Large segments of this world have demonstrated a universal hatred for Jews in general for a very long time, and it is not going to go away. In fact, I am certain it is going to get much worse with the passage of time.

Luke 20:9-18 – Then began he to speak to the people this parable; A certain man planted a vineyard, and let it forth to husbandmen, and went into a far country for a long time. [10] And at the season he sent a servant to the husbandmen, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty. Matthew 23:37-39 – O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! [38] Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. [39] For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

This hatred toward Israel will not end until Messiah’s Second Advent, when all Israel will say, “Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.”

II Corinthians 3:15-18 – But even unto this day, when Moses is read, the vail is upon their heart. [16] Nevertheless when it shall turn to the Lord, the vail shall be taken away.

[17] Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty. [18] But we all, with open face beholding as in a glass the glory of the Lord, are changed into the same image from glory to glory, even as by the Spirit of the Lord.

I do not hate the Jews.

I love them as God’s chosen people and apple of his eye. But I know much of the world will grow in hatred for them as the day of Messiah draws near.

Anti-Jewish animosity, rather than economic distress, is terror’s root cause

Many people around the world, including some Israelis, believe that the moment the conflict between us and the Palestinians would be resolved, the reason for the Arab and Muslim world’s hostility towards us will disappear. Peace will prevail among Israel and all Arab states, tensions between Islam

and the West will fade, and the terror threat against Western nations will be lifted.

This conviction is naïve and false – the Palestinian issue is the pretext; a means used to slam Israel. It is not the problem.

The Arab world never reconciled itself to our existence as a Jewish state in the Mideastern space. The only Arab maps where the State of Israel appears are military

maps. When it comes to the maps used in geography classes at schools, we do not exist.

Arab states have no interest whatsoever in the fate of the Palestinians.

Syria’s defense minister referred to Arafat as the “son of 60,000 whores,” while Egypt’s president once urged the Palestinian leader to do something by telling him: “Come on already, you dog.” We must understand the meaning of such insult in the Arab world, and this is nothing compared to the declarations that were not uttered in public.

If the Palestinian issue bothered Arab states so much, what stopped them from establishing a Palestinian state before 1967 and the Six-Day War?

The argument that the suffering and distress experienced by the Palestinians are the reason for terror against Israel and the West is also unfounded. Terrorism against Jews in Israel started more than 120 years ago, much before the Six-Day War and the War of Independence; before we were accused of expulsion or occupation. Just as it was then, today too the hatred for Jews and rejection of our existence here are the reason for terrorism.

Let’s examine, for example, the despicable terrorist who carried out the attack at the Mercaz Harav yeshiva in Jerusalem. We are talking about the son of a wealthy family who lived in a nice house and made a nice living through those he murdered via the family’s transportation company. He did not act because of distress, but rather, because of hatred.

Aggressor can’t be appeased

If we look back at the perpetrators of the September 11 attacks in the United States, we would discover that most of them were Saudis and that the funding and assistance they received is also related to the Saudis. It is difficult to claim that the Saudis suffer from any kind of distress, at least not in financial terms. Perhaps life is a bit boring for them, or the weather is too hot, but there is no shortage of money there.

The reason for that and other offensives is radical Islamic fanaticism that is unwilling to accept the West and its way of life and culture, and seeks to enforce its dark and zealous beliefs on all global residents through any means available. Live in line with our ways, or die – this is what they say.

It would be good for the US and Europe to realize that pressing Israel

to make concessions would not bring them the calm they so covet and would not allow them

to go back to a life of hedonistic euphoria.

Giving in to terrorism and violence does not serve to appease the aggressor, as was proven by Hitler, but rather, only encourages it.

It would be good if people around the world and around here too would realize that the zealot demon that came out of the bottle cannot be compromised with. We can only push it back into the bottle with strength and determination and bury it deeply in

the sands of the Arabian Peninsula.

Matthew 10:34-36 – Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword. [35] For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter

against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law. [36] And a man’s foes shall be they of his own household.

