Chile sends army against looters, deaths hit 708

CONCEPCION, Chile – Chile’s president sent the army to help police attack looting on Sunday and appealed for international help in the wake of an earthquake that shattered cities and killed at least 708 people.
President Michelle Bachelet announced the sharply higher new death toll after a six-hour meeting with aides and emergency officials struggling to cope with one of the most powerful earthquakes in centuries.
“We face a catastrophe of such unthinkable magnitude that it will require a giant effort” for Chile to recover, Bachelet told a news conference at the presidential palace, which itself suffered minor cracks in Saturday’s magnitude-8.8 quake.
She said
that a growing number of people were listed as missing and she signed a decree giving the military control over security in the province of Concepcion, where looters have pillaged supermarkets, gas stations, pharmacies and banks.
The president, who leaves office on March 11, also said the country would accept some of the offers of aid that have poured in from around the world.
She said the country needs field hospitals and temporary bridges, water purification plants and damage assessment experts — as well as rescuers to help relieve workers who have been laboring frantically for more than a day.
Officials earlier had said about 300 were known dead, with 500,000 homes severely damaged.
A tsunami caused by the quake that swept across the Pacific killed several people on a Chilean island and devastated other coastal communities near the epicenter, but caused little damage in other countries, after precautionary evacuations of hundreds of thousands of people. The tsunami warning was lifted a day after the earthquake.
Police said more than 100 people died in Concepcion, the largest city near the epicenter with more than 200,000 people. The university was among the buildings that caught fire around the city as gas and power lines snapped. Many streets were littered with rubble from edifices and inmates escaped from a nearby prison.
Police used water cannon and tear gas to scatter people who forced open the doors of the Lider supermarket in Concepcion, hauling away everything from diapers to dehydrated milk to a kitchen stove.
Across the Bio Bio River in San Pedro, others cleared out a shopping mall. A video store was set ablaze, two automatic teller machines were broken open, a bank was robbed and a supermarket emptied, its floor littered with mashed plums, scattered dog food and smashed liquor bottles.
The largest building damaged in Concepcion was a newly opened 15-story apartment that toppled backward, trapping an estimated 60 people inside apartments where the floors suddenly became vertical and the contents of every room slammed down onto rear walls.
“It fell at the moment the earthquake began,” said 4th Lt. Juan Schulmeyer of Concepcion’s 7th Firefighter Company, pointing to where the foundation collapsed. A full 24 hours later, only 16 people had been pulled out alive, and six bodies
had been recovered.
Rescuers heard a woman call out at 11 p.m. Saturday from what seemed like the 6th floor, but hours later they were making slow progress in reaching her. Rescuers were working with two power saws and an electric hammer on a generator, but their supply of gas was running out and it was taking them a frustrating hour and a half to cut each hole through the concrete.
“It’s very difficult working in the dark with aftershocks, and inside it’s complicated. The apartments are totally destroyed.
You have to work with great caution,” said Paulo Klein, who was leading a group of rescue specialists from Puerto Montt. They flew in on an air force plane with just the equipment they could carry. Heavy equipment was coming later along with 12 other rescuers.
The quake tore apart houses, bridges and highways, and Chileans near the epicenter were thrown from their beds by the force of the mega-quake, which was felt as far away as Sao Paulo in Brazil — 1,800 miles (2,900 kilometers) to the east.
The full extent of damage remained unclear. Ninety aftershocks of magnitude 5 or greater shuddered across the disaster prone Andean nation within 24 hours of the initial quake. One was nearly as powerful as Haiti’ s deva
stating Jan. 12 earthquake.
In the village of Reumen, a tractor trailer slammed into a dangling pedestrian overpass and 40 tons of concrete and steel crunched the truck, covering Chile’s main highway with smashed grapes, tomatoes and cucumbers — one of several overpasses toppled along the highway.
Truck driver Jaime Musso, 53, thought his truck was being buffeted by strong winds and by the time he saw the overpass hanging down over Highway 5 there was no chance of stopping, so he aimed for the spot where he thought he would cause the least damage and brought down the overpass onto his truck. He said he survived “by millimeters.”
As night fell Saturday, about a dozen men and children sat around a bonfire in the remains of their homes in Curico, a town 122 miles (196 kilometers) south of the capital, Santiago.
“We were sleeping when we felt the quake, very strongly.
I got up and went out the door. When I looked back my bed was covered in rubble,” said survivor Claudio Palma.
In the capital Santiago, 200 miles (325 kilometers) to the northeast of the epicenter, the national Fine Arts Museum was badly damaged and an apartment building’s two-story parking lot pancaked, smashing about 50 cars.
Santiago’s damaged airport managed to receive five flights on Sunday, though no outbound flights were possible. The subway also partially reopened.
Chile’s main seaport, in Valparaiso, was closed while damage was assessed. Two oil refineries shut down. The state-run Codelco, the world’s largest copper producer, halted work at two of its mines, but said it expected them to resume operations quickly.
The jolt set off a tsunami that swamped San Juan Bautista village on Robinson Crusoe Island off Chile, killing at least five people and leaving 11 missing, said Guillermo de la Masa, head of the government emergency bureau for the Valparaiso region.
On the mainland, several huge waves inundated part of the major port city of Talcahuano, near hard-hit Concepcion. A large boat was swept more than a block inland.
State television showed scenes of devastation in coastal towns, where houses were blasted away by water, leaving scraps of wood and metal — and complaints of homeless quake victims that officials had not yet brought water or food.
The surge of water raced across the Pacific, setting off alarm sirens in Hawaii, Polynesia and Tonga, but the tsunami waves proved small
and did little damage as they reached as far as Japan.
Robert Williams, a geophysicist at the U.S. Geological Survey, said the Chilean quake was hundreds of times more powerful than Haiti’s magnitude-7 quake, though it was deeper and cost far fewer lives.
The largest earthquake ever recorded struck the same area of Chile on May 22, 1960. The magnitude-9.5 quake killed 1,655 people and made 2 million homeless. Saturday’s quake matched a 1906 temblor off the Ecuadorean coast as the seventh-strongest ever recorded in the world.

