Syrian FM: Israel committed to a full withdrawal from Golan

Damascus received commitments for an Israeli withdrawal from the Golan Heights up to the June 4, 1967 border during Turkish-brokered indirect talks, Syrian Foreign Minister Walid Moallem said on Wednesday.

“We received commitments for a withdrawal from the Golan to the June 4, 1967 line,” Moallem told AFP during a visit to Bahrain. “This is not new. It started since Rabin’s pledge [for a pullout] in 1993, and all subsequent Israeli prime ministers abided by it.”

Earlier, in a dramatic announcement, the Prime Minister’s Office said that Israel and Syria have begun indirect peace talks.

The announcement comes after months of reports of unofficial messages going back and forth from Jerusalem to Damascus through Turkey, and was simultaneously announced in Ankara and Damascus.

“Israel and Syria have begun indirect peace talks with the Syrians, under the auspices of Turkey,” the statement read.

“The two sides have declared their intention to conduct the negotiations in good faith and with openness.”

The statement said Syria and Israel have agreed to carry out the dialogue in a serious and continuous manner with the aim of reaching a comprehensive peace within the framework set up at the Madrid Conference.

According to the statement the two sides thanked Turkey and its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan for their role in the talks and for their “generous hospitality.”

The indirect talks started in February 2007 when Olmert visited Turkey and in a two-and-a-half hour private conversation with Erdogan agreed that Turkey would begin mediating between Israel and Syria with the goal of beginning peace negotiations.

Israel wants kidnapped soldier Gilead Shalit included in the ceasefire deal.

It has offered to include 72 convicted murderers in the list of jailed terrorists for release. Hamas is demanding 350.

Prime minister Ehud Olmert and Barak, after opting for a truce in Gaza rather than an effective military operation against Hamas, are expected to compromise on this question too.

Olmert’s statement at the Sunday, May 18, government session in Jerusalem that the Gaza situation cannot go on and Israel “is very close to the point of a decision” on this issue, is seen by inside sources as an attempt to mislead the public which is demanding that the IDF give Hamas a real thrashing.

He hopes the deal will go down more smoothly if Gilead Shalit is freed.

The three key outstanding questions are:

1. The number of jailed Palestinian murderers to be traded for Shalit.

2. How and what stage Israel lifts its blockade on the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip. This will entail throwing open all the enclave’s border crossings at some point as part of the reciprocal ceasefire package.

3. Egyptian leaders have promised to do their best to close down the smuggling of Palestinian arms and terrorists trained in Iran in order to strengthen the ceasefire. But to date, these assurances have never held up for long.

Orthodox youth burn New Testaments

Orthodox Jews set fire to hundreds of copies of the New Testament in a religious Israeli town.

Or Yehuda Deputy Mayor Uzi Aharon said missionaries recently entered a neighborhood in the predominantly religious town of 34,000 in central Israel, distributing hundreds of New Testaments and missionary material.

aron said, he got into a loudspeaker car last Thursday and drove through the neighborhood, urging people to turn over the material to Jewish religious students who went door to door to collect it.

The books were dumped into a pile

and set afire in a lot near a synagogue, he said.

The Israeli Maariv daily reported Tuesday that hundreds of Jewish religious school students took part in the book-burning. But Aharon told The Associated Press that only a few students were present, and that he was not there when the books were torched. Not all of the New Testaments that were collected were burned, but hundreds were, he said.

He said he regretted the burning of the books, but called it a “commandment” to burn materials that urge Jews to convert.

“I certainly don’t denounce the burning of the booklets,” he said. “I denounce those who distributed the booklets.”

Calev Myers, an attorney who represents Messianic Jews, or Jews who accept Jesus as their savior, demanded in an interview with Army Radio that all those involved be put on trial. He estimated there were 10,000 Messianic Jews, who are also known as Jews for Jesus, in Israel.

Police had no immediate comment.

Work on Ceasefire but Plan Invasion

For some reason, the current negotiations between Hamas and Israel being conducted through Egypt, a third party, remind me of a rhyme I think I first heard in the first grade.

One summer day about midnight,

Two dead boys began to fight.

They turned their backs, and faced each other,

Then drew their swords, and shot each other.

Two deaf and dumb policemen heard the noise,

And came and killed the two dead boys.

Back on the first day of this month, I indicated that while a lot of confusing statements and denials would be flowing back and forth for a while, that just the preceding confusing but of contradicting rhyme, it would all eventually end in a truce, and after a while, perhaps a hudna.

