An article from the Australian Sidney Morning Herald titled, “Merck halts testing of AIDS Vaccine,” follows one of our old Archive Updates.

This article which follows our year 2000 Archive Prophecy Update 19 is of some importance to me, I suppose because of vanity. When I began doing the lecture series “A Geological Exposition of the Second Coming of Christ” in 1978, I had no idea that it was going to be presented in all the places covered on our Home Web Page. For those of you who have attended the lecture series, I am sure you will remember that from 1981 onwards I made the following statement hundreds of times during the lecture series: “I do not believe they will ever find a vaccination or cure for HIV because it is a prophetic pestilence, and if I am wrong, when they finally do discover one or the other, or both, it will be already be too late!”

Matthew 24:7,8 – For nation shall rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom: and there shall be famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. [8] All these are the beginning of sorrows.

The word “sorrows” is “odin,” which means the type of pain pattern associated with a woman’s birth pains. “Pestilence” is “loimos,” which means “any deadly infectious disorder.”

But what about Matthew’s “pestilence” – Is it following the pattern of a woman’s birth travail for the first time since Jesus prophesied it would? Absolutely! The basic root meaning of the word “loimos,” translated “pestilence,” is simply “any deadly infectious disorder.” Many plagues have passed through mankind since the fall, but none have generated a massive epidemic that was continuously accelerating over a long period of time. These “loimos” have never been able to follow the pattern of a woman’s birth pains for very long on a worldwide basis. Cholera, small pox, typhoid, bubonic plague, and so on, have appeared in short spurts like false labor, but none has ever maintained a persistent, ever increasing, epidemic characteristic with seemingly no end. But now, for the first time, we have a “loimos,” a deadly infectious disorder, that has portrayed these characteristics from its inception. The HIV virus is the first to perfectly match the pattern of a woman’s birth pangs, and it will continue to do so until the travail of the woman Israel ends, and the Son she rejected arrives.

HIV is a virus that has swept across the globe like wildfire. HIV cases worldwide increased from a trace in 1980 to more than 5 million in 1985, to more than 10 million in 1990, to more than 20 million in 1995, and to a whopping 35 million in 2000.

AIDS, the dreadful blossom of HIV, was first reported in a British sailor, who died in England in 1959.

HIV has hardest hit Africa up to this point, but it is poised to spread into Asia and the former Soviet Union as an ever-increasing storm. And, in truth, medical researchers seem no closer to fining a cure than they were twenty years ago.

Are there other “loimos” infections that have also started to demonstrate the patterns of a woman’s birth pangs? Yes! The World Health Organization (WHO) fears that tuberculosis may kill 30 million worldwide during the next decade. The emergence of drug-resistant strains, and the spread of HIV have both hampered efforts by health agencies to slow

the renewed spread of the consumptive illness.

Another sort of “loimos” is malaria, which is on the rise around the world, and once curative treatments are losing their effect.

It is a pestilence of global dimensions, and new strains are evolving that scientists fear will be untreatable.

But what about all the microbes generating all this pestilence, this “loimos,” these deadly infectious disorders, what are they doing, how are they behaving? Are they doing something that will make the pestilences continue to act like a woman’s birth pangs through the tribulation period? Yes! A leading national magazine cover, back in the last century, carried the bold print title: “REVENGE OF THE KILLER MICROBES – ARE WE LOSING THE WAR AGAINST INFECTIOUS DISEASES?” Tuft’s Levy answered the question in Newsweek Magazine by stating: “The rise of drug-resistant germs is unparalleled in recorded biologic history.” Because of this contributing factor, pestilence will become more and more widespread in its acceleration until the second advent of Christ.

Merck halts testing of AIDS vaccine

In a disappointing setback, a promising experimental AIDS vaccine failed to work in a large international test involving countries including Australia, causing the developer to halt the study.

Merck & Co said that it is ending enrolment and vaccination of volunteers in the study, which was partly funded by the National Institutes of Health.

It was a high-profile failure in the daunting quest to develop a vaccine to prevent AIDS.

Merck’s vaccine was the farthest along, considered the most promising and was closely watched by experts in the field.