Since the Cross there has been Religious Conflict between the children of Abraham through Jesus and the children of Abraham through Jacob. Since the writing of the Koran by Muhammad the children of Abraham through Ishmael have joined the religious fray, and countless millions of lives have been lost in the bloodbaths created by the differences in what each one believes about the God of Abraham.

By now it should be apparent to atheists, agnostics, heretics, lunatics, and Rocky Mountain fever tics, that these differences will not be ended by any form of diplomacy in the Middle East and, like it or not, we are heading for the War of Wars in the Middle

East, which will terminate in a final battle of Armageddon.

The children of Ishmael will attack the children of Jacob, and drive Israel into the Negev Wilderness, where they will remain for three and one-half prophetic years. At the end of that time, Islam will be joined by the unbelievers in God’s wrath for the final battle of Armageddon.

It will be a uniting of all unbelievers to completely wipe out the nation of Israel, in an attempt to destroy any belief in the promises of God which came through Isaac, Jacob, and David. All of the saved will be caught up to heaven for judgment on the sounding of the seventh trumpet. They will not be here when the wrath of God is poured out or during the time of the battle of Armageddon.

The saved of all the ages will be in heaven experiencing judgment by Christ at his judgment seat while the battle of Armageddon is raging, during which time God will be destroying “them that destroy the earth” by having seven angels pour out his seven vials of wrath.

Revelation 11:15,18 – And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of his Christ; and he shall reign for ever and ever. [18] And the nations were angry, and thy wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that thou shouldest give reward unto thy servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear thy name, small and great; and shouldest destroy them which destroy the earth.

The religious persecution of both believers and Jews will continue to increase, but the believers will be caught out on the sounding of the 7th trumpet, prior to God’s seven vials of His Wrath, which will be poured to “destroy them which destroy the earth.”

Messianic Jews: We’re subjected to harassment

Members of controversial Jewish sect speak out against ill treatment at hands of religious Jews

in wake of blast that severely injured 15-year-old youth belonging to their community

Police are pushing ahead with the investigation into the explosion that wounded a 15-year-old youth in Ariel on Thursday.

The explosive device is believed to have been concealed in a gift basket similar to those traditionally exchanged during the Purim holiday.

The youth, who belongs to a family of Messianic Jews, is still hospitalized in serious condition at the Beilinson hospital in Petah Tikvah and underwent major surgery well into the early hours of Friday morning. Doctors were forced to sever one of his limbs and warn his eyesight is still in danger.

The Messianic Jewish community has voiced its outrage after initial reports linked the cause of the attack to the youth’s religious affiliation. Some are now saying that the community has long since been subjected to harassment by religious Jews.

The explosion occurred around 2:30 pm on Thursday and Magen David Adom medics as well as police officers were immediately dispatched to the scene. Yarkon Area MDA medic, Nir Katua, said

that the teen sustained severe neck injuries.

Chief Superintendent Mark Amiel reported that the police department “considers this case a criminal investigation and is examining all possible leads in this matter, including the suspected involvement of a cult.”

“All Messianic Jewish communities are still in shock and pain over the incident,” Roni, a family friend, said.

” The feeling is really difficult right now.

The most important thing is that the youth come out of the operating room and the second thing is that we hope that they will catch the person who did this and condemn the phenomenon.”

Roni, also a member of the sect, accompanied the injured teen to the hospital.

“Messianic Jews suffer a lot of harassment and from other types of violence – burning down meeting places, pestering (us) at home, the publishing of announcements with featuring our pictures and more.”

Roni also said that the primary danger threatening the members of the community came from extremist religious organizations – Muslim and Jewish. “There is always a danger from the religious perspective but the question is: Where does it come from?

“We would really like to believe that it doesn’t come from Judaism.

Every Messianic Jew is a target for radical Jews and in the past Messianic Jewish synagogues have even been burned down in Israel.

‘Dehumanization in newspapers’

Caleb Meyers, the representative of the messianic Jewish community in Israel, explains that: “There is a campaign of harassment against the Messianic Jewish community by radical religious organizations that are trying to create dehumanization – especially in religious newspapers.”