I am still of that opinion. We are including three previous Blogs on this subject from April 18, 2006, March 12, 2008, and May 1, 2008 to accompany the present Blog. The three previous Blogs follow.

Two years ago

in our Blog of April 18, 2006, an excerpt of which follows our heading, I indicated that a truce might be the only way to fulfill the false peace of I Thessalonians 5:3,4

Last month in our Blog of March 12, 2008, I indicated a truce as the gateway to the prophetic fulfillment of Paul’s prophetic statement found in I Thessalonians 5:3,4.

In our AM Blog of April 30, 2008, I indicated it was quite possible that a scenario of temporary false peace could be about to come to the Syria, Hizbullah, Hamas, and Israel section of the Middle East, as a delayed result of the destruction of the Syrian Nuclear Building.

Hudna (Indefinite Truce) May be the Only Way to a False Peace!

The following two articles, one from the Palestinian Center for Policy and Survey Research, and the other from the Times, UK, were both extracted from the Jerusalem Center for Public Affairs Daily Alert.

The Scriptures indicate that a false peace will come to Israel before it is attacked from the north. It is appearing more and more likely that it may be in the form of a Hudna issued by the terror groups in Israel for the production of a “quiet for quiet” indefinite period of time, which is allowable under the traditional teachings of Islam for the purpose of building up strength and coordination of future conquests. These two articles, which follow, show little hope for what Western Powers would identify as a negotiated peace, and an indefinite truce agreement may be the best one can hope to achieve as a false peace.

Hudna – A Gateway to Prophecy Fulfillment!

The actual timing of precisely “when” a time of unbroken “continuous” calm or truce will come into effect in Israel, such that all rocket attacks out of the Gaza Strip actually cease, I do not know.

I expect spurious rockets to continue off and on for awhile, and for an occasional terrorist to be killed by the IDF, but Scripture does indicate that some sort of a “calm”, “truce,” or “hudna” will cause Israel to be crying out “Peace and safety,” at the very time “sudden destruction comes on her.

The IDF statement by Ehud Barak in the first article, makes it clear that the current actions which seem to be leading into an eventual hudna, could all go up in smoke at the drop of a hat, and the IDF may launch a full blown operation into the Gaza Strip at any moment. I do believe that after much more off again, on again, gone again, not again rhetoric, and skirmishes between them, a hudna will come into place between Israelis and the Palestinians at some point in time between 2008 and 2010, but that it will be suddenly broken by a bloodthirsty Jihad from the north at some point in time between 2010 and 2015.

Olmert skeptical of cease-fire, but going along for Mubarak

Israel is skeptical that a cease-fire with Hamas will be reached and, therefore, the IDF is preparing for a large-scale military operation in the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert has said in recent closed-door meetings while adding that he is letting the process play out in order to show respect for the Egyptian leadership.

On Monday, Defense Minister Ehud Barak met with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and Intelligence Minister Omar Suleiman in Sharm e-Sheikh and presented them with Israel’s proposal for a cease-fire in Gaza – a two-stage deal that would first include a cessation of military operations and terror activity and then a lifting of the siege over Gaza in exchange for the advancement in negotiations over the release of kidnapped soldier Gilad Schalit.

Barak told Mubarak that the continued Kassam rocket attacks against Israel would speed up an escalation on the Gaza front and an Israeli military invasion.

On Tuesday, Suleiman will meet with a Hamas delegation, led by Moussa Abu Marzuk, deputy head of the group’s Damascus-based political bureau, in Cairo and present them with Barak’s two-stage proposal. Israeli defense officials said it was likely that Hamas would accept the new terms.

During their meeting, Barak also stressed Israel’s position that Schalit’s release must be part of any cease-fire deal with Hamas in Gaza.

A cease-fire, he said, would only be accepted by Israel after a complete cessation of terrorist activity by Hamas and other terror factions, as well as a stop to the smuggling of weapons from the Sinai into Gaza.

Kadima MK Shai Hermesh said Monday that Olmert told him in a closed-door meeting last week that while he was “very skeptical” about the ch ances of reaching

an Egyptian-mediated cease-fire, he is letting the process play out in order to show respect to Suleiman.

Hermesh lives in Kibbutz Kfar Aza, where resident Jimmy Kedoshim was killed by mortar fire two weeks ago. He said he told Olmert about the suffering of his neighbors and Olmert responded that if Israel’s demands were not met in the talks, there would be a military operation in the Gaza Strip that would be “difficult and painful.”

