Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has sought to justify his confidence the United States will not attack Tehran, saying the

proof comes from his mathematical skills as an engineer and faith in God, the press reported on Monday.

Ahmadinejad told academics in a speech that elements inside Iran were pressing for compromise in the nuclear standoff with the West over fears the United States could launch a military strike.

“In some discussions I told them ‘I am an engineer and I

am examining the issue.

They do not dare wage war against us and I base this on a double proof’,” he said in the speech on Sunday, reported by the reformist Etemad Melli and Kargozaran newspapers.

“I tell them: ‘I am an engineer and I am a master in calculation and tabulation.

“I draw up tables. For hours, I write out different hypotheses. I reject, I reason.

I reason with planning and

I make a conclusion.

They cannot make problems for Iran.'”

Ahmadinejad has long expressed pride in his academic prowess.

He holds a PhD on transport engineering and planning from Tehran’s Science and Technology University and is the author of several scientific papers.

The deeply religious president said his second reason was: “I believe in what God says.”

“God says that those who walk in the path of righteousness will be victorious. What reason can you have for believing God will not keep this promise.”

Washington has never ruled out taking military action against Tehran, and its tone has sharpened again over the past week with President George W.

Bush warning that Iran’s nuclear programme could lead to a “nuclear holocaust.”

Ahmadinejad said that “God willing” one day he would write his memoirs to put the record straight.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy has already warned that Iran risks being bombed if the nuclear crisis is not resolved. Ahmadinejad last week brushed off the comments which he said were due to his French counterpart’s inexperience.

Maronites are members of one of the Eastern Catholic Churches, with a heritage reaching back to Maroun in the early 5th century. The first Maronite patriarch, John Maron, was appointed in the late 7th century. Today, Maronites are one of the principal religious groups in Lebanon.

Like other Lebanese people, Maronites are overall very genetically similar to other Levantine populations, such as Syrians and Jordanians, with minor foreign genetic influence, though many claim Arab, Phoenician and Frankish ancestry.

Other Maronites, like Walid Phares, claim an Assyrian ancestry.

Maronites have been an Arabic-speaking community since at least the 9th century or earlier, Syriac remains

the liturgical language of the Maronite Church.

Robert Fisk: Strange goings-on here in Lebanon …

Stories that just don’t seem to make it into print.

Did you know that the Hizbollah “Party of God” has installed its own private communications network in the south of Lebanon, stretching from the village of Zawter Sharqiya all the way to Beirut

? And why, I wonder, would it be doing that? Well, to safeguard its phones in the event that the Israelis immobilise the public mobile system

in the next war. Next war? Well, if there’ s not going to be another war in Lebanon, why i

s Hizbollah building new roads north of the Litani river, new bunkers, new logistics far outside the area of operations of the Nato-led UN peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon?

Sayed Hassan Nasrallah, Hizbollah’s leader, boasts of new weapons. The Lebanese suspect that these include anti-aircraft missiles. If this is true – and many Lebanese who have spent their lives under Israel’s cruel air attacks, assaults which have often been war crimes, hope it is – then the next war will be anticipated with dark but keen anxiety. Since the Israeli army is incapable of fighting the Hizbollah on its own ground – its collapse when faced by Hizbollah guerrillas in southern Lebanon last year proved this – what happens if their awesome air power is also neutered?

Fouad Siniora, the Lebanese prime minister, ensconced in his little “green zone” in the old Turkish serail, can do little to alter the course of this coming battle. Supplied with bombs by the Americans so that the Lebanese army can continue to blast its way through the Palestinian Nahr el-Bared refugee camp – one of the most uncovered stories of the Middle East year – his government can do no more than wonder at the resistance of the ruthless non-Hizbollah Islamist insurgents who are still holding out there.

The US ambassador watches approvingly as the Lebanese army continues to “advance” amid strongholds and bunkers at a cost of almost 140 soldiers’ lives although, after four months of “advancing” – as one western NGO remarked to me a few days ago – they might soon, at this rate, reach Cyprus.

One can only reflect on how the US ambassador to Tel Aviv reacts when the Americans supply bombs to the Israelis which are then used on the Palestinians of Gaza.

Weapons are always available to blast away at the Palestinians.