Meyers explains that the messianic community, which numbers about 15,000 people in Israel, “sees itself as a legitimate branch of Judaism. The central belief is that the messianic branch is influenced by the Old Testament as well as the New. It’s a bridge between the Jewish and Christian worlds and harassment comes from this because it threatens the worldview of extremist religious bodies that want to uniquely define who is a Jew.”

According to Meyers, “the teen that was hit was the youngest in a family of six brothers who all served in elite units in the IDF. The vast majority of messianic Jews are drafted into the military.”

I do agree with the excerpt from the New York Jewish Week Article by Eric H. Yoffie and the article from Haaretz by Bradley Burston, which both follow our heading.

I have lived, worked, traveled, and served off and on in the midst of all the descendants of the Middle East from the loins of Abraham through the wombs of Sarah, Hagar, and Keturah. I learned to love and trust the Jews and to tolerate the Palestinians. And I must honestly confess favor toward the Jews based on experience. It is unjustly insane to condemn the Jews for their air and ground attacks against Palestinians, which the IAF and IDF conduct in response to the Palestinian rocket and suicide bomber attacks launched against them. It is a certainty Israel would not attack the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip and West Bank if they did not attack them.

The United Nations has become little more than a “Jew-Bashing” society held somewhat in check by a small handful of nations.

I WOULD ADVISE THE NATIONS OF THIS WORLD TO BE WISE IN THE WAY THEY JUDGE THE APPLE OF GOD’S EYE. THE FOLLOWING VERSES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED BY NATIONS AS THEY DEAL WITH ISRAEL.

Preparing U.S. Jews for Assault on Gaza

Israel’s response to the rocket fire directed at its cities has been far more restrained than what would be expected from any other civilized, democratic government.

Since 2001, more than 7,000 rockets have been fired from Gaza at civilian targets in Israel. A “proportionate” response would involve 7,000 Israeli rockets fired at civilians in Gaza.

Is the “occupation” responsible for the rocket fire? Prime Minister Sharon pulled out of every inch of Gaza in 2005, yet there has not been a single day of quiet following that withdrawal. Indeed, rocket strikes significantly increased after it was completed. The simple fact is that if terror and rocket fire were to come to an end in Gaza, Palestinian suffering there would end as well.

Virtually all of Israel’s political leaders are reluctant to escalate the military conflict with Hamas, but most of those to whom I spoke indicated that there would soon be no alternative to an Israeli move against Hamas forces in Gaza. Israel will almost surely decide that it can no longer protect Palestinian civilians at the cost of sacrificing the well being of its own.

Confronted by challenges to its sovereignty, by expand ing attacks on its civilian population, and by the unrelent

ing hatred of an anti-Semitic, religiously fanatic regime, it is moving toward the military action in Gaza that it had desperately hoped to avoid.

This is not a welcome scenario. It would be preferable by far if international diplomacy could arrange a cease-fire that would end the rocket fire without allowing Hamas to build up its forces for future attacks. But chances for such a diplomatic resolution are small, and Israel must prepare

for the worst.

An Israeli attack on Gaza is certain to unleash a barrage of international criticism.

American support will be essential if Israel’s military is to have the time it needs to complete its mission. Our task now is to support Israel in its time of need, to make its case to our fellow citizens, and to do all that we can to rally the Jewish people and good people everywhere to its side.

To the Westerner who ‘understands’ the terrorist

Spare us the explanations.

Spare us the learned, sociology-drenched justifications.

Spare us the reasons why you “get” Palestinians when they gun Jews down in cold blood.

Spare us the chapter and verse on how the plight of the Palestinians is at the root of Islamic terrorism the world over, and if the Palestinians were to receive full justice, Islamic terrorism would pass from the world.

Spare us.

You may well believe, with the blind faith of the hopeful and the fear-stricken, that when these people are through with the Jews, they won’t come for you.

