shahada) for the faith was transmitted to the West during the wars between Muslims and Christians in Spain and France, where it changed traditional Christian pacifistic thinking on war, brought into being a coterie of Christian warrior saints, and provided the Catholic Church with its ideological justification for the Crusades. Ideology—whether religious or secular—has remained a primary component of military ventures ever since.

Muhammad forged the military instrument of the Arab conquests that began within two years of his death by bringing into being a completely new kind of army not seen before in Arabia.

He introduced no fewer than eight major military reforms that transformed the armies and conduct of war in Arabia. Just as Philip of Macedon transformed the armies of Greece so his successor, Alexander, could employ them as instruments of conquest and empire, Muhammad transformed the armies of Arabia so his successors could use them to defeat the armies of Persia and Byzantium and establish the heartland of the empire of Islam.

One of Muhammad’s most important innovations was convincing his troops that they were doing God’s work on earth. There were of course soldiers of other faiths who fought on religious grounds. But no army before Muhammad’s ever placed religion at the center of military motivation and defined the soldier primarily as an instrument of God’s will on earth.

The soldiers of Islam came to see themselves as fighting under God’s instructions. The result, still evident in Islamic societies today, was a soldier who enjoyed much higher social status and respect than soldiers in Western armies.

A central element to an Islamic soldier’s motivation in Muhammad’s day was the idea that death was not something to be feared but rather embraced. Muhammad’s pronouncement that those killed in battle would be welcomed immediately into a paradise of pleasure and eternal life was a powerful inducement to perform well in combat.

To die fighting in defense of the faith was to fulfill God’s will and become a martyr. Life itself was subordinate to the needs of the faith. Muslim soldiers killed in battle were accorded the highest respect on the Arab scale of values.

While those who died in battle had formerly been celebrated as examples of courage and selflessness, before Muhammad it was never suggested that death was to be welcomed or required to be a good soldier.

Muhammad’s teachings changed the traditional Arab view of military sacrifice and produced a far more dedicated soldier than Arab armies had ever witnessed before.

Arab warfare prior to Muhammad’s reforms involved clans and tribes fighting for honor or loot.

No commander aimed at the enslavement or extermination of the enemy, nor the occupation of his lands. Arab warfare had been tactical warfare, nothing more. There was no sense of strategic war in which long-term, grand strategic objectives were sought and toward which the tactical application of force was directed.

Muhammad was the first to introduce to the Arabs the notion of war for strategic goals. His ultimate goal, the transformation of Arab society through the spread of a new religion, was strategic in concept. Muhammad’s application of force and violence, whether unconventional or conventional, was always directed at this strategic goal. Although he began as the founder of an insurgency, he was always Clausewitzian in his view that the use of force was a tactical means to the achievement of larger strategic objectives. Had Muhammad not introduced this new way of thinking to Arab warfare, the use of later Arab armies to forge a world empire would

not only have been impossible, it would have been unthinkable.

Once war was harnessed to strategic objectives, it became possible to expand its application to introduce tactical dimensions that were completely new to Arab warfare. Muhammad attacked tribes, towns, and garrisons before they could form hostile coalitions; he isolated his enemies by severing their economic lifelines and disrupting their lines of communication; he was a master at political negotiation, forming alliances with pagan tribes when it served his interests; and he laid siege to cities and towns. He also introduced the new dimension of psychological warfare, employing terror and massacre as means to weaken the will of his enemies.

The exploits and stratagems of the prophet Muhammad still serve as an example to modern-day jihadists. In 2006, former top Pentagon official William Gawthrop noted, “We still do not have an in-depth understanding of the war-fighting doctrine laid down by Muhammad, how it might be applied today by an increasing number of Islamic groups, or how it might be countered.” Based on the words and deeds of Muhammad, most schools of Islamic jurisprudence agree that the following are all legitimate during war against the infidel: the indiscriminate use of missile weaponry, even if women and children are present (catapults in Muhammad’s 7th century, hijacked planes or WMD by analogy today); THE NEED TO ALWAYS DECEIVE THE ENEMY AND EVEN BREAK FORMAL TREATIES WHENEVER POSSIBLE; AND THAT THE ONLY FUNCTION OF THE PEACE TREATY, OR HUDNA, IS TO GIVE THE ISLAMIC ARMIES TIME TO REGROUP FOR A RENEWED OFFENSIVE, AND SHOULD, IN THEORY, LAST NO MORE THAN TEN YEARS.

Smuggling into Gaza will not stop, Hamas leader Ismail Haniya told worshippers before Friday prayers. Reacting to Haniya’s remarks, Mark Regev, a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Olmert, underlined that the Egyptian-brokered truce explicitly stated that arms smuggling must halt. “The agreement with Egypt states clearly that there must not be any contraband arms heading for Gaza and no attacks from Gaza towards Israeli territory by any of the armed groups.” Israeli security sources say Hamas has smuggled more than 100 tons of explosives into Gaza, including rockets and anti-tank missiles, since the Islamists seized control in June 2007.

Terror Activity, Arms Smuggling Stepped Up in Gaza

The Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet) has identified a recent increase in terrorist activity in Gaza, Yuval Diskin, the head of the intelligence agency, said Sunday. He added that arms smuggling had been stepped up, as well as training. Diskin added that major terror attacks were in the works on the eve of the cease-fire. On June 22, Hamas planned to drive two booby-trapped vehicles into Israel through a hole in the fence to have been made by an armored tractor.

However, one of the booby-trapped vehicles exploded in a Hamas operative’s home. (Ha’aretz)