Officials at the company, based in Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, said 24 of 741 volunteers who got the vaccine in one segment of the experiment later became infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS. In a comparison group of volunteers who got dummy shots, 21 of 762 participants also became infected.

“It’s very disappointing news,” said Keith Gottesdiener, head of Merck’s clinical infectious disease and vaccine research group. “A major effort to develop a vaccine for HIV really did not deliver on the promise.”

Michael Zwick, an HIV researcher at Scripps Research Institute, said it is too soon to know if other vaccines using the same strategy would also fail.

“It’s par for the course in the HIV field,” he said of the Merck result.

The volunteers in the experiment were all free of HIV at the start. But they were at high risk for getting the virus: Most were homosexual men or female sex workers. They were all repeatedly counselled about how to reduce their risk of HIV infections, including use of condoms, according to Merck.

In a statement, the NIH said a data safety monitoring board, reviewing interim results, found the vaccine did not prevent HIV infection. Nor did it limit severity of the disease “in those who become infected with HIV as a result of their own behaviours that exposed them to the virus” – another goal of the study.

Merck’s was the first major test of a new strategy to prevent HIV infection. The first wave of attempts to develop a vaccine tried to stimulate antibodies against the virus, but that hasn’t worked so far.

The new effort – an approach that Gottesdiener said is being tried in most other current research – is aimed at making the body produce more of a crucial immune cell called killer T cells. The goal is to simultaneously “train” those cells, like an army, to quickly recognise and destroy the AIDS virus when it enters cells in the bloodstream.

Dr Anthony Fauci, head of NIH’s National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said other vaccines are in line for testing that use a similar strategy but with important differences. One developed by the NIH – containing the same three genes as the Merck vaccine, plus 3 versions of another gene – is set in January to enter the same large, “proof of concept” testing stage as the Merck vaccine, Fauci said.

Zwick said some researchers are still working on vaccines to neutralise the AIDS virus. He thinks ultimately what is needed is one that combines that approach with a way to stimulate and train killer T cells.

Merck and the HIV Vaccine Trials Network, an international collaboration of researchers and institutions funded by the NIH, co-sponsored the study. The experiment, called STEP, began in December 2004 and had enrolled 3,000 volunteers in Australia, Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Peru, Puerto Rico and the United States.

Wall Street, on a generally upbeat day, showed little reaction to the news, with Merck shares rising 44 US cents to $US51.82 ($A60.22).

Analyst Steve Brozak of WBB Securities said the failure will not hurt Merck’s bottom line in the short term. But he said a vaccine is the only financially feasible way to fight the AIDS epidemic in poor countries and that the company that comes up with the first successful shot would have “a licence to print money”.

The Merck vaccine, known only as V520, was also being tested in a similar study in South Africa and in two smaller studies, which also were halted.

Jittery members of Lebanon’s ruling coalition have gone into hiding, many of them abroad, for fear of meeting the same fate as anti-Syrian MP Antoine Ghanem, who was blown up just days before a key presidential poll.

“There are instructions for us not to move, not to have a fixed agenda, not to use the same vehicles,” said lawmaker Marwan Hamadeh, who survived an assassination bid in October 2004. Several lawmakers blamed the attack which killed Ghanem on Syria and said it was aimed at reducing the slim majority they hold ahead of Tuesday’s vote.

First and foremost, their efforts are directed at killing off members of the Lebanese parliament who oppose Damascus and its policies.

Thus, the majority which the anti-Syrian camp in parliament has enjoyed has been narrowed from 72 to 68.

Another one or two assassinations and this camp will equal the pro-Syrian camp, which is led by Shiite organizations at the head of

which is Hizbullah.

Lebanon leaders seek to ease tension

Rival Lebanese leaders have held discussions to defuse rising tension a day after the assassination of an anti-Syrian lawmaker threatened to derail efforts to elect a new president.

But political sources maintained that a parliament session planned for next week to choose a successor to pro-Syrian President Emile Lahoud would not yield the necessary quorum for a vote and the election would be postponed.

A two-third quorum in the 128-seat assembly requires a political agreement between the anti-Syria coalition that holds a slight majority and the opposition that includes Hezbollah, supported by Syria and Iran.

