Obama backs Israel unity government headed by Netanyahu

US president Barack Obama has bought Likud leader Binyamin Netanyahu’s program for attacking the Palestinian issue by first building a strong West Bank economy, DEBKAfile’s Washington sources report. For its execution, Washington is in favor of Netanyahu forming a unity government in partnership with Kadima’s Tzipi Livni and Labor’s Ehud Barak.

Messages to this effect reached the three Israeli leaders over the weekend. It was picked up on by the outgoing prime minister Ehud Olmert, who invited Netanyahu to join his next consultation with Livni and Barak on handling the Hamas truce talks in Cairo.

Making it a foursome effectively starts the transition between the Jerusalem administrations.

Our sources also reveal that the White House decided after due deliberation to put the Palestinian peace issue on a back burner in the first year of the Obama presidency. Its top priorities must now be the economy and Afghanistan-Pakistan. The president’s national security adviser Gen. James Jones argued that anyway, the Palestinians are split between two rival administrations and the potential Palestinian state is fragmented between the Gaza enclave backed by Iran and the and the West Bank which is headed by a weak leader, Mahmoud Abbas. The basic conditions for peace diplomacy are therefore lacking.

Special Middle East envoy George Mitchell was therefore instructed to focus on plans for establishing a firm economy on the West Bank with several hundred million dollars of US aid. Taking the opposite direction from previous Israeli governments, the Likud leader persuaded Washington that giving West Bank Palestinians a sense of prosperity would produce more results than going straight for the tough issues such as settlement evacuation. With a robust economy, the Palestinians have a better chance of building healthy government.

Mitchell was also directed to expedite the creation and training of a Palestinian security force to sustain a pro-Western administration on the West Bank.

With these two elements in place, the Obama administration hopes the future will throw up a Palestinian leader able to take over from Mahmoud Abbas and lead negotiations with Israel for a peace serving both their interests

Duped again by a Hamas promise to negotiate a long-term truce, Israel reacted by stepping up its air attacks over the Gaza Strip from Friday, Feb. 13, to hold down a fresh upsurge of Palestinian violence.

After spreading false reports that an 18-month truce and a deal

for the release of the captive Israeli soldier Gilead Shalit were “hours away”, Hamas jerked the carpet from under the Cairo talks in spite of Israel’s over-generous concessions.

Last week, Israel was persuaded by the Egyptian intelligence minister Gen.

Omar Suleiman to let Hamas leader Mahmud A-Zahar travel from Gaza to Cairo, Damascus and Qatar on the underst

anding that he would override hardline Khaled Meshaal and sign an extended truce deal.

Instead of signing, Hamas used the time gained to restock its arsenal after the beating it took from Israel’s Gaza operation last month and regroup for a fresh cross-border offensive.

Early, Saturday, Feb. 14, the Israeli Air Force bombed two foundries turning out missiles near Jebalya outside Gaza City, injuring 6 Palestinians, after a week of spasmodic launchings.

Earlier, six tunnels running under the Philadelphi border corridor were destroyed in the middle of smuggling fresh supplies of arms, and a duo was struck on a motorbike near Khan Younis on its way to a terrorist attack in Israel. One was killed, two others injured. They claimed membership of the al Qaeda wing of the Popular Resistance Committees.

Jerusalem reacted in this way after agreeing to Cairo’s request last week to hold its hand against a slow spate of Hamas missiles. The request came from Gen. Suleiman, Egypt’s senior negotiator with Hamas, through the defense ministry official, Amos Gilead.

Defense minister Ehud Barak accordingly ordered Israeli air bombardments to be confined harmlessly to abandoned buildings and sand dunes in the hope of convincing Hamas of Israel’s good will.

Israel also acceded to Suleiman request to temper its demand for Hamas to observe a 500-meter cordon sanitaire behind the Gaza-Israeli border, reducing the depth of this sterile belt to 300 m.

Israel also agreed to a 70 percent reopening of the border

crossings.

Hamas played for time by raising new demands the while conspiring with al Qaeda’s cell in Gaza to mount a large-scale terrorist attack near Kissufim on the Israeli side of the border. Hamas supplied the explosives and intelligence but planned to deny responsibility so that Israel would have no justification for ditching the phony, indirect negotiating track in Cairo.

