Townsend: U.S. in ‘Heightened Threat’ Environment

WASHINGTON — The United States faces an increased threat of attack from al Qaeda, which will likely try to use battle-hardened associates in Iraq to strike inside the United States, an intelligence report warned on Tuesday.

The unclassified report, part of a classified intelligence estimate delivered to President George W. Bush and Congress, said al Qaeda’s affiliation with al Qaeda in Iraq is helping Osama bin Laden’s militant network recruit operatives.

“We assess that al Qaeda will probably seek to leverage the contacts and capabilities of al Qaeda in Iraq, its most visible and capable affiliate,” said the two-page document of key intelligence judgments on threats facing the U.S. homeland over the next three years

FBI: Iraqis Being Smuggled Across the Rio Grande

The FBI is investigating an alleged human smuggling operation based in Chaparral, N.M., that agents say is bringing “Iraqis and other Middle Eastern” individuals across the Rio Grande from Mexico.

An FBI intelligence report distributed by the Washington, D.C. Joint Terrorism Task Force, obtained by the Blotter on ABCNews.com, says the illegal ring has been bringing Iraqis across the border illegally for more than a year.

Border Patrol officials in the area said they were unaware of the specifics of the FBI’s report, and federal prosecutors in New Mexico told ABCNews.com they had no current cases involving

the illegal smuggling of Iraqis.

The FBI report, issued last week, says the smuggling organization “used to smuggle Mexicans, but decided to smuggle Iraqi or other Middle Eastern individuals because it was more lucrative.” Each individual would be charged a fee of $20,000 to $25,000, according to the report.

The people to be smuggled would “gather at a house on the Mexican side of the border” and then cross the Rio Grande into the U.S., the report says.

“Unidentified individuals would then transport them to train stations in El Paso, Texas or Belen, New Mexico,” according to the FBI document.

The FBI in New Mexico had no immediate comment.

Until recently, the United States has kept its doors all but shut to the estimated two million refugees fleeing the violence in Iraq.

Until this year, the country had taken in fewer than 800 Iraqi refugees, according to the State Department.

This May, the Bush administration pledged to resettle 7,000 Iraqi refugees here by the end of the year.

‘Syria ready to talk peace but not via secretive channel’

“A number of delegations that have visited Syria have delivered messages from the Israeli prime minister by which he is seeking peace. One even came during the Second Lebanon War.

We consider this a positive step but our official policy is against a secretive channel of negotiations,” Syrian President Bashar Assad, who began on Tuesday his second seven-year term, said during an address he delivered before the Syrian parliament.

Assad called on Israel to publicly announce its intentions if the Jewish state indeed desired to make peace with Syria.

The Syrian leader asserted that his country’s stance was “clear” and that what was required to proceed with negotiations was “a formal announcement for the aspiration of peace [made by Israel].”

Furthermore, he stressed, any peace negotiations would be based on Israel returning to pre-1967 borders.

Such conditions, said Assad, would need to be made clear by any “serious” peace envoys.

Assad demanded “minimum” evidence that Israel was willing to formalize a peace agreement, citing the ‘Rabin Pledge,’ a promise made by late prime minister Itzhak Rabin to Assad’s father, Hafez al-Assad, in which he unofficially gave his word that Israel would withdraw from the Golan Heights in return for a complete peace agreement with Syria.

Although the pledge was never documented, Syria still holds it as a platform for potential talks.

The Title of the Haaretz Article which follows is typical Persian sword rattling.

It is sort of like the advertised circus sideshow “come-on” used by the “barker,” when he says: “Come on, Come on, Come on in here, and hear the man who speaks 600 different languages!” What he fails to mention is that only one of them can be understood!

What the Persian “barker” of this Bazaar fails to mention is that of the 600 targets flagged on his huge blowup of Israel in the War Room, he only has 200 Intermediate Range Missiles available to launch, and only 25 of them can be launched on 30 m

inutes notification, 9 of which are likely to misfire, and 12 will probably be intercepted by a very effective Israeli antimissile defense, followed by two missing their targets to fall in the Dead Sea.

Report: Iran has 600 targets for missile strike in Israel if attacked

The Qatari newspaper Al Watan on Sunday quoted diplomatic sources in Damascus as saying that Iran has marked 600 targets in Israel for missile strikes in case it is attacked.

The report said

the targets are within reach of Iranian missiles and would be completely destroyed if Israel should attack

Iran or participate in an American attack on the country.

Iran’s warning refers to talk in Israel and the United States of a possible military strike to prevent the Islamic republic from attaining nuclear capability.

The sources, which were described as both “international” and Arab, told Al Watan they do not expect a war to break out between Israel and Syria this summer.

Also Sunday, Iran’s foreign ministry said Tehran will remain steady in pursuing its disputed nuclear program, and hopes the United Nations Security Council won’t sanction it for this.

“Nuclear activities of Iran continue in a defined and clear framework,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said at his weekly news conference.

He dismissed earlier reports that Iran had slowed down the pace of its uranium enrichment program.

The Security Council has imposed two sets of sanctions on Iran since December of last year, over the country’s refusal to halt enrichment.

A third resolution is being pushed by the United States and its allies at the Council, and Hosseini acknowledged Sunday that Iran was bracing for this.

“The third resolution would have its impact on Iran,” the spokesman said.

Hosseini said Tehran would try to avoid the new sanctions by pursuing a policy that steers its nuclear program away from Security Council scrutiny.

This statement appeared to refer to an agreement reached last week between Iran and the UN’s nuclear watchdog for a new negotiations framework.

Iran contends its nuclear program is purely peaceful, but the United States and its allies suspect enriched uranium could be used to make atomic bombs.