The sources said Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, an opposition leader allied to Damascus, discussed the fallout of Wednesday’s assassination of Christian MP Antoine Ghanem with majority leader Saad al-Hariri, who is backed by the United States and Saudi Arabia, in a telephone conversation.

“Things are still under control,” a senior opposition source said.

But he said it was virtually impossible that an agreement would be in place

in time to hold the presidential election on Tuesday.

“Things have not collapsed but more time is needed to ease tension. A compromise is still possible, eventually,” the source said. Parliament has until Nov.

23 to elect a president.

Government ministers affirmed their “commitment to holding the presidential elections on time”, Information Minister Ghazi Aridi said after an emergency ministerial meeting. “Terrorism will not intimidate us,” he said.

The UN Security Council called for the election to be held within the constitutional time frame and without foreign interference despite the killing of Ghanem, which it said was a “terrorist attack”.

“On the eve of the crucial period of the presidential election any attempt to destabilize Lebanon, including through political assassination or other terrorist acts, should not impede or subvert the constitutional process in Lebanon,” a Council statement said.

Hebrews 9:23 to 10:18 – It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. [15] Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, [16] This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days,

saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; [17] And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more. [18] Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

Parashat Yom Kippur: Unconditional love

A major aspect of our Yom Kippur liturgy is the service of the High Priest on this Day of Forgiveness. The detailed description of the dramatic service can only be understood in the context of the biblical promise, “For on this day the Almighty will forgive you for all your sins…” Indeed, the High Priest assumes the role of the Community of Israel, and it is to a great extent his proper execution of the service which brings about the forgiving of a nation.

Certainly, the day’s high point – or at least one of its highlights – is when the High Priest enters the Holy of Holies. At that moment comes the loftiest convergence of sanctity in the Jewish year: the holiest of men in

the holiest of places on the holiest of days. The purpose of this sacred entry is to bring the offering of incense, one of the most difficult activities in the Temple. However, the High Priest does not enter this holiest of places only once; he is enjoined to enter it again, much later in the afternoon, when he must first remove his golden garments, bathe a fourth time, and put on the white linen garments. And this second time there is no specific offer ing, certa

inly none mentioned in the Bible or Talmud.

So why does he go in again?

There are those who suggest that he changes clothes this fourth time to enter the Holy of Holies and remove the vessels he brought in on his previous visit. Many commentators suggest that this teaches a critical lesson: one must always clean up after oneself. But why not instruct him to remove the vessels at the end of his first visit

?

I would like to suggest another reason, based on a fascinating instruction found in many High Holy Day prayer books from two centuries ago which begins with the words “Avinu Malkenu” (Our Father our King). Just before the last request in this prayer, “Please be gracious to us for no reason and answer us because we do not have meritorious good deeds; act in righteousness and loving kindness toward us and save us,” there appears the following insertion: “The Holy Ark is to be closed before reciting this petition, and it is to be uttered in a whisper.”

The usual explanation given for this instruction is the following analogy. Imagine that you owe a person $1,000 and are asking him for another $1,000. It’s hard to imagine that you would shout your request for the additional funds, adding that you don’t have the means to pay him back. At best you would reveal your position in an embarrassed whisper.

The great hassidic sage Rabbi Levi Yitzhak of Berditchev, however, would always insist on keeping the Ark open for this last request, and would sing the words out loud in unison with the congregation. He explained his departure from custom with what he believed was the central teaching regarding Yom Kippur: Our God is a God of unconditional love, Who guarantees forgiveness despite our unworthiness and dearth of good deeds.

This is the biblical promise that the Almighty will forgive us on Yom Kippur, as long as we admit our unworthiness and ask for His forgiveness. Hence, there is no greater reason for our rejoicing on this day, even though have no good deeds.

Rabbi Levi Yitzhak’s interpretation is borne out by the magnificent Book of Jonah, which we read toward the conclusion of Yom Kippur.

