Hamas confirms Israel truce but says talks not concluded
June 18, 2008
Hamas says it will respect a truce with
Israel for the Gaza Strip set to start on Thursday, but stressed that Egyptian-mediated negotiations had not yet been concluded.
“Hamas will adhere to the timetable which was set by Egypt but it is our right to respond to any Israeli aggression before its implementation,” Hamas spokesman Fawzi Barhum said.
“The discussions in Cairo have not been concluded but they are positive,” he said, adding: “we are close to announcing agreement on a truce.”
Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev would not confirm the two sides had reached an agreement, insisting that the Jewish state required “not just words but actions”.
“Last week the Israeli security cabinet took a decision to support the Egyptian track,” Regev said.
“If indeed there is a cessation of terrorist attacks, if indeed there is an end to the military build-up in Gaza, if indeed there is movement on the issue of Gilad Shalit, this indeed will be a new reality,” he said.
Israel has in the past
insisted on progress on the release of Shalit – an Israeli soldier captured by Palestinian militants in a deadly cross-border raid in 2006 – as a condition for accepting a truce.
It has also said Palestinians must cease smuggling arms across the Egyptian border.
Since the Islamist Hamas movement seized power of the Gaza Strip a year ago, Palestinian fighters have clashed with Israeli troops on a near-daily basis and hundreds of people, mostly Gaza militants, have been killed.
