Seyed Mohammad Khātamī was born September 29, 1943 in the Ardakan Yazd Province.

He is an Iranian Persian scholar and politician.

He served as the fifth President of Iran from August 2, 1997 to August 2, 2005. He also served as Iran’s Minister of Culture in both the 1980s and 1990s.

Khatami attracted global attention during his first election to the presidency when, as “a little known cleric, he captured almost 70% of the vote”– Khatami had run on a platform of liberalization and reform. During his two terms as president, Khatami advocated freedom of expression, tolerance and civil society, constructive diplomatic relations with other states including those in the European Union and Asia, and an economic policy that supported a free market and foreign investment.

Iran’s former reformist president declared Sunday that he will run for president again in the country’s upcoming elections, posing a serious ch

allenge to hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

There had been speculation for months that Mohammed Khatami would seek the presidency in the June 12 vote.

The 65-year-old popular reformist is a powerful counterpoint to Ahmadinejad, whose mixture of Western defiance and fiery nationalism sharply contrasts Khatami’s tempered tones and appeals for global dialogue.

“I seriously announce my candidacy in the next [presidential] election,” he announced Sunday during a meeting with his supporters.

Khatami said it was impossible for someone like himself who was interested in the fate of Iran to remain silent. He said he decided to run because he was “attached to the country’s greatness and the people’s right to have control over their own fate.”

Khatami’s landslide presidential victory in 1997 defeated hard-liners who ruled Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

He is credited with relaxing some of Iran’s rigid restrictions on cultural and social activities, but he left office in 2005 widely discredited among his political base after hard-line clerics stifled the bulk of his reform program.

He had been considered a long shot to return politics after turning his attention to religious and cultural exchanges in recent years. But his candidacy could boost Iran’s dispirited reformists, who have not had a political heir emerge since he left office.

Hard-liners have vowed they will never again allow reformists to take control of the government and have used the Guardi

an Council, an election watchdog that vet candidates and the election, and other institutions they control to block reformists from gaining power. It is unclear if the Council will block Khatami’s candidacy.

The June vote is critical for Ahmadinejad, who was elected in 2005 promising to bring oil revenues to every Iranian family, tackle unemployment and improve living standards, but has increasingly been criticized for his failure to do so.

Under Ahmadinejad, Iran has suffered international isolation, skyrocketing prices and disputes over Iran’s nuclear program, which the West fears masks a nuclear weapons pursuit. Iran denies the charge.

Khatami’s decision to run against Ahmadinejad, 52, could significantly shake up Iran’s politics, appealing to citizens disillusioned by the country’s failing economy and Ahmadinejad’s foreign policy.

So far, the only other candidate who has announced he is running in the June vote is moderate Iranian cleric Mehdi Karrubi, 71,

who is considered a long shot in the race.

Rejected Son Returns as Judgment Rod to Bring Peace to Us!

Psalm 2:7-9 – I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee.

[8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter’s vessel.

Isaiah 11:1,4,15,16 – And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: [4] But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. [15] And the Lord shall utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea; and with his mighty wind shall he shake his hand over the river, and shall smite it in the seven streams, and make men go over dryshod. [16] And there shall be an highway for the remnant of his people, which shall be left, from Assyria; like as it was to Israel in the day that he came up out of the land

of Egypt.

Christ will smite the earth with the rod of his mouth. And one of the particular places he will destroy in so doing is the tongue of the Egyptian Sea. Another area of his smiting will be the great Euphrates River.

In Isaiah’s day the “tongue of the Egyptian Sea” is what we identify as the Gulf of Suez, a northern extension of the Red Sea that slithers like a serpent’s wet tongue between Egypt and the Sinai.

Since Isaiah’s time, man has dug out a northern extension of the “Egyptian Sea” to link the Mediterranean and Red Seas together.

The words “utterly destroy” come from the Hebrew word “charam,” which means “to be cut off” or “to shut up.” We are advised by God, through Isaiah, that he intends to completely shut up sections of the Gulf of Suez and the Suez Canal.

In Archive Prophecy Update Number 179A, the division of the Mount of Olives into two remaining halves was described, with one half being carried to the north on the extreme southern edge of a newly created Gaza Plate, while the other half drifted southward on the on the northern tip of a newly created Sinai Plate (See Archive Birth Pang Figure 33). In Figure 34 you may observe the consequences of the movement of the Sinai Plate as it floats southward on an underground sea of magma. As you can see, when the southward drift occurs, the Sinai Plate will be jammed against the massive African Plate. Dry land will crunch against dry land, and a northernmost part of the tongue of the Egyptian Sea will be completely “shut up.” (See Archive Birth Pang Figures 31 to 34). It may not be completely closed until the final great earthquake in Revelation.

