The resolve of Iran and Syria to thwart America’s attempt to negotiate peace, between the PA and Israel,

has been reflected openly in the fifth meeting between their two Presidents in Iran.

The Mecca Agreement reached between Fatah and Hamas has, for all practical purposes, killed any hope of a negotiated peace between the PA and Israel.

The only type of false peace that now seems possible in Israel is a long-term hudna (truce).

US Sponsors Israel-Palestinian Peace Talks from Position of Weakness

Where dynamic activity is to be seen – as so often these days – is in Tehran.

Syrian ruler Bashar Assad made a point of starting two days of talks in the Iranian capital “to strengthen bilateral relations” on the day of Rice’s arrival in the region.

Both the Syrian and Iranian governments are heavily involved in thwarting US policy goals on both the Iraqi and the Israel-Palestinian fronts. The Tehran talks are expected to yield more of the same.

Assad’s delegation to Tehran included Syria’s former ambassador to Washington, the current foreign minister Walid Moalam, who is reputed to be the most pro-American member of Assad’s government. This was meant as a Syrian-Iranian taunt to show the US, Israeli and Palestinian officials meeting Monday who is calling the shots in the Middle East.

In Beirut Friday, Hizballah’s Hassan Nasrallah declared bald-facedly that weapons are still flowing into Lebanon from Syria and his forces, in South Lebanon too, were rearming.

This was another taunt, demonstrating the futility of the UN Security Council resolution 1701 which halted the Hizballah-Israeli hostilities of July-Aug 2006, expanded the UN peacekeepers force, banned the flow of arms to Hizballah and was supposed to demilitarize the south under Lebanese army and UNIFIL control.

A bare seven months after the Lebanon War’s end, Nasrallah stood up to expose the loss of American and Israeli deterrent leverage for affecting the situation in South Lebanon

Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wound up the effort to sabotage Rice’s mission. He goaded Washington by informing the outgoing Lebanese ambassador to Tehran Adnan Mansour Friday, Feb. 16, that “Iran and Lebanon are limbs of the same body, but unfortunately the Lebanese part is wounded.” His words were released by the Iranian national news agency IRNA.

DEBKAfile’s Middle East sources note this was the first time a senior Iranian statesman has frankly included Lebanon in the area of influence to which Tehran aspires. Iran’s expansionist ambitions

have already produced thrusting offensives with regard to the Palestinians and Iraq.

Tehran is in the process of carving out a crescent of Iranian domination that aims at sweeping up Iraq after the American withdrawal, just like Lebanon after Israel’s defeat in the 2006 war. After that, the Palestinians will be sucked willy-nilly into

the Iranian orbit.

Our sources do not see the Rice-Olmert-Abbas conference providing any obstacles to Tehran’s driving ambition. In advance of the event, President George W.

Bush phoned Olmert to ask about further Israeli concessions to the Palestinians as incentives to keep them moving along the diplomatic track. He himself had no new ideas. The prime minister replied that Israel stood by the Middle East Quartet’s terms for recognizing any Palestinian government – renunciation of violence, acceptance of previous accords, including peace agreements and recognition of the Jewish state.

However, the Quartet’s Palestinian policy was in fact trashed in Mecca ten days ago, when the Saudi king forged a pact with the Hamas prime minister Ismail Haniyeh on terms that excluded all three of its conditions – a pact Washington was helpless to avert.

With these prospects in view, it is not surprising that many US policy-makers including State Department officials advised Condoleezza Rice to call off her Middle East trip and her date with the Israeli and Palestinian leaders.

U.S. Falsely accused of Dividing the Divided!

As I indicated in the Saturday Evening Blog, only the usual insane surface accusations would be issued by Syria and Iran in the scheduled Saturday meeting between Presidents of the two countries, and I was not disappointed, as two Jerusalem Post articles, which follow, attest.

The Sunni and Shiite Muslim sects have been divided for centuries, and their intense lack of trust for each other is exceeded only by their absolute hatred

of Israel, which is about the only thing that can hold them together long enough to fight a war.