Think again.

Spare us the post-modernism and the radical chic and the guff.

Open your eyes.

When a gunman walks into a Jewish religious seminary at the main entrance to that part of Jerusalem which has been Jewish since 1948, and which was stolen from no one, pay attention.

When he opens fire on religious students hunched over books in a library, firing and firing until blood soaks holy book bindings and open pages of Talmud and the whole of the floor, pay close attention to the reactions of the self-styled people of faith who run Hamas.

Spare us the conclusion that the only reason Hamas kills Jews, and that its underlying motive for encouraging others to do the same, is to force Israel to agree to a cease-fire.

Spare us the “Israel’s policies are responsible for the bloodshed” and “the seminary is, after all, an ideological bastion and symbol of the religious right” and all the other scholarly, arrogant, condescending and amoral ways of saying “they had it coming to them.”

Spare us the understanding for the motivations of the mass murdere

r who kills with God on his lips. Spare us the understanding of the words of the Hamas official who says that after all the Israeli killings of Palestinians, the Jerusalem killings are “our only joy.”

Spare us the sight of the thanksgiving prayers for the great victory, prayers that began in Gaza City mosques just after the slaughter of the Jews. Spare us the sight of the sweets being handed out by little children to motorists in passing cars in the Strip, sweets to celebrate the young Jews dead on the floor, the young Jews dead at their desks, the Jews killed for the crime of being Jews in that place of study and worship.

Spare us the righteousness of those who condemned Baruch Goldstein for entering a holy place with an assault rifle and murdering Palestinians, but who can understand why a Palestinian might do the very same thing,

Open your eyes.

Last week, when Israeli forces drove into Gaza, and some 120 Palestinians were killed, many of them were gunmen, but with children making up another sixth of the total, one grieving father spoke with quiet eloquence, saying “Other places in the world, when this happens, there is a great outcry. When this happens here, the world is silent. No one cares.”

He’s right. The world has grown content to let Palestinians die. The reason is not simple callousness.

And it is not, as Ham

as proclaims to its followers in Gaza, that the Jews control the world media and world finance, and thus Western government as well.

The reason is terrorism.

The world has grown weary of the Islamist’s creed, that only the armed struggle can resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and that the only proper resolution is the end of Israel.

Even the Israeli left, which for decades championed the Palestinian with courage and determination, has, in large part, had it with the Palestinians. The reason is terrorism. The reason is murder. The reason is that the rulers of Gaza are people who see an intrinsic value in the killing of Jews for the sake of increasing the number of dead Jews in the world.

The rulers of Gaza cannot bring themselves to accept the concept of sharing the Holy Land with the Jews.

The best that the rulers of Gaza can do is to bring an end to hope among their own people and ours as well.

They believe that the Jewish state is temporary, and that they Jews will soon abandon it to Islamic rule.

After all this time, you’d think they’d know the Jews a little better.

Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer is one of my all time favorite writers.

His analysis of Obama’s speech cuts to the very heart of the uneven political manipulations of degrees of prejudicial remarks Obama used when referring to a comment by his white grandmother, which he compared it to that of “God Damn America” by his pastor. He referred to her as having a “typical white woman” attitude when she indicated she felt afraid of black men she did not know. There is a great deal of difference with a “typical white woman” saying she feels afraid of some black men, and a pastor, be he black, white, or purple, saying, “God Damn America,” as well as other racial remarks about white U.S. leaders.

Applying illustrative examples of comparisons between his white grandmother’s remark and pastor Jeremiah Wright’s racially inflamed offensive rhetoric,

which he makes from time to time in his preaching, is intellectually dishonest.

In no way do I deny pastor Jeremiah Wright’s right to say what he has said and preached in his ministry. Nor do I deny Obama and his family the right to belong to any church in the world.

That is strictly their business.

But I do believe it is impossible for me to vote for someone who has planted himself in the pew and listened to that sort of rhetoric off and on for some twenty years, and yet is still a member of a church that espouses it.