Jonah attempted to escape from God’s presence because his sense of justice could not abide a God who was a hanun (one who showed grace without cause, in colloquial terms a freier or sucker) who would be willing to forgive the evil people of Nineveh merely because they asked for forgiveness. Jonah’s reluctance notwithstanding, God’s message of being a God

of forgiveness wins the day.

Therefore I would suggest that it behooves the High Priest to enter the Holy of Holies a second time without any offering, any act of service or dedication. The priest concludes the Yom Kippur service by standing before the Almighty just as he is, secure in his faith that God will forgive him and his people.

How Much More Will Israel Take Before Invading The Gaza Strip?

Sooner or later Israel is going to have to stop treating Hamas with kid gloves.

Hamas has made it quite clear that the Israelis are “occupiers” of all the land of Israel, not just the West Bank and Golan Heights, and that the only good “occupier” is a dead “occupier.” The affects of a real blood bath in the Gaza Strip is the main reason the IDF has not already gone in to generate it.

It will solidify the Arab hatred of the so-called “moderate” elements of the Muslim world even more that it is now. The creation of a Palestinian State in the West Bank, and a renegade Hamas Terror State in the Gaza Strip, presents an even more undesirable outcome than the present situation.

A peace agreement to the Muslims is merely a means to an end that results in the elimination of their enemies. The Israeli Prime minister has been saying he has found a peace partner, but the only peace partner Israel will ever find among the Palestinians is a treacherous partner of deceit in a false peace.

ther the description of a practical fact. The government is saying that Gaza has been hijacked by terrorists. It was essentially a warning notice to the world that Israel intends to treat Gaza differently than it has until now and to apply measures it has not used before. The government will apply three restraining principles to its decision.

It won’t carry out any measures immediately, it will give due consideration to the legality of every measure it wants to take, and it will not take measures that would lead to a humanitarian crisis in Gaza. (Jerusalem Post)

Hamas-run Gaza is bracing for a major incursion by Israeli forces after Israel labeled the territory an “enemy entity” on Wednesday. Masked gunmen crouch behind piles of sand, fingers on the triggers of their rifles, while others rig explosives along the streets of Gaza.

Wearing brightly colored headbands, hundreds of militants have taken up positions along the border fence with Israel and in Gaza City, while ordinary people shovel sand into bags to use as barriers to block any invading troops.

IDF-PA Clashes in Central Gaza

(IsraelNN.com) IDF soldiers carried out counter-terrorist operations in the Gaza town of Al-Bureij throughout the day Thursday. Multiple clashes with local Palestinian Authority gunmen led to light injuries among Israeli forces and to at least two deaths among the enemy.

Unconfirmed reports from the Gaza front indicate that three soldiers were lightly injured in Al-Bureij on Thursday evening. Two of the wounded men were hit by shrapnel from a PA mortar shell, while a third soldier was lightly wounded in an RPG attack. They were evacuated to Barzilai Hospital in Ashkelon for treatment.

At least one terrorist wounded in clashes with the IDF was also taken to an Israeli hospital, Be’er Sheva’s Soroka Medical Center, for treatment. One PA terrorist was killed while fighting Israeli troops and a 17-year-old was killed earlier in the day when he was hit by an IDF bulldozer. It is unclear at this stage if the teenager was willingly involved in the Gaza violence.

PA attackers in Gaza fired more than a dozen mortar shells at Israeli soldiers and civilians throughout the day Thursday. Nine shells were launched at Israeli towns and IDF positions in the space of one hour in the late afternoon.

Two landed near the Kerem Shalom crossing, formerly the main crossing into Gaza, which has been closed due to terrorist threats. Seven shells fell near Jewish communities close to Gaza, including one near Kibbutz Miflasim. In one instance within Gaza, a terrorist cell attempted to launch a mortar attack against soldiers, but the shell landed near Arab houses, missing IDF positions.

Earlier in the day, several journalists arrived in the Al-Bureij area in order to document IDF activities in Gaza. They then came under PA mortar attack alongside IDF forces.

No injuries were reported among the journalists, but they were instructed to leave the area following the attack.

In addition to the mortar attacks and clashes in and around central Gaza, at least three Kassam rockets were fired at Sderot by PA terrorists. There were no physical injuries reported in the multiple attacks on the Negev city.

