The Eternal Optimist – Vice Premier Shimon Peres

I am a died-in-the-wool conservative pessimist, which is the reason my carnal flesh cannot understand how there can ever be even a false peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. Quite frankly, the only reason I believe it will occur is because the Scripture, which I
believe to be the inspired, infallible Word of God, indicates it will.
T here was a time I had little use for t
he ultra-liberal former head of the Labor Party, but I have grown to love him because
of his sincerity in what he believes, even though we are at opposite ends of political poles.
Oddly enough, I do believe he is right when he says the Palestinians and Israelis are closer than ever to a peace deal, but I know it will be a false one, and of temporary duration.

Peres: Israel and Palestinians Closer than ever to Peace Deal

Vice Premier Shimon Peres said Saturday that Israel and the Palestinians were closer to peace than they’ve been in the past 50 years.
“The distance between us is the shortest it’s been for the last 50 years,” Peres said at one-day security summit in the Central Asian n
ation of Kazakhstan. “The distance is very short, but the speed is very slow.”
Peres said rather than focusing on political stumbling blocks to peace, they should turn their attention to economic issues, which might be easier to solve and could lead to political solutions.
“Perhaps instead of solving the political border issue, why not try to construct the relationship on the basis of economic relations,” he said. “Maybe we can come to an economic peace before we come to a political
peace. Then maybe political peace will come later.”
On Friday, Peres said that Israel will soon hold talks with Palestinians.