The plot was discovered Friday, Feb. 13, and Barak finally ordered the Israeli Air Force to go into action. Now that its machinations are exposed, Hamas is fully expected to revive its missile and rockets attacks on Israel full blast together with sabotage incidents along the border fence.

With rumors swirling that Israel and Hamas were just hours away from a cease-fire deal, the Prime Minister’s Office issued a statement Saturday pouring cold water on the reports, and making it clear for the first time that Israel will not accept a truce that does not include the return of St.-Sgt. Gilad Schalit.

“It should be emphasized that what is on top of Israel’s priorities are the security of the residents of the South and the release of Gilad Schalit,” the statement said.

“Israel will invest all its efforts to further these two goals.

“The prime minister’s position is that Israel will not reach an agreement on a calm before the release of Gilad Schalit.”

Government sources said this was the first time Schalit’s freedom had been mentioned so unequivocally as a condition of a truce agreement, and pointed out that in the six-month cease-fire agreement reached last June the only reference to Schalit was that negotiations for his release would be stepped up.

The sources offered no explanation as to what brought about this change of policy, or whether it was connected to the results of last Tuesday’s election.

In light of reports based on foreign sources that Jerusalem was about to sign an agreement with Hamas, the Prime Minister’s Office wanted to clarify that Israel “was not conducting negotiations with Hamas and would certainly not reach understandings with it,” as the statement said.

Israel has stressed that its negotiations, led by Amos Gilad, the head of the Defense Ministry’s Diplomatic-Security Bureau, are being held with the Egyptians, not with Hamas.

According to the statement, government consultations will be held on Sunday regarding the situation in the South.

“In any event, if any decision is needed it will be made only after convening the security cabinet, and taking into consideration the new political circumstances that have been created as a result of the election.”

Defense officials, meanwhile, said a decision on a new cease-fire might be put off until a new government was formed, something that could take weeks.

Hamas leaders and spokesmen, meanwhile, issued conflicting statements over the weekend regarding the prospects for a cease-fire.

Some expressed optimism, saying the Egyptian mediators had managed to bridge the gap between Hamas and Israel. Others, however, said it was premature to talk about a breakthrough because of Israel’s refusal to reopen the border crossings and lift the blockade on Gaza.

Ismail Radwan, a top Hamas representative in the Strip, said on Saturday evening that, barring last-minute surprises, a cease-fire agreement was expected “within the next few hours.”

Radwan said that Hamas negotiators who were currently in Cairo had reached a series of understandings with the Egyptians over the terms of a cease-fire.

“The Egyptians have accepted the understandings and Hamas will not change its position,” he said. “We continue to insist that any cease-fire agreement include the reopening of all the border crossings, including the Rafah crossing.”

Radwan refused to specify the nature of the understandings that were reached with the Egyptians and whether they referred to Schalit.

But Fawzi Barhoum, a Hamas spokesman in the Gaza Strip, said the talks were facing difficulties because of Israeli “intransigence.”

He said that Hamas was told by the Egyptians that Israel had changed its position and was now demanding an open-ended truce and not one limited to 18 months.

“The cease-fire agreement has been concluded and we are waiting for the Egyptian government to announce it,” Barhoum said. “But we have learned that the Israelis are placing new obstacles. Hamas will not agree to an open-ended truce.”

Salah Bardaweel, a Hamas legislator who participated in the Egyptian-sponsored talks, said the agreement called for an 18-month truce that would go into effect on Sunday morning.

The accord also called to lift the blockade and reopen all the border crossings, he said.

Bardaweel said Egypt had promised to reopen the Rafah border crossing under the terms of a new agreement that would replace the one that was reached under the auspices of the US in 2005.

He said the new agreement would allow Hamas to join forces with the Palestinian Authority in managing the terminal. He said it also called for stationing European monitors at the border.

However, unlike in the 2005 agreement, the monitors would be required to live in the northern Sinai town of el-Arish, and not in Israel.

Meanwhile, five Gazan rockets pounded the South over the weekend, including a Grad-model Katyusha that traveled 40 kilometers and hit Gan Yavne.

In response, the air force bombed eight Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.

On Saturday afternoon, a bomb went off next to an IDF vehicle that was patrolling the Gaza border. No one was injured, and soldiers searched the area for gunmen and additional explosive devices.

The Grad that hit Yavne was the first long-range rocket fired into Israel since Operation Cast Lead ended last month. IDF early-warning systems did not detect the fire, military sources said.

