WAY OF THE WORLD
Failure Seen in Putin’s Latest Move
By CHRYSTIA FREELAND/REUTER
Published: September 29, 2011
We have known since 1996 that Russia wasn’t a democracy. We now know that Russia isn’t a dictatorship controlled by one party, one priesthood, or one dynasty. It is a regime ruled by one man.
“The party doesn’t exist,” said one of Russia’s leading independent economists.
“The politics is all about one person.”
That new reality might seem to be a victory for Mr. Putin. But it is a flawed triumph. His resumption of absolute power is also an admission that he and his cronies have failed in the project they set themselves in 2008. And that failure leaves the future President Putin with an Achilles’ heel.
The project was to create a self-replicating institutional base for the regime Mr. Putin brought to power in 2000, when he took over from Boris N. Yeltsin and dismantled the fledgling democratic structures the first leader of independent Russia had either created or tolerated.
“In 2008, Putin’s message was, ‘We aren’t like a Central Asian republic, we aren’t going to build a personalistic regime, we will have institutions,”’ Ivan Krastev, chairman of the Center for Liberal Strategies in Sofia and one of the most astute students of Russian power, told me. “This is all abolished now. The very idea of a governing party and party career, as you have in China, that didn’t work.”
Russia’s transformation into what political scientists call a sultanistic or neo-patrimonial regime is a break both with Russian history and with the global trend. The Kremlin has been home to plenty of murderous dictators. But the czars drew their legitimacy from their blood and their faith.
The general secretaries owed their power to their party and their ideology. Mr. Putin’s rule is based solely on the man himself.
Russia’s shift to sultanism is out of step with the rest of the world, too. The Arab Spring was a revolt against some of the world’s most powerful neo-sultans; it is no accident that most of the remaining Middle Eastern dictatorships are ruled by dynastic monarchs, not strongmen. And among the world’s great powers — a group to which Russia is desperate to belong — only the Kremlin’s ruler need say l’état, c’est moi. China is certainly authoritarian, but it is a one-party state of precisely the sort Mr. Putin has failed to build.
One characteristic of paternalistic regimes is that they rule through fear and humiliation — remember the refrains from the streets of Tunisia and Egypt about people protesting to regain their dignity. That is being lost in Russia. One analyst, who has always spoken to me freely before, asked not to be quoted.
When I asked a Russian businessman who was traveling in Europe what his friends back home thought, he was shocked by my naïveté: Kremlin politics, he explained, was no longer an issue it was safe to discuss on Russian telephones.

ARCHIVE PROPHECY UPDATE NUMBER 35
September 28, 2001
Ezekiel 38:19 to 39:8 – For in my jealousy and in the fire of my wrath have I spoken, Surely in that day there shall be a great shaking in the land of Israel;
Verse 19 gives a general statement of what will happen in Israel. It will be the greatest shaking the Israelites have ever experienced. The Arabah Fault will split open from Lebanon to the Gulf of Arabah – the Mount of Olives will tear apart into two sections and a great valley will be formed through it – the western part of Jerusalem will be lifted up along a line from Geba to Rimmon – and many other prophesied phenomena will also occur. This geological upheaval is dealt with more fully in our web pages by clicking on “Birth Pangs,” and examining our Birth Pang Updates and associated Figures.
Ezekiel 38:20 – So that the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the heaven, and the beasts of the field, and all creeping things that creep upon the earth, and all the men that are upon the face of the earth, shall shake at my presence, and the mountains shall be thrown down, and the steep places shall fall, and every wall shall fall to the ground.
Verse 20 lets us know that the great shaking will not be limited just to Israel with its local Arabah Fault line – it will occur on a worldwide basis along all the thousands of interconnecting fault lines, both on land and on the sea floor (See Figure 3 under Birth Pang Updates). Read verse 20 very carefully and see if it does not very clearly picture a worldwide shaking of all things.
Ezekiel 38:21 – And I will call for a sword against him throughout all my mountains, saith the Lord God: every man’s sword shall be against his brother.
