The Doctrine of Mahdism

According to Shi’ite tradition, the Twelve Imams, descendants of the Prophet Muhammad’s cousin and son-in-law Ali Ibn Abi Talib, were endowed with divine qualities that enabled them to lead the Shi’ite believers and to function as Allah’s emissaries on earth. However, when the Twelfth Imam, Muhammad Al-Mahdi, disappeared in 941 CE, his connection with the Shi’ite believers was severed, and since then, the Shi’ites are commanded to await his return at any time.

Immediately upon assuming the Iranian presidency, Ahmadinejad began to assert his belief in the imminent return of the Mahdi as the basis for his political activities. Despite the traditional belief that no one can foresee the hour of the Mahdi’s return, Ahmadinejad frequently stated that his coming was nigh, and even gave a more specific prediction. During a meeting with the foreign minister of an Islamic country, he said that the crisis in Iran “presaged the coming of the Hidden Imam, who would appear within the next two years.”

The messianic doctrine of Mahdism is also manifest in Iranian foreign policy, especially in its attitude toward the Western superpowers and toward the nuclear program. Ayatollah Mesbah-e Yazdi, mentor to Ahmadinejad, expressed this approach in an October 11, 2006 speech: “The greatest obligation of those awaiting the appearance of the Mahdi is fighting heresy and global arrogance [i.e., the West, primarily the U.S.].” Ahmadinejad and his close circle do not avoid confronting the West, since they consider this struggle to be one of the ways

to prepare the ground for the return of the Mahdi. (MEMRI)

It is quite possible that this Mahdi for which they are waiting is the one we identify as the Antichrist, the willful king, and the king of the north.

Daniel 11:36 – And the king shall do according to his will; and he shall exalt himself, and magnify himself above every god, and shall speak marvellous things against the God of gods, and shall prosper till the indignation be accomplished: for that that is determined shall be done.

He is to “prosper till the indignation be accomplished,” refers to the final “consummation” of the Age of the Gentiles, when the willful king and his armies are crushed at the end of the tribulation period in the final battle of Armageddon.

Daniel 9:27 – And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

“That determined” which “shall be poured upon the desolate,” refers to the horrific punishment from which no one can render help to the king or his great army at Armageddon.

Daniel 11:45 to 12:1 – And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him. [12] And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book.

Revelation 19:16-21 – And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS. [17] And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God; [18] That ye may eat the flesh of kings, and the flesh of captains, and the flesh of mighty men, and the flesh of horses, and of them that sit on them, and the flesh of all men, both free and bond, both small and great. [19] And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. [20] And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image.

These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. [21] And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

THE 40 WEEKS OF DANIEL’S 9:24-29 PROPHECY – Part 8

For many years I have challenged anyone to produce a book published as a commentary on the Bible prior to 1740 that taught or showed the following:

1. The “HE” in Daniel 9:27 as representing the future antichrist.

2. The “rapture” occurring at, or before, the “first of the week.”

3. The “rapture” occurring in the “middle” of the week.

4. A “last of the week” diagram divided into two 1260 sections.

I am not saying that 1 to 4 do not exist. I am saying I have searched diligently for many years, and have never been able to find such books or publications before 1740. So what will I do if someone ever answers the challenge and does present such a legitimate published document?

I will simply ask this question – Why is this book the only one floating in the midst of a sea of publications that teach otherwise? One of the strongest natural instincts in the human nature we brought out of our mother’s womb is “ACCEPTANCE.” And anyone who is blind to the effect that it has on their way of thinking in a society based on religious, social, and group ACCEPTANCE, is indeed blind to what could be the greatest motivation factor in what they teach, and why they teach it. I was made ACCEPTABLE to God by grace through faith some 61 years ago, and now I persuade men to be well pleasing (ACCEPTABLE) to him rather than to men. To be ACCEPTABLE (well pleasing) to God does not always mesh with being ACCEPTABLE (well pleasing) to man.
Ephesians 1:6 – To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us ACCEPTED in the beloved.

II Corinthians 5:9-11 – Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be ACCEPTED of him. [10] For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good or bad. [11] Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.

There are two different inspired words translated as “accepted” in these two Scriptures. The one in II Corinthians means “well pleasing.”

Colossians 3:23-25 – And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; [24] Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ. [25] But he that doeth wrong shall receive for the wrong which he hath done: and there is no respect of persons.

