Assad to host Sarkozy, Turkey, Qatar leaders
September 2, 2008
Associated Press , THE JERUSALEM POST
Syrian President Bashar Assad is looking to rebuild some trust with the West, and this week French President Nicolas Sarkozy, along with other US allies, are testing out whether new warmth with Damascus can bring progress in Mideast peace efforts.
Sarkozy’s visit is a reward to Assad for a recent sign of flexibility – his agreement in August to establish diplomatic ties with Lebanon, a longstanding demand
of the Lebanese and the West.
Sarkozy, the prime minister of Turkey and the emir of Qatar will hold a joint summit with Assad in Damascus on Thursday, hoping to sound out whether the cautious good feelings can be built on, at a time when Syria is engaged in indirect peace negotiations with Israel.

The phrase “peace for our time” was spoken on 30 September 1938 by British prime minister Neville Chamberlain in his speech concerning the Munich Agreement, often misquoted as “peace in our time”. It is primarily remembered for its ironic value.
The Munich Agreement gave the Sudetenland of Czechoslovakia to Hitler in an attempt to satisfy his desire for Lebensraum or “living space” for Germany. The German occupation of the Sudetenland began on the next day, 1 October.
One year after the agreement, following continued aggression from Germany and its invasion of Poland, Europe was plunged into World War II.
I remember this event quite well.
The world breathed a sigh of relief in 1938 as Neville Chamberlain brought back to England the good news from the German Herr Hitler that there would be “peace for our time.” My dad and uncles rejoiced they would not have to fight another World War on foreign soul, and hope of a better future economy after a great recession loomed ahead of America. I got a BB gun for Christmas (not a Red Rider) that year and killed my first bird (after which I felt like a dirty bird when I picked up its lifeless body).
Once again a glimmer of world peace is being sought, but this time it is France’s turn to seek it from an Islamic menace, rather than England from a Nazi menace. Unfortunately, the outcome will be the same and, at some point in time between 2010 and 2015, the world will see Islamic forces attack Israel which, after Israel is driven into the Negev for some three and one-half years, will culminate in the final battle of this Gentile Age, the great battle of Armageddon.