The UN’s International Atomic Energy Agency said on Friday that Tehran had agreed to answer questions on past nuclear experiments and would allow UN nuclear inspectors to visit facilities they

had previously been barred from.

Any Iranian decision to cooperate with the IAEA could weaken the push for new UN sanctions – even if Iran continues to defy the council’s main demand that it freeze uranium enrichment.

Israeli Chemical Attack Vulnerability countered by Several Factors!

There is little likelihood that Iran and Syria will launch a first-strike chemical or biological missile attack against Israel. The same likelihood will apply if and when the Iranians develop a nuclear arsenal mounted on Shihab missiles.

The most obvious reason is their complete awareness of the vast arsenal of chemical, biological, and nuclear Israeli warheads, which would be airborne and screaming toward pre-targeted Iranian and Syrian targets before their first warhead ever hit the Israeli launching sites

in the vast Negev.

The second obvious reason is the high casualty count of Arab allies such an attack would produce in Israel and the Islamic countries around her. WMD’s do spread their effects over wide areas with no respect of race, color or creed.

This is a discipline in which I was well trained while on active duty in the Middle East and other foreign zones of conflict.

The third would be the cert ainty of

a nuclear attack against both of them by the United States, which would completely wipe out their military capacity to conquer the nation of Israel.

All President Bush needs is a valid excuse to justify it internationally. Delete this reason as being valid on December 31, 2008.

The fourth would be the atomic radiation airborne particles that would be spread as nuclear fallout across the entire Middle East, which would contaminate that zone for quite a while. Only heaven knows how many atomic fallout patterns I prepared on active duty

The fifth, and perhaps most compelling reason, is simply this – Islam can win a conventional war against Israel, but has no chance of winning a WMD war.

All of these reasons amount to Iran and Syria shooting themselves in their heads, hoping the bullet will go through and strike their worst enemy on the opposite side.

They are too cunning to be that stupid!

Israel vulnerable to chemical attack

The home front is woefully under-protected from the dangers of a chemical weapons attack, according to a damning report released on Monday by a subcommittee of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee headed by Likud MK Yuval Steinitz.

The report’s authors are urging that NIS 1 billion be spent this year to ensure that residents of Haifa and the North are provided with gas masks and other equipment in case of a chemical attack.

The system by which gas masks have been collected from Israeli citizens to be renewed and stored in warehouses for distribution in the event of an emergency is flawed, according to the report.

at such a distribution could be completed in a few days, if necessary, are empty, the report said. In fact, distribution would take many weeks, it said.

Former OC Home Front Command Maj.-Gen. Zeev Livne, told Army Radio on Monday that while the situation was not “particularly good,” there was no need to worry.

Livne said that gas masks should be collected en masse and handed out only in the face of an imminent threat.

“Assuming that what’s [in the report] is correct, the situation isn’t encouraging regarding protection from chemical weapons. However, there is no need for hysteria… but [rather] to act, and I know that steps are being taken,” the commander said.

Sons of Aaron – The Priestly Tribe – Convene in Jerusalem

(IsraelNN.com) A four-day International Conference of Descendants of the biblical figure Aaron, the Priestly Tribe (Kohanim) and the whole Tribe of Levi to which the Kohanim are a part, begins on Sunday, July 15.

“Bring forth Aharon’s sons….Then anoint them, just as you anointed their father, so that they will be Kohanim (“priests”) to Me. It will be done so that their anointing will make them an eternal [hereditary] priesthood for all generations.

Moses proceeded to do exactly as G-d had commanded him.” (Exodus 40:14, 15)

Throughout Jewish history and to this day, Jews are careful to note which families belong to the tribe of Levi and the priestly family of Aaron. At the special gathering this week in Jerusalem, they will learn more about their roots and discuss the latest research proving their genetic ties.

The International Conference of Kohanim and the Tribe of Levi falls on the first day of the Hebrew month of Av and the beginning of the nine-day period leading up to Tisha B’Av, the second-most solemn fast day in the Jewish calendar.

It is also the date on which Aharon the High Priest, brother of Moses left this world to enter the World to Come.

Recent scientific research and DNA testing has allegedly proven a genetic connection between the descendants of the Tribe of Levi, the biblical priests and their assistants who began with the sons of Aharon.

Project director Professor Karl Skorecki, one of the main researchers in the seminal “Kohen Genetic Signature” study, is scheduled to present the findings Monday, July 16 at 11:30 a.m. in “HaKotel Hall” auditorium, near the Western Wall Plaza.

“This is not only the first family reunion of the Jewish priestly dynasty in nearly 2,000 years,” said conference organizer Rabbi Yaakov Kleiman in a statement sent to the media.

“The research and information we will share will play an important role in appreciating and maintaining our unique and precious heritage.” Rabbi Kleiman is the director of The Center for Kohanim in Jerusalem and the author of “DNA & Tradition.”

Molecular geneticists have recently discovered the “Kohen Modal Haplotype,” a Y-chromosome DNA lineage signature shared by a majority of both Ashkenazic and Sephardic Kohanim.

This indicates direct patrilineal descent of present-day Kohanim from an ancient ancestor, genetically dated to have lived approximately 3,000 years ago, corresponding to the time of the Exodus from Egypt.

Kohanim and other “members of the tribe,” the Levi’im (Levites), are being invited to participate in what has been billed as the “first ‘family reunion’ held since the days of the Temple in Jerusalem.”

Four days of seminars, touring, presentations of the latest research and lectures by leading rabbis and scientists on such topics as genetic genealogy, biblical history and contemporary issues in the Jewish legal arena will be offered in English as well as Hebrew.