Revelation 16:18-21 – And there were voices, and thunders, and lightnings; and there was a great earthquake, such as was not since men were upon the earth, so mighty an earthquake, and so great. It will be possible to walk across this area on dry land throughout the millennial reign

of Christ. The nation of Israel may replace the Suez Canal as the link between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea.

It is possible that Mediterranean maritime shipping commerce will pass upstream to a point on the opposite side of the Mount of Olives from Jerusalem, and then proceed downstream to reach the Red Sea through the Arabah Desert. Of course, the reverse path would be taken by all maritime shipping passing via

the Red Sea to

the Mediterranean.

This would cause Israel to receive fees from all nations passing through their port on the eastern side of the river (See Archive Birth Pang Figure 47).

“The river,” Of Isaiah 11:15, has been disputed as to its identity by biblical expositors for centuries. At one time I was convinced that this particular river was the Nile of Egypt. I thought the “seven streams” were most certainly the seven streams of the great Nile Delta, and I was very persistent in this interpretation. I was well aware the expression “the river” was “hannahar, and that this was usually applied only to the Euphrates River.

However, because of the “seven streams,” I clung tenaciously to my belief it was the Nile. But, in my desire to make it the Nile, I had carelessly failed to examine

the Hebrew construction of the sentence action. When it said that the river should be smitten “in the seven streams,” the Hebrew does not mean it already existed as seven streams, and that God would smite seven streams already in existence. It states that God will smite a single river, and, when he performs that action, it will become seven streams because of the smiting. I now know that the single river, which will be divided into seven streams, is none other than the great Euphrates. The inspired Hebrew text phrase, in order to understand its meaning, should be read “and shall smite it into seven streams.” This action will occur at the same time, and is a part of, the action whereby God dries up the Euphrates south of the Palmyra folds and faults.

Revelation 16:12 – And the sixth angel poured out his vial upon the great river Euphrates; and the water thereof was dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared.

We were advised in Isaiah 11:16, that this “drying up” of the Euphrates creates a situation such that it will be possible for the millennial return of tribulation Israelites from the area east of the present Euphrates, and that this return would no longer be hampered by having to boat across the Euphrates. The latter portion of this verse also indicates that such a highway will also extend into Egypt. The “Israel” of verse 16 represents the descendents of the man Jacob, hence the personal pronoun “he” is used, even though it refers to an entire nation that came from Jacob’s loins. When the nation of Israel “came up out of the land of Egypt,” God parted the waters of the extreme northern extension of the Red Sea, the extension that was called “the tongue of the Egyptian Sea in Isaiah’s day, but which is identified as the Gulf of Suez today. On the day Israel crossed this “yam cuwph” extension of the Red Sea, while fleeing from the Egyptian Pharaoh, it could be said God had created a highway of dry land from Egypt to Assyria. But God closed that dry land pathway to destroy the Pharaoh’s mighty army with a flood of closing walls of water. However, the dry land passage of Isaiah will be a permanent thing, because of the drying up of the Euphrates and the shutting up of the Suez Canal, thereby making it possible to move all the way from the huge African Continent to the European, Eurasian, or Asian continents, without having to pass over any ocean or sea. A God made, sea free, highway will be created that will last a thousand years. Throughout the millennial reign these continents will remain fused by God’s power. And, throughout the reign of Christ, the nations of these massive continents will move up and down the dry land linkage to worship Christ in the city of Jerusalem, the new capital of the world. The commerce of Africa will flow through Israel to Asia and Eurasia, and the commerce of Asia and Eurasia will flow between themselves and into Africa. Israel will sit at the crossroads of the world’s sea and land commerce. Jerusalem will be the center of the world.

Isaiah 19:23-25 – In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into

Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria, and the Egyptians shall serve with the Assyrians. [24] In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, even a blessing in the midst of the land: [25] Whom the Lord of hosts shall bless, saying, Blessed be Egypt my people, and Assyria the work of my hands, and Israel mine inheritance.

And all the nations of the world will come by land, air, and sea to keep the annual Feast of Tabernacles in Jerusalem.

Zechariah 14:9,16 – And the Lord shall be king over all the earth: in that day shall there be one Lord, and his name one. [16] And it shall come to pass, that every one that is left of all the nations which came against Jerusalem shall even go up from year to year to worship the King, the Lord of hosts, and to keep the feast of tabernacles.

