Shabak, or Shin Bet, the Israeli counter-intelligence and internal security service, is believed to have three operational departments and five support departments.
Arab Affairs Department is responsibile for antiterrorist operations, political subversion, and maintenance of an index on Arab terrorists. Shabak detachments worked with Aman undercover detachments [known as Mist’aravim] to counter the uprising. This Department has also been active in countering the military wing of Hamas.
• Non-Arab Affairs Department, formerly divided into communist and noncommunist sections, concerned itself with all other countries, including penetrating foreign intelligence services and diplomatic missions in Israel and interrogating immigrants from the Former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe.
• Protective Security Department is responsibile for protecting Israeli government buildings and embassies, defense industries, scientific installations, industrial plants, and the El Al national airline.
Shabak monitors the activities of and personalities in domestic right-wing fringe groups and subversive leftist movements. It is believed to h ave infiltr
ated agents into the ranks of the parties of the far left and had uncovered a number of foreign technicians spying for neighboring Arab countries or the Soviet Union. All foreigners, regardless of religion or nationality, are liable to come under surveillance through an extensive network of informants who regularly came into contact with visitors to Israel.
Shabak’s network of agents and informers in the occupied territories destroyed the PLO’s effectiveness there after 1967, forcing the PLO to withdraw to bases in Jordan.
It is interesting that Shin Bet’s estimate as to the time of ultimate stocks of smuggled weapons (2009 to 2011) falls in the midst of my estimate as to when the next, and last, major war will begin in the Middle East. In the Jerusalem Post article, which follows this lead-in narrative, the head of Shin Bet estimates it will take three to five years at the current rate of weapons smuggling into Israel to stock the internal terror groups to the point of launching a replay of what we have just seen in Lebanon. In the DEBKAfile Report, he warns that the internal terrorist groups inside Israel are building an army and military complex similar to that of Hizbollah.
My guesstimate, as to the most likely time frame for the next war to start in the Middle East between Israel and its internal
and external enemies, is between 2008 and 2012. Once it actually begins, whether it is during or after this time frame, I believe some three and one-half years from that date the final battle of Armageddon will begin. There are several factors involved in when the next war actually begins, (1) United States troops will be out of Iraq, (2) Syria, Iran, and their numerous satellite terrorist groups clustered in and around Israel, must be restocked with abundant military weapons and training to carry out a successful Jihad, and (3) Israel must be confident she can win any war launched against her, as she has always been able to do. In other words, Israel must have a mindset she can maintain “peace and safety” by her own military might and expertise. Israel’s overconfidence in her own might, rather than the might of her God, will be her undoing.

Diskin: Weapons smuggling into Gaza has Skyrocketed

Shin Bet head Yuval Diskin reiterated on Tuesday at a meeting of the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Palestinian terrorist organizations were studying the Lebanese-Israeli war to learn how to play on Israel’s weaker points.
Diskin said the West Bank has become increasingly violent, especially in the area of Samaria.
Following last summer’s withdrawal from the four communities in northern Samaria, the intelligence community has found it difficult to control the area and gather information.
“Samaria has become the land of Islamic Jihad following the disengagement,” he said.
Weapons smuggling through the Rafah crossing has gone up exponentially since the pullout, Diskin warned, adding that “Rafah will soon be the garden of Eden of weapons smuggling.”
He estimated that approximately 15,000 guns, 4 million bullets, 2,300 pistols, 38 rockets, dozens of anti-tank missiles, 15 tons of TNT, 400 RPGs, and 10-15 Katyushas like those used in Lebanon had been smuggled into Gaza from Egypt so far – and, he said, those are just the ones we know about.
After three to five years of this kind of weapons transfer, he warned, Israel will face a situation similar to south Lebanon.
“At this point, anybody who wants to smuggle something through the Philadelphi route can apparently do so,” Diskin said. “You can smuggle anything through Philadelphi except maybe a tank or plane.”

Yuval Diskin reported to the Knesset foreign affairs and defense committee Tuesday, Aug.
29, that Iranian terror experts together with Katyusha and Grad rockets are being smuggled through through the Egyptian-Gaza Strip border past European inspectors
and Egyptian police units.
The Shin Bet director said Hamas is reorganizing as a regular army modeled on Hizballah with a proper chain of command and building fortified bunkers and tunnels in the Gaza Strip.
Diskin also told the lawmakers that he offered the army trained Shin Bet interrogators to question Lebanese prisoners on the two Israeli hostages in Hizballah’s hands. But he was rebuffed with a “No, thank you.”