Will Tribulation Period Earthquakes Begin Soon?
Two very significant events occurred while I worked at the Federal Office building Office in downtown Kansas City, one in 1963 and one in 1964. I had just issued a severe weather warning box for something or other on November 22, 1963, and was back in the teletype room watching the high speed reports to see if active weather was starting to generate in the box.
But the machine I was reading suddenly stopped, which was unusual, and then someone at the transmitting station manually, and very slowly, typed in the hunt and peck system of non-professional typists, a chilling all caps message – “THE PRESIDENT HAS BEEN SHOT.” In 1964, on March 28, in roughly the same manner, I was advised of the great tsunami producing earthquake in Alaska, and the effects of a tsunami flowing out from it in all directions from Prince Edward Sound. It was the first time I was ever actually cognizant of the effects an earthquake and its accompanying tsunami can produce on ocean coastal areas, and it was also the first time my interest in such phenomena was genuinely aroused. In fact, when I put together my first book, “Tectonic Chaos,” published by Diamond W. Graphics in Little Rock, Arkansas, I chose an engraving of the great tsunami of 1755, which swept in from the Atlantic on Portugal’s coastal port of Lisbon, as the book cover for it. In less than a day, the ancient city of Lisbon was completely destroyed by quakes, fire, and finally a wall of water, higher than a two-story building, that swept a half mile inland.
The first set of worldwide earthquake data I obtained, as I recollect, was published by the National Technical Information Service, U.S. Department of Commerce, Springfield, Virginia. I believe it was one of the first KGRD – 5 Reports but, whatever the case, one could see the growing number of reported earthquakes up to 1967. I began to have more interest in theology and geology than I did in meteorology, and many Scriptures in the Bible came to life for me spiritually in all the physical things God created. So, after I graduated from the Missionary Baptist Seminary and Arkansas Tech University, the many pieces of the puzzle actually came together, and I started to understand how the following Scriptures, and many others, fit together in the manner they will be fulfilled by God.
Daniel 12:4 – But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased.
Revelation 6:14 – And the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together; and every mountain and island were moved out of their places.
Revelation 16:20 – And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
Luke 21:25,26 – And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; [26] Men’s hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken.
Isaiah 29:6 – Thou shalt be visited of the Lord of hosts with thunder, and with earthquake, and great noise, with storm and tempest, and the flame of devouring fire.
I realized that what I had been taught from the Bible as a young man growing up under Missionary Baptist preachers in northern Arkansas was more likely to be correct than what many post atomic bomb preachers were teaching, which was that prophesied worldwide catastrophes would be fulfilled by man’s many weapons of mass destruction. I was taught that God would use the earth to fulfill his own prophecies by his own power through the release of natural disasters. You are now viewing the results of one in southeastern Asia. The estimated death toll of this tsunami has been revised so many times to a higher figure I shiver to think what the final toll of it and its disease aftermath may total. As I took post-graduate courses at ATU, and continued to learn the Physical Sciences of the earth on, below, and above it, it became apparent to me that a worldwide shifting of the tectonic plates would produce the exact phenomena described by the Old and New Testament prophets and writers. I visualize one or two tsunamis like the one in Southeast Asia occurring each month for the final 42 months of the tribulation period. I am convinced this earth will go into a shortened tectonic mountain building period, shortly before 2008, such as man has never experienced in his history.
Revelation 16:18-20 – And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. [19] And the great city was divided into three parts, and the cities of the nations fell: and great Babylon came in remembrance before God, to give unto her the cup of the wine of the fierceness of his wrath. [20] And every island fled away, and the mountains were not found.
All the earthquakes in the book of Revelation are placed between the opening of the sixth seal in 6:12 and the pouring out of the seventh vial of wrath in 16:18. It is in this time period that the greatest geological upheaval and transformation of the tectonic plates, since God placed Adam on this earth, will occur. Revelation 6:12 – And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; (See Archives – Birth Pang 3)
This earthquake will trigger a chain reaction that spreads erratically on the tectonic plate borders of the earth to produce countless numbers of earthquakes for some three and one-half years across the surface of the entire planet. All mountains and islands are firmly impregnated into these massive plates, and ride along as passengers on their surface. By the end of the three and one-half years, every mountain peak, and the center of every island, will have a new set of latitudinal and longitudinal coordinates in microseconds. I know this to be true because Revelation 6:14 states that “every mountain and island were moved out of their places.” Furthermore, I believe the fantastic breakup along the shifting place borders will produce thousands of volcanic eruptions, which will fulfill the phenomenon “and the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together.” I believe the use of a Jewish scroll as a simile to show the gradual disappearance of the sun, moon, stars, and blue sky, is the perfect illustration of the effect volcanic smoke has on the appearance of the heavens as it builds up in the stratosphere. When the great volcano Krakatoa erupted in 1883 more than half of the island was destroyed and blown away in the explosion. The cloud over the volcano reached 17 miles into the air, and the volcanic dust from the eruption was carried completely around the world by the winds of the stratosphere – taking months to drift down to the earth’s surface. The microscopic volcanic particles in the earth’s atmosphere produced beautiful sunrises and sunsets throughout a large part of the world long after the eruption.
I am convinced that the shifting of the plates will generate the formation of long chains of volcanic eruptions, pictured in figure 10, along all the boundaries of figure 3. God, who made everything I have described to the point, has also created, around the entire earth, a great temperature inversion shroud in the lower section of the stratosphere, just above the tropopause. So any time there is a moderate to severe vertical volcanic eruption, smoke is forcefully injected through the tropopause, and then trapped beneath the temperature inversion of the stratosphere. There is virtually no moisture found above the tropopause, so the volcanic smoke particles take a long time to become heavy enough to fall earthward by condensation of water vapor on them, and smoke remains suspended in the lower section of the stratosphere for five to fifteen years. The winds, in the lower section of the stratosphere, do spread the volcanic smoke around the entire envelope of atmosphere that surrounds the earth over a two to four year period. Figure 11 portrays the great temperature inversion that exists through the stratosphere around the entire earth. As the smoke attempts to rise through this inversion it soon reaches a temperature near its own, and then begins to flatten out into a great shield of smoke, a shield that is then carried by upper level winds to produce an earth encompassing cloud in the lower stratosphere. Have you ever really looked at all the Old and New Testament prophecies that describe the appearance of the heavenly bodies during the last three and one-half years of the Tribulation Period? Let us now consider just a few of them, to see if we can correlate them with the increasing severity of their visual effect on the view of human eyes from start to finish.