This is Fouad Siniora’s predicament as Hizbollah tries to destroy his government and prevent the election of a non- partisan president next month. Locked into Washington’s embrace as the latest Arab country to prove the spread of George Bush’s fantastical version of democracy in the Middle East, powerless in a country where the only functioning institution is now the Lebanese army, the prime minister finds himself on America’s side in the “war on terror” against Hizbollah’s mentors in Iran. All Hizbollah needed now, poor old Fouad was quoted as saying the other day, was “a composer for a national anthem of their own”.

But there are other fears creating shadows in Lebanon.

One of them is the sectarianism of Iraq.

Lebanon’s Shias and Sunnis and Christians all have friends and family in Iraq. Many have visited their loved ones who

have appeared amid the Iraqi refugee masses that have poured into neighbouring Damascus. For their care, of course, the Syrians have received not a scintilla of gratitude from the Americans who were responsible for creating the hell-disaster of Iraq in the first place. It’s worth comparing the vital statistics (though not on CNN or Fox News): Syria has accepted almost one and a half million Iraqi refugees – caring for them, providing them with welfare and free hospital services – while Washington, when it isn’t cursing Iraq’s prime minister, has accepted a measly 800 Iraqis.

And Lebanon? No one realises that this tiny Arab country has accepted 50,000 Iraqis since the great refugee exodus began. Of course, the Shia Iraqis have moved into the Shia southern suburbs (home of Hizbollah), the Sunni into Sunni areas of Beirut and Sidon,

the Christians into Christian east Beirut and the Metn hills. And because the Lebanese have always called the Iraqis brothers and sisters, there has been no friction between the different Iraqi groups – and this is truly wondrous because only last January, Lebanon’s Shia and Sunni youths were stoning each other in their thousands in the streets of Beirut.

So what else do the Americans have up their sleeve for us out here? Well, an old chum of mine in the Deep South – a former US Vietnam veteran officer – has a habit of tramping through the hills to the north of his home and writes to me that “in my therapeutic and recreation trips … in the mountains of North Carolina over the last two weeks, I’ve noticed a lot of F-16 and C-130 activity. They are coming right through the passes, low to the ground. The last time I saw this kind of thing up there was before Bosnia, Kosovo, and Afghanistan”.

That was in early August. Two weeks later, my friend wrote again. “There were a few (more) C-130 passes… I know that some 75th Rangers have just moved out of their home base and that manoeuvres have gone on in areas that have been used… in the past before assaults utilizing [sic] aircraft guided by small numbers of special operations people.”

And then comes the cruncher in my friend’s letter. “I think that the Bush administration is looking for something to distract Americans before the mid-September report on progress in Iraq. And I believe that the pressure is building to do something about the sanctuaries for the Taliban and foreign fighters along the Pakistan/Afghanistan border…”

A few days after my friend’s letter arrived in Beirut, the Pakistanis reported that the Americans were using pilotless drones to attack targets just inside Pakistan. But it seems much more ambitious military plans may now be in the works.

Stand by for more disasters – from Pakistan to the shores of the Mediterranean. But don’t expect to hear about them in advance.

With Iran shelling across its northwestern border into Iraq against the Kurds, slipping weapons and trained terrorists across the length of its border into Iraq, rushing full steam ahead into development of nuclear weapons, the Pentagon developing a three-day blitz plan for Iran, a new max of 162,000 troops now in Iraq, and a statement by President Bush last week in which he warned that the U.S. and its allies would confront Iran “before it is too late,” I cannot help but find myself wondering if these two articles which follow are not directly connected as one of his reasons for the trip.

Pentagon Three-Day Blitz Plan for Iran

The Pentagon has drawn up plans for massive airstrikes against 1,200 targets in Iran, designed to annihilate the Iranians’ military capability in three days.

Alexis Debat, director of terrorism and national security at the Nixon Center, said last week that U.S. military planners were not preparing for “pinprick strikes” against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

“They’re about taking out the entire Iranian military,” he said.

President George Bush intensified the rhetoric against Iran last week, accusing Tehran of putting the Middle East “under the shadow of a nuclear holocaust.” He warned that the U.S. and its allies would confront Iran “before it is too late.”

