Finally, France Gets a Little Backbone!

The grow ing union, between Iran and Syria, has led to an
increased movement of military equipment and finances to the Hizbullah terrorist army in southern Lebanon from Iran via Syria.
It cost Bashar Assad politically when he was forced to pull out of Lebanon, and his refusal to personally answer questions of investigators into the death of former Lebanese Prime Minister Hariri has further weakened his government. As I have previously stated, I do not expect Assad to be the President of Syria in 2008.
French President’s Chirac’s statements, which follow in a Jerusalem Post article by the Associated Press, are a breath of fresh air from France, and a very real indication that the European Union is realizing more and more what a serious threat the rise of the spirit of Islam Jihad in the Middle East constitutes toward the national interests of France.
The recent burnings of vehicles and property across Europe, followed by the riots over Muhammad cartoons, have been a wake-up call to the European Union that Islamic fanaticism is not voluntarily going to fade away. Europe tried over and over again to negotiate, then renegotiate, with Hitler, giving more and more concessions, hoping the spirit of his fanaticism would fade away.
Now, the world is once again negotiating, then renegotiating, over and over again with the spirit of Jihad in Iran, hoping it will fade away and, as in the story of Mother Goose, dreaming it will conclude with “they all loved happily ever after!”
Syria is well aware that its geographical pos
itioning, along with that of Lebanon, to the Mediterranean Sea make it a much easier target for a direct military action by the international community.

Chirac to Syria: Stay out of Lebanon
Associated Press, THE JERUSALEM POST
March 4, 2006
Any Syrian attempt to destabilize Lebanon through assassinations or weapons shipments will trigger a response by the international community, French President Jacques Chirac warned Saturday.
In an interview with the pan-Arab Al Hayat newspaper, Chirac also reminded Damascus that it should fully cooperate
with an international probe into the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.
“Syria must understand that any act that encroaches upon the stability of Lebanon, be it through the shipment of weapons or assassinations, is an act that contradicts with its standing in the international community and will trigger a response from the international community,” he said.
Chirac made the comments ahead of a three-day visit, beginning Saturday, to Saudi Arabia, which has also pressured Syria
to cooperate in the Hariri probe.
Chirac, a close friend of Hariri, said in the interview that the former prime minister’s assassination will not go unpunished.
“The truth and justice are necessary for the sake of a new Lebanon,” he said.
“Those who are behind the assassinations (in Lebanon) must realize that those who are defending Lebanon’s independence are not alone.
The international community is with them and it is determined to succeed,” Chirac said.