Ezekiel 39:21-22, 27-29 – And I will set my glory among the heathen, and all the heathen shall see my judgment that I have executed, and my hand that I have laid upon them. [22] So the house of Israel shall know that I am the Lord their God from that day and forward. [27] When I have brought them again from the people, and gathered them out of their enemies’ lands, and am sanctified in them in the sight of many nations; [28] Then shall they know that I am the Lord their God, which caused them to be led into captivity among the heathen: but I have gathered them unto their own land, and have left none of them any more there. [29] Neither will I hide my face any more from them: for I have poured out my spirit upon the house of Israel, saith the Lord God.

Earlier this Update, I discussed how God would smite the Euphrates River and, as a result of that smiting, it would be separated into seven streams. Now, I will deal as to where that smiting by God will probably take place (See Archive Birth Pang Figures 29 and 35). God has created a long zone of structural weakness in the crust of the earth from the northern headwaters of the Jordan River northeastward to the mighty Euphrates River. It extends from the Sea of Galilee area across Syria to near El Rashid on the Euphrates River, and consists of an elongated zone of major faults and folds in the in the earth’s crust, known as the Palmyra Belt.

Please note on Archive Birth Pang Figures 35 and 36 how it links the Jordan and Euphrates Rivers together.

The Euphrates is one of the greatest carriers of top water silt on the face of the earth. It tears the topsoil from Turkish mountainsides and then carries it through the Fertile Crescent of Syria and Iraq into the Persian Gulf. The land delta of the Persian Gulf is the fastest growing delta on the earth. This growth is produced by massive influxes of silt carried into the Persian Gulf by the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers.

Isaiah indicates that God will smite the Euphrates, causing it to divide into seven streamlets in the area where he strikes it. The striking will occur in the zone on the Euphrates in the vicinity of El Rashid, Syria, and cause its waters to be redirected southwestward into extreme northern Israel near Dan and the Springs of Banias. When the Arabah Fault is ripped open from the Gult of Aqabah to Lebanon, the resultant fantastic shaking of the earth, will cause the Palmyra Fault Zone to collapse, and the Euphrates River will be diverted southwest across the crumbled zone of rock and earth to link with the northern headwaters of the Jordan River.

Whenever any sediment carrying river moves into a zone with more sediment than it can carry, it invariably produces what geologists call “a braided river.” A braided river is the division of a single river into several streams.

Isaiah counted seven after the Euphrates smiting. The seven streamlets will weave their way through the newly formed cracks in the crust along the northern fringe of the Palmyra Belt, eventually to feed into the northern headwaters of the Jordan River. It will be what geologists refer to as “headwater piracy.” In this case the Jordan River will have acted as the pirate to steal the waters of the Euphrates into its own headwaters. This tremendous increase will not only triple Israel’s current volume of water, but will also give it more topsoil for land crops than it can use during its Messiah’s millennial reign. Israel will be transformed into the breadbasket of the world.

We are advised by John, in Revelation 16:12, as to the effects of this massive water division in

to the upper Jordan. The current riverbed south of El Rashid will go dry. It will then be possible for the kings of the east to pass unhampered across shallow streamlets on the way to Jerusalem to worship King Messiah.

Israel’s recent war in Gaza has unleashed the worst outbreaks of anti-Semitism in decades, the US head of the Anti-Defamation League said on Friday.

“This is the worst, the most intense, the most global that it’s been in most of our memories. And the effort to get the good people to stand up is not easy,” Abraham Foxman told Jewish community leaders in a speech in this south Florida resort city

Foxman said Israel’s military offensive against the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, which began in the Gaza Strip in late December, had been answered with hatred and attacks against Jews “from Austria to Zimbabwe.”

Most governments were doing too little to stem “an epidemic, a pandemic of anti-Semitism,” he said.

Israel’s military invaded Gaza in a three-week offensive launched in late December, which Israeli leaders said was intended to stop Hamas from launching rocket attacks on Israel from the small territory.

Medical officials said the Israeli offensive killed 1,300 Palestinians, including 700 civilians, prompting widespread international complaints that Israel had used excessive force.

The Anti-Defamation League said recent anti-Jewish attacks triggered by the Gaza conflict ranged from the shooting of two Israelis by a man of Palestinian descent in Denmark to attacks on synagogues in Venezuela, Greece, Chicago and elsewhere.

In Turkey, an Israeli basketball team fled from the court after a crowd turned on them, calling them “killers.” In Toulouse, France, last month an attack on one synagogue involved two cars packed with fire bombs.

Foxman said that in protests around the world, the Star of David had been equated with the Nazi swastika and Jewish leaders were threatened.