THE PROPHESIED DESOLATIONS OF JERUSALEM!

What Did the Jews Know from Daniel 9:24-27?

Daniel 9:1,2 – In the first year of Darius the son of Ahasuerus, of the seed of the Medes, which was made king over the realm of the Chaldeans; [2] In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books

the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet that he would accomplish seventy years in the DESOLATIONS of JERUSALEM.

They knew that the 70 weeks of years (7 X 70 = 490), during which the desolations of Jerusalem would occur, were to begin as stated in Daniel 9:25.

Daniel 9:25 – Know therefore and understand, that FROM the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem UNTO the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.

The 490 years were to begin when the commandment to restore and rebuild Jerusalem was issued, which some thought was the Artaxerxes Longimanus commandment issued in 457 BC.

And they knew it would be 483 years when Messiah the Prince arrived to fulfilled the last 7 years (7 + 62 = 69 weeks of years = 69 X 7 = 483 years).

However, after completing the 484th, 485th, and 486th years, he was cut off (crucified) by the Jews between the 486th and 487th years, that is, in the “midst” of the seven year period, between the third and fourth years. The word AFTER in 9:26 is a continuous running narration of 9:25 and, as such, is understood to contain the seven weeks without repeating them, hence the Messiah was to be cut off AFTER the 69th year DURING the 70th week of years.

Daniel 9:26 – And AFTER threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.

According to the preponderance of the evidence, Jesus was born in 4 BC, and came as the Messiah the Prince to be baptized by John in 27 AD at age 30, which was the age a man could be a priest in the line of Aaron, and it was this event that marked the beginning of the 484th year since the 457 BC commandment to restore and rebuild Jerusalem had been issued. Jesus began the last week of Daniel’s 70 weeks when he was baptized. He completed more than three years of it, but less than three and one half years, probably leaving some 1335 days to be completed before the final desolations of Jerusalem were completed.

Daniel 12:12 – Blessed is he that waiteth and cometh to the thousand three hundred and five and thirty days.

The completion of the 1335 days marks “the end of the days” in Daniel’s 490 year prophecy, and Daniel will stand on this earth in his resurrected glorified body at that time.

Daniel 12:13 – But go thou thy way till the end be: for thou shalt rest, and stand in thy lot at the end of the days.

Daniel 9:2 – In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish SEVENTY YEARS in the DESOLATIONS of JERUSALEM.

Daniel 9:27 – And HE shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week HE shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations HE shall make it DESOLATE, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.

All three of the “HE’s” are the Messiah the Prince, who was cut off (crucified) between the 486th and 487th year of Daniel’s 490 year prophecy.

FIRST DESOLATION OF JERUSALEM (SPIRITUAL)

The first desolation of Jerusalem occurred when the Messiah the Prince declared it to be spiritually desolate just before he was cut off from Israel by crucifixion.

Matthew 23:37-39 – O Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them which are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered thy children together, even as a hen gathereth her chickens under her wings, and ye would not! [38] Behold, your house is left unto you desolate. [39] For I say unto you, Ye shall not see me henceforth, till ye shall say, Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

SECOND DESOLATION OF JERUSALEM (PHYSICAL)

The second desolation of Jerusalem, which followed the rejection of the Messiah the Prince, occurred in 70 AD when Titus destroyed the Temple and the City.

Luke 21:24 – And they shall fall by the edge of the sword, and shall be led away captive into all nations: and Jerusalem shall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

THIRD DESOLATION OF JERUSALEM (PHYSICAL)

The third desolation of Jerusalem occurred in 135 AD when Hadrian finished the desolation of Jerusalem and gave it the name of a Roman city.

FOURTH DESOLATION OF JERUSALEM (PHYSICAL)

The last desolation of Jerusalem will occur when the antichrist overruns it, sits on the temple mount, even “showing himself that he is God.”

Daniel 11:41 – He shall enter also into the glorious land, and many countries shall be overthrown: but these shall escape out of his h and, even Edom,

and Moab, and the chief of

the children of Ammon.

Daniel 11:45 – And he shall plant the tabernacles of his palace between the seas in the glorious holy mountain; yet he shall come to his end, and none shall help him.

II Thessalonians 2:4 – Who opposeth and exalteth himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sitteth in the temple of God, shewing himself that he is God.