Over the weekend, the air force targeted weapons manufacturing facilities in the Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza as well as smuggling tunnels under the Philadelphi Corridor.

Palestinians reported six people wounded in the strikes.

On Friday, the IAF hit a vehicle in the southern town of Khan Yunis, killing two men, who the IDF said were global jihad operatives and were in the midst of planning an attack against Israel.

On Friday, a 14-year-old Arab boy was reportedly shot and killed by IDF troops during rioting near Hebron’s Cave of the Patriarchs, Palestinian medical sources said.

The army said it shot one of the instigators of the riot, which included rock throwing and use of Molotov cocktails.

ISTANBUL, Turkey (CNN) — The once-untouchable Turkish military again took to defending itself on its Web site, announcing Thursday that “the Turkish military has no connections with illegal organizations or criminals.”

The statement was released after a former police chief accused Turkey’s top army general of ordering him to create a secret counter-terrorism force charged with “cleaning out the interior of Turkey.”

Ibrahim Sahin, a former officer in charge of police special operations, testified in an Istanbul court this week is one of scores of suspects accused of membership in a shadowy organization that plotted to overthrow the Turkish government. He made the charges against the Turkish military while testifying to a state prosecutor.

Among those arrested are businessmen, politicians, journalists and army officers. News reports have linked the group — known as “Ergenekon” — to a series of unsolved assassinations over the past 15 years.

The Ergenekon investigation has been under way since 2007. In prosecutors’ first voluminous indictment, they charged suspects with plotting to attack a NATO base in Turkey, as one of a series of “bloody attacks aiming at creating serious crisis, chaos, anarchy, terrorism and instability.”

‘Plotters’ seized as tension mounts in Turkey

Critics say the investigation is a political witch hunt. They accuse Turkey’s observant Muslim prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, of targeting staunch secularists.

Prosecutors are preparing a second indictment that is expected to charge several army generals who were arrested last year with membership in Ergenekon.

Essay: Genocide by any international standard

“The persecution of Armenians is assuming unprecedented proportions. Reports from widely scattered districts indicate a systematic attempt to uproot peaceful populations and through arbitrary efforts, terrible tortures, wholesale expulsions and deportations from one end of the Empire to the other, accompanied by frequent instances of rape, pillage and murder turning into massacre, to bring destruction and destitution on them.” – Henry Morgenthau Sr., US ambassador to the Ottoman Empire, July 10, 1915

But did this constitute genocide

? Not according to Israel which, for reasons of “practical realpolitik” regarding relations with Turkey has long refused to recognize the 1915-1923 massacre of up to 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks as an act of ethnic extermination.

Nor according to the United States, which bases its refusal on similar grounds.

And not without cause.

Most recently, Turkey responded to an October 2007 draft congressional resolution calling on president George Bush to characterize the killings as genocide by threatening to cut its logistical support for US operations in Iraq and close its strategic Incirlik air base to American aircraft. Turkey spent $300,000 a month on Washington lobbyists to ensure its message hit home. The resolution, which had already passed the committee stage and had 225 cosponsors in the House of Representatives, was quickly withdrawn.

Ankara’s indefatigable efforts to prevent international recognition of the Armenian genocide derive from the fact that its denial is part of Turkey’s founding mythology, a plank of official policy since the 1922 Lausanne Conference, where claims of mass killings were dismissed as “Christian propaganda.” In 1934, it successfully lobbied Washington to persuade MGM to drop plans to film The Forty Days of Musa Dagh, Franz Werfel’s best-selling novel about the Armenian experience, by threatening to boycott American films.

This campaign of denial intensified after 1965 when Armenian commemorations of the 50th anniversary brought the issue to international attention. By the mid-1970s, Turkey was engaged in what Richard Falk described as “a major, proactive, deliberate effort to… keep the truth about the Armenian genocide from general acknowledgment.” By the 1990s, this included the endowment of chairs in Turkish studies at several US universities with the aim of disseminating Ankara’s version of events.

ACCORDING TO THIS VERSION, Armenians have willfully painted an inaccurate picture of what happened in the World War I period and why. And there is certainly truth in Turkey’s claim that the situation w as not

as clear-cut as generally presented. Rarely acknowledged, for instance, is that the rise of Armenian nationalism in the 19th century led to enormous tensions between Armenians and their Ottoman overlords, and that many had sided against the empire in the 1828, 1854 and 1877 wars.