The iron and clay mixture characteristics of these descendants of Ishmael and Keturah are well documented. Their common hatred for Israel will soon be able to hold them together long enough to drive Israel into the Wilderness of Negev, and then form a temporary Islamic iron and clay Caliphate Kingdom stretching from Morocco to India. However, the Caliphate will then be replaced by a Kingdom set up by God over which Messiah will reign.

Daniel 2:41-44 – And whereas thou sawest the feet and toes, part of potters’ clay, and part of iron, the kingdom shall be divided; but there shall be in it of the strength of the iron, forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.

Assad, Ahmadinejad vow to cooperate against US, Israel

Syrian President Bashar Assad and his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Saturday night pledged to cooperate to confront US and Israeli plans in the Middle East.

“We should cooperate and work to make the public aware of the sinister aims of the United States and the Zionists,” Assad said after his meeting with Ahmadinejad, according to the state-run IRNA agency.

“Iran and Syria support the peoples of the region

and the enemies will only reach their goals by creating pessimism and disunity amongst Muslims,” he added.

Assad went on to say that the United States had suffered many failures in Iraq and, therefore, was bringing up “baseless charges”

against Iran and Syria day after day to create fresh challenges in the region.

Ahmadinejad concurred with the Syrian president saying that “we should be careful about the enemies’ efforts to create division and conflict amongst Muslims and make sure they do not reach their sinister goals.”

“Under the current conditions Islamic countries must preserve their vigilance, unity and wisdom to prevent the establishment of new conspiracies,” he added.

Ahmadinejad also voiced his support for the new Palestinian Authority unity government stressing that conflicts among Muslim groups would only serve the interests of the “enemies of Islam.”

Assad was given a red-carpet welcome at the Presidential Palace in the Iranian capital, the Iranian state-run television reported.

The US has accused Iran and Syria of not doing enough to stop militants crossing from these countries into Iraq to join the insurgency. Both have rejected the charges.

It was Assad’s fifth visit to Iran since he

took office in 2000. Iran and Syria have long been close allies.

During the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, Syria was the only Arab country to support Iran.

During the past 10 years, Iranian companies have invested more than $700 million in Syria, in sectors such as power generation, automobiles, cement and agriculture.

Syrian President Bashar Assad on Saturday night accused the U.S. of attempting to achieve its goals by creating divisions among Muslim states.

Assad made the remark after a meeting with the Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Teheran.

Ahmadinejad said that the Muslim world must remain unified.

President Bashar Assad of Syria, who has been trying to shake official trial exposure for the assassination of prominent Lebanese officials, and President Ahmadinejad of Iran, who has been under the gun in his own home country by his religious superiors for super extremist statements, are meeting today in Iran. The Mecca Conference hosted by the Saudis, where the Hamas and Fatah signed a Palestinian Authority government merger agreement, is a clear indication that the so-called moderate side of the Islamic society is getting into the Middle East fray, to resist Shiite efforts to take over leadership from the Sunnis in the Muslim world.

It is essential to both Iran and Syria to maintain a growing spirit of Jihad across the Middle East, and to keep Sunni Saudi Arabia out

of the circle of control in the Islamic world.

It would be nice to be a fly on the wall of their meeting place in Tehran to listen to the subjects discussed, such as the congressional non-binding resolution sinking our U.S. troop resolve in Iraq, Hizbullah’s attempted overthrow of the Lebanese government, continued supply of weaponry and financial support to their many terrorist sponsored organizations, the best way to attain worldwide Jihad fanaticism dominance in Islamic hearts, the increase of American naval strength in waters around the Middle East, and the most effective way to eliminate Israel in a future Jihad.

I assure you that the statement issued concerning the results of this get together of the two Presidents will, as usual, be full of baloney rhetoric of strengthening ties and great respect for one another, as they work together for the cause of Islam to defeat Israel and the United States.

