was killed in one of the two consecutive explosions that hit two IRGC bases 46 kilometers west of Tehran Saturday, Nov. 12. The official fatality figure is 32. Fourteen hours after explosions blasts could still be heard and fires raged. DEBKAfile’s exclusive sources report the bases are located in Malard, a town in the Shahryar district.

The Moadarres facility was the first to be hit, while the second and bigger blast occurred at Amir-al-Mo’menin.

Their force was such that the Iranian Red Crescent rushed 45 ambulances to the two facilities plus 23 buses converted to first-aid vehicles and a helicopter to evacuate the critically injured.

However, only six rescue workers were given access to the Moadarres base and none were permitted to enter to enter Amir-al-Mo’menin because of the facility’s sensitivity.

Fourteen hours after the explosions, the blasts continued and fires raged. Surrounding streets were closed and reporters kept away from the scene.

Our sources report increasing evidence that the first explosion was caused by a failed effort to mount a nuclear warhead on a Shahab-3 intermediate-range missile.

It was powerful enough to shatter windows and damage shops in Tehran. People gathering on street corners wondered if Israel had attacked Iran’s nuclear sites or destroyed Revolutionary Guards missile bases. They recalled Supreme Ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s threat Thursday, Nov. 10 to take the war to the streets of Tel Aviv if Tehran was attacked.

IRGC spokesman, Brig. Ramedan Sharif, sharply denied what he said was speculation that the military base was linked to Iran’s nuclear program. “This blast is not related to any nuclear tests,” he said in response to widespread rumors. He insisted the explosion had occurred at an ammo store which was part of the Guards’ “self-sufficiency” system, a term they apply to their munitions plants and the factories manufacturing missile components.

The Iranian authorities, after raising the fatality figure to 32, withheld information on the injured, most of which where transferred to IRGC rather than civilian hospitals. Some may have been foreign engineers or scientists whose presence Tehran is anxious to conceal.
The Emergency Council which deals with extraordinary happenings liable to affect the regime’s stability met in emergency session Saturday night.

Earlier Saturday, DEBKAfile reported on the two huge explosions at two separate military bases west of Tehran killing dozens of Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), wounding many more and trapping an unknown number under rubble.

In Tehran, 40 kilometers away, windows were shattered and damage caused vehicles and shops.

The blasts were heard in Tehran’s center.

DEBKAfile’s military and Iranian sources report that the explosions may have been part of a series carried out by Iranian dissident groups last month.

The suspicion of sabotage

The ammo base blown up Saturday in the town of Malard in Shahryar district contained large quantities

of rubber bullets, tear gas and other ordnance. A short time later, the second explosion hit a light arms depot at a military camp of Bidganeh several kilometers away. That both were accidents is hardly credible.

The two blasts were confirmed by the Iranian lawmaker Hossein Garussi without further details.

Tehran recently broke up an armed dissident group called Oghab. Three members were executed and the others were allowed to flee the country. An organization of that name operates in the United States, but its leader denied involvement in any sabotage operations inside Iran.

‘Revolutionary Guards commander killed in Iran blast’

Iran say explosion was an accident that occurred as soldiers moved munitions at a suspected long-range missile base; commander in charge of self-sufficiency unit is killed, Fars reports.

A senior Iranian Revolutionary Guards commander in charge of the force’s self-sufficiency unit was killed in a blast at a military base near Tehran Saturday, semi-official Fars news agency reported. A mysterious and massive explosion rocked the military arms depot near Tehran, killing 17 Revolutionary Guards Corps officers and wounding 17 others.

Work accident or sabotage?

Iranian officials said the blast was caused by an accident as soldiers moved munitions at the base in Bidganeh, near Shahriar, 45 km. west of the Iranian capital. The base is also believed to be the storage center for some of Iran’s most-advanced long-range ballistic missiles, such as the Shahab 3.

In October 2010, a similar blast took place at a Revolutionary Guards munitions store in Khoramabad, in western Iran, killing and wounding several servicemen.

While there was no indication of any attack on Saturday, the explosion shook homes and rattled windows for kilometers, at a time of mounting tensions with Israel over Iran’s nuclear program.

“So far, 27 personnel of Revolutionary Guards have been martyred and 16 others wounded, some of them are in critical condition,” Iranian broadcasting quoted Revolutionary Guards spokesman Ramezan Sharif as saying. The causality numbers were subsequently lowered to 17 dead and 15 wounded.

“Today at 1:30 p.m. an explosion happened in one of the Revolutionary Guards’ bases while a consignment of explosive devices was being moved out from the arsenal; besides that some munitions in the arsenal exploded which created a terrifying sound,” Sharif said.

Residents in western suburbs of Tehran told Reuters they had felt the blast, with some assuming it to be a small earthquake.

Fire raged at the base for hours. Surrounding streets were closed and reporters were kept away from the scene.

Some media reported there had been two explosions, and the head of Iran’s Red Crescent organization said there was a risk of further blasts.

Mahmoud Mozafar told the Mehr news agency that only six paramedics had been allowed into the Amir al-Momenin military base and that thick smoke was hampering the rescue operation.

There were no reports linking the blast to any air strike or other attack. Tension has risen in recent weeks between Iran and its enemies Israel and the United States, which have not ruled out striking facilities they believe are working toward making nuclear weapons.

Sharif denied what he said was speculation in the Western media that the military base was linked to Iran’s nuclear program. “This blast is not related to any nuclear tests that some foreign media have reported,” he told Mehr.