It is also infrequently admitted that although 250,000 Armenians were conscripted into the Ottoman armies during World War I, another 150,000, out of a sense of religious affinity with the Orthodox Slavs and in the hope that a Russian victory would lead to an independent Armenian state, volunteered to serve under the czar, while a further 50,000 joined Armenian guerrilla groups which openly sided with him. Seldom spoken of either is the fact that hundreds of thousands of Muslim, Greek and Jewish civilians died directly at their hands.

But while Constantinople may have gained grounds for viewing the Armenians as a fifth column, nonpartisan sources make clear that their deportation and murder began before any attempted insurrection.

As David Fromkin, who studied German sources, has written: “There are historians today who continue to support the claim… that the Ottoman rulers acted only after Armenia had risen against them. But observers at the time who were by no means anti-Turk reported that such was not the case. German officers stationed there agreed that the area was quiet until the deportations began.”

Ankara also denies that 1.5 million Armenians actually died. While some Turkish historians allow that up to 600,000 were killed, the semi-official Turkish Historical Society puts the figure closer to 300,000 and argues that, of these, only 10,000 were massacred, the remainder dying of starvation and disease.

It further claims that these 10,000 were killed, not as part of a genocidal plan, but in the heat of battle and more often than not by Kurds.

But it is a matter of historical record that the Special Organization, an official arm of the Defense Ministry, oversaw the activities of Einsatzgruppen-style killing squads that, in the words of one US diplomat, “swept the countryside, massacring [Armenian] men, women and children.” And while Kurds were certainly involved in the killing, they were deliberately coopted for the task by the Turkish War Ministry in the knowledge that, as the Armenians’ historic blood enemies, they would lose no opportunity to avenge ancient grudges.

Ankara’s distinction between those directly murdered and those who died indirectly from starvation, disease and exposure is also highly questionable. With no provision made for clothing, food or shelter, the anticipated outcome of the deportations into the Syrian desert was obviously death. In fact, the Turkish interior minister termed them “marches to eternity” and his meaning was clear to his appalled German allies who distanced themselves from the policy. To say that the Armenians who died during the deportations were not deliberately killed is like claiming there were no intentional Jewish deaths during their “relocation” to the East or on the death marches to the West during World War II.

THE FACT IS that the Armenian massacres constituted genocide by any international standard, conforming to the UN’s criterion of having been “committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial or religious group.” Indeed, Raphael Lemkin, who coined the term ‘genocide’ in 1944, used the Armenian massacres as an illustrative example.

Today Turkey’s campaign to prevent its recognition is assuming a Canute-like quality. Some 21 countries have already formally acknowledged it, including Russia, Canada and France, as has the European Parliament, the World Council of Churches and the International Association of Genocide Scholars. And with President Barack Obama (who twice pledged to recognize the genocide during his election campaign), Joe Biden, Hilary Clinton, CIA chief Leon Panetta and the NSC’s director of multilateral affairs Samantha Power also on board, we now have what the Turkish daily Hurriyet described as the “most pro-Armenian [administration] in history,” and the Armenian National Committee of America is currently preparing to place another “recognition resolution” before Congress. In fact, Obama may well use this year’s April 24 White House statement commemorating the killings to recognize them as genocide.

Furthermore, an official with a leading American Jewish organization recently told The Jerusalem Post that the post-Cast Lead “deterioration in Israel-Turkey relations might prompt his group and others to reconsider” their traditional support for Ankara’s stance. And Israel, which Yair Auron, author of The Banality of Denial: Israel and the Armenian Genocide, describes as Turkey’s “principal partner” in denial, has itself made similar noises, with Deputy Foreign Minister Majallie Whbee warning that if Turkey persists in its claims that genocide is taking place in Gaza, “we will then recognize the Armenian-related events as genocide.”

Albeit for the wrong reasons, this is surely the right thing to do. For, while fears regarding repercussions for both bilateral relations and Turkey’s 25,000-strong Jewish community are unfortunately well-founded, Israel, perhaps more than other nations, has a moral obligation to call this crime by its name.

Turkey irked by IDF general’s remarks

In what appears to some in Jerusalem as an attempt to create friction between the Israeli and Turkish military establishments, the Turkish Foreign Ministry called in Israeli envoy Gabi Levy Saturday to protest reports that an IDF general sharply criticized Turkey’s prime minister for his harsh condemnation of Israel during Operation Cast Lead.