I am afraid the “change” he intends to bring to this country will include some manifestations of this kind of rhetoric.

When Isaiah advised Israel that a lot of different public figures with certain characteristics were going to be taken away from Jerusalem and Judea, he included one of them with two characteristics which would be found among them.

In Isaiah 3:3, he described this individual as “the cunning artificer, and the eloquent orator.” The Hebrew word used for “artificer” means “a fabricator of material.” Sometimes such a man can weave words into a beautiful enchanting paradise, but the tapestry he eventually weaves by his actions results in a chaotic maze different from what his words promised.

I am afraid that the old political escape message, designed to hold onto the most votes of the maximum number of elements in the racial and ethnic segments of our society, has become the standard for most of our politicians, namely: “Some of my friends are for it, and some of them are against it, and I always stand with my friends” or, “Some of my friends feel strongly about this issue, and some of my friends could care less, and I feel the same as my friends.”

Krauthammer: Obama Fraud Speech

Barack Obama’s speech on Tuesday has been widely hailed as an attempt to deal honestly with the race issue in the U.S. and his longtime pastor Jeremiah Wright, but Washington Post columnist Charles Krauthammer is having none of that.

In an Op-Ed article headlined “The Speech: A Brilliant Fraud,” Krauthammer acknowledges that Obama condemned Rev. Wright’s inflammatory remarks as “wrong and divisive” — without specifying the remarks he was referring to.

But Krauthammer goes on to say: “The question is why didn’t he leave that church

? Why didn’t he leave — why doesn’t he leave even today — a pastor who thundered not once but three times from the pulpit (on a DVD the church proudly sells), ‘God damn America’?

“Obama’s 5,000-word speech, fawned over as a great meditation on race, is little more than an elegantly crafted, brilliantly sophistic justification of that scandalous dereliction.”

Krauthammer opines that Obama’s defense of his relationship with Wright rests on “moral equivalence” and “white guilt.”

For moral equivalence, Krauthammer notes, Obama places his white grandmother at the “other end of the spectrum” from Wright, since according to Obama she “once confessed her fear of black men who passed by her on the street, and who on more than one occasion has uttered racial or ethnic stereotypes that made me cringe.”

Krauthammer writes: “Does he not see the moral difference between the occasional private expression of the prejudices of one’s time and the use of a public stage to spread racial lies and race hatred?”

As for white guilt, Krauthammer observes that Obama’s purpose in his speech was to put Wright’s outrages in the context of history — and by history, “he means the history of white racism…

“What lies at the end of his recital of the long train of white racial assaults from slavery to employment discrimination

? Jeremiah Wright, of course.

“This contextual analysis of Wright’s venom, this extenuation of black hate speech as a product of white racism, is not new. It’s the Jesse Jackson politics of racial grievance, expressed in Ivy League diction and Harvard Law nuance.

That’s why the speech made so many liberal commentators swoon: It bathed them in racial guilt while flattering their intellectual pretensions.”

Krauthammer asserts that Obama “flatters himself as a man of the future transcending the anger of the past as represented by his beloved pastor…

“Then answer this, Senator: If Wright is a man of the past, why would you expose your children to his vitriolic divisiveness?”

The writer concludes: “Why did you give $22,500 just two years ago to a church run by a man of the past who infects the younger generation with precisely the racial attitudes and animus you say you have come unto us to transcend?”

MAHDI ISLAMIC ANTICHRIST MAY BE ON HIS WAY!

The new Iranian President is a “died in the wool” religious Islamic fanatic from the top of his head to the tip of his toes. The Apostle Paul was a “Hebrew of the Hebrews,” and President Ahmadinjad is truly a “Shiite of the Shiites.” He is locked in combat with the old conservative heads.

