Good news for the Arab World

The current talks in Cairo between the Palestinian factions could not have been possible without the intervention of Syria, according to Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu Al Gaith. Syria has encouraged the Hamas movement, which rules the Gaza Strip, and other factions to take part in the Egypt-sponsored talks, aimed at ending inter-Palestinian power struggle and forming a unity government.
The Syrian attitude reflects a dramatic change in the power politics
in the Arab world. Damascus has always thrown its weight behind Hamas while other Arab states, notably Egypt and Saudi Arabia, supported the movement’s rival Fatah, led by President Mahmoud Abbas. The Palestinian in-fighting has allowed Israel to exploit the political vacuum and lead a bloody campaign against Gaza and expand its colonies in the West Bank, including the occupied city of Jerusalem. The main Palestinian organization, the PLO, has also become irrelevant due to the inter-faction quarrels.
The situation seems to be changing. And one reason behind this is certainly the newly launched efforts of Saudi Arabia and Syria to end inter-Arab disputes and speed up reconciliation in the run-up to next month’s Arab summit in Qatar.
Syria had been somewhat isolated, following the assassination of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri in 2005. Then came the Lebanon war in 2006 which pitted Syria against other Arab heavy weights. The Bush administration’s policy of ‘containing’ Syria – over its alleged role in supporting the anti-US forces in Iraq – didn’t help either.
Today, President Barack Obama’s US is talking to Syria. It is a different picture and Syria
is being brought back from the cold. There are reports Syrian President Bashar Al Assad is planning an official visit to Saudi Arabia in the next few weeks, which would be the first since Hariri’s assassination. This is good news for the Arab world, which looked fractured, paralysed and ineffective during the Israeli war on Gaza last month.
And it is already showing in Cairo where the Palestinians are talking again.

RAMALLAH, February 28, 2009 (WAFA – PLO news agency)- President Mahmoud
Abbas said, Saturday, that ” we are determinedly heading toward national
reconciliation and are looking to forming a national unity government.”
In a joint press conference with the European Union’s foreign policy
coordinator Javier Solana, President Abbas said that for this national
government to work properly, it should abide by certain obligations that
include the two-state solution, and other singed international obligations.
Presidnet Abbas demanded the Israeli government to commit to its obligations
in respect of the two-state solution, stopping colonial operations, check
point removal, and applying the Road Map regarding going back to boarders of
October 29, 2000.
Abbas also expressed hope to find a quick international support to the
reconstruction of Gaza, emphasizing
the necessity of a specific mechanism
for the support that goes through the Palestinian National Authority and
international organizations.
Solana, on the other hand, said that they (EU) will work along with the
Israeli government on the previous obligations, as they already signed it
with the current Israeli government, and hope to continue with the new one.
Solana pointed out that this visit is part of the preparation for Sharm
El-Sheikh conference that will start on Monday.
