ate Rice has become just another politician with an agenda to make a name for herself as the individual who was finally able to bring peace to the Middle East. She has gone all out to get some Islamic signatures on a worthless piece of paper in order to escape the stain of being a failure in the Washington political arena.
If every Fatah public official signed a peace agreement in blood certified to be their own, and swore publicly to carry it out, they could not, and would not, be able to perform it. Fatah cannot control Hamas, Islamic Jihad, and al-Aksa Martyr’s Brigades, and Secretary of State Rice is well aware of it, but she is attempting to pull all her chestnuts out of the fire with any sort of a peace agreement in the waning era of the Bush Administration, in order to save her future chances of public or private employment at high salary levels.
Dr. Rice is one of the most brilliant personages in Washington and, in her defense, I must say that she was handed a “mission impossible” assignment with no “easy button” from the start of her appointment as Secretary of State. The two major “mission impossible” assignments, as I have indicated consistently, were to create a true peace in the Middle East and to create a lasting democratic government in Iraq.
Only God will be able to complete that task at Christ’s Second Advent, and I rather suspect the worldwide government will be more of a theocracy than democracy.

Israeli attack threatens peace summit

THE Israeli attack on a Syrian military base last month has cast a pall on hopes that peace will emerge from a regional summit and has reportedly sparked a rift between White House chiefs over US policy towards Syria.
Six weeks after the air strike, the White House and Pentagon are embroiled in a debate over whether evidence provided by Israel warrants halting recent diplomatic overtures to Syria and North Korea, which is alleged to have helped Damascus start a fledgling nuclear program.
The New York Times reported that debate over the calibre of the Israeli intelligence has split along partisan lines, with hawkish Vice-President Dick Cheney strongly backing Israel’s position.
However, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Defence Secretary Robert Gates appear reluctant to endorse warnings that Syria is on a path towards being a nuclear state.
After four years of hardline rhetoric, based largely on fallout from the war in Iraq, Washington had recently taken tentative steps to re-engage
the regime of President Bashar al-Assad, which it had previously branded as a backer of regional terrorism. The Bush regime has also moved to fully engage North Korea, after the hermit state agreed to gradually dismantle its nuclear program. Despite the reluctance of conservatives who claim the latest evidence proves North Korea cannot be trusted, the US moved ahead last week with a deal to supply North Korea with fuel and food aid as a reward for its nuclear co-operation.
Scant facts have emerged from a media blackout surrounding the September 6 strike. However, several US officials, with access to some of the Israeli information, have claimed North Koreans were among a number of people killed during
the midnight raid in a desert area of northwestern Syria.
Damascus has remained implacable ever since, but Mr Assad recently toned down threats of a military strike against Israel in retaliation.
Mr Assad told the BBC that the Israeli jets had struck an abandoned military base. Syrian officials have denied the site was the centre of a fledgling nuclear program. Officials from Turkey, which has friendly ties with the Jewish state, travelled to Damascus early last week to present Syrian government officials with part of the Israeli dossier supporting the strike.
Signs of division between Dr Rice and President George W.Bush on Middle East policies have been emerging over the past 18 months, and are set to cause tension in the lead-up to the regional peace summit scheduled to be held in Washington late next month.
Informed sources in Israel and the US have said Dr Rice has unsuccessfully urged the President to pressure Israel into removing numerous West Bank settlements and checkpoints and other impediments to Palestinians’ daily life.
Mr Bush hopes the summit will ultimately lead to the implementation of a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians, centring on a two-state solution. Twelve Arab states have reportedly agreed to send delegates.
However, Syria says it will not attend unless the future of the Golan Heights, which it lost to Israel during the Six Day War, is on the conference agenda.
Palestinian negotiators have been working with their Israeli counterparts for a month, after a series of bridge-building meetings between Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
However, the Palestinian side has also threatened to pull out of the talks unless final status issues are tabled.
The Palestinians say the future of Jerusalem and the right of return of refugees are red-line issues. Mr Abbas’s aides have insisted on the drafting of a declaration of principles, warning of a dangerous deterioration if it is not prepared.
“(Without the declaration) the situation won’t be good, and we will have to decide between two alternatives: to go or not to go (to the summit),” said chief Palestinian negotiator Ahmed Qureia.