There had also been calls for boycotts of Jewish businesses in South Africa, Italy, Turkey and France.

“We need to insist that the civilized world stand up and say ‘No’ in every single country in the international arena to condemn this vicious, hideous violence,” said Foxman, whose organization is a global leader in the fight against anti-Jewish crime.

Since the last Lebanese war and the recent “Cast Lead” Israeli Operation in the Gaza Strip, anti-Jewish sentiment has sky rocketed across the surface of the earth.

It will soon be demonstrated in a vicious Islamic attack against Israel, which will finally culminate in a gathering of many Old World nations in a final attempt to end the “Jewish Problem” at Armageddon, some three and one-half years after Israel is initially attacked. I believe the initial attack will be launched at some point in time between 2010 and 2015.

Turkey probes IDF ‘war crimes’ in Gaza

Turkish prosecutors said Friday that they were investigating whether Israeli leaders should be prosecuted for crimes against humanity over the recent IDF offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The Ankara chief prosecutor’s office said the probe was opened after Mazlum-Der, an Islamic-oriented human rights organization in Turkey, filed an official complaint against Israeli leaders.

The group alleges that genocide, torture and crimes against humanity were committed by President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Israeli army and military intelligence chiefs.

Mazlum-Der has also asked that the Israeli officials be detained if they enter Turkey, prosecutors said.

Turkish prosecutors are required to open an investigation whenever an official complaint is filed.

UNRWA suspends Gaza aid after Hamas steals supplies

UNRWA informed the IDF on Friday that it is suspending its humanitarian aid deliveries to the Gaza Strip after Hamas stole supplies the United Nations organization had transferred to the Palestinian territory.

The seizure of the 200 tons of supplies took place Thursday night and in response, UNRWA officials informed the Gaza Coordination and Liaison Administration that it was suspending its deliveries to the Gaza Strip until further notice. The supplies confiscated included flour and other basic commodities.

The transfer of 40 truckloads of humanitarian supplies – some 800 tons – planned for Sunday has already been canceled.

Officials in Jerusalem said the announcement by UNRWA constituted a UN approval and confirmation of Israel’s position, that Hamas is using the Palestinian population in gaza “cruelly and cynically” and is solely responsible for hardship there.

Welfare and Social Services Minister Isaac Herzog, who was appointed by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert at the end of Operation Cast Lead to coordinate Israel’s humanitarian effort in Gaza, told Israel Radio that theft of humanitarian aid exposes the true face of Hamas and of its supporters in Iran.

It was the second time this week that Hamas stole UN supplies transferred to the Gaza Strip for impoverished Palestinians.

The first incident took place Tuesday evening when armed Hamas police broke into a Gaza warehouse packed with UN humanitarian supplies and seized thousands of blankets and food packages.

The seizure took place after UNRWA staff earlier refused to hand over the aid supplies to the Hamas-run Ministry of Social Affairs.

“We received a phone call this morning from UNRWA officials that they have decided to suspend their deliveries after Hamas stole supplies from one of the organization’s warehouses in the Gaza Strip,” explained a senior official.

The official said that the IDF noticed the trend already during Operation Cast Lead last month, when despite the fighting, Israel transferred close to 80 trucks a day to the Strip.

Nuaf Atar, a Fatah operative captured during the operation, told the Shin Bet (Israel Security Agency) that Hamas government officials “took over” humanitarian aid Israel allowed in to the Gaza Strip and sold it when it was supposed to be distributed for free.

UNRWA Spokesman Sami Mshasha confirmed that the organization had suspended its deliveries to Gaza after Hamas stole its supplies.

“This is the second incident this week and this is a point of great concern for us and sets a bad precedent and if we are to provide services to people in Gaza after such an ordeal we need assurances that our work will be unimpeded,” Mshasha said. “We cannot subjugate our work to the Ministry of Social Affairs in Gaza.”

Barak: More Iranian ships bound for Gaza

Although defense minister Ehud Barak did not confirm that the Iranian ships on their way to the Gaza Strip carry arms for Hamas – in a radio interview Thursday, Feb. 5, DEBKAfile’s military sources report

that Tehran is preparing to send a number of arms vessels to break the blockade on Gaza, encouraged by the failure of the US, Egyptian and Israeli navies to confiscate the arms aboard the Cypriot-flagged arms ships now docked at Limassol.

The Iranians calculate that while not all the ships may get through the Israeli naval blockade, one would suffice. Our sources report that some are already on the way. They are expected to enter the Gulf of Suez and waters opposite Gaza over the weekend and try to drop their cargoes of weapons containers off shore. Israeli warships and spy planes are tracking them.