US President Bush makes a surprise visit to Iraq

US President George W. Bush made a surprise visit to Iraq on Monday, using the war zone as a backdrop to argue his case that the buildup of US troops is helping to stabilize the nation.

The president secretly flew 11 hours to Iraq as a showdown nears with Congress over whether his decision in January to order 30,000 more US troops to Iraq is working. He landed at an air base in Anbar province west of Baghdad.

Next week, Gen.

David Petraeus, the top US commander in Iraq, and Ryan Crocker, the US ambassador in Baghdad, testify before Congress.

Their assessment of the conflict, along with a progress report the White House must give lawmakers by Sept.

15, will determine the next chapter of the war.

The United States cannot sustain the troop buildup indefinitely. And with Democrats calling for withdrawals and a rising US death toll that has topped 3,700, the president is pressed to give Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki’s much more time to find a political solution

to the fighting.

Bush stopped in Iraq ahead of his visit to Australia for an economic summit with Asia-Pacific leaders.

The trip was a closely held secret for obvious security reasons, although speculation about the trip arose late last month when first lady Laura Bush said she was staying home to tend to a pinched nerve in her neck.

The president, who also went to Iraq on Thanksgiving 2003 and in June 2006, was scheduled to leave for Australia on Monday, but Air Force One took off from Andrews Air Force Base Sunday evening instead.

He was joined by his top advisers, including National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates was traveling there separately. The mission to shore up support for the war was shared w ith only a small circle of Wh

ite House staffers and members of the media, who were told that if news of his trip leaked early, it would be scrapped.

The White House arranged Bush’s trip at a pivotal juncture in the Iraq debate. Some prominent Republican lawmakers have broken with Bush on his war strategy, but so far, most Republicans have stood with him. In exchange for their loyalty, they want to see substantial progress in Iraq soon.

Making his case before the Sept. 15 report de adline, Bush recently delivered

a series of speeches to highlight how the temporary military buildup has routed out insurgents and foreign fighters.

Bush has described what he calls “bottom-up” progress in Iraq and often cites a drop in violence in Anbar Province, once a hotbed of insurgency. The turnaround occurred when Sunni Arab leaders joined forces with US troops to hunt down members of al-Qaida, although it’s unclear whether they’ll back a unified Iraqi government as well.

Critics of the war argue that while the troop buildup may have tamped down violence, the Iraqis are making almost no headway toward political reconciliation.

They cite a handful of gloomy progress reports trickling out of Washington that show some success in curbing violence, but little progress toward political power-sharing agreements.

There are now 162,000 US troops in Iraq, including 30,000 that arrived since February as part of Bush’s revised str ategy to provide security so Ir

aqi leaders could build a unity government.

Prime Minister Olmert has no idea his prophecy of thousands of new Israeli families

in Israel’s vast Negev Wilderness will be fulfilled much, much, sooner that he predicts,

PM gives green light to 7 new Negev communities

Development in the northern Negev received a boost on Tuesday from Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, who approved the creation of a new rural settlement district in eastern Lachish, consisting of seven new communities.

“I welcome today’s decision. The time has come to stop talking and start doing,” said Olmert, who chaired the ministerial committee on settlement affairs that voted on the project, located inside the Green Line.

Olmert predicted that the thinly-populated Negev area was about to be transformed into a “genuine national and tourist treasure.”

Five of the new communities – Hazan, Shomriya, Mirsham, Amatzia and Carmit – are designated for some 200 Gaza evacuee families.

Two others, Hanav and Shekef, are for people who want to help build up the area.

The estimated cost is NIS 300 for infrastructure work and NIS 200 for road work. Overall, some 500 housing units are being laid out as a starting base. The project also includes tourism enterprises, guesthouses and vineyards.

“The region has great potential, and we are interested in it becoming one of Zionism’s major developments in the 21st century,” said Olmert.

“I foresee thousands of families in the area, which will be only 30 minutes from the center of the country on Highway 6,” he added.

Prime Minister’s Office Director-General Ra’anan Dinur, who headed the directoral team that formulated the plan, said, “This is one of the most prestigious areas of the country that the state can offer its residents.” But the plan’s approval does not mean the Gaza evacuees can start building.

There are still a number of bureaucratic steps, and the infrastructure has to be laid out.