Olmert’s spokesman denied that Olmert would say he was very skeptical of the talks or that they were intended to please Mubarak.

But he said Olmert’s threat to take action in the Gaza Strip was real and serious.

The prime minister told the Kadima faction repeatedly on Monday that “decision time was approaching” regarding whether there should be a major operation in the Gaza Strip.

“The perpetual threat has reached a climax,” Olmert told the MKs. “Israel cannot allow the current situation in the South to continue.”

Transportation Minister Shaul Mofaz, Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter and Vice Premier Haim Ramon all urged Olmert in the meeting to expedite an operation in the Gaza Strip.

“We know who the address is and who is leading [the attacks on Israeli civilians],” Mofaz said. “I very much hope the time has come to change the policies and change the situation. We don’t need to make deals with terrorist organizations.”

Dichter, who lives in Ashkelon, warned that tragedies would soon outnumber miracles in his city.

Ramon acknowledged that Israel is conducting negotiations with Hamas – contrary to the government’s own policy on the matter, even if those talks are held via Suleiman.

“Negotiations are being conducted with Hamas in contrast to the government’s decision, which has determined that it will only be possible to deal with Hamas after it accepts the conditions of the Quartet,” Ramon said. “We aren’t fighting against a terror organization, but rather a state of terrorism.

A terror organization has an area under its control and Israel cannot, in my opinion, make peace with a Hamas state on the southern border.”

The names of over 31,000 American scientists that reject the theory of anthropogenic global warming are to be revealed on Monday.

Although this will occur at the National Press Club in Washington, DC., it seems a metaphysical certitude media will completely ignore the event.

Why: the Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine (OISM) will announce that more than 31,000 scientists have signed a petition rejecting claims of human-caused global warming.

The purpose of OISM’s Petition Project is to demonstrate that the claim of “settled science” and an overwhelming “consensus” in favor of the hypothesis of human-caused global warming and consequent climate damage is wrong. No such consensus or settled science exists. As indicated by the petition text and signatory list, a very large number of American scientists reject this hypothesis.

It is evident that 31,072 Americans with university degrees in science – including 9,021 PhDs, are not “a few.” Moreover, from the clear and strong petition statement that they have signed, it is evident that these 31,072 American scientists are not “skeptics.”

Folks should recall that this petition was first circulated in 1999 garnering more than 19,000 signatures.

The alarmists discounted its significance because there were some duplicate names, and some of the signatories apparently weren’t scientists — or so the story goes.

With over 31,000 now on the list, all with degrees in science — including 9,000 PhDs! — what might th is d

o to the nonsensical premise of there being a consensus concerning this issue

Probably not much, because apart from conservative websites, talk radio hosts, and Fox News, nobody is going to report it.

Al Gore receives $1 million prize from Dan David Foundation

Al Gore, the former US vice president turned environmentalist, has received a $1 million prize for his work from the Dan David Foundation.

Gore received the foundation’s its annual “present” prize for alerting the world to the crisis from overuse of fossil fuels.

It also gave prizes in “past” and “future” categories.

“We do face a planetary emergency,” Dan David Present Laureate Al Gore told the audience Monday night at Tel Aviv University, “I know it sounds shrill but it’s true.”

Gore, as is his wont, then rattled off several alarming facts about climate change.

“Forty percent of the northern polar ice cap has disappeared in the last 20 years,” he said.

“We have enough solar energy from 40 minutes of sunlight hitting the earth to power the whole world for a year,” he noted, “That is a decision we must make for our children and our grandchildren.”

“The missing ingredient is political will. And we all know that political will is a renewable resource,” he concluded.

On a more upbeat note, he wished Israel a happy birthday and admitted that today was his and Tipper’s 38th wedding anniversary.

Dan David Past Laureate playwright Sir Tom Stoppard talked about the importance of art and culture.

“The past throws a shadow as long as memory and time, but also throws light,” he said.

“Art is part of the immaterial universe… its essence is spiritual.

It is the immaterial reality that makes endurance and survival bearable,” he said.

President Shimon Peres welcomed the prize winners and spoke about Gore and Amos Oz, whom he called friends.

“Oz and Gore are eyeopeners. We were totally blind, now because of them we are less blind,” he said.

“Judging by the two of them, all the rest are worthy as well,” he added.