“We confirm that the Turks protested to the ambassador. He [Levy] wrote it down and will pass it on to Jerusalem,” Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Saturday evening.

OC Ground Forces Command Maj.-Gen. Avi Mizrahi was paraphrased in an Haaretz feature Friday as saying during a lecture at the Tactical Command College on Tuesday that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has been vicious in his criticism of Israel since Operation Cast Lead, should first look in the mirror.

The report said that Mizrahi, not a household name in Israel, “did not leave it at a clear allusion to the massacre of the Armenians and the suppression of the Kurds, but mentioned the Turkish occupation of northern Cyprus as well.”

The Turks asked Levy whether the comments were true, and for an explanation.

The IDF Spokesman’s Office issued a statement saying, “In his lecture, Maj.-Gen. Mizrahi referred to the moral level of IDF commanders and soldiers during Operation Cast Lead.

“When referring to the criticism Turkey leveled at Israel, the general said that the statements [made by Turkey] could also be interpreted as criticism of Turkey. The IDF Spokesman wishes to clarify that this does not reflect the official IDF position.”

Despite Erdogan’s extremely harsh comments during the Gaza operation – among them that Israel should be barred from the UN, that Israel was perpetrating inhumane actions that would lead to its destruction, and his upbraiding of President Shimon Peres at the Davos summit last month – Israel has never called in the Turkish ambassador to register a protest.

While Erdogan has gravely taken Israel to task, the Turkish military has stayed above the fray.

According to one school of thought in Jerusalem, however, making a major diplomatic issue over a paraphrased quote of an IDF general in the newspaper is an attempt to cause friction between the two military establishments.

reported that the Turkish General Staff, in a statement carried by the state-run Anatolian news agency, said Mizrahi’s remarks were untrue and completely unacceptable.

“The comments have been assessed to be at the extent that the national interests between the two countries could be damaged,” it said.

Military ties between the two countries are important to both, with Israel one of Turkey’s key arms suppliers, and Turkey letting Israel use Turkish airspace for training exercises.

Turkey is extremely sensitive about three issues: the Armenian issue, the Kurds and Cyprus, and the feeling in Ankara is that Mizrahi managed to step on each of those blisters at one go.

The Turks also differentiate between what politicians, like Erdogan, say and what military men, like Mizrahi, say. The feeling in Ankara is that were the same comments made by Olmert or any other politician, they would not have elicited as strong a reaction as when uttered by a general.

Meanwhile, Erdogan continued his verbal sparring with Israel on Saturday, saying in an interview with Reuters and two Turkish newspapers that the Israeli elections left him “a bit sad.”

“Unfortunately we have seen that the [Israeli] people have voted for these [rightist] parties and that makes me a bit sad,” he said.”Unfortunately the election has painted a very dark picture.”

Erdogan, who has repeatedly condemned the Israeli blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip due to the continual rocket attacks against the western Negev, again called on Jerusalem to change its policy.

“With the cease-fire the embargo should be lifted,” he told Reuters.

“The Palestinian people should be freed from an open-air prison they are living in right now, this is against human rights.”

In a related development, sources in the Prime Minister’s Office downplayed media reports that Erdogan felt “betrayed” by Olmert because on the Israeli prime minister’s trip to Turkey in late December, just days before the beginning of Operation Cast Lead, Erdogan had called Syrian Prime Minister Bashar Assad, while Olmert was in his residence, and over a four-hour period tried to reach an agreement on beginning direct talks.

According to these reports, Olmert was being briefed in real time on the content of the discussions.

According to the report, Erdogan felt betrayed because while he was still awaiting Olmert’s final response to his efforts, Israel embarked on its Gaza operation.

“When Olmert was in Turkey before the war started, there was a feeling we were very, very close to direct talks with the Syrians, but it didn’t come together,” sources in the Prime Minister’s Office said Saturday night.

I am not a gloomy person. For those of you who personally know me,

At the moment it appears the most likely makeup of the new government may be the three parties of Katima, Likud, and Labor, which would give the government a total of 68 votes out of a total of 120. The Prime Minister would most likely be Benjamin Netanyahu of the Likud Party. While the make-up of

the next government remains a question mark in Israel, it appears that the United States and the European Union have already weighed in with a clear preference for a unity government that includes Kadima and Likud.

