Iraqi Prime Minister Ibrahim Jaafari has begun the first top-level visit to Iran
since the two neighbours waged an eight-year war in the 1980s.
More than 10 m inisters are accompany
ing Mr Jaafari to open what Iranian media have called a new chapter in ties.
They are expected to discuss security and the control of their long border.
A new friendship is blossoming between Tehran and Baghdad to the consternation of the US, still bogged down in Iraq, says the BBC’ s France
s Harrison.
After decades of no diplomatic relations, Iraq now has a prime m inister who has spent years
in exile in Iran and heads a Shia-dominated government sympathetic to its neighbour, says our Tehran correspondent.
Iraqi officials have recently apologised for Saddam Hussein’s invasion of Iran.
Co-operation boost
The Iranian press says this is the biggest Iraqi delegation to visit in 40 years.
“Everything is ready for bilateral co-operation with Iraq and we are ready to sign a security agreement during the visit,” said Iran’ s Intelligence Mini
ster Ali Yunesi.

PM: No limit to response if PA doesn’t take action
by Hilary Leila Krieger, THE JERUSALEM POST
Following a week of Palestinian terror attacks and rocket fire, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon said that the violence will have no affect on the evacuation from Gaza and that he had instructed the security forces to “act without limitations” to combat terror.
“Terror attacks will not prevent the execution of disengagement” as scheduled, Sharon said during an interview aired on Channel 2 Saturday night.
“Israel’s response to terrorism will be very strong and heavy.”
A Sharon aide, speaking after the interview, said that serious moves could come in “a matter of days. We’re giving the last opportunity to Abu Mazen [Palestinian Chairman Mahmoud Abbas] to take the steps” needed to end terror, the aide said.
Sharon said that Israel, in the face of Palestinian inaction, would take “all necessary measures” against Islamic Jihad, such as targeted assassinations and the retaking of Tulkarm. The cabinet is to review the situation at its meeting Sunday.