Zechariah 14:1,2 – Behold, the day of the Lord cometh, and thy spoil shall be divided in the midst of thee. [2] For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle; and the city shall be taken, and the houses rifled, and the women ravished; and half of the city shall go forth into captivity, and the residue of the people shall not be cut off from the city.

The attack of antichrist will mark the beginning of the last three and one half unfulfilled years of Daniel’s 490 years, and the 490 years will be completed at the Second Advent of the Messiah the Prince.

Luke 21:25-28 – And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; [26] Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. [27] And then shall

they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. [28] And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

I Peter 1:18-21 – Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; [19] But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

RESTORATION OF JERUSALEM (SPIRITUAL & PHYSICAL)

Isaiah 62:1-12 – For Zion’s sake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerusalem’s sake I will not rest, until the righteousness thereof go forth as brightness, and the salvation thereof as a lamp that burneth. [2] And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the Lord shall name. [3] Thou shalt also be a crown of glory in the hand of the Lord, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God. [4] Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzi-bah, and thy land Beulah: for the Lord delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married. [5] For as a young man marrieth a virgin, so shall thy sons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so shall thy God rejoice over thee. [6] I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence, [7] And give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth. Isaiah 12:1-6 – And in that day thou shalt say, O Lord, I will praise thee: though thou wast angry with me, thine anger is turned away, and thou comfortedst me. [2] Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the Lord Jehovah is my strength and my song; he also is become my salvation.

[3] Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of salvation. [4] And in that day shall ye say, Praise the Lord, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. [5] Sing unto the Lord; for he hath done excellent things: this is known in all the earth. [6] Cry out and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion: for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.

Hoping for a Long-Term Hudn

Hopefully, One day we will wake up to find ALL of the In-Country Terrorist Groups have agreed to a Long-Term Hudna (ceasefire), and then we can get a better idea of how close we are to the start of the long awaited final Middle East War.

Sooner or later, hopefully sooner, one of these cease fires will turn into a long term Hudna, but first we must see a short term truce, like the one proposed by Hamas in the Haaretz article which follows, in which ALL, REPEAT ALL, of the terrorist groups groups accept and begin to truly practice it.

The other extremist terror groups, such as the Islamic Jihad and al-Aksa Martyrs Brigades, must also come on board.

Report: Hamas may agree to new one-year cease-fire with Israel

Hamas deputy political leader Moussa Abu Marzouk told the Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram that his organization may be willing to agree to a new one-year cease-fire with Israel, Israel Radio reported Saturday.

According to the radio report, Abu Marzouk said Palestinians need mutual and comprehensive calm in both the Gaza Strip and the West Bank.

Regarding abducted Israel Defense Forces soldier Gilad Shalit, the Damascus-based leader said prisoner exchange talks were halted because Israel rejected the list of prisoners Hamas wants freed.

He added that no progress on the issue would be possible unless Israel changes its position.

Hamas political leader Khaled Meshal said his organization would be willing to stop firing rockets at Israel if Israel stops its targeted killings of Hamas militants, a senior Palestinian official told Israel Radio late Friday.

The Palestinian source said Meshal made the offer during a telephone conversation with Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al-Thani.

The Qatari prime minister later called Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to update him on his conversation with Meshal, the radio reported.

A senior Israeli official said Saturday that Israel must respond ‘doubtfully and carefully’ to the offer, the radio reported.

According to the radio, Hamas has not fired rockets at Israel in the past three days. However, the group’s armed wing said the lull in rocket attacks does not signal a decision to restore the calm with Israel, but rather is part of its overall strategy.

Sacrilege of a Muslim Cemetery beneath a Pinnacle of Herod’s Temple!

In New Testament times, while Herod’s Temple stood, sometimes the word ‘Temple’ applied only to the building housing the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies, but at times it referred to the outer walls and the entire temple platform they surrounded. In Luke 4:9, “a pinnacle of the temple” refers to the southeast corner of the temple wall, which stood high above a deep drop-off into the Kidron Valley.

It still stands there today east of the Al-Aksa Mosque. It is quite a climb up this very steep incline rising from the base of the Kidron Valley to the base of the wall below the pinnacle. It is on the slope below and to the north of it that the Muslims want

to link up with the Muslim cemetery by the Golden Gate.