They have run Iran since the revolution that overthrew the Shah of Iran. He is trying to slip new leaders and departments into his new government. He is trying to get younger key members of the extremists from his Revolutionary Guard into top positions of power, putting out the old leaders who have held power for so long over all governmental decisions. It appears he has another revolution in mind, one in which he

has absolute power to form a very radical Islamic Republic

to replace the current conservative one. I truly believe the religious extremism in the fanatical Shiite beliefs among their literal interpreters is going to unveil the antichrist among them. Both the Sunni and Shiite sects of the Muslim faith believe in a coming Al-Mahdi, which we would relate to by our looking forward to the return of our Messiah Jesus Christ. The Shiites believe he has been hiding in a cave for some 1,100 years, but will soon come out to rule all Islam as the 12th Imam. Many Imams across Iran and Iraq are preaching his coming is very soon, and a fever for his arrival is growing. I do not believe the President of Iran is the one known as Antichrist, but I know he believes the 12th Imam is coming soon.

The President of Iran, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is a Shiite religious literalist, who believes in the imminent return of the 12th Imam. His segment of the Shiite faith believes the 12th Imam went into hiding in the 9th century. The Sunni sect of Islam believes the Al-Mahdi, who is to arise and lead Islam to rule the world and establish a one-world Islamic religion, will be an ordinary man, born to an ordinary woman, and will live an ordinary life with the people of his time. But the Shiites under the same persuasion of their current President, believe that soon the 12th Imam, who disappeared mysteriously in the 9th century, will suddenly appear to lead the Shiites to victory over all enemies starting with the hypocrite mullahs and ending with the Jews. In the Shiite theology, belief in Imams is the cornerstone of their faith. They believe the 12th Imam has been living in a cave for more than ten centuries, and that he will suddenly surface from his hiding place as the Mahdi, their Messiah, and will meet Jesus, the Son of Mary.

They believe Jesus, the Prophet of Allah, will be second in command in that he will pray behind Al-Mahdi. They believe Allah will give Al-Mahdi the ability to rule all the Muslim nations with righteousness in the span of a night.

In the Shiite theology of the religious followers of the current President of Iran, the 12th Imam is still the sole source of legitimate power on the earth. I suspect a man will suddenly arise in Islam claiming to be the 12th Imam. He will declare himself to have returned with the power of Allah but in reality, he will be the antichrist.

Islamic writers indicate the signs in the next paragraph will precede the 12th Imam.

There are many signs that will precede him, a very important sign is that he will come at a time when there is great confutation, intense disputing, and violent deaths – when people are experiencing great fear. Calamities will fall upon people, so much that a man shall not find a shelter to shelter him self from oppression. There will be battles and conflicts before his appearance. The people will be troubled to such an extent that they will long for death. It is then that Imam will arise. The messenger of Allah said

he will be sent at a time of intense disputes and differences among people amidst widespread earthquakes.

It may well be that Paul’s man of sin, the antichrist, is the coming Islamic Al Mahdi.

The 57 Nation Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) met last week in Dakar. One of its greatest desires is the establishment of a great revived Islamic Caliphate.

Muslim nations seek change, new ‘Renaissance’

Islamic summit seeks democracy, dialogue with Christian world as it slams Israeli crimes, US policies.

DAKAR – A summit of Muslim nations on Friday agreed on measures to give their group greater global clout, as the head of the world’s most populous Muslim country Indonesia called for an “Islamic Renaissance”.

The summit’s final declaration attacked the United States, which has named a special envoy to the Organization of the Islamic Conference, for passing sanctions against Syria.

It also condemned “pressure” being put on Iran over its nuclear programme, but “strongly condemned” the Taliban militia and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

The OIC summit adopted a new charter allowing faster decision making and creating new institutions for the 57-nation body.

OIC secretary general Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said the Dakar summit had been “historic” because of the unanimous adoption of the new charter, replacing a 1972 version that he insisted was outdated.

The new constitution streamlines the OIC’s operations, allowing new countries to join with just a majority vote instead of the usual unanimous agreement for which decisions are normally taken.

Agreement was reached after several days of intense talks and despite the absence of several prominent leaders — including Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah, Libya’s Moamer Gathafi and Pakistan’s Pervez Musharraf.

