As the polls were closing Wednesday night (Jerusalem time), some 60 percent of the Palestinian population had voted in their general election.
Ismail Haniya publicly declared that Hamas would refuse to disarm if it won the very tight race with the Fatah, and that it would not change its charter calling for the destruction of Israel.
Even if Fatah does get a majority, the Hamas will still have a strong minority in the 132 member parliament. As, the polls were closing, it appeared Fatah would receive a majority.
Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert convened a meeting today to get a status report on the security fence, amid increased concern that terrorism will increase regardless of
the outcome of the Palestinian elections.
The current political situation really leaves Israel with only one choice – Finish the security barrier/fence/wall as soon
as possible. The barrier is the only way Israel can separate themselves from the terrorist groups to secure even a relative degree of “peace and safety.”
As I have been reporting for five years, no matter which party runs the Knesset, the fence will be completed.
The following article from the Jerusalem Post indicates Israel’s acute awareness that any meaningful negotiations, regardless of whether Fatah or Hamas wins the election, are a pipe dream.

Olmert Gets Security Fence Report
By Herb Keinon, THE JERUSALEM POST

Acting Prime Minister Ehud Olmert convened a meeting today to get a status report on the security fence, amid increased concern that terrorism will increase regardless of the outcome of the Palestinian elections.
However, officials in the Prime Minister’s Office said the meetings had nothing to do with the elections and the likelihood of a strong Hamas showing, but rather were the continuation of monthly meetings on the fence’s progress.
Olmert was first meeting with Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, Justice and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni, Internal Security Minister Gideon Ezra and Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz.
They will then be joined by top security officials, including Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) head Yuval Diskin and Israel Police Insp.-Gen. Moshe Karadi.