The Jerusalem Post Article describes some of the solar housing that will await the Israelis fleeing there at the beginning of the tribulation period, and Archive Prophecy Update Number 7, which precedes it, gives a perspective of the attack that drives Israel into the Negev.

Syria will lead an Islamic array of nations against Israel.

The well coordinated effort of these nations, aided by the Palestinians within Israel, will be able to initially defeat the woman Israel, and she will be forced to remain in the Negev for three and one-half prophetic years, or 1260 days. According to Zechariah 13:9 to 14:2, only one-third of Israel will make it into the Negev, and the city of Jerusalem will fall to the Islamic conglomerate: “[9] And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God.

[1] Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. [2] For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.” Considering the present number of Jews in Israel (about 4.8 million) if the attack were to occur now, that would mean about 1.6 million Jews would be hedged in the Negev for 1260 days. If the attack were to occur in the distant future that number could reach 2 million. I really do not expect such an attack to occur this year, because it has to first be secretly coordinated behind closed doors, between several Arab nations confederate with Syria, and with the terrorist groups they control.

This will take several years.

I feel confident the attack will not occur before 2003, but I do believe it will occur before 2012.

Exclusive: World Trade Center’s chief engineer to build solar houses in the Negev

Spurred by the 9/11 attacks, Twin Towers chief engineer Hy (Chaim) Brown, who made aliya in 2003, is establishing an Israeli company to build prefabricated solar houses in the Negev.

Brown, 65, whose other achievements include the design and construction of Disney World in Florida, will officially launch the REAL Housing (Renewed Energy for Affordable Living) next month at the College of Judea and Samaria in Ariel, where he is a lecturer.

In an exclusive interview with The Jerusalem Post, Brown, now a resident of

Jerusalem, says his idea to develop the Negev was born out of the Gaza Strip disengagement and lack of government planning for the relocation of the evacuees.

His belief that further withdrawals from the West Bank are in the works, leaving another 100,000 Israelis without an affordable alternative, got him going.

The model of the 70-square-meter houses, which he says can be added onto as families expand, was the brainchild of his engineering students at the University of Colorado, where he commutes to teach.

They twice won a US government-sponsored competition to create a workable home that runs exclusively on solar energy, the second time for building one that families could afford.

The house, fully equipped with appliances – including dishwasher, washing machine, refrigerator, oven and tailor-made items such as a Shabbat heating plate (or, for Beduin needs, a courtyard for livestock) – costs $50,000, and can be assembled from start to finish in two weeks. All it requires to run efficiently, says Brown, is four days of sun per month.

Though perfect for the climate of the Negev, the house can be erected anywhere.

“My idea is to dream big,” he says. “Who knew we’d have Israel?”

Who knew, as well, that the first project Brown worked on as a young engineer in 1967 would come tumbling down 34 years later as a result of a suicide attack?

On the sixth anniversary of the World Trade Center bombings, Brown explains how two 110-story buildings could collapse so quickly and thoroughly, and warns that the only way to avoid similar incidents is to prevent terrorism.

“Every building higher than 12 floors is at risk,” he asserts. “A terrorist can take a 55-gallon drum of airplane fuel up in an elevator, pour it on the floor of one of the stories, ignite it and bring the building down.”

This, Brown elaborates, is because “nothing in a building burns above 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and steel doesn’t melt at that temperature.

Airplane fuel, on the other hand, burns at 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit… [and] there is no fire-proofing design today that withstands [that kind of heat].”

The only way to effectively fire-proof steel columns, he says, is to surround each one with the ceramic tiles used on the space shuttle.

“But no one could afford to move into such an expensive building,” he stresses. “If you build a building for a public function, such as the Knesset, maybe you have an obligation to put that kind of fire-proofing on it. But if you build for a profit – as we did the WTC – you can’t afford to do that.”

Describing the profound effect the September 11, 2001, bombings had on his overall outlook, Brown says, “It dawned on me that these are the same terrorists who have been attacking Israel since 1947, and I felt I had to do something about it.

I don’t know exactly what I had in mind, but I wanted to make some kind of statement.”