The OIC leaders strongly warned about Islamophobia in the West, complaining that Muslims were often unjustifiably treated as terrorists.

Many leaders called for stronger action by the OIC and western governments to stop “insults” such as cartoons published in Denmark which lampooned the Prophet Mohammed and the looming release of an anti-Islam film by a Dutch far-right MP.

In a speech to the summit, Indonesia’s President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono called for a jihad of peace, including greater democracy and efforts to empower Muslims to restore the religion’s pro-enlightenment and pro-science origin.

“The possibility of an Islamic Renaissance lies before us,” Yudhoyono told the summit, but first, he added: “We need to get our act together as an organisation of Muslim nations.

“When the Islamic Renaissance comes it will be the natural fruit of a peaceful and constructive ‘jihad’.”

Yudhoyono said the OIC was “unique” because it covers three continents and “Muslim countries supply 70 percent of the world’s energy requirements and 40 percent of its raw material exports.”

But he said “protracted conflicts in Muslim societies bring shame” to the Muslim world and meant that “Islam has unjustly been associated with violence.”

“We must disabuse the world of this terrible misconception,” he said, calling for greater efforts against ‘Islamaphobia’ in the West but also greater democracy in Muslim nations.

“We must strive for good governance and attend to our democratic deficit.”

Indonesia, with more than 230 million people, is the world’s most populous Muslim nation and its third biggest democracy.

“History tells us that Muslims in the past contributed immensely to the march of civilization through groundbreaking achievements in the sciences, as well as in arts.” But Yudhoyono added that Islam was now “on the defensive”.

He called for efforts to “improve the plight of the Muslim peoples,” adding that this meant “extensive economic cooperation among ourselves … pooling of resources and plugging of the development gaps all over the Muslim world.”

Yudhoyono said there should be investment schemes and “Islamic free trade areas”.

The summit’s final declaration “condemned” the United States over its sanctions against Syria last year which the leaders called “blatant prejudice in Israel’s favour”.

The declaration attacked the “terrorist and criminal activities” of the Taliban and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan, specifically highlighting the growing number of suicide attacks.

“We continue to strongly condemn all forms of extremism and dogmatism which are incompatible with Islam, a religion of moderation and peaceful coexistence,” the declaration said.

Muslim leaders proposed a high-level international meeting to promote a “dialogue of civilizations” with the Christian world.

“We believe that it is important to plan along such lines a preparatory phase by organizing a major international gathering on Islamic-Christian dialogue that involves governments among other players,” it said.

In an apparent reference to the Palestinian fight against Israel, it said terrorism should be differentiated from “legitimate resistance against foreign occupation”.

Leaders of the OIC — the second largest inter-governmental bloc after the United Nations — had harsh words for Israel, condemning it for “war crimes” against Palestinian civilians.

“The conference denounces the current and increasing Israeli military campaign against the Palestinian people and the serious violation of human rights and war crimes including the killing and injuring of Palestinian civilians,” an OIC statement said.

It called Israel’s “collective punishment of civilians” a violation of international human rights law and said “the occupying forces must be held responsible for these war crimes”.

Muslim leaders acknowledged the challenge.

“We the Kings and heads of state and governments of the OIC renew our pledge to work harder to make sure Islam’s true image is better projected the world over … to combat an Islamophobia with designs to distort our religion,” their communique said.

The summit called on wealthy member states to finance a $10 billion (5 billion pound) solidarity fund aimed at fighting poverty, especially in Africa. Only $2.6 billion has been contributed so far, to the disappointment of African leaders.

“If it’s true that we belong to the same community … then we should be showing more solidarity to each other,” Guinea’s prime minister, Lansana Kouyate, told reporters.

But the summit approved a project to build a railway stretching across the continent from Senegal to Sudan.

One success on the sidelines of the summit was a peace agreement between Sudan and Chad, meant to end cross-border rebel attacks in a region that includes Sudan’s war-torn Darfur. But Chadian rebels said they would fight on regardless.

The next OIC summit will be held in Cairo in 2011.