Verse 21 describes the effect that the great worldwide upheaval will have on mankind – in a word, total mass confusion as to foe or friend, amidst fantastic casualty rates, among many different nationalities involved on the battlefield throughout God’s mountains.
Ezekiel 38:22 – And I will plead against him with pestilence and with blood; and I will rain upon him, and upon his bands, and upon the many people that are with him, an overflowing rain, and great hailstones, fire, and brimstone.
Verse 22 paints a picture of the destruction that God will reign down upon Gog and his mighty army.
It describes the fantastic array of pyroclastic associated materials, which will shower down on the antichrist’s army out of the volcanic activity unleashed, when the Jordan Valley tears open for about 185 miles (See Birth Pang Numbers 15 and 16)
Ezekiel 38:23 – Thus will I magnify myself, and sanctify myself; and I will be known in the eyes of many nations, and they shall know that I am
the Lord.
Verse 23 confirms that God has a purpose in all this geological upheaval and destruction – it should leave no doubt as to who is God and who is antichrist.
ARCHIVE PROPHECY UPDATE NUMBER 36
October 5, 2001
In Prophecy Update Number 35 we continued our exposition of Ezekiel 37:1 that began some four months ago in June, finishing with the last verse in chapter 38. This exposition will continue in chapter 39.
Ezekiel 39:1 – Therefore, thou son of man, prophesy against Gog, and say, Thus saith the Lord God; Behold, I am against thee, O Gog, the chief prince of Meshech and Tubal:
In Prophecy Updates 27 through 29 the 600 B.C. location where Meshech and Tubal’s descendants were settled was thoroughly covered, and a case
was made to prove that Gog is most likely to come out of Syria. The location of Magog’s descendants was also outlined in these Prophecy Updates. Once again, we are advised that Gog is the enemy of God.
Ezekiel 39:2 – And I will turn thee back, and leave but the sixth part of thee, and will cause thee to come up from the north parts, and will bring thee upon the mountains of Israel:
In the time frame this book was written, the expression “the north parts,” was taken to mean what we identify today as Syria and Lebanon. It is important to understand that God will do this without the help of man. He says: I will turn, I will cause, and I will bring. What he is about to unleash is the greatest geological upheaval Israel has known up to that time. It will destroy most of Gog’s mighty horde (See Birth Pangs 15 and 16 with their associated diagrams).
Ezekiel 39:3 – And I will smite thy bow out of thy left hand, and will cause thine arrows to fall out of thy right hand.
This verse paints a picture of men abandoning their weapons in horrifying fear. The earthquakes and volcanic holocaust will so frighten the men of war that all thought of combat will be erased from their minds.
They will drop their weapons as they flee for their lives.
Ezekiel 39:4 – Thou shalt fall upon the mountains of Israel, thou, and all thy bands, and the people that is with thee: I will give thee unto the ravenous birds of every sort, and to the beasts of the field to be devoured.
There won’t be any flesh left to pick on those soldiers of God caught in the Jordan Valley from the Gulf of Aqabah to the entrance of the Jezreel Valley (See Birth Pangs 15 and 16 with their associated diagrams). But there will be gobs of flesh on the bones found in interior hills of Judea, Samaria, and Galilee.
Ezekiel 39:5 – Thou shalt fall upon the open field: for I have spoken it, saith the Lord God.
Verse 5 reaffirms the principle of “I will” in verses 2 and 3. It confirms there is no way all this can be changed. Why? “For I have spoken it, saith the Lord God. We have short-changed the power of God ever since man began to develop weapons of massive destruction. I assure you that, by the end of the terror of the Tribulation Period, we will have seen how puny what we have developed is in comparison to God’s mighty arsenal.
Ezekiel 39:6-8 – And I will send a fire on Magog, and among them that dwell carelessly in the isles: and they shall know that I am the Lord. [7] So will I make my holy name known in the midst of my people Israel; and I will not let them pollute my holy name any more: and the heathen shall know that I am the Lord, the Holy One in Israel. [8] Behold, it is come, and it is done, saith the Lord God; this is the day whereof I have spoken.
Verse 6 – The Lord affirms he will send volcanic fire on the land of Magog (Russia), across the Mediterranean and the nations of Islam.

