The article which follows our heading by Dallas Darling is historically outstanding in its brief outline of theological wars and the peace of God.
It is unfortunate that the heartfelt desire of the article’s last paragraph will not begin to be realized until the Second Advent of Christ. This is true because of the inherited nature Adam and Eve passed on to all men when the two rebelled against the peace of God they had received from the Lord in the Garden of Eden.
And even after the Second Advent, and a thousand years of en forced
peace by Jesus in the Jerusalem Temple, mankind will once again rise up in the flesh against God, and once again come against Jerusalem.
Revelation 19:19 to 20:3 – And I saw the beast, and the kings of the earth, and their armies, gathered together to make war against him that sat on the horse, and against his army. [20] And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone. [21] And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.
[1] And I saw an angel come down from heaven, having the key of the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand. [2] And he laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, [3] And cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal upon him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season.
Revelation 20:7-10 – And when the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison, [8] And shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea.
[9] And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. [10] And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
Jesus knew full well that man, in his inherited carnal nature from the Garden of Eden, could never bring in peace and good will toward all men, whether they were believers or unbelievers, and the history offered in the World News article gives direct evidence of it. Conflicts between believers in theological circles, has produced many wars.
Certainly the Lord knew this had to be the case because man is incapable of living at peace with his brother except by force. Cain would never have killed Abel if Adam and Eve had not passed on to him a nature of evil.
What he told the disciples is still valid today, in fact even more so, since what we call religion has reached its maximum corruption.
Matthew 10:34,35 – Think not that I am come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.
[35] For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in law.
There is currently more religious conflict, between a vast multiplicity of different beliefs of never ending variations, than at time in history, and it is only going to get worse. Man cannot save himself from himself, nor is he capable, by any stretch of the imagination, to actually bring in a millennium of peace. Only God can, and most assuredly will, bring in a true millennium of peace on this planet. And, once again, man will be the party that ends it, but the spiritual race of mankind following man’s second rebellion will have a time of peace with God that never ends.

As a young Ordained Minister, I can still recall driving two hours to meet with my Superintendent. The Church had always reassured me of its love and inclusiveness, and that my faith was a “journey” with God. For some time now, I had been struggling with two Fundamental Truths: The Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the evidence of speaking in tongues, and the Rapture in which God would come back and remove his chosen people out of the world before a period of horrendous suffering and tribulation. After walking down a long corridor, the Superintendent invited me to sit down. Since he had ordained me, we had known each other for several years and he was grooming me to become Youth Director of the entire state.
I calmly set forth that someone could be filled with the Holy Spirit without the evidence of speaking in tongues. I also explained it appeared the Greek Text supported the Second Coming of Christ and the Rapture as occurring at the same time and after the Tribulation Period. As I mentioned other Christians had/were suffering and the Rapture seemed like an Escapist Theology for comfortable First World Christians, I noticed my Superintendent’s face turned red. He stood up and in an angry voice pounded on the table and said, “I was born Assembly God, I was raised Assembly God and I will die Assembly God!” He then told me to “Get out!”, and that my ordination would be revoked.
I remembered this incident when Senator Barack Obama announced his resignation “with some sadness” from the Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago. Although he had been a member for 20 years, it is clear that Sen. Obama, the Democratic presidential nominee, had been hurt by his longtime pastor and friend the Rev.
Jeremiah Wright. The 24 hour virtual mass media repeatedly showed Rev.
Wright claiming the U.S. Government had mistreated Blacks and for saying, “We bombed Hiroshima, we bombed Nagasaki, and we nuked far more than the thousands in New York and the Pentagon, and we never batted an eye.
We have supported state terrorism against the Palestinians and black South Africans, and now we are indignant because the stuff we have done overseas is now brought right back to our own front yards. America’s chickens are coming home to roost.” More recently in the same church, the Rev. Michael Pfleger mocked Senator Hillary Clinton by claiming she was crying over “a black man stealing my show.”
Senator John McCain, the Republican presidential nominee, has also experienced woes with religious leaders.
Pastor Rod Parsley of the World Harvest Church of Columbus, whom Sen. McCain called “one of the truly great leaders in America, a moral compass, a spiritual guide,” described Islam as an “anti-Christ religion that intends through violence to conquer the world.” He also said Mohammed was “the mouthpiece of a conspiracy of spiritual evil.” Sen. McCain sought Pastor John Hagee’s endorsement only to find out that Pastor Hagee claimed God sent Adolf Hitler as a hunter to help Jews reach the promised land. He also believes America is fighting World War III against 200 million “Islamic Fascists” and views it as a war between a “culture of death” (Islam) and a “culture of life” (Christianity). Pastor Hagee has preached that the “serpent’s head” of radical Islam is Iran and has called for a religious war claiming, “They hate us because it is their religious duty to hate us…Radical Islam is a doctrine of death…it is their highest honor to kill you, the infidels…this is why they cannot be accommodated.”
After the death of Charlemagne, who was crowned emperor by Pope Leo III, and during the early Middle Ages, a brutal civil war erupted over who would rule the Carolingian territories throughout France, Germany and Italy.
Foreign invaders attacked and plundered cities, churches and monasteries. In response, most of Europe adopted feudalism and the manorial system where the nobility and landowners became dependent on the military and professional soldiers for protection.
The feudal system, based on wealth, property, resources and militarism, along with a large peasant class, however, did not diminish the constant warfare and political turmoil. Europe still experienced the robbing and killing of peasants, merchants and clergy, and suffered territorial conflicts between lords and state churches whom fought in the name of God.
To prevent feudal lords and their knights from fighting and committing acts of violence, the Catholic church orchestrated the Peace of God and Truce of God. The Peace of God denounced war, aggression and killing and called for protection of the poor and noncombatants, such as peasant farmers, women, children, and priests. The Peace of God also proclaimed safety and immunity within churches
and abbeys from nobles and kings whom often raped women, beat the defenseless to death and beheaded social and political rebels. The Truce of God set aside certain days of the year when violence was not allowed between Christians. It also established certain codes for treating prisoners of wars and even banned the use of certain weapons, notably the crossbow.
The kings, nobles, knights, warlords, and clergy with their church members of the Middle Ages are today’s presidents, prime ministers, soldiers, heads of states, and religious leaders with their vast electronic empires. Having witnessed and been aware of physical, emotional, verbal, and sexual abuses in the church; and having listened to some ministers preach a gospel of retaliation and vengeance; and having realized that neglect can also be a form of abuse, especially when disregarding pre-emptive wars, nuclear weapons, economic injustices, poverty, and starvation (unlike Rev. Wright); I have concluded that whether it is the Assemblies of God and other Protestant denominations or the Catholic church, Western Christianity is often fashioned in the image of Western Capitalism which includes greed, exclusion, excessive materialism, and extreme secularism.
In the end, there is no place for war and violence to co-exist with Theology-the study of God the Creator. War and its destructive tendencies of hate, jealousy, divisiveness, and doctrines of despotism are the exact opposite of the mercy and grace of God. Can Western Christianity regain the Peace of God and Truce of God and if so, will it extend beyond the sanctuary? At this moment in history, will Western church leaders, instead of preaching war and violence, declare a real Holy War and start speaking and acting against fear, dehumanization, terror, and all forms of violence and types of weapons? If this was to happen, who knows, the Peace of God just may embrace “jihad” (an inner struggle to submit to God’s will as the Prophet Muhammed did before the Hegira when he struggled nonviolently against the enemies of faith), and “jihad” just may embrace the Peace of God.