Syrian President due in Tehran Today

TEHRAN — Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is to arrive in Tehran today for talks with President Mahmud Ahmadinejad over mutual ties and regional issues including Palestine, Lebanon, and Iraq.

He will “arrive in Tehran late Saturday for a two-day visit and holding talks focused on expansion of mutual ties and issues of bilateral interests,” Ehs an J

ahandideh, a presidential aide, was quoted as saying on Thursday.

The two presidents would also discuss “regional issues and especially those of the Islamic world,” he said, adding that Assad will also meet with other high-ranking officials.

It would be the second visit to Tehran by Assad since Ahmadinejad took over as president.

Ahmadinejad visited Damascus last winter.

Syrian government has expressed support for Iran’s nuclear program.

Damascus has also opposed to the West’s pressure on Tehran for its peaceful nuclear activities

The International Implications of the Hamas-Fatah Mecca Agreement

The Mecca agreement between Hamas and Fatah does not presage a favorable diplomatic turn.

It is merely a tactical political measure calculated to create a false impression regarding Hamas’ political flexibility in order to whitewash the organization into being accepted as a legitimate player in the international arena without it having to meet the three preconditions of the Quartet.

In practice, Gaza under Hamas rule continues to be a hotbed of terror organizations, including those with ties to al-Qaeda.

The political flexibility of Hamas, as expressed in the Mecca agreement, derives first and foremost from Hamas’ inability to score a decisive triumph, as well as from the international political and economic pressure which eroded public support for the Hamas government and the carrot and stick policy of Saudi Arabia (Hamas’ financial patron). Hamas’ main objective is the removal of the international boycott on the Palestinian Authority.

Despite the desire of the EU countries to see a stable and democratic Palestinian government, past experience demonstrates that the billions of dollars poured into the Palestinian Authority since the Oslo process commenced have only served to strengthen the radical forces. If assistance is now extended to a Palestinian government where Hamas predominates, the West would be sawing off the limb of the tree which constitutes its Middle Eastern perch.

Hamas, as part of the Muslim Brotherhood movement, does not conceal its aspirations to foment Islamic revolution throughout the Middle East, which would topple the moderate regimes allied with the West and establish an Islamic caliphate which will threaten Europe.

I believe the moderate regimes allied with the West will be toppled and an Islamic Caliphate will be established, which will stretch across North Africa, the entire Middle East, to the borders of India, and as far east as Indonesia. It will be the last great Empire of the Age of the Gentiles.

The fourth beast in Daniel 7 was the ancient Roman Empire. The great Islamic Caliphate is now arising out of the southern half

Is Hamas planning for a Third Intifada followed by a Hudna (Truce) and then a Jihad?

The Mecca Conference left Hamas unchanged in its determination to eliminate Israel from the earth, as it held on to the three positions that make it impossible to negotiate for even a false peace with Israel, and Fatah signed on to a joint PA government with an impossible partner for meaningful negotiations with anyone.

This leads me to wonder if the goal of the new government will be a drive to obtain a Hudna (long term truce) with Israel, which could induce a period of false peace while they became strong enough to destroy Israel.

I have been mentioning for some time, the very real possibility of a long term hudna as being the brief false period of peace that most believe will precede a vicious attack against Israel, followed by some three and one half years of great tribulation. Events of the last three years make me believe it is the most likely scenario to fulfill the following prophecies.

I Thessalonians 5:3,4 – For when they shall say, Peace and safety; then sudden destruction cometh upon them, as travail upon a woman with child; and they shall not escape.

Revelation 12:6 – And the woman fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.

Hudna (هدنة) is an Arabic term meaning “truce” or “armistice” as well as “calm” or “quiet”, coming from a verbal root meaning “calm”. It is sometimes translated as “cease-fire”. In the Lisan al-Arab (Ibn al-Manzur’s definitive dictionary of classical Arabic, dating to the 14th century) it is defined as follows:

“hadana: he grew quiet. hadina: he quieted (transitive or intransitive). haadana: he made peace with.

