Psalm 23:1,2 – A Psalm of David – The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. [2] He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
HE MAKETH ME TO LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES:
After the sheep has fed itself on the lush green grass, it lies down on it in the satisfaction of it having quenched its hunger for it. A shepherd who leads a sheep to green grass finds joy in making it lay down to rest by what it has eaten,
John 21:15-19 – So when they had dined, Jesus saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my lambs. [16] He saith to him again the second time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my sheep. [17] He saith unto him the third time, Simon, son of Jonas, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him, Feed my sheep. [18] Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest: but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. [19]This spake he, signifying by what death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow me.
Jeremiah 17:7,8 – Blessed is the man that trusteth in the Lord, and whose hope the Lord is. [8] For he shall be as a tree planted by the waters, and that spreadeth out her roots by the river, and shall not see when heat cometh, but her leaf shall be green; and shall not be careful in the year of drought, neither shall cease from yielding fruit.
LAST WORDS OF THE CHIEF SHEPHERD’S SHEEP DAVID
II Samuel 23:1-4 – Now these be the last words of David. David the son of Jesse said, and the man who was raised up on high, the anointed of the God of Jacob, and the sweet psalmist of Israel, said, [2] The Spirit of the Lord spake by me, and his word was in my tongue. [3] The God of Israel said, the Rock of Israel spake to me, He that ruleth over men must be just, ruling in the fear of God. [4] And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.
HE LEADETH ME BESIDE THE STILL WATERS.
Sheep have very small mouths and it is difficult for them to drink from a rushing stream. They love to drink from a still spring water source that branches off the flowing part of the desert spring into a still eddy pool collected from the main stream.
David, as a sheep of his Chief Shepard, knew he would lead him from fast flowing difficulties into periods of still water pools of communion with God, and the Old Testament teachings of Moses. The sheep of the Chief Shepherd today have prayer, his Word, and reflection on it as the still water pool eddies of satisfaction and rest from the fast water flow of the troubles and trials of life.
Numbers 21:16,17 –And from thence they went to Beer: that is the well whereof the Lord spake unto Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water. [17]Then Israel sang this song, Spring up, O well; sing ye unto it:
Deuteronomy 8:3-7–And he humbled thee and suffered thee to hunger, and fed thee with manna, which thou knewest not, neither did thy fathers know; that he might make thee know that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live. [4] Thy raiment waxed not old upon thee, neither did thy foot swell, these forty years.[5]Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that as a man chasteneth his son so the Lord thy God chasteneth thee. [6] Therefore thou shalt keep the commandments of the Lord thy God, to walk in his ways, and to fear him. [7] For the Lord thy God bringeth thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of valleys and hills;
John 4:14 – But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life