I never realized how emphatic the Muslims were in having a cemetery in front of the Golden Gate, until one year when I went there after a period of very heavy rainfall. A huge grave with many skeletons in it had caved in to expose them in a very large container directly under the Golden Gate. I would guess there were 10 to 15 skeletons in this mass grave. I now realize that Muslims really thought this would keep the Jewish Messiah from making a Second Advent entry into Jerusalem through the Golden Gate. The next time I went back, a fresh cement layer had been poured over the sunken section containing the skeletons.

Luke 4:9-13 – And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence: [10] For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee: [11] And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone. [12] And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. [13] And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

Since there is no biblical record of Jesus going to Tiberius, I assume he did not go there because Tiberius was built over a huge cemetery, and he would not have gone there because it was absolutely essential for him to keep every jot and tittle of the Law. But he has already kept every jot and tittle of the Law and offered himself as the sinless sacrifice for all my sins.

And the Law requirements concerning the rules governing the uncleanness associated with dead bodies is no longer applicable. But I will assure you there will be no dead bodies under the Millennial Gate when he passes through it after it has been completed.

Matthew 5:17,18 – Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil. [18] For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

Luke 16:17 – And it is easier for heaven and earth to pass, than one tittle of the law to fail.

Luke 16:14-16 – And the Pharisees also, who were covetous, heard all these things: and they derided him. [15] And he said unto them, Ye are they which justify yourselves before men; but God knoweth your hearts for that which is highly esteemed among men is abomination in the sight of God. [16] The law and the prophets were until John: since that time the kingdom of God is preached, and every man presseth into it.

Galatians 3:13,14 – Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: [14] That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Colossians 2:13,14 – And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses; [14] Blotting out the handwriting of ordinances that was against us, which was contrary to us, and took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross;

I Corinthians 1:18 – For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.

Romans 2:28,29 – For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: [29] But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

Colossians 2:9-11 – For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. [10] And ye are complete in him, which is the head of all principality and power: [11] In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:

The present Golden Gate will collapse and crumble into rubble after the two witnesses are caught up. The new Temple of Ezekiel 43 and its new Gate will be built after Messiah returns at his Second Advent.

Revelation 11:11-13 – And after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them. [12] And they heard a great voice from heaven saying unto them, Come up hither.

And they ascended up to heaven in a cloud; and their enemies beheld them. [13] And the same hour was there a great earthquake, and the tenth part of the city fell, and in the earthquake were slain of men seven thousand: and the remnant were affrighted, and gave glory to the God of heaven.

Ezekiel 43:1-5 – Afterward he brought me to the gate, even the gate that looketh toward the east: [2] And, behold, the glory of the God of Israel came from the way of the east: and his voice was like a noise of many waters: and the earth shined with his glory. [3] And it was according to the appearance of the vision which I saw, even according to the vision that I saw when I came to destroy the city: and the visions were like the vision that I saw by the river Chebar; and I fell upon my face.

[4] And the glory of the Lord came into the house by the way of the gate whose prospect is toward the east. [5] So the spirit took me up, and brought me into the inner court; and, behold, the glory of the Lord filled the house.

Israel stops Muslim burials near Temple Mount

Israel has for the past several months been preventing Muslims from burying their dead in a patch of land outside the Temple Mount walls designated as an archeological site, reported Ha’aretz.

A Muslim cemetery already stretches along the south-eastern wall of the Temple Mount in an attempt to block the prophesied return of Israel’s Messiah through the Golden Gate.

A few years ago, local Muslims decided to extend the cemetery by taking over adjacent land belonging to Israel’s Antiquities Authority.

Jerusalem police originally refused to take action, fearing that halting the burials would lead to violent Muslim riots.

But a recent petition backed by leading Israeli academics, archeologists and political figures convinced the High Court and Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter to put an end to the illegal Muslim activity.

Top archeologists said the area the Muslims were trying to take over has huge historical significance. They hope to one day soon excavate there and learn more about the First and Second Temples that once stood on the location.

The article from the Jerusalem Post closes as the last paragraph states: “The failure to systematically hold states accountable for terrorism is the fundamental weakness of the international response to the Islamofascist threat since 9/11. Until this changes, new conflicts, like the current one in northern Lebanon, will continue to ‘burst out’.”

I have contended for many years that the final major Middle East war will be triggered by a Syrian-Hizbullah trap designed to make Israel look like the aggressor because they lured her to push north across the Syrian-Lebanon border.

