Families of Syrian Brass “Fleeing” Ahead of Feared U.S. Strike

(Times of Israel)

August 27, 2013

“The families of some of the heads of the [Syrian] regime” were flying out of Latakia Airport ahead of an anticipated U.S. strike against regime targets, Israel Channel 2 TV reported Monday.

Israel TV reported on Saturday that chemical shells were fired last Wednesday by the 155th Brigade of the 4th Armored Division of the Syrian Army, commanded by President Assad’s brother Maher.

Israeli military sources reiterated Monday that it was “highly unlikely” that Syria would directly strike at Israel in response to outside military intervention, since this would prompt an Israeli response that would “break the tie” between Assad and the rebel forces seeking to oust him.

Israel is concerned, however, that Syria might try to retaliate via terror groups in south Lebanon or internationally.

Syrian Information Minister Omran al-Zoubi told the Hezbollah ‘s al-Manar network that “Syria has been under pressure since 2003,” while the American invasion of Iraq was underway.

He added that the top officers from around the globe who met in Amman “are party to the aggression against Syira, through sanctions and allowing gunmen enter Syria, and on the question of armament.”

The Syrian minister said that “these countries felt that all they have done until now was unsuccessful so they decided to attack Syria.”

According to him, Syria will respond to any Western military attack. “If we’ll be attacked we’ll have no choice but to defend ourselves, and this is not a situation who hope for as it would just exact a cost from everyone.

“This war has no legitimacy, since the chemical weapons excuse is faulty and since there’s a UN inspection team, which has started to do its job – ascertain whether or not there was use of chemical weapons, and if so, who used them.”

The minister added that “the West has no proof the Syria has used chemical weapons. If the US has such proof they should present it.”

Ya’alon pledges IDF’s ‘might’ against Syria

Defense minister says ‘shaken’ by chemical weapons use in Syria, assures IDF will respond to Syrian hostility. Chief of staff: We’ll defend our citizenry

Against the background of an impending Western strike in Syria, and facing concerns of Syrian retaliation against Israel, Israeli top brass issued forceful warnings to the Assad regime on Tuesday.

“Those who dare to test us will encounter the IDF ‘s might,” Defense Minister Moshe Ya’alon said. “Facing the storm, the IDF’s spirit is no less strong.”

Ya’alon’s statements echoed similar remarks made by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday. The minister also addressed the recent chemical attack in Damascus’ suburbs, allegedly performed by Assad forces.

“I’m certain that every human being was shaken by the images of children lying dead or convulsing in pain after Assad’s forces used, and not for the first time, chemical weapons,” he said.

Speaking at a Givati Regiment memorial service, Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Benny Gantz said that “those who wish to harm us will find that we’re sharper and more determined than ever. Our enemies must realize that we’re ready and willing to defend our citizens with whatever means necessary, facing any threat and every scenario.”

“We’ll not encourage bellicose sentiments in our midst,” he added, “but our defensive duty will be realized by the IDF.”

Earlier, the two and Prime Minister Netanyahu participated in a special meeting held in the Defense Ministry in Tel Aviv to discuss the Syrian crisis and Israeli readiness ahead of a Western strike.

After the meeting, Netanyahu said: “The State of Israel is ready for every scenario. We’re not part of the Syrian civil war, but if we’ll spot an attempt to harm us we’ll respond with great force.”

According to Israeli forecasts, the US will alert Israel before an operation. In the meantime, the IDF raised the alertness level in northern Israel.