At a special conference Thursday, Feb. 5, prime minister Olmert, foreign minister Tzipi Livni and the defense minister agreed to Iranian arms ships must be prevented from unloading its cargo, even at the cost of a marine clash with Iran.

Barak also disclosed that the Cypriot authorities are unloading the Iranian arms ship Monchegorsk renamed Iran Hedayt in Limassol harbor having discovered it is in contravention of the UN Security Council sanctions resolution 1747 which bans Iranian arms exports.

DEBKA file’s military sources disclosed it was carrying 10 containers of Iranian rockets and other weapons for rearming Hamas in the Gaza Strip in violation of Israel’s terms for accepting a Gaza ceasefire last month. Cyprus reported to the UN Security Council Sanctions Committee on its findings in two inspections of the vessel but has not published them.

At stake now is the entire international effort to stop the Palestinian Islamists rearming – to which the US, Egypt and European nations are party.

Israel: Gaza aid must not enrich Hamas

Israel is not opposed to foreign aid to reconstruct Gaza’s infrastructure, but is worried the funds and supplies could easily reach the hands of Hamas, a Foreign Ministry spokesman told The Jerusalem Post on Thursday.

“If the international community believes it can bring about a real reconstruction of Gaza, it has our blessing, but we don’t want the resources it will pour into Gaza to end up rebuilding the infrastructure of violence, the weapons and war machines [of Hamas],” said the ministry’s deputy spokesman Andy David.

ith British Prime Minister Gordon Brown in London on Thursday, called for the international community to continue the flow of aid into Gaza regardless of concerns over whether Hamas would pilfer it for its own purposes.

“There are many saying that this aid is being stolen,” Abbas said. “In spite of that, what we are saying is that the world must, must keep sending humanitarian aid.

Now, as far as reconstruction is concerned, reconstruction must start today – yes, today – through the international organizations and agencies.”

Abbas added Gaza’s reconstruction required some $15 billion in foreign assistance.

Brown pledged Britain would help the reconstruction efforts, and called on Israel to allow aid to reach the victims of the conflict, BBC reported.

“We are only now seeing the full extent of the problems we face,” he said. “We must do everything we can to help rebuild Gaza and to provide humanitarian aid to families whose lives have been shattered.”

Brown added that he had written Prime Minister Ehud Olmert this week urging him to allow full humanitarian access to those seeking to get food and medicines to those who need it.

But Israeli officials remain wary of the international organizations’ ability to keep the aid out of the hands of Hamas.

Just one day before the London meeting, United Nations Relief and Works Agency officials blasted Hamas for sending armed forces into a UN warehouse in Gaza to seize some 3,500 blankets and 400 food parcels funded by international donors.

The seizure took place after UNRWA staff refused to hand over the aid supplies to the Hamas-run Social Affairs Ministry, according to UNRWA spokesman Christopher Gunness. Similar aid packages were distributed to 70,000 residents over the past two weeks, Gunness said.

The incident called into question the ability of the international community to control where its assistance goes, said Israeli officials.

While certain international agencies, especially UNRWA and the Red Cross, “are capable of properly overseeing the distribution of the aid – which in any case won’t arrive in cash form – there is still a problem as long as Hamas is sovereign in Gaza,” said David.

“Nobody trusts Hamas, not us and not the international community.

We all know that Hamas uses its resources for developing military capabilities and not civilian infrastructure.

The same supplies can build greenhouses or Kassam [rocket] tubes,” he added.

The difficulty faced by the donors could be resolved if Gaza residents took the matter into their hands en masse, said David.

“The residents of Gaza can’t avoid some responsibility for this.

They are not helpless children. They have to make their voices heard. If the Palestinians want reconstruction, they have to demand that Hamas stop digging tunnels under their homes, and stop buying Katyushas, Kassams or explosives instead of provisions,” he said.

Also Thursday, Olmert approved the transfer of NIS 175m. to Gaza banks from PA coffers in the West Bank. The funds are intended to pay January salaries for PA workers in Gaza.

While the move has been criticized by Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak on the grounds that it could end up enriching Hamas, Olmert has defended the move

on legal grounds, saying the funds are PA monies that cannot be blocked by Israel. Such transfers are made monthly, with December’s receiving the approval of Barak himself, according to the Prime Minister’s Office.

“Just to clarify, this is a technical transfer of currency in accordance with international agreements to which Israel is a party,” a spokesman for the PMO told the Post on Thursday. “This money belongs to the PA, not Israel.”

The PA continues to pay salaries to its former workers in the Gaza Strip to keep them from joining the Hamas government or security forces.