Out of the 1,400 evacuee families who have sought to rebuild in a communal setting, only two families

have homes, and only 160 have permission to build.

ne of the larger projects of 250 families in Nitzan. Housing for an additional 319 evacuee families in Nitzanim has been held up due to a dispute with the Ashkelon municipality.

An additional nine projects have start dates scattered from November 2007 to July 2008. Seven projects do not even have start dates, including five of the eastern Lachish communal projects approved on Tuesday.

In a special decree, Khamenei suddenly sacked Gen.

Rahim Safavi and appointed Gen. Mohammad-Ali (Aziz) Jaafari, commander of missile forces, in his place as Revolutionary Guards chief.

Safavi was kicked upstairs as special security adviser to supreme ruler.

DEBKAfile’s Iranian sources disclose: Two years ago, Khamenei entrusted Jaafari, then commander of the corps’ ground forces, with charting a war strategy for the IRGC, the bulwark of the regime,

to meet a foreign attack on Iran. His formal task was to set up the corps’ “center for strategy,” which would be given “unlimited national resources in case of a foreign military confrontation.

The new center was mandated to “draw up the new strategy and the necessary changes to ensure rapid an efficient transformation of the country’s civilian infrastructure and resources to military footing under the control of the IRGC.”

Our sources that Khamenei has now assigned his most trusted adviser in the elite corps with taking supreme command of the IRGC and carrying out the strategy he developed.

This appointment takes Iran a step closer to armed conflict.

DEBKAfile’s sources note that the Revolutionary Guards bear responsibility for Iran’s national nuclear and missile programs. Last month, Washington indicated its intention to designate the IRGC as a global terrorist organization.

Iran claims reaching 3,000 centrifuges benchmark

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad announced Sunday that the Islamic Republic has attained its long sought after goal of running 3,000 centrifuges to enrich uranium for its controversial nuclear program, state media reported.

The UN Security Council had threatened to impose a third round of sanctions against the country if it didn’t freeze its uranium enrichment program which Iran maintains is for peaceful energy purposes, but the US says

is to hide a weapons program.

“The West thought the Iranian nation would give in after just a resolution, but now we have taken another step in the nuclear progress and launched more than 3,000 centrifuge machines, installing a new cascade every week,” the state television Web site

quoted Ahmadinejad as saying.

Meanwhile, the US has drawn up plans to destroy Iran’s nuclear capabilities in three days by carrying out large-scale air strikes against over a thousand targets, a national security expert told the Sunday Times.

According to the report, Alexis Debat, director of terrorism and national security at the Nixon Center, told the Times that the Pentagon plans to “take out the entire Iranian military” and was not interested in conducting “pinprick strikes” against Iran’s nuclear facilities.

The US military, said Debat, arrived at the conclusion that “whether you go for pinprick strikes or all-out military action, the reaction from the Iranians will be the same… very legitimate strategic calculus.”

In related news, Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei named a new head for the elite Revolutionary Guard, an organization Washington is looking to list as a terrorist group, state media announced.

No reason was given for the change Saturday and it was not clear if the reshuffle would affect the possible US move to pressure businesses the corps is thought to control, from construction to oil sectors. The United States accuses the Guard of responsibility for terrorist acts abroad and especially violence against American forces in Iraq.

Khamenei appointed Mohammed Ali Jafari, described only as a senior figure in the hardline force with “valuable experience and shining record,” to replace General Yahya Rahim Safavi, who has led the Guards for the last decade.

The decision comes two weeks after Safavi told the local press that the Guards would retaliate against Washington’s attempts to register it as terrorist.

“America will receive a heavier punch from the guards in the future,” he was quoted as saying on August 16 by t

he conservative daily Kayhan. “We will never remain silent in the face of US pressure and we will use our leverage against them.”

Safavi, meanwhile, was appointed in a separate decree as the supreme leader’ s top advi

ser.

Reshuffles of top military commanders take place with relative frequency among the other branches of the service but the Revolutionary Guards appeared to be the exception with Safavi’s decade-long tenure.

The estimated 200,000-strong Revolutionary Guards answers directly to Khamenei and is seen as a defender of the clerical establishment brought to power by

the 1979 Islamic revolution that swept away a pro-US regime.