The U.S. official position is that it looks forward to “working with any government,” but in back-channel messages the Obama administration has made it clear it would like to see a unity government in Jerusalem over a narrow right-wing government which would in all likelihood result in a freeze in peace talks with the Palestinians.

Aides to Likud chairman Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Friday that Washington officials did indeed relay the message while associates of Kadima chief Tzipi Livni denied receiving such a message.

Officially, the State Department said the coalitional line-up is an internal Israeli matter with which Washington does not involve itself.

The European Union’s foreign policy chief says a new unity government of Israel’ s Kadima and Likud political partie

s would help Mideast peace talks.

EU official Javier Solana says an Israeli government led by Netanyahu would be more difficult for the peace process.

In the most likely scenario for a unity government, Netanyahu would be prime minister while Kadima would hold ministries such as finance, defense or foreign affairs.

Solana also said Friday in Washington that there could be a deal within 48 hours between Israel and Hamas on a long-term cease-fire in Gaza.

Egypt is mediating the talks.

The exiled leader of Hamas, Khaled Meshaal, told AFP on Friday that there was a hitch in Egyptian mediators’ plans to announce a truce with Israel in and around the territory this weekend.

“The Egyptians had told us that the announcement of this truce would be made on Sunday but there has been a complication and we don’t know if that date will be kept to,” Meshaal told AFP without specifying the nature of the problem.

The Damascus-based Hamas leader, who had just arrived in the Qatari capital after a mini-tour of regional states deemed sympathetic to his organization, said that the Egyptian mediators were discussing the problem but that he did not believe that the original timetable would be adhered to.

Mashaal’s number two Moussa Abu Marzouk had told the Egyptian state news agency MENA late on Thursday that the mediators would announce an agreement on an 18-month truce within 48 hours after Hamas gave it its endorsement.

Abu Marzouk also said kidnapped soldier Gilad Shalit would not be included in the agreement. “This is a separate issue and has no bearing on the ceasefire,” he said.

A Palestinian source added that any correlation between a possible prisoner swap and the emerging ceasefire would have “complicated” the talks.

Arab press agencies have reported that Israel was willing to release most of the Palestinian prisoners Hamas is demanding in return for Shalit.

Four names still constitute points of contention, among them the mastermind behind the assassination of Minister Rehavam Zeevi, Ahmad Sa’adat.

On Saturday Reuters reported that the Egypt-brokered ceasefire would encompass 18 months. The second stage of talks would include a possible prisoner swap deal.

Assad’s Speech on ‘Terrorist Zionist Entity’ To Become Part of Syrian School Curriculum

At the Second Islamic Conference of Ministers in Charge of Childhood, held February 3, 2009 in Khartoum,

Syrian Education Minister Dr. ‘Ali Sa’d announced that the concept of the” terrorist Zionist entity,” presented by Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad in his speech at the January 16, 2009 Doha summit, would be incorporated into the Syrian school curriculum. In that speech, Assad accused Israel of perpetrating another Nazi holocaust in Gaza, claiming that the spilling of Arab blood since the establishment of Israel was intended to bring about a purely Jewish state.

Assad also called to instill in the future Arab generations the principle “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth,” to ensure that they would never forget or forgive Israel’s actions.

Following are excerpts from statements by Syrian Education Minister Dr. ‘Ali Sa’d and by other Syrian and Arab officials, as well as excerpts from Assad’s speech at the Doha summit.

Syrian Education Minister: Assad’s Message Must Be Transmitted to Future Generations

At the conference, which was attended by representatives of 36 Arab and Islamic countries, Syrian Education Minister Dr.

‘Ali Sa’d said: “The Syrian Education Ministry regards the strategic concepts and ideas presented by President Bashar Al-Assad at the emergency summit on Gaza as [an outline for a] work plan.”

He added that at a meeting held by the ministry, attended by all elements in charge of developing the Syrian curriculum and textbooks, it had been decided to incorporate these concepts and ideas into the new curriculum and books, in order to inculcate them in “the generations that would build the nation’s future,” and thereby teach them that “the Zionist entity is a terrorist entity.”