Joel 2:30,31 – And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke.
[31] The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the Lord come.
Revelation 8:12 – And the fourth angel sounded, and the third part of the sun was smitten, and the third part of the moon, and the third part of the stars; so as the third part of them was darkened, and the day shone not for a third part of it, and the night likewise.
Joel 2:10 – The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining:
Matthew 24:29 – Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken:
How can this be? One prophet says you will not be able to see the sun, moon, and stars about one-third of the time, but another says you won’t be able to see them at all. These prophecies are fulfilled gradually over the last three and one-half years of the Tribulation Period, and the prophets have been given visions of their effects on the view of the heavenly bodies from the earth, at different times, during this period. Let us assume that the last three and on-half years of the Tribulation Period have begun, and a person is standing at point “X” on figure 12. This person could look up and see the sun, moon, or stars from this vantage point on the earth’s surface without obstruction. Now, let’s allow figure 12 to come alive, with the winds of the stratosphere moving the volcanic smoke clouds around the earth in patches. Within a few hours after you first made your unobstructed observation of the sun, moon, or stars, the thin leading edge of the volcanic cloud would begin to move between you and the heavenly bodies. If it were night, the moon would turn blood red. If it were day, the sun would be darkened. Within an hour or two the thicker part of the volcanic smoke shield would move over you, and the sun, moon, or stars would completely disappear from view. After a few more hours the back side of the cloud would move past, and you would once again be enjoying a clear space between volcanic cloud patches, such that the sun, moon, or stars would again be visible. This scenario would be repeated over and over again during the last three and one-half years of the Tribulation Period, but on a gradually worsening trend. You would not be able to see the sun, moon, or stars about one-third of the time – at times the moon would be blood red and the sun black as sackcloth of hair – and sometimes you could not see any of the heavenly bodies. All of this is exactly what the Old and New Testament prophets observed in their visions. These are a part of the “signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars” prophesied by Luke.