Putin for Czar?
BY ERIC S MARGOLIS (Russia)
2 December 2007
RUSSIANS relish President Vladimir Putin’s earthy phrases. Reacting to sharp Western criticism of Russia’s parliamentary elections today, Putin, playing ‘Vlad the Bad’, warned Western powers not to “poke their snotty noses” in his nation’s business.
Putin, who has been increasingly outspoken of late, mocked President George W Bush’s double standard in accusing Russia of dubious elections, squashing opposition, and roughing up dissenters while ignoring similar behaviour by US ally Georgia. He could have also added other key US allies like Pakistan, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Afghanistan and Uzbekistan.
President Putin is right to tell off Western critics and limit foreign observation of Russian elections.
Russia is a great, historic power, not some banana republic. If Western observers are really needed to supervise votes in Moscow, Omsk and Kaluga, then why shouldn’t Russian observers supervise America’s sometimes dodgy elections
? For example, in Chicago, where the dead routinely vote; in Florida, where blacks are turned away; or Ohio where rigged voting machines gave Republicans victory in 2004 elections.
Why, in fact, keep up the pretence that Russia conducts free and fair elections. Opposition parties have almost no funding, media is government controlled, parties winning less than 7 per cent of the vote are excluded, and there is no independent electoral commission. Today’s vote is really a referendum on President Putin’s popularity. Most polls show him with 70-80 per cent approval, making Putin one of the world’s most successful and admired leaders.
Former Intelligence officer Putin and his KGB old boys network have worked wonders for Russia. After a coup that ousted the sick, besotted Yeltsin, Putin inherited a bankrupt, demoralised nation subsisting on cash handouts from Washington. So low did ‘Weimar’ Russia sink, much of its advanced military technology was sold to the US for large cash payoffs.
Thanks to tough management, nationalisations, and rising oil prices caused in large part by George Bush’s foolhardy invasion of Iraq, Russia’s national income more than tripled under Putin. Equally important, Putin restored pride and a sense of dignity to this fiercely chauvinistic nation.
In the process, he centralised all power in the Kremlin, muzzled the independent press, intimidated opponents, jailed oligarchs, and created a cult of personality.
He ruthlessly crushed the life out of independence-seeking Chechnya, thrilling Muslim-hating Russians by vowing to “kill the Chechen bandits in their s…houses”.
Most Russians couldn’t care less about the feeble little liberal parties clamouring for Western-style democracy. It’s a sad truism that Russians want order, economic progress and national pride, not democracy. Judo champion, abstemious Putin fits this bill perfectly as the historic ‘white czar’, a good, fatherly autocrat who is strong, manly, and pure.
To most Russians, ‘democracy’ is associated with the thieving oligarchs who pillaged Russia’s industries and resources during Yeltsin’s rule, and the ivory-tower economists who debauched Russia’s currency, leaving millions of pensioners to starve. Democracy is also seen by many Russians as a Trojan Horse the US used to assert financial and political influence over Russia, and later in Ukraine, Georgia and Central Asia.
Putin says he wants to continue leading Russia. But he is constitutionally banned from a third presidential term. So does Putin plan to run Russia as an all-powerful prime minister, or as leader of his United Russia Party
? Will he become a youthful elder statesman? Or will he change the constitution?
He may follow the example of Czar Ivan the Terrible, temporarily withdrawing from public life until throngs of supplicants beg him to return to Moscow as Czar.
Or he could just remain Citizen Vladimir Putin. The only formal title the great Deng Xiaoping held when he so brilliantly ruled China was Chairman of the Chinese Bridge Association.
Whatever Putin’s near-term political plans, he clearly intends to restore Russia’s role as a world power, and to challenge US global domination. Russia’s withdrawal this week from the European conventional arms treaty is the latest ominous sign.
President Putin wants to restore the old Soviet Union’s borders, but minus the Communist Party, which has sunk to a miserable 7 per cent public support. Putin believes Russia’s vast energy and mineral resources will eventually make it the world’s leading power. Only 55 years old, Putin might even live to see this triumphant day.