Sa’d stressed that if the expressions “We will not forget and not forgive” and “terrorist entity” (as a label for Israel)

appeared in Syrian textbooks, it would “create awareness about [the nature of] this entity, and constitute immeasurable support for resistance in the [battle]field.” Sa’d also stated that President Assad and his wife had a personal interest in education and concern for this issue, and that they intended to “equip the nation’s [future] generations with the knowledge, ideology, values, and abilities [necessary] to meet the needs of the [country’s] renewed development.”(1)

It should be noted that the Khartoum conference adopted the Syrian delegation’s recommendation to term Israel a “terrorist entity” in textbooks and in the media.(2)

At a reception for the delegations attending the Arab Youth Conference, held February 3-6, 2009 in Syria, Ba’th Party National Deputy Secretary Muhammad Sa’id Bkheitan announced that Syria “saw the Arab youth as the nation’s hope for strengthening the endeavor of construction, progress, and support for the enterprise of resistance to occupation and aggression.”

Several delegation heads likewise expressed their appreciation for “the role played by Syria in strengthening the culture of resistance and steadfastness,” and the conference proposed “to inculcate the culture of resistance as a culture of an Arab generation that believes in the power of life, aspires to freedom, and opposes the culture of defeatism.”(3)

Assad: “Israel – The Most Dangerous [Brand of] Nazism in the Modern Era”

In his speech at the January 16, 2009 Doha summit on Gaza, Assad declared: “The starting point of our decisions today will be our support for the people of Gaza in the face of the new Nazi holocaust [perpetrated by] Israel… [However, our understanding] will not be complete unless we realize that the problem lies not only in the occupation per se, but in the nature of the enemy we are facing…

“This enemy has established itself through slaughter, sustained itself through plunder and destruction, and anchored its future in genocide. This is an enemy who speaks only the language of blood, and hence understands only the language of blood. The spilling of Arab blood since Israel’s establishment is regarded by Israel’s leaders as the fuel needed to [power] the machine [designed] to create a purely Jewish state. [This state] will become possible only after the non-Jews are expelled from Palestine and those remaining are exterminated.

“It follows that the [current] Gaza events are not merely a response to [Hamas’] missiles – [because] had missiles not existed, the [Israelis] would have invented them and fired them [themselves] as an excuse [for their aggression]. Rather, [the Gaza offensive] is a link in the long chain [of actions] aimed at creating the Palestine of their dreams, which they presume to portray as a country without a people…

“There must be legal measures so that Israel stands trial – despite our lack of faith in the relevant international institutions – so that it will be written in the annals of history that [the Israelis] are not only racists but [represent] the most dangerous brand of Nazism in the modern era…

“Oh brothers, we are a nation of peace, and our national, Arab, and human moral values are anchored in peace. Likewise, we have tried to forget the massacres of Deir Yassin, Kafr Qassem, Jenin, Qana – both the first and the second – and many others perpetrated by Israel against the Arabs. But Israel insists on reminding us of the truth about itself.

We have a very good memory… [and] we promise them that

we will continue to remember.

“But, more importantly, we will ensure that our sons remember too. We will preserve for them the pictures of the Gaza children, with their open wounds oozing blood on their toys.

We will tell them about the martyrs, the bereaved [families], the widows, and

the cripples. We will teach them that ‘Allah favors and loves the strong believer over the weak one,’ [and to uphold these principles:] ‘an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth’; ‘he who started the fight is guilty’; and what was taken by force will only be reclaimed by force.

“We will explain to them that those who do not remember the past forfeit the future as well. On the walls of their rooms, we will hang posters exhorting every Arab child who is born into this world ‘Do Not Forget’ – so that when he grows up, he will say to them, ‘No, I will neither forget nor forgive’…”(4)

“For Every Arab Child Killed, Dozens of Resistance Fighters Are Born”

“I stress [to the Israelis] that the war crimes they are committing will bring them nothing but generations of Arabs imbued with [even] deeper hatred for Israel. The [Arabs’] strength and determination will grow faster than [Israel’s] arsenal, and the power [of their determination] will be more lethal.

This means that for every Arab child killed, dozens of resistance fighters are born – thus, [the Israelis] are digging the graves of their children and grandchildren with their own hands.

“Today, they have an opportunity to plant the seeds of the future they want – for better or for worse.

Later, they will no longer be able to determine what harvest [they will reap]. They have sowed blood and will reap nothing but [blood]. And when the seedling grows, it will be much bigger than the seed from which it sprang.”(5)