The noun from each of these is hudna.”

A particularly famous early hudna was the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah between Muhammad and the Quraysh tribe.

According to Umdat as-Salik, a medieval summary of Shafi’i jurisprudence, hudnas with a non-Muslim enemy should be limited to 10 years: “if Muslims are weak,

a truce may be made for ten years if necessary, for the Prophet made a truce with the Quraysh for that long, as is related by Abu Dawud” (‘Umdat as-Salik, o9.16).

Hudna in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict

In English, the term is most frequently used in reference to a cease-fire agreement in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, particularly one that would involve organizations such as Hamas. The concept of hudna was introduced to the conflict by the Israeli businessman Eyal Erlich in 2001, after seeing a hudna being declared in order to calm a feud in Jordan (cf. Haaretz, January 2, 2002); he and some others proposed, unsuccessfully, that Israel should suggest a mutual hudna as a prelude to a more lasting peace.

Despite the Israeli government’s rejection of the idea, in summer 2003 — following pressure from Abu Mazen and Egypt — Hamas and Islamic Jihad unilaterally declared a 45-day ceasefire, or hudna. Its proponents commonly argued that such a cease-fire would allow hostility to die down and make a full reconciliation possible; its opponents commonly argued that it would be a mere tactical maneuver enabling Palestinian groups to re-group and muster their strength in preparation for further attacks on Israelis, or Israel to continue

expanding settlements, blockading Palestinian towns, and arresting members of such groups[1]. The hudna started in late June 2003.

Israel — which had not made any agreement — continued to hunt down militant opponents, while Islamic Jihad and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade continued a series of attacks on Israeli citizens throughout the month of July. Hamas, claiming to have no involvement in the attacks, officially observed the hudna until, on August 8, an IDF operation to arrest Hamas bombmakers resulted in an gunfight in which an Israeli soldier and two Hamas militants were killed.

Hamas responded with a suicide bombing on August 12, killing one Israeli civilian.

Fatah claimed responsibility for a second suicide bombing on August 12 killing another Israeli citizen. Despite this de facto violation of the hudna, Hamas stated that the cease-fire would continue. Hostilities then escalated: the Israeli army killed Islamic Jihad’s Muhammad Seeder on August 14; the Jerusalem bus 2 massacre by Hamas and Islamic Jihad on August 19, killed 23 and wounded 136 people ; and Israeli forces killed Hamas’s Isma’il Abu-Shanab on August 21. After the killing of the two high-ranking leaders, Hamas eventually called off the hudna[2].

In January 2004, senior Hamas leader Abdel Aziz al-Rantissi offered a 10-year hudna in return for complete withdrawal from all territories captured in the Six Day War, and the establishment of a Palestinian state in the West Bank and Gaza. Rantissi said the hudna was limited to ten years and represented a decision by the movement because it was “difficult to liberate all our land at this stage; the hudna would however not signal a recognition of the state of Israel.” Hamas’ former spiritual leader Sheikh Ahmed Yassin made similar statements at this time, including a one hundred year Hudna. Israel characterised the offer as ridiculous and a “smoke screen for military preparations”. Muslims clash with police after Salah speech in east J’lem

Dozens of masked Muslim youths and children clashed with security forces and reporters in east Jerusalem’s Wadi Joz on Friday afternoon, throwing rocks, blocking streets and burning garbage bins.

Police dispersed the rioters with stun grenades, tear gas and water hoses.

At least one of the rioters was wounded and three were arrested, Israel Radio reported.

The protesters had been listen ing to a sermon delivered by Islamic Movement head Sheikh Raed Salah at a massive protest rally

in the neighborhood, which is north of the Old City.

During the sermon, Salah urged supporters to start a third intifada in order to “save al-Aksa Mosque, free Jerusalem and end the occupation.”

He went on to say that Israel’s history was tainted with blood. “They w ant to build their temple