Tehran denies Western accusations that were given further credence by a report from the UN nuclear agency last week, that its nuclear program has military ends.

On Sunday, the cabinet in Jerusalem will be briefed about the International Atomic Energy Agency report during its weekly meeting.

The Foreign Ministry has instructed its emissaries to speak with their counterparts in capitals around the world about the need for severe sanctions against Iran.

US blog: Mossad behind Iran blast

Blogger Richard Silverstein claims Israel orchestrated explosion that killed 17 at Iranian missile storage facility, in collaboration with local militant group

Dudi Cohen

US blogger Richard Silverstein said Saturday that Israel was the mastermind behind the blast the killed at least 17 people at an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps base near Tehran.

In his blog, Tikun Olam, Silverstein quotes an Israeli expert as saying that the Mossad was responsible for the explosion, in collaboration with the Iranian militant opposition group Mojahedin-e-Khalq.

“It is widely known within intelligence circles that the Israelis use the MEK for varied acts of espionage and terror ranging from fraudulent Iranian memos alleging work on nuclear trigger devices to assassinations of nuclear scientists and bombings of sensitive military installations,” Silverstein said.

He attributed an incident similar to Saturday’s explosion which occurred at a different IRGC missile base last year to Mossad sabotage.

‘External sabotage unlikely’

Meanwhile, a former IRGC soldier said that the explosion occurred at military storage facility where Shihab missiles are stored.

Hamed Ebrahimi, who served at the base for two months, told the Iranian online daily Rooz that the tough security at the facility makes it highly unlikely that the blast was caused by an act of external interference.

The soldier said that the base is split into two divisions; one stores missiles, while the other serves as an air force training center.

A senior IRGC officer was among the massive blast’s victims. The officer, identified as Hassan Tehrani Moqaddam, held a rank parallel to brigadier general, the Fars news agency said. He reportedly served as a researcher at a Tehran university and headed the “Jihad Self-Reliance” unit, mostly tasked with developing arms and missiles following the embargo imposed on Iran since 1979.

The explosion occurred 40 km (25 miles) outside Tehran, and was felt in the capital.

The IRGC ruled out the possibility that deliberate sabotage was behind the flare-up. On Saturday, it was reported that the blast occurred while munitions were being moved.

“The primary cause for the explosion is being determined, and will be made public at a later date,” IRGC spokesman Ramezan Sharif said, stressing that the 17 people who died in the incident and the 16 who were injured were all IRGC operatives, and not civilians.

The funeral procession for the victims has been scheduled for Monday.

Senior Iranian’s son murdered by same method as Hamas’ Mabhouh

DEBKAfile Special Report

November 13, 2011, 9:58 PM (GMT+02:00)

Shortly after two big explosions rocked Iranian Revolutionary Guards bases near Tehran Saturday, Nov. 12, Ahmed Rezaie, 31, was found dead in Dubai’s Gloria Hotel. He was the the son of a high-ranking Iranian official, Mohsen Rezaie, secretary of the powerful Expediency Council and former IRGC commander. The cause of his death strongly resembled the method by which Hamas’ contact man with Tehran Mahmoud al-Mabhouh was slain on Jan. 19, 2010 in another Dubai hotel. The local authorities laid that death at the door of Israel’s Mossad. For instance, Rezaie’s body showed no signs of violence. He appeared have been injected with the Suxamethonium muscle relaxant and then smothered with a pillow.
DEBKAfile’s intelligence sources report that Ahmed Rezaie was physically fit.

He did not take drugs or medication. The Iranian news agency reported that he died in suspicious circumstances at a Dubai hotel withough comment. An Expediency Council spokesman said the case was scrutiny and more information would be released soon.

Our Iranian sources add that Ahmad Rezaie left for the United States in 1998 when his father was at the highest point of his career. There, he gave interviews to American and Western media, including the Voice of Israel’s Farsee station, in which he openly criticized Iran’s rulers especially Supreme Ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

At one point he contacted Israelis with an offer to help run down what happened to the Israeli navigator Ron Arad, who has been missing since 1986 when his plane went down over Lebanon and he was captured by Shiite groups and believed handed over to Tehran. Rezaie offered to travel to Dubai and use his contacts in the Expediency Council to discover what happened to the Israeli navigator in return for a handsome down-payment. His Israeli contacts eventually turn him down.

Over the years, the Supreme Ruler leaned hard on Ahmad’s father to bring his son home, promising he would not be harmed. In 2005, the young Rezaie returned to Tehran. He lived quietly, but was kept under surveillance as a suspected American spy. During that time, he married four times, once to a South Korean woman. Because of his frequent trips overseas on business, the authorities in Tehran began to use him as an informal pipeline for passing information to the West.
He then took up residence in Dubai, with frequent side trips to the Iranian capital.

DEBKAfile’s intelligence sources take into account the possiblity that he was murdered on the direct orders of Ayatollah Khamenei – partly as a warning to his father to cool his close ties with former president-turned opposition figure Hashem Rafsanjani.

Rafsanjani took up the cudgels against the regime at the time of the 2009 anti-regime riots which were sparked by Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s rigged reelection as president.

The untimely death would also have aimied to caution Rafsanjani himself to continue to keep his head down although inthe last two years, Khamenei has managed to strip of honors, high office and political clout.

It would not be the first time that a political enemy of the Supreme Ruler dies in suspicious circumstances, but in most other cases, the deaths occurred in Iran and faked to look like accidents.