The war will literally ‘burst out’.

THE INTERNATIONAL JUSTIFICATION BLAME GAME!

WE DID IT BECAUSE THEY ATTACKED US FIRST!

The age of so-called civilized warfare really began in the era

of the Napoleonic Wars of 1803 to 1815.

And, with the passage of time, it has become increasingly important for the two countries involved in a conflict to convince the rest of the world the other is the culprit who started the conflict. Every time Hitler, in his early conquests, marched his troops into countries to take them over in bloodless battles, he always had an excuse to justify his attacks. Finally, when he came to his planned conquest of the Poles, he could not really find what even remotely seemed like a justifiable reason.

So he manufactured one. He had his own SS troops dress up in Polish uniforms and attack a German border outpost. Then the SS put dead Polish bodies in the immediate vicinity of the outpost and had photographers and reporters in to verify their story. Using this farce as justification for his actions, he attacked Poland in September of 1939, and World War II began.

Some interesting developments, involving Iran, Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and the terrorist groups, particularly Hizbollah, have been occurring along the northern border of Israel with Lebanon. I do not believe what I am now observing in that area will lead to a major war in 2007, but I suspect it may well do so in the not too distant future. And, if I am correct in my assumptions, it could give Syria justification for attacking Israel in the eyes of most of the international world. It has, for some time, been my guesstimate that the final major war is likely to break out at some point in time after 2007, but before 2013.

President Bush has demanded that Syria cut it’s backing for the Hizbollah terrorists that operate along the southern border of Lebanon, and that it expel the other Palestinian terrorist groups it currently has operating out of Syria. Damascus now hosts 10 Palestinian terrorist groups, which include the extremist groups Hamas and the Islamic Jihad. In response to the demands of President Bush, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said: “Syria supports the Lebanese national resistance, including Hizbollah, in resisting Israeli occupation and liberating land.” Concerning the demand that the other terrorist groups in Syria be removed, he said: “Their work is limited to political and media activities, and their offices in Damascus provide political representation to the 400,000 Palestinians who look to attain their rights and return to their land.” Israel has repeatedly warned Syria that if Hizbollah continued its border attacks on Israeli civilians and troops on its northern border, they would start hitting targets in Syria in retaliation. Bashar has responded by saying that Syria would defend itself against any Israeli action. He said: “If the Israeli government involves itself in waging aggression on the territory of Syria, then Syria will defend itself.”

Bashar al-Assad has joined with Iran to provide heavier rockets for the Hizbollah arsenal of terror. Israeli officials have watched Hizbollah deploy thousands of new missiles and rockets that are aimed at Israeli civilian population centers.

Once Israel has completed its long buffer zone fence around the West Bank in 2008, and beefed up the one it already has around the Gaza Strip, it will become confident it has finally achieved the impossible, it will say it has “peace and safety.” And all the time that it was tied up internally in so doing, Syria, Iran, Iraq, and Lebanon will have been slowly slipping troops in position for a lightning Jihad from the north. Israel’s preoccupation with its internal safety is going to cause them to slack off in their gaze on what is going on externally.

During the time that Alexander’s great empire had been divided into four sections, the Syrian section (Seleucid) held Israel some of the time, and the Egyptian section (Ptolemy) held it when they took

it from the Syrians. At times Israel was a part of the Egyptian section, at times a part of the Syrian section, and at times a part of both. Daniel lists a very long series of battles between the king of the north (Syria) and the king of the South (Egypt). Most of Daniel’s prophecies about these two kingdoms were fulfilled by their many kings from Daniel 11:4 through 35, but there remains one war yet to be fulfilled, and I believe it is the aforementioned Jihad that begins in Daniel 11:40. Since Israel was once part of the section occupied by Ptolemy, I am persuaded that Israel is the king of the south and Syria is the king of the north in Daniel 11:40-45.

I suspect that after Israel has lulled itself into a false sense of peace and safety by its military might, it will have gained even more confidence in its great ability to take care of any Islamic intrusion. It may well be that Syria will get Hizbollah to kick up a storm of activity along the northern border by launching a massive missile and rocket attack across the border into the populations of northern Israel. Syria will do this knowing that Israel will cross the border into Lebanon and hit Syrian targets from the air. But this time Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Iran will be waiting for it, and six other Islamic nations will be poised to supply logistical support. The Islamic nations can cry out while they head south: “We were attacked first – we are justified in this response to the Israeli invasion of our sovereign territory.” This will cause a hesitation by the western world at first and, by the time it wakes up, Jerusalem will have fallen, and Israel will be fleeing into the Negev.