At this point it may seem I have been sidetracked from explaining “and the heaven departed as a scroll when it is rolled together,” however, everything up to this point has been for that specific purpose. In Revelation 6:14, the word used for heaven is “ouranos,” and there are three of them: (1) The heaven where God dwells, (2) The heaven that makes up our atmosphere, and (3) The heaven were the sun, moon, stars, and o
ther heavenly bodies dwell, that is, the universe. It is the universe heaven to which John refers. The word translated “departed” is “apechoristhe,” which, in this case, simply means “was removed from view.” John is saying he saw what the Hebrews considered heaven (sun, moon, and stars) removed from his view. When a man departs, or is removed, he is no longer visible to the one from which he departed. He may “depart” quickly or slowly. He may remain in view for a long time before he does finally “depart” from view. John says that the heaven disappeared from his view, and then tells us the very slow manner in which it disappeared – “as a scroll when it is rolled together.” The reader of the scroll reads, then rolls, reads, then rolls, reads, then rolls, and continues this process until the writing departs from his view after the final page is read. On the last turning the two rollers come together, at which time the writing completely disappears from his view.
In figure 13 you can see the likeness of a Hebrew scroll. If, while you were reading the scroll, it was slowly rolled together, then it could be truly stated that the writing departed from your view, “as a scroll when it is rolled together.” In his vision John looked up into what the Hebrews considered the heavens and, as he watched, all the heavenly bodies slowly disappeared over a period of time. This is exactly what will occur during the period of time we identify as the last three and one-half years of the Tribulation Period. It will occur like the slow rolling together of a scroll, such that by the end of the Tribulation Period a continuous cloud band of smoke will completely engulf the earth in the lower section of the stratosphere. No one will be able to see the sun, moon, or stars through the thick shroud for about five months before the Battle of Armageddon. It is through the great stratospheric cloud, shown in figure 14, that the author believes the Lord shall return at the end of the Tribulation Period.

I had believed, ever since 1967, that at some point in time before 2008 Israel would be attacked from Syria and, when the attack occurred the great earthquake of Revelation 6:12 would rumble through the Jordan River Valley, and Israel would be driven into the Negev wilderness.
In the late seventies I thought the attack could occur as early as the late eighties or early nineties, but by the late eighties I realized things were moving much slower than I had anticipated in the seventies, and I knew it would occur after 2000. However, I still believed it would occur before 2008. In 2007 I took all the world events associated with prophecy fulfillment and increases in earthquakes & volcanic activity, and made what I am convinced will be my final guesstimate as to when activity associated with a final war and seismic activity will begin – I believe it will begin at some point in time between 2010 and 2015. Only God knows exactly when it will begin, but he does indicate He will let us see when it is ‘near’!

Thousands feared dead in Indonesian quake

PADANG — Rescue workers raced against time Thursday to assist victims of a huge earthquake on Indonesia’s Sumatra island where upwards of 1,000 people are feared dead and many more trapped in rubble.
The first flights laden with food, medicine and body bags began arriving in the devastated region on Sumatra island as another powerful quake struck further south, causing more injuries and sparking panic.
Wednesday afternoon’s 7.6-magnitude quake toppled buildings and led to fires in Padang city, home to nearly a million people on the coast of Sumatra, which was left largely without power and communications.
The official death toll hit 529 with 105 seriously injured, but those numbers are expected to soar as the full scale of the tragedy unfolds. Many districts remain closed to emergency services.
“Our prediction is that thousands have died,” health ministry crisis center head Rustam Pakaya said.
Rescue teams from the Indonesian army and health ministry descended on the city and surrounding towns to hunt for survivors in the twisted wreckage of collapsed buildings and homes, with work expected to go on into the night.
In pouring rain that hampered rescue work early in the day, overwhelmed police and soldiers clawed through the tangled remains of schools, hotels and the city’s main M. Djamil hospital.
Padang, which lies between the Indian Ocean and the Bukit Barisan mountains, was a chaotic scene of traffic jams and rubble set against the constant din of sirens as ambulances tried to negotiate the gridlock.
At the M. Djamil hospital, a constant stream of injured residents were dropped off at hastily erected tents where doctors worked frantically to treat victims.
Emilzon, a medic who gave only one name, said they were treating hundreds of people for broken bones, head injuries and trauma, many of whom were car crash victims.
“We are running out of doctors and nurses because we are overwhelmed with patients,” he said.
In front of a collapsed school, 49-year-old mother Andriana waited in tears as police picked through the rubble for her 14-year-old daughter and dozens of other children believed trapped inside.

A series of earthquakes in recent years, including one of magnitude 8.2 that struck Bengkulu province in September 2007 and another off Aceh that triggered the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 2004, have released energy along the faultline.
“West Sumatra is like a supermarket for geological disasters. There are active volcanoes, landslides, land quakes caused by faults,” Geological Disaster Mitigation and Volcanology Center head Surono told Agence France Presse by phone.
Dozens of aftershocks followed Wednesday’s quake, including a major one Thursday which the US Geological Survey measured at 6.8 and said struck on land 225 km southeast of Padang.
The Indonesian earthquakes followed a massive 8.0-magnitude tremor that spawned a deadly tsunami in the Samoan islands of the South Pacific.
Both disaster zones sit on the volatile “Ring of Fire,” an arc of seismic instability around the Pacific rim.

The quake struck on Wednesday off Sumatra’s west coast, 47 km northwest of Padang on a major faultline that scientists have long warned was set to release pent up energy.
The Indonesian earthquakes followed a massive 8.0-magnitude tremor that spawned a deadly tsunami in the Samoan islands of the South Pacific.
Meanwhile, Philippine Ambassador to Indonesia Vidal Querol said no Filipinos were reported killed or injured in the huge earthquake that struck Indonesia,
The Filipino community leaders in Indonesia reported zero Filipino casualties, he told a radio interview.
Among the Filipinos staying and working in Indonesia, only those in Aceh are likely to have felt the 7.6 magnitude quake, Querol said.