I Thessalonians 5:3,4 – For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upo

n them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape. [4] But ye, brethren, are not in darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief.

Zechariah 13:8 – And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the Lord, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

Revelation 12:6 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

First comes a time when Israel actually believes it can maintain “peace and safety.” Then a time of false “peace and safety” sets in for a brief period.

Then a border incident! Then a response! Then a Jihad, and the last 1260 days of the tribulation period will be under way.

Hold terror states responsible

In fighting that Reuters is calling “the worst in Lebanon since the 1975-1990 civil war,” 79 people have been killed: 34 Lebanese soldiers, 27 jihadists and 18 civilians. It started 12 days ago, when Islamists attacked Lebanese forces stationed near the Palestinian-populated town of Nahr el-Bared.

The group taking responsibility is Fatah al-Islam, which Lebanese authorities say includes Islamists from Saudi Arabia, Algeria, Tunisia, Syria and Lebanon.

Though the group is widely labeled as “al-Qaida-linked,” Lebanese journalist Michael Young points the finger elsewhere. While “specific militants” might be from al-Qaida, “the top leadership is most likely acting today on behalf of the Syrian security services, which have allowed the group access to Lebanon through Syria’s borders,” he writes.

The decision to launch the attacks on the Lebanese army was “very clearly a Syrian effort to show both Lebanon and the international community that a Chapter VII tribunal [directed at Syria on the assassination of former prime minister Rafik Hariri] would have nefarious consequences,” he goes on. Syria’s foreign minister and its UN ambassador have confirmed this by overtly linking stability in Lebanon to the tribunal.

It would be useful to keep this whole episode in mind as the dilemma of how to contend with rogue regimes, particularly Iran and Syria, rises on the agenda.

Western leaders are surely concerned about Iran’s bid for nuclear weapons, yet are constantly weighing what will happen if Iran is seriously confronted.

Looming in the background is the threat that Iran and Syria will mobilize the entire jihadi axis, including al-Qaida, Hizbullah, Hamas, Fatah al-Islam and groups yet to be named or invented in a rash of attacks on the West. Iran and Syria are certainly working to encourage such fears. The July 12, 2006 Hizbullah attack that started the Second Lebanon War, launched just before a G-8 summit that was considering sanctions on Iran, was most likely such an effort. And so again is the latest fire started by Syria, and probably Iran, in Lebanon.

The lesson that Iran and Syria are trying to convey with such intimidation tactics is the same as what these countries say more or less directly when “engaged” by American or European diplomats: leave us alone and you will enjoy greater stability; confront us and we will fight back with terrorism and mayhem. But is this the lesson that the West should internalize and act upon?

A better lesson might be the one buried in the US 9/11 Commission Report – that massive terror attacks, though they may be carried out by non-state actors, need the “time” and “space” that state sponsorship and sanctuary can provide. The straightforward pattern is that conflicts, like the new episode in Lebanon, “burst out” from proxy forces, but the hands of the state sponsors, Iran and Syria, are close behind.

Global jihadist terrorism, accordingly, can and must be fought by governments against the terrorist groups directly, but must ultimately be understood as a weapon in the hands of states. Though confronting these states may not be sufficient to stop such terrorism, it is certainly futile to fight terrorism while allowing state sponsors to escape responsibility and punishment.

This is exactly why the Hariri tribunal is not only important, but a concept that should be expanded to include not only assassinations, but support for terrorism generally. Iran, for example, is banned both by UN Security Council Resolution 1701 on Lebanon, and by a subsequent Chapter VII resolution imposing sanctions related to its nuclear program, from arming Hizbullah. Yet there is no comprehensive UN investigatory and enforcement mechanism that would hold Iran and Syria responsible for their rampant support for terrorism in Iraq and Lebanon, and against Israel.

The failure to systematically hold states accountable for terrorism is the fundamental weakness of the international response to the Islamofascist threat since 9/11. Until this changes, new conflicts, like the current one in northern Lebanon, will continue to “burst out.”
